Best interview on the overlap yet, Scholesy opened up like never before and it was a refreshing, honest insight into his thought process, career, his family’s life and the subject of autism. Brilliant player, world class talent and has retired gracefully. Legend.
Everyone says this every time 😂😂
Never seen scholes. Like this . Dry sense of humour love it
Totally agree
@@johnpearson709 I remember being surprised a few years ago when I seen an ex player saying he was one of the biggest jokers
Probably my favourite one so far. Being a Liverpool fan the Carra one was decent and the Gerrard one was ok, this one was great.
As a United-fan with an autistic son aswell, this hit hard. I had no idea Scholesy had a son with autism.
It can be extremely difficult at times, especially at a young age. My boy is now 14 and has probably had a different development than young Scholesy. He is catching up to his own age and is a happy kid. Hopefully Scholes Jr. has a happy life ❤
Same here bro, the struggle is real, definitely challenging but it's comforting in a way to see Paul talk so openly about the struggles we face on a daily basis, all the best to you and yours pal.
I’m a foster cater to two SEN boys, one with global development delay and one with autism as their prime difficulties and literally had the biggest meltdown today after a hospital app. Bit, scratched, strangled screamed and punched me all the way from the hospital to the car and then trying to get him buckled in the car. So was so nice to watch this now and hear someone that admire first off but also just someone else’s views and speak so openly about it can be such a struggle but so rewarding and they’re so much more appreciative of the smaller things when you’re having good times. Sort of makes up for them kick offs 😂. All the best with your families guys you’re doing a great job ❤
I’ve got a little boy who’s 3 in November who’s going through the diagnosis now for autism
It’s a struggle to get to grips of it some days and people don’t understand about autism and the government don’t do enough for kids with autism we are looking at over a year to get a diagnosis , wish you all the best in life great for scholes to speak about it
My son too has autism. Everyday Is difficult. We all do the best for our kids for them to be happy despite the difficulties and struggles they face daily. It’s warming to see how Scholsey talks about it so openly here and can relate to us all as we do to him. He is such a down to earth, lovely guy. A United legend and one of the best midfielders of our generation. Such an amazing person
Autism is definitely a vast spectrum. Some people can function pretty fine in society, some people require a lot more help
Never stop doing this Gary, these interviews go beyond football, I sit here and genuinely learn something new, best wishes to Paul Scholes and his family, humble and strong
You should try reading a book.
If Gary could just shut up about United and stick to these I’d be much happier 😂
The absolute opposite of a standard interview or talk show and a million times better for it. Genuine warmth, humour, friendship and insight into both men's character. I'm not football fan and only intended to watch for a minute because Paul Scholes always came across as so self-contained. 40 minutes later... Brilliant stuff.
Gary really cares for scholsey - really nice to see and so genuine
Neville only cares about Salford FC & the Labour Party 👍

Paul Scholes is fantastic to listen to when he's comfortable and speaking to somebody he trusts so he can open up in the way he wants to. Comes across so differently. Genuinely class watch this and Gary is probably one of the only people who could get it from him. Class interview.
Genius
Paul Scholes Genius
City fan but what a legitimate legend. Nothing but respect. The stuff about his son really hit me. Absolutely top class fella. Amazing job, Gary.
Go on out of that
I think even City and Scousers respect Scholsey - he's a no BS, good guy and such a player !
As a Manchester United fan I respect all the great English clubs and their emblematic players, even City and Liverpool. There is no point in hating each other honestly. When Man Utd is not involved, I always support other English teams. And am not even English. I just love the Premier League and it sounds fair to me to back up the English teams.
Respect
Had tears in my eyes listening to Scholesey talk about Aidan. Good to hear how open he was talking about autism. Wishing for more progression for Aidan!
You must be an emasculated man to cry so easy.
If they ever draft you to the military, you're done for..
