  • Hi guys! This is the First episode of "DIY on how to replace rear struts on a BMW E39 sedan". In this particular video I am showing you the interior disassembly procedure to reach the three mounting nuts that mount the upper strut to the body of the car. It is quite a lot of job, so just watch! I hope you enjoy it :)

Thanks a million for a great instruction, you gave me the guts to do this repair! It seemed quite complicated but it actually took just like 20 minutes to disassemble enough in order to access those strut nuts underneath the speakers. As others commented, there is no need to remove the speaker grilles. It also turned out that it was unnecessary to remove the seat belts - you can just slide the rear window shelf down in the back rest position and let it sit there during the rest of the operation.

Wow this is insane. I need all 4 of mine replaced because of giant speed bumps and crappy roads in my area. Potholes are everywhere. Mine are leaking. I am just gonna have a shop do the job for $1,100. I am sticking with the OEM Sach's struts the car came with. I have a 2001BMW 530i with the Sport package. You did a good job on the video.Everything is clear and easy to see how you disassembled everything

Great detail, thanks for this 👏. Really helped me in both disassembling and in getting the order right for reassembly!

What if your seats fold down? Mine has the 60/40 split fold with center pass through.

I don't understand why the speaker covers have to be removed?

You’re right maybe that step is not necessary, but the problem is all the others steps are mandatory LOL!

I love the E39 but this is just crazy to think you have to do all this disassembly just to get to the shock mounting nuts. Even removing seatbelts? that's a safety issue

      Yeah, that's a poor design 🤦‍♂️

@@150ls this kind of makes me laugh. It's just a few steps and after watching this video it went very quickly for me. I replaced all of the suspension arms and shocks/ springs/ball joints on the vehicle and I would say the removal of the interior is probably less than 5% of the total time for the job.

Really stupid design, they could easily be three captive nuts that you just screw into from underneath. They did this on purpose.

This is why I would never consider owning a BMW. Typical have to disassemble half the car for any repair. Best piece advice to mechanics over estimate the job so the customer takes it elsewhere.

That problem is specific to E39 sedans. Earlier and later models are way more accessible, so are E39 station wagons.
