I like how Todd is still..."Todd" - meaning he's not a prude or an almost "mystic" figure ala other quasi asexual characters. He's a stoner who has his heart in the right place, but he's definitely prone to seriously bumbling things up. In short, he's someone in his mid-20s.
another little thing i noticed during the asexual meet up scene was that some of the people there were background characters that have been in the show since like season 2, i just thought that was such an interesting little touch
I'm so glad that the writers decided to actually put effort into writing an asexual character instead of making it a dumb joke or something. Yet another reason why bojack horseman is one of, if not the best show I've seen
I didn't know asexuality was a thing until I saw Bojack Horseman.
I felt exactly the same as Todd.
Me to but just kinda like I'm straight but sometimes I don't feel sexual at all
@@TasosJoker demisexual?
@@lolalock310 Or grey-asexual
Same here. Thanks to this show I finally realized that I'm asexual and after some self-reflection I came out as aroace
another fun asexual nod is his modified prison tattoos. the skinhead one was turned into skinny jughead (a crack at the ace aro erasure in river dale).
Right? I remember in season 1 when Emily asked if Todd had a crush his response made me think "hmm he might be asexual you never know" but then I immediately shut it down with "Of course he isn't asexual we don't /get/ good representation". But then the end of season 3 came and I may have cried a bit because I was going through a similar experience with figuring out my sexuality and seeing my favorite character go through the same thing made me feel so validated and better. I have so much respect for this show and how well it contiued to rep the ace community in season 4!
Eliezra Orel 😄
Bojack Horseman is a huge part of me discovering that I'm asexual. Without Todd, it's highly likely i would not have properly discovered what i am.
I will always be thankful for Bojack Horseman for that.
I started watching BoJack Horseman for its ace representation and fell totally in love with the show on its own merits. It is one of the best shows on NetFlix/TV. And Todd is an excellent representation of our community.
i'm not asexual but as a part of LGBTQIA community i find it so amazing that tv nowadays adds more and more representation of sexual minorities in shows. when i found out todd was ace i was so happy not only because i kinda sensed it from the beginning, but also because you don't see many asexual characters (especially those who have main-ish roles) and that touch from creators of bojack was very thoughtful and refreshing. :)
As a bisexual I also really, really appreciated Todd's season 4 storyline because it took me forever to be comfortable with a label and I feel like I went through so many of the same emotions as him when I was coming out.
I love how they also clear up incorrect stereotypes and information, like explaining asexuals can get married
I like NEVER cry over books, movies or tv shows but when Todd officially came out as ace in season 4 I C R I E D. (And rewatched it multiple times).
Bojack Horseman has quickly become my favourite tv show
My teenage son didn’t quite have all the bells click until Todd came out.
If you go back and watch the support group scene again, you will spot the lady who asked Todd out there.
Yes, I'm so happy about this!! I'd sort of got to the point where I have a Pavlovian reaction of "oh no, what's it going to be like this time?" whenever someone says there'll be an asexual character in something (you're probably a bit young to remember the build up to the House episode, the teaser trailers, the discussion and excitement that it would be finally - finally! - an asexual couple on TV, and then the shock and outrage when House said "anyone who says they're asexual must be either lying, dying or dead" and it turned out that one had a brain tumor that caused his asexuality (???) and the other was lying to the world for some reason (?????) - so, SO bad), but I was really pleasantly surprised at how nicely this was handled in Bojack Horseman. (: Well done to all involved!
Raphael in Shadowhunters is A. Jug head shoukd be from riverdale but he's been straightwashed
The asexual erasure in Riverdale is disgusting.
Him and the blond girl are my sister's favourite characters, so, I don't mind
They are probably cute together
can i just say that i never got chills watching a youtube video until this one, something about your energy and your words is just SO perfect.
Knowing BoJack Horseman, Todd's relationship can inly end in heartbreak and discussions on rooftops about if people can ever truly be happy. Also, based on the attention to detail in the rest of series, I reckon the ring thing was just a case of the showrunners not knowing that it exists
Give it a chance though. Not too long ago people thought that a show rule was to have whoever used the one use of the word 'fuck' per season that they use would permanently never be Bojack's friend again. And just when that seemed to be a rule, they broke it (which I loved, because I hate dumb plot predicting rules like that). So it's a show I wouldn't call predictable. It always changes something up from one season to the next.