You look emotional mate
I'm reaching out for a friend. Please
The chemistry between these two is amazing and it makes watching an absolute pleasure. What is so endearing about Scholesy is the fact he's such a relatable, down to earth bloke who you could meet in the pub, despite being one of the best footballers ever. His openess and candid account of his mental struggles, despite a world class career, money and fame (what society indoctrinates you to believe will make you happy), is refreshing. A breath of fresh air watching this.
Well said 👏
Overrated though
@@charlielad6124 I disagree, he was not overrated, not in the slightest.
He is also the reason Rooney changed his mind and stayed at the club...after a drink and chat down the local pub.
He'd be sat on his own in the pub not speaking to anyone though wouldn't he? 🤣
Liverpool fan, grew up watching Scholes carve my team apart year after year with his incredible passing. What a player, and what a man. Love his approach to life. Love his honesty and how humble he is.
Better than Slippy G
Respect.
Ignore the trolls... I am a life long United fan and I have always tried to recognise talent nomatter who they are or who they play for. Paul Scholes is my favourite player of all time because of his attitude, ability and dedication to the club, but deep down everyone knows that Liverpool have some truly great players, past and present.

Liverpool fan here and I've always hated to admire many of the players and mindset of this class of players from them united fergie days, but I have an absolute admiration for the human being that Paul Scholes is after this deep insight to his journey in life among his private family matters and even how he thinks, a very strong minded individual and so so grounded, thanks for this, top men....
Great interview, open, brave and honest to discuss personal family topics. Wish him and his family all the very best.
Haha brave....
@@dancarver9995 how's that amusing? Yeh he's a multi millionaire successful sportsman, but opening up about kids and personal space takes some nads.
damn right mate, Legend, big up to Scholesy & his family.
Stunning and brave!..
@@dancarver9995 u are a clown
The segment about his son really hit home for me, I’ve got a disabled daughter and so many similar traits with Aiden, already respected Scholesy but this interviews made me respect him even more. You can see he’s got things going on but he’s old school in keeping it too himself
Paul Scholes what a player and genuine good man. Sounds like he’s an even better Dad. YNWA.
🐐comment
His humility is mind-blowing. As a player he was an absolute joy to watch.
It's really cheered me up seeing someone like scholesy who comes across generally closed emotionally, truly open up. I bet it made him feel better. Fair play to Gary. Well done Scholesy. On and off the pitch mate.
thank you Gary Neville for this interview, I am a 41 year old Romanian and I remember watching you guys on the TV and the great Manchester Utd squad of mid 90s - early 2000 play, but most importantly for me as I was only a child were those long range goals I was scoring with Paul Scholes in the FIFA games, used to make me so happy man, ... I have been watching a lot of The Overlap interviews and I can tell you none before got my attention and involvement then the 2 interviews with Paul Scholes, don't know why, but I really appreciated his openness and sincerity and honestly speaking there is a lot to learn from a guy that achieved everything and he stayed grounded and just a beautiful genuine normal human being ...
One of my heroes Scholesy what a genius of a footballer he was. Great interview, it just shows how normal a man Paul is , reminds me of people where i come from honest and humble , thanks for the memories Scholesy and best of luck for all your family in the future.
We too have a 3 year old with autism and people like you scholesy bringing to light your experiences have helped the people we know try to understand what we are going through on a daily basis. There is light at the end of the tunnel after all. Please keep sharing. I'm a lifelong United fan. Loved watching you play football. Love the show Gary.
One of the best ever interviews on The Overlap imo. I mean Scholsey was always a man of very few words anyway so it's actually refreshing to see him be so open about his life especially when it came to talking about his family his son's autism that must've been difficult.
I love the fact that Scholesy is very cutting in what he says no holds barred just says how it is in one sentence. There should be an Overlap where the whole of the class of 92 meet up & have a bloody good catch up treat us viewers to an absolute treat.
That would be excellent....the chat between Neville,Giggs & Beckham about wife beating allegations & shamelessly plugging the Qatar World Cup for millions of pounds would be a fantastic listen.
@@dancarver9995 lmao what a nobhead you are
@hfc Liverpool fan mate.
