oh yes the 'are you sexually active' or 'could you be pregnant' questions. They keep popping up. I used to be annoyed. now I choose to be mildly amused. I can't allow decades (erm, centuries) of social bias to put me on a downer.
I love Brooklyn 99 but when I saw that scene I was really upset, just throwing asexual around as an insult sucks as it encourages misinformation that usually the show stands against
That line in b99 is totally something gina would say. The problem is that it's the only time asexuality is mentioned. Characters can say offensive things, but if the show never adresses that it's wrong, they're saying it's ok..
I have been incorrectly branded with several acronyms that can be found in the DSM. And I'm far from being the only one. That 'manual' has got a lot of misery to answer for. The Equality act 2010 should be amended. Sadly, we do not currently live in an era where leading politics are kind to minorities (that is why only minority parties such as the Greens openly think about minority groups). So expect a long wait for positive legislation changes.
Stephanie King Here in America there has been surprising progress this month on LGBTQ protections despite our idiot president and his minority hating cohort. The U.S Supreme Court affirmed that the 1964 Civil Rights Act also extends protections to LGBTQ people. This means that an employer cannot fire someone for being LGBTQ as was previously the case before this ruling. While asexuals were not specifically mentioned in the ruling, it could be implied to mean anyone of any sexual orientation has the same legal protections.
I'm a huge B99 fan, it's weird I've seen this a bunch of times and didn't even know Asexual was a thing let alone that I was one. On the plus side while I still love the show I've never liked Gina, she was the only character and only actress I disliked and when they wrote her out I felt the show improved a lot. Not seen that ep since finding my label a month ago. Now I'm wondering what else I've missed in shows 🤔
If you're looking for some good asexual representaion I would definitely reccomend BoJack Horseman! The asexual storyline starts to build up at the end of season 3 but it really explored in season 4 onwards
@@Embly99 I strongly regret stopping that show then. I used to watch it with my brother and we stopped 4 episodes into season 3 If I'd kept watching I may well have found my freaking label years ago 💜🤍🖤 Now I need to go back to it. I always planned too I just didn't know if he wanted too or if I should finish it alone. We both found the underwater section just a bit bland and I put it off because of it.
Desteny yes but in the end of the day the purpose of cop shows is to show that they are good cops. Not saying everyone has to stop watching cop shows it’s just my take on it
This is my first time watching your channel, and I have to say, I am really glad you are representing us all. Throughout trying to know more about asexuality, I have seen that some people mix sexual desire with sexual attraction. For example, they think that asexuals don’t like sexual intercourse, though in reality it has little to nothing to do with that. It’s just that we don’t experience sexual attraction. So it would be nice if people educated others more on this. My suggestion is, why don’t you make a video about how some asexuals do have sex, and some don’t. Also the one thing that surprised me the most was that asexuals can’t drive in Russia. Again, thank you so much for representing us.
@@sarahk5412 Emotional support animals (ESAs) are not the same as service animals. While a service animal may also be an ESA, not all ESAs are service animals. Service animals are trained and ESAs are not. Service animals are legally protected since they are trained to be in public to help with functioning tasks, such as grounding during a panic attack or flashback and ESAs are not legally allowed in spaces where pets are not normally since they are not trained.
I loved this video -- I feel like so much content about asexuality discusses what it is/other things I, as an ace person, already know. This was some genuinely new and interesting info to me! And I love that you're using your platform to call attention to BLM
Brooklyn 99 is my favourite show. I did however pick up on this the first time I watched it, pointing out to my friends who also love b99 that this comment was acephobic, and I got shut down. Just because you love a show doesnt mean you can’t point out it’s flaws and recognise its weaknesses, because no show is perfect
I'm from Spain too and it's so sad. Like, I think non-binary identities have only been mentioned by Errejón, but no one has ever mentioned asexuality, aromanticism or pansexuality
Love this so much Emi omg you queen 👏 I remember seeing that bit in b99 for the first time and my heart just sank a little but I've never seen anyone talk about it so good on you for telling it like it is, also totally couldn't stop flicking my eyes between "omg look at Arthur he's so cute" and "omg but look at Emi she's so gorgeoussss" lmaooo, love you land girl 💓
Someone once recommended I watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, saying it was a really great show in terms of diversity. I gave up after one episode because it's yet another case of a diverse cast being led by a white man. He appears first, speaks first, is billed first in the opening credits and if you look at promo pictures, DVD covers, etc he gets prominence. And the show is created by two white men. This is not diversity - we shouldn't be settling for this bare-minimum representation. Shows created by people who aren't white men, shows with a diverse cast where the lead/first billed is not a white man, there need to be a lot more of those shows for better representation. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, no. So I'm not at all surprised about the acephobia, though I'm appalled, but I never got far enough in the show to see it.