Todd is actually the character I can relate to the most in the show.
Yay! That's what I love about BoJack! It started of as a pretty regular sitcom, although a little bit darker and certainly good, but then it goes on to touch so many subjects not many shows/films really touch on and they do it so tastefully and so relatably and accurately! They potray asexuality, dementia, self-deprication and so many other stuff so that you can really relate to them and getting how it feels! :)
I'm currently still finding out whether I'm asexual myself and the character of Todd makes me feel so much more Ok with the possibility of reaching the conclusion that I am. :)
not gonna lie the coming out episode made my cry. Crazy how representation makes you feel. Todd was my halloween costume this year. check out Sirens, VooDoo is canon ace, and the surrounding characters aren't that dickish about it
You gotta watch Season 5... I feel like Todd continues to grow with asexuality and him being comfortable with interest in a relationship, you kind of called it
I love watching people get excited about representation. It's such a beautiful feeling when you get to see yourself in media. You feel seen as a human which is such a basic need.
That brings us up to three Asexual characters. Jughead Jones, Charlie Weasley and now Todd Chavez
tiamta is jughead ace ?? i watched all of riverdale a few weeks back and i didn’t get that impression at all, i may have to research. also is charlie weasley being ace canon??
(i just googled the jughead/ace thing and he’s ace in the comics but they changed it for tv urgh :(((( )
Unfortunately Charlie Weasley's aceness is just speculation. JKR has only said Charlie's "not gay despite his lack of interest in women, instead preferring to continue studying dragons". Also, he never married and never had children. But that's it, no actual confirmation.
Embly I'm very glad they changed Jughead from asexual to heterosexual
Crowley from 'Good Omens' by Neil Gaiman.
Back in the 90's no one really cared about aseeeeexual stuuuff
Manu fm well they should have, it’s always existed: deal with it x
He is referencing the end theme of BoJack Houseman.
Sirens, Shadowhunters, Seven ways we lie, Archie comics, are all other types of media that have asexual characters.
Non Bunnary I’m so sad that they took away jugheads asexuality in riverdale
That character at the end of season 4? Her name was Yolanda. Although I do not remember what kind of species she was...
Yolanda was an Axolotl!
I'm so happy to see someone else from the ace community talking about representation bc it's so hard to come by in all platforms. As far as I know, the only other ace character in a tv show is Raphael Santiago from Shadowhunters. He unfortunately isn't a main character but he does have a romantic relationship and has to explain his sexuality to his partner. In addition, Shadowhunters also has much more wonderful representation and I would totally recommend it. I've watched a couple episodes of bojack horseman and had no idea that they included this plot line into season 4 and I'm honestly so thrilled. I feel like we're moving up in the world bc 2 examples of ace rep is better than none
You should really check out Streven Universe. Characters there are very well developed and in gets pretty deep after while with relationships and stuff like that. the character there are genderless and it will get pretty good in later seasons. rly check it out :)
Ondřej Bobovský i shall !!
It's great for his character it makes so much sense due to his innocence, he doesn't need a sexual relationship.
I too identified as "a nothing" until I was 17 and Facebook introduced me to asexuality. When you spend a large chunk of your life not knowing how to describe who you are, labels become so important and relieving.
It's awesome that more and more shows are representing more and more people.
The thumbnail for this video loops like magic.
I think it pretty messed up how Todd left the Rabies victims in the forest and not only stoped trying to help them but started to exploit them for money.
Yeah, that was an attempt at a joke that did not land as well as they thought it would.
I'm happy to see more representation for Asexuals 👍
Introduced a childhood friend to the show once I saw this storyline. Wouldn't tell them which character it would be so that they'd watch from the top and be invested when they found out. They said they hoped it would be him a few episodes in. They're totally hooked now.
This show was my favorite before this happened, but it's my all-time favorite after it. Being ace myself, I was actually screaming when he came out because I KNEW IT HA I KNEW HE WAS LIKE ME
As an Asexual myself. I am so glad to see representation
Oh god I’m crying with happiness again just remembering this!