@@dancarver9995 I don't remember anything about Beckham or Neville apparently beating their wives?
I’ve watched every United player here on overlap and you notice is they all are humble, very self critical and kind of loners (Roy, Paul, even Becks to a certain extent). All they wanted was to be home with family and play for United. Have to give it to Sir Alex for identifying these amazing players and making them world class.
Whilst Sir Alex definitely deserves massive credit for the role he played I think the majority of the credit should go to the academy coaches who nurtured them into becoming the down to earth superstars they became. Compared to today’s academy players who have barely played a minutes first team football but are already arrogant primadonnas in their own minds.
@@tyronebooth278 Agree…. They need credit too
Fehgie didnt make them world class your having a laugh
@@tyronebooth278it's the money though, back then they barely got anything but now they can be millionaires at age 18/19, Becks became arrogant once he got wealth and world fame, he's not the nice humble guy he portrays in the media, he has a nasty side to him
Watching more of Scholes on interviews and pundit. I've realised how intelligent he is behind the respected quiet football talent. All the best Paul Scholes!
I’m 29, have high functioning autism, and also work with kids/teenagers. I know for a fact that, just by talking for a short period about Aiden, his struggles and how it’s affected the whole family, Paul has just made some parents realise that it’s okay to talk about these subjects in such an open way. I had absolutely no idea and he deserves credit for talking about it, as does Gary for bringing it up and asking questions in such a respectful and delicate manner. Remains one of my favourite RUclips channels ❤️
Never heard Paul Scholes do many interviews let alone be so open an honest. Seems like he struggles a bit in life sometimes, but like many people, his personal pride stops him talking to anybody about it. A lot of men are like that. Great episode with a genuinely world class footballer. Zidane said he was the best player he ever played against. Enough said.
it's called life... nothing is always full of 'ups'. Scholes is just talking how most of us get on with it... no need to pay stupid money to see a therapist when you literally have tv/family/friends/movies/food/drinks/exerice/books, honestly people just need to shut the fuck up and bear with it as long as it's not controlling your life; Scholes curtails those emotions through life/experience and he's happy enough to showcase there are downs.
At the end of the day... vanilla ice cream and decent movie? A bit of playstation and couple of beers? Reading a good Grisham or a fantasy novel with a cup of tea? Sending a What'sApp message to a mate of family member? This is normal... this new generation are massive snowflakes.
Scholes is not only a world class player he's a decent, real and down to earth person aswell.
Big respect from an Everton fan
Easily the best Overlap yet! Would happily watch 12 hours of Scholesy just talking away, seems like a proper down to earth no nonsense bloke. Watching Gary and him bounce off one another brings back good memories of the old United😭
This is my absolute favorite Overlap. I think Scholesy is such a fantastic person and to see him be so open…well it was such a pleasure to watch.
Neville is such a decent bloke. He really cares about his mates and how they are doing in life.
If it gets him paid. He hasn’t reached out to any of the kids who flopped at United and had nothing else in life they wanted to do
@@mattkhanna what is that supposed to mean tho? How can he do anything for player's that never made it? They lived different lives ie being a professional footballer you hardly have time for your own family due to training all the time, playing away, and then the same with international football. How can you possibly make time to do anything else?
@@Red-Rambo so you’re saying his mates can only be world class players ? You don’t think he made friends with anyone else while at the club?
@@mattkhanna where did I say that? If thats what you got from my comment then we will just leave it there 🤣
Paul Scholes = World Class. There's a reason he will always be one of the greatest midfielders of his generation and a Manchester United icon. Truly a legend as a professional, a parent, and a person.
🤝
he was THE best, if he had a Carrick or Keane with him, it was absolute nothing stopping the team for years and years
Gerrard and Lamps well better
Lampard was way more classier a footballer than scholes will ever be
@@rambo235 Zidane, Iniesta, Xavi and Pirlo disagree. So do I.
A beautiful choice by Scholes to be so open and wonderfully handled by Gary - quality message.
