    The only thing to change now is to convert it to belt drive 😊 What do you think Paul?

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 Год назад

      Seems like a great idea, no need to lube the chain. But this rear triangle does not allow a Carbon gates belt drive, as you need a split in the seat stay or something to get it trough.
      So in this case he would need to go for Veer Split Belt Pro, it's a belt that has a split in it.

    • @astonmtb2428
      @astonmtb2428  Год назад +3

      I would love a belt drive (and have used them before with success, I have a gravel bike with one at home) but that adds another layer of expense and complication that I can't really justify right now. The chain is OK and is much easier to source and fit.

    Thanks for getting a mic!
    I’m impressed how supple the fork is at the 62° HTA.
    I’m on a similar journey, trying to figure out what feels best on a MTB. Right now, the solution is to own different bikes for different disciplines, but there’s always an adjustment when swapping between them. A gearbox / Ti frame is a very, very enticing combo

    • @astonmtb2428
      @astonmtb2428  Год назад

      Its actually the third mic I got, but the first one that actually works with an iphone haha!
      I don't think the Ti is necessary at all, I only did it to try and appease some weight weenies and because, well, my job is making these things. If I was just getting one to ride myself the steel is absolutely fine and much cheaper.

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 Год назад +1

    8:40 Any reason why you did not go for barrel nuts at the post mounts? I see it would not work in this particular design as there is not enough room at the front. But wouldn't this be a good idea, like Nicolai uses.

    • @astonmtb2428
      @astonmtb2428  Год назад +1

      I just asked Egerie to build it for me and thats what mount I got! He uses many off the shelf frame components and I don't know if there is a barrel nut option, plus this frame is steel rear so less likely to damage threads than in a alloy frame

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 Год назад +1

    8:10 Which with were the tyres? 2.40 seems to be common these days. I've not tried the,, but tried 2.40 Michelin Wild Enduro, they felt really good at 23mm rims, but felt great at 30mm, in cornering, and even when doing fakies, but they seem so qear a bit quickly, but bead does not look like I took sandpaper to it like on Maxxis. So far two pairs of Michelin tyres al straight, none were warped, and thread was aligned. it was never the case on Maxxis for me. Most were warped from new and got much worse. Bead seems to be great on Michelin, but I did not ride them as much so not a fair comparison.
    But I will definitely keep an eye on what you think about tyres.

    Epic build, as always!!! I just have one question: having the pinion system, so only one sprocket on the rear wheel, could it be viable, or even better, to use a single speed hub, like the paul components word, instead of converting a normal one? Like you said, the more symmetrical is the wheel, the better

    • @astonmtb2428
      @astonmtb2428  Год назад +1

      Yes it would be. On this build I went for 157x12 to make it easier for me testing and changing lots of parts all the time between bikes. Pinion actually make their own hubs too,which would work well.

      It's a matter of setting your suspension up correctly. My Megatower can do the same thing on both wheels at the same time as well. Any bike can do it if it's balanced right.

    • @th_js
      @th_js Год назад

      @@gregvarga753 But it doesn't really mean anything, you can't set your bike up based on how it reacts with a ghost rider on it.

      @gregvarga753 Год назад

      Obviously I'm not setting it up for a ghost rider. As I said. If your suspension is balanced, it can do it. In my opinion, an unbalanced suspension will not be a good ride feel anyway.

    • @th_js
      @th_js Год назад +2

      @@gregvarga753 Yes, but depending on what "balanced" means to a rider, and rider weight, and obviously the bike, it might or might not stick to the ground like that. So it's not necessarily a good or a bad thing. Certainly looks cool, though.

  • @lopon12
    @lopon12 Год назад +1

    Do the shock bearings keep stress off the shock then? Allowing it to move freely?

    • @tobyvision
      @tobyvision Год назад +2

      Spherical bearings help reduce transverse(any loading that is not directly on the shock axis) loading. This can result in reduced overall friction, as well as longer life for the shock. For a long time, the arms supporting the shocks on bicycles were not stiff enough for this to matter, often by design. On modern carbon fiber designs in particular, the arms are often extremely stiff, but the industry has not responded by changing the shock supports.

    • @astonmtb2428
      @astonmtb2428  Год назад +1

      Exactly what he said!
      The friction can be quite a lot on a shock shaft considering the force that is going through it - it only needs to be a little out of line to create a lot of friction

    You've gotta admit that gripshift is shithouse. Having to twist your wrist around the bar every time you change gears would be absolutely shocking in the middle of a race. As soon as pinion comes out with a regular shifter it'll be sweet as

      The gripshift isn't ideal, but I don't mind it too much: I have some experience riding Moto's so am used to the wrist movement. After a few months riding a Pinion system you learn that there are lots of benefits to be had when being able to shift at nearly anytime: you''ll find yourself changing gear on descents when braking and can see the next climb coming up, for example.