This show literally helped me come out. Love BoJack horseman
Lovely video! I haven't seen the whole season, but I was really pleasantly surprised when Todd came out to BoJack. Yay for positive asexual representation!!
It feels more genuine then a lot of the claimed rep. He’s a full character with personality that we see often. When he came out, it wasn’t this earth shattering revelation, it was just that. Him realizing where he stood and coming out to those around him. His funny personality didn’t change and the asexuality didn’t disappear after he came out. He goes on to learn more from the community around him.
I'm just now learning about the ace ring that's really cool, and as a newly self discovered aro ace, I want to learn more!
I’ve watched all of bojack horseman, and I love that Todd is asexual. But I think he might also be aromatic.
I LOVE TODD SO MUCH HES SUCH AND A BEAN AND IM SO HAPPY TO HAVE SOME ASEXUAL REPRESENTATION!! MY REACTION WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOURS I WAS JUST LIKE WHHHHAAAAATTTTT AND I LITERALLY CRIED WITH HAPPINESS! Bojack horseman is so incredible in many ways and I was so fucking happy when Todd came out, I have literally memorised the whole scene where Todd comes out and I’ve probably watched it at least 20 times!
I've been "deep-learning" about asexuality for the past month, and you channel's been a real great resource, thanks
I gotta say, I've heard about Todd before I knew I'm ace, and now I really really want to watch Bojack Horseman, so I'm really hlad the representation is good!
you gotta watch it i think it’s the best show of all time
Literally i had the same reaction of “IT MADE MY YEAR!”
Really nice video! It's great hearing about some actual good representation, especially being an Ace myself! Keep making these Ace themed videos, they're great!
I loved this video! However this is more of a question than anything, I class myself as bisexual but I'm not really interested in sex at all. So if I classed as asexual, would that still be without gender bias?
+Lizzie perhaps you could be biromantic but on the asexual spectrum? romantic and sexual orientations are distinct from eachother :) hope that helps, also thanks for watching !
If you're ace you can be aromantic, heteroromantic, biromantic, panromantic etc. If u label yourself as bisexual right now you're probably biromantic. [Like me :3]
I started watching BoJack Horseman because I had heard that Todd was asexual and even knowing it was coming him coming out hit me in the feels. I love the episode in season 5 where he meets Yolanda's parents because that discomfort you get from overly sexual everything is how it feels to exist as an aspec person ALL THE TIME.
REPRESENTATION IS GREAT ❤️
Could you do a follow-up episode on Season 5?
Embly and other who are also interested for more asexual character in TV, there was this critic of Bojack Horseman season 4 about Tod asexuality. There is a paragraph witch might be interesting for you.
8:50 It somewhat did? I think they handled both the relationship and breakup well and at the end of season 6 he gets another girlfriend through Bojack
Think about todd chavez honestly just makes me happy his character exists
As an asexual myself I don't card about labels or "need to find myself" etc. But it sure was an amusing turn of events when it was confirmed that Todd is "Ace" (I mean, it was lowkey possebility) but yea, I dig the way Bojack Horseman went with it, and it still goes in season 5, and as ussual, alot of dope writting and how they grain it out.
Note about the ace black ring, it would be reaaally out of Todd's character to wear one. Considering the research the makers/producers has done on asexuality then i'm certain they are aware of the ring.
I really heavily relate with Todd especially due to the fact that one he's asexual two he constantly tries to find distractions from the thought of meaninglessness however the only thing that would say that is somewhat different is probably that I feel like I'm more what Todd would be if he got even more depressed
definitely not as progressive as the rep you talk about here, but a british soap has had a character who seems to be ace in the last year or so. she’s not used the word asexual in the show, though the soaps official yt account has. definitely not the perfect rep but it’s something considering this is a very mainstream media in the uk ruclips.net/video/3mHqjmqDlSQ/видео.html
There isn't a lot of asexual representations (almost none lol) but if y'all wanna know, Raphael Santiago from shadowhunters is an asexual character and I honestly think he's such a good Representation.