Thanks Gary for this interview. You really get alot of stick, I think unfairly, from people that can't appreciate what you do for football and the punditry. But I think you are a genuine bloke with a warm kind heart. Keep doing your thing Gary. Massive respect.
Much love Scholsey. Hope it gets easier with the son... You are ever a Legend
Great interview, Scholesy is not only a role model for younger footballers with his attitude, but a genuine decent human and great family man. Several footballers today could take note ;-)
Still gives his daughter pedicures to this day.
Maybe not the toe nail biting thing... But i take your point
Honestly amazing content. Always knew Scholsey was an absolute don. This just solidified it. The way he spoke so openly about all subjects of his life and the way Gary gets his guests to open up is a true insight for all us fans to hear. Love that 🤝
That's a fantastic interview. Two old mates having a chinwag. It was so natural. The Shop Steward is a great interviewer and the Greatest Midfielder of his Generation was prepared to open up a bit. Big respect.
Just a real genuine human being. Wish you and your family nothing but the best.
After seeing the personalities of MU players and how long they dominated the EPL, it makes sense why they maintained success for a longtime. They’re all mentally strong, leaders and they were genuine friends. It’s hard to assemble such personalities today. Alex Ferguson is a genuine insightful leader.
Very well said
Keano & Scholesy are by far the best two interviews so far on the overlap
The keane one was unreal!
We've got a 16yr old autistic son. It was so nice to hear Scholesy opening up about it. There were so many similarities between his story and our own. Even in these modern times, in some circles it can still seem like a bit of a taboo subject to those that don't understand, or haven't experienced it. Thank you n well done Scholesy lad. Not just a fantastic footballer, but also a top guy. 👍
Absolutely love this interview. I commend Paul for opening up about his son’s autism. It’s understandable why he never really did interviews. Talking about has shone a completely different light on you. I love that you talking doesn’t change anything about the situation. However it does take the weight of your shoulders when you hear of other peoples experiences and makes you see you aren’t alone. Thank you for sharing that part of your life Paul. Englands best ever player.
Scholes: I don't remember, don't remember, I don't remember a lot of things no. Neville: Do you remember when you scored against City Scholes: Yeah.

He has actually, just counted the number of words he said after the FA Cup game against Arsenal, he said 22 words. So you're wrong
Gary this is absolutely brilliant. It started slowly but got better and better. Such an interesting insight into a quiet reserved incredibly humble man. Scholesy was so brave in this interview. I teared up watching this one. I have so much respect for Scholesy.
I 'm an Australian and a huge City fan having lived in Manchester for 5 years.....I saw Paul Scholes play for the first time live at the Vincent Kompany testimonial game at the Etihad.......this bloke quite simply is a straight up star......he played the whole game as an attacking midfielder....bossed the pitch like it was his own and at times looked like he had his own ball.....I'm always going to be a City fan and look forward to thrashing MU at every Derby......but from that night and this interview.....I am now truly a Paul Scholes fan....

I. am not sure there has been an English player with better technique, vision and game intelligence. .....an utter legend as a. player and even more so as a person. Its so refreshing to see a genuinely humble footballer. You can take what you do seriously without taking yourself too seriously. I knew Scholes is a great player, but I didn't know that he is such a great dad too. Total respect for sacrificing yourself for your kids and being so understated.
Brilliant interview, Paul is clearly a quiet shy individual but one of the most talented players ever to lace a pair of football boots. Legend
From a City fan and a born and bred Oldhamer, I really enjoyed that. Great to see my old haunt of Alexander Park looking so well. I think Paul has always felt comfortable among the people of Oldham, he's one of us. He could have so easily moved out to the rich environment of Cheshire but I think he craved normality (assuming the people of Oldham are normal) 🙃 and he has to be commended for that. I see him quite often and it's almost like bumping into someone you know and not one of the best midfielders the Premier League has ever seen and someone who is known the world over. I wish Paul and his family all the best.