Awesome video, Emi! Very informative; I learned a lot! Great to see you back! I mean, WTF Russia To the best of my knowledge, I'm the only ace who plays bass in a heavy metal band. I've seen quite a few musicians who are ace, but I'm wondering if there are other aces who play the same music as I do. I wanna start a death metal band with nothing but aces, that'd be so cool! \m/ Anyway, you have a wonderful day and thanks for all that you do!
Interesting addition to the first point: When homosexuality was first "removed" from the DSM it wasn't actually removed, it was just reworded with the added the caveat of "unless the person identifies as homosexual" the exact same as it does with asexuality now. It wasn't until decades later it was officially completely removed, so hopefully that's something to eventually look forward to that there will be an acknowledged distinction between HSDD and asexuality in future editions.
Great video! It's really nice to see someone dive deeper into ace topics - discussing things other than 'what is asexuality' or 'how to know ur ace'- it can sometimes be really frustrating if thats the obly kinda ace content I find. So yeah thanks for the vid :3
I love the show New Girl, but I distinctly remember one specific line where Schmidt says something along the lines of his past self (who was overweight and socially awkward) being an “asexual nerd.”
I'm from Russia, to be honest I've never heard about this law (fact №3). I'll search for some information surely and maybe write here what I will find. Upd. МКБ -10 (International Classification of Dieseases) includes F60 - F69 diagnoses (I didn't find an asexuality there btw). Before getting license you should visit a therapist to get a note (medical reference) with your diagnoses (or lack of them). Idk why they decided that F60 - F69 diagnoses are dangerous for driving. There is F66 - basically depressions or anxiety related to orientation (BUT there is a remark that sexual orientation is not considered a disorder). According to МКБ orientation is not a disorder and you may drive if you are ace. What can not be said about transgenders unfortunately (F64). Upd.2. Also you should not have depression, affective disorders, drug addiction and alcoholism, epilepsy and etc. rg.ru/2015/01/13/voditeli.html article about that changes from 2015 year.
if u want a show that represents aces the shadow hunters is a good one! on of the main characters Raphael is an asexual vampire! (it specifically states in the show that he didn't 'become ace' from bring turned into a vampire but that he was born asexual!!)
Thank you for pointing out how sexual attraction is different from those other things... I experience those others but I feel a bit isolated sometimes because some of the humor that other aces make involve those (or a lack thereof)
To be fair when they rent a car or give you a license in Russia do they literally just ask you hey by the way are you asexual I know we got to ask since it's 1% of the world population and all? Yeah Russia is a dick to everybody that is part of the lgbtq community in general because they have a problem with gays as well so don't feel singled out.
Your beautiful embly awesome video iam also asexual and aromantic we are the most left out almost alienated orientation in existence hopefully people like you can change our representation love you embly awesome video
I just learned what androphilia and gynephilia is, thank you! its super interesting. I've being a bit confused about if im ace or just not a very sexual person for a while, i still don't know, but i keep looking.
Probably an unpopular opinion but whilst I wish asexuality was better represented in the media, it doesn't follow that TV series or films have a responsibility to include it. That just leads to pandering. If it fits the story it should be included, if it doesn't, it shouldn't. I also think people should be able to joke about asexuality, but currently, there is so little actual information about it that stuff like what Brooklyn did just leads to misrepresentation or invalidation (I'm looking at you, House)
it’s a good point. I feel like it should be mentioned in shows that talk about sexuality or sexual issues (Thanks Sex education we Stan) and if a characters arc could be about finding themselves and coming out just like they would if they were gay (Like in Bojack Horseman).