If he’s not having relationships .. is he aromantic too? I’ve not seen the show, just clips, he sounds pretty aromantic to me (I’m just asexual, not aromantic, I didn’t relate as much as I wanted to)
There's also the girl in the fire fighter series thingy. I forgot what it's called
Sirens?
Hey, does anyone I think that Luffy from One Piece might be asexual??? He definitely doesn’t seem to have much emotional reaction to the women that throw themselves at him through out the series.... 🤷🏽♂️
I'm curious what sort of trials Asexual people face. You know what I mean?
Like any bigotry or hatred from other people? I'm just curious if any is received
Aaron Garcia Based on what I've read on Reddit, most asexuals face sheer confusion from others.
Erasure. Whenever someone brings up asexuality, some idiot is going to show up to tell us that "There are only three sexualities: hetero, gay and bi. Asexuality is made up." I mean, I'm glad that bi is now acknowledged, but eh. Also "It's actually a sickness, you should try hormones or something and/or get your head examined". Oh, but the worst thing is that the LGBTQA+ community is suddenly of the opinion that aces don't belong in it (and that A is for allies now instead of asexual) unless they're homoromantic or biromantic or something along those lines. If you're heteroromantic ace? Nope. Or aromantic? Nopety nope. "Lack of sexuality doesn't count as queer. You need to be non-hetero or at least trans" ... how does aro make hetero? And why is a heterosexual trans more queer than the distinct lack of any sexuality in aces? Your regular cis het looks at us just as funny, so I'd say that makes us more than queer enough to belong.
Jadeile Okay. Thanks for the response
There has been stories of asexuals facing corrective rape.
Quite late, but some people of the LGBTQ+ community don't acknowledge aces and aros as a part of the movement.
Bojack horseman has ended and everything is worse now.
Love todd thats my boy
ECHO!
I had *never* heard of an ace ring until now! 🤓
I recently started watching BoJack Horseman after discovering it had good ace representation. I’m not quiet at the point where Todd comes out as asexual. Bojack Horseman can be a little sexual though which makes me uncomfortable at times.
So why did he go on a Skype date and have an affair with the cartel guys daughter in s1
yayyyyYYyyYy
This is an old video but I love it
Asexual is just not being interested in sex?
very well said!!!! and ahh bojack horseman is sucH a good show
I'm super happy. :)
I’m kinda mad u only watched bojack for a asexual character
Seth Garner that's how i heard about it! i do actually enjoy the show and i rewatch it a lot too
Vrg está en inglés T-T
Eres tan hermosa
.
their is also Sheldon Cooper.
Celestial Salamander sheldon isn’t actually ace :(
They were going to portray Sheldon as a gray Asexual at one time but dropped it. Pissed a few people off from my understanding. If they would have done that it would have been a big deal
But I wouldn't have honestly have trusted BBT to have played him coming out as sensitivly as this. I have two friends that are an Ace couple who watch BBT religiously though and I think they would have liked that
Harry potta
Ha your not real
ChikaCherry / Artist of Trash oh no !!!!! that would be why it was so difficult to get ready for college this morning!! i couldn't see myself in the mirror because as an asexual, i don't exist !!!!!
that makes so much more sense thank you !! (also thx for giving me them sweet views x)
*you're
Ha! Fuck off.
Amory Addams Are you saying this to me?
MrFancyFox nope! they’re saying it to the original comment
06:00 "There was no stereotypes"
Because there is an actual asexuals stereotype ?
I think the stereotype, of sorts, is that asexuals don't/can't even really exist.
There are a few actually. 1. Asexuals are awkward around the opposite sex. 2. Asexuals are really sexual but haven't met the right person 3. Asexuals are afraid of sex. 4. Asexuals are all aromanatic. There really isn't enough representation yet to be a lot of stereotypes yet, and the little representation Ace people have have been purposely to contradict those stereotypes. It's kind of the opposite of what happened to gay people when they first got portrayed in the media.
Of course Asexuals are so rarely even talked about that there aren't a lot of stereotypes. But it was pretty surprising that a comedy series, and a character that was played mostly for laughs, would be the first to portray a minority group and play the portrayl 100% straight (no pun intended) especially since it dealt with sex.
