    It was cool to see your Fisher wood stove at the end of the video. Fisher was my first wood stove, purchased in 1976 (or so), and of all the wood stoves I have owned/used since then, it was the one that I recall with the fondest memories. Simple, reliable, and well built. I have heated my home exclusively with wood for the last 18 years. I wish you all the best on your journey back to the land!

    "Kids today, no ambition, no sense of hard work, don't even go outside much, just sit with their smart phones and play games!" LOL, thanks for providing another counterexample. I believe you're on the right track for life. My life choices were quite a bit different from yours, but I did avoid unnecessary debt, did a lot of my own work, and now I'm in my 50s, retired (wife also retired), no debt at all, living the good life. It's good to see others setting themselves up for true success, going about it differently but with a clear path.

      I really hate that argument, like this is self sufficient but its not really helpful to society as a whole, hell if everyone was doing this sort of thing society would fall back to nomadic tribes quickly. Not everyone can be the outdoors style self sufficient group, some have to be specialized to do tasks required for a modern society.

    Solongos Camp in Korea has been producing Gerhouse, a K-Yurt since 2002.
    If you use our construction method, you don't have to spend a lot of money and time to build a yurt and make a wooden deck in the air, just like in the US.
    build a formwork on the first day of construction, pour concrete, and start lattice wall, right from the next morning can be built.
    In addition, our method transmits the earth's geothermal heat to the yurt by pouring concrete on the foundation and floor of the yurt, so it is superior in insulation compared to the American method of making a yurt flatform and floating it in the air.
    Because the yurt platform, the most basic part, is firmly bound to the ground with concrete, it is strong against earthquakes and typhoons without having to install a separate safety device.
    In addition, our method does not use only one or two layers of insulation to cover the yurt, as in the US, but we use about 20 layers of the insulation is so excellent that you do not feel very hot or cold in midwinter or midsummer.

    Great Video! I like your style. I went through a similar exercise on my own off grid land this last year building a shed. Hoping to get an ATV this year, though most of the time I can get my car within 100yards of my shed. Granted, where I want to build my cabin is way up the hill with a very primitive 2 track road crossing quite a few seasonal creeks to get up there.

    Hi Guys, my compliments, it's very nice and right decision! i'm planning to do the same in 5-6 years (i think it require a bit of preparation and money saving). I start following you and i've 4 curiosity, if u have time and u should be so gentle. 1) I'm curious to know, i'm Italian, where's "great Lakes" i think u mean US, but i dunno where this place is... 2) how much you spent for 14 acres, i'm searching in databases but free place (to buy from state) are 4-5 acres (and they are too small for build and gardening). 3) how's the rules there about constructions, there's a Building limits? (in sq feets) or it's free size? 4) can you build a hole for the water gathering, or a sealed trough to collect rainwater for irrigation?
    thanks a lot, i will follow you, nice to meet you and my best, 4u,

      @sam_zach  Год назад +1

      Hi Danny! Thank you for your support! The Great Lakes region is north-central US States and Ontario (bordering the Great Lakes). We will be coming out with a video very soon about how much we paid for the yurt and land, so keep an eye out for that. We were able to get a permit for the yurt without any issues, but it completely varies by locality. Right now we carry water from nearby or melt snow, but we hope to drill a well someday. Take care!

    I'm in the process of building a tiny home on a flatbed but since I've been seeing more about yurts I'm tempted to change my mind. Having a yurt gives you more options with the type of land you live on.

    • @sam_zach
      @sam_zach  Год назад +1

      Shaun, it’s been a great option for us, though we didn’t go into the project with building skills or tools. So an instruction manual and a days of work setting it up appealed to us. It has its pros and cons, just like everything.

    • @jeffreyallen1290

      Yurts are fantastic but you need to be sure that your state and county will allow one. Here in Colorado yurts are allowed in some areas and but more often not. Yurts can also be cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The insulation that comes with a yurt kit is not generally very thick, but can be increased by adding 1/2 inch flexible foam panels sold in home stores. I lived in a 16 footer for a year and have always wanted to do it again, but in a larger one.

    • @shaunhall960
