    Can't believe everyone missed the part where he forgot to install the rubber grommet on the bottom of the spring.

    quick comment - instead of using a 2x4 to hold the suspension down, just grab the trusty jack that comes with your e39 and use that!

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 лет назад +1

      That's a good thought! The wood is suggested however because it is soft, and you don't want to scrape the undercoating from the frame of the car with something metal like a jack.

      nevermind just seen this post. yea thats what i use is a jack to let it down. sorry

      Dude you're my goddamn hero. Been fighting with the rear left after the lower bolt to the carrier hub snapped. Found this video with the 2x4 and realized that wasn't going in no matter how hard I tried. OEM jack has probably never been used but holy shit did it come in clutch today. Thank you!

      The spring pad is clear, so it's hard to see ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    Question if I didn’t put the block of wood in there to keep the spring from collapsing how do I extend the spring back out?

  • @LPQwerty
    @LPQwerty 3 года назад

    it was enough to unscrew the shock absorber without unnecessary disassembly of the wheel arch and other parts

  • @camaroiowaguy23
    @camaroiowaguy23 7 лет назад +2

    why would the suspension collapse? gravity is pulling it down not up.. need explanation on that part

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  7 лет назад +4

      It's just the design of the rear control arms and suspension. The shock is forcing the trailing arms down into position, once the shock is removed it collapses up several inches into its natural resting place. Hope that helps a little!

      @camaroiowaguy23 7 лет назад

      thank y ou yea that makes sense. i just used this video yesterday to do mine. but because i ran into problems i only did the one side that was bad. my spring was broke and had a piece of coil detached. good call on that piece of wood man that does make sense!

  • @ruppertferenc3431
    @ruppertferenc3431 4 года назад

    Hi. Done this work yesterday. The really must is only. Lift up the car, remove the wheel. Disconnect the upper swing arm on tire side. Remove the brake caliper. Diconnect the shock. Simple remove it. Not necessary the inner wheel hole covering remove and the remove of fuel tank connection and remove the stab connection. Oh man... And the Wood something...... Why??? "just an unnecessary test of strength".Painfull. Dont be an armchair mechanic! My car 39m5.

    I put the block of wood in although I had to shave off an inch or so to get it in there. I got a new entire strut assembly and spring from Pelican and the new strut seems like it is about 2 inches too long. They have always given me the correct parts. Did the suspension rise up: How can I get it down or could I leave the compressors on until I get it in there?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  7 лет назад

      Jordan I'm sure the shock is fine, couldn't hurt to double check the part number though. Just Google what number is on the shock to cross reference. The suspension collapses up which is the purpose of the wood block. I recall I had a friend help stand on the trailing arm to help align the end of the shock so I could bolt it back on. It's not easy. Be very careful with jack stand positioning and safety for the final steps.

  • @jnambo5500

    Question. I know this is probably not relevant but when replacing rear wishbone & guide links, should I raise my suspension a bit before torquing down my suspension?

    • @michaelXXLF
      @michaelXXLF 4 года назад

      According to the manual the car has to stand on the floor under its own weight plus a driver. It is mandatory!
      You can also use a jack to raise the suspension though not "a bit" but to the correct ride hight! Either measure before-hand or check manual.

    Whats the torque measure for the last three nuts that are located on top of the strut tower? Mine makes subtle creaking noises after i replaced them, and im assuming its bc i tightened them while the car was in the air and didnt torque them either. Thank yo

    Was there a reason why you didn't reinstall your spring pads?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 лет назад +1

      Honestly I forgot! Super common in the E30 world to remove spring pads. They really make no difference with or without.

    • @kastewart1001
      @kastewart1001 6 лет назад

      I bet you end up with broken springs at the bottom without the pad to distribute the force evenly around the support. I replacing both rear springs that broke at this location.

    • @sanjinred
      @sanjinred 6 лет назад +3

      actually they do in the terms of force distribution between metals. With rubber you avoid vibration induced cracks on the shock absorber metal surface

    • @BIMMERZEITT

      not M model per se, these are factory m-technic springs or "sport" package springs for a 530i which are different than base model 530i springs