Oops didn’t get to finish my thought Anyway statistically there are more straight people but representation does matter. Precisely because as you said we then see misrepresentation I mean I never realized I wasn’t straight till something about asexuality popped up on my tumblr feed and I was kind of like “what are they talking about that’s normal”, and then being like “oh... most people would think the opposite, would think my experience is other.” So it helps other aces who may not know what ace is to be able to see it and go “huh?” Plus, it would make it so much easier to explain to people what ace is if you could go you know like that character from that one show.
I think more authors should consider writing stories about experiences that aren’t discussed so much because then you almost inherently have a more unique story. You don’t have to worry so much about being cliche if you’re writing a story that nobody’s written yet. At the same time, I’d want these stories written by people who actually care rather than people just slapping an “asexual” label on to whatever character and not bothering to explore that narrative in any meaningful way
I think I’ll be needing to buy another flag be cuz I’ve got the same issue and my ‘asexual’ flag was at comic con and on the packet it said ‘asexual flag’. Yh only just realised this, thank you ! ~.
I've been heavily involved in lgbtq+ stuff for most of my life and I've never seen the gynephilia flag before this, so there's almost no chance that people are going to assume that's the flag you're flying instead of the ace flag. If it's not bright pink I wouldn't stress about it.
Forming a line for the acronym to be ALGIBQTY (pr. Algi Biquity) can be said in one word, involves all the known types and sounds cooler. If ace is basically 'Not really interested, I feel it should go first. Then there's the "only one interest" followed by the "changable or both" categories then finally the ones that are less about who you like, and more about your own physical body and how you relate to it. And before anyone asks the Y is there cause I needed another 'vowel'. Maybe it stands for Yay?
When I see "Things You Didn't Know About..." videos, I always assume that I would now at least two or three of the things on the list. But the title of this one is correct; I didn't know these things.
This live helped me understand what the asexual sexuality is. There were even elements of the experiences @ChelseiIsObsessed described that I could definitely relate to, to my surprise. If you know someone who identifies as pansexual (and is happy to talk about it) I would be interested to watch a session similar to this... it might help me understand the distinction between pansexual and bisexual.
Bisexuality is attraction to more than one gender where gender is a factor. This might mean a preference for men, or for feminine people, or simply that the way you experience attraction feels different for people of different genders. Pansexuality is attraction to people regardless of gender, where all that really matters is who they are, not what they are.
Gina as a character in B99 always frustrated me, she is constantly being mean for no good reason, and not in a fun way like other characters can be. I'm not surprised her character is the one that said this. That being said wonderful video, this is definitely a topic that should be talked about more, and I enjoyed a video that went beyond the usual 101 stuff I already know.
Nice video. I think that the one about driving in Russia might be a bit of internet "fake news" though. Asexuality is not in the ICD-10 anywhere. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is but, as you've said, that it different from asexuality and it is also not a personality disorder. Also, the DSM-IV is just for the USA. It's still good to discuss issues that affect asexuals in the USA, of course, but note that it does not apply to you in England.
This video is amazing!!! Thank you so much, I didn’t know a lot of things from the list and I’m shocked! I can’t drive in Russiaaaa 😂 it’s a great thing that I don’t have a driving license
I wish there was more representation for asexuals that are also people of color. As a black ace, I just think I would be cool to see another ace that is my skin color. All well, at least we have Todd!
Lol maybe they are still in hiding...I was actually married and have children and its been a long journey of self acceptance. All the signs were there and when I reflect on my past relationships ie accusations of me cheating due to a lack of interest or interacting with men as if they were mates (I dont see men any differently from women as I don't think with my genitals😂)etc I just cringe. It's a long road but we are now demanding that our voices be rightly heard regardless of race. Well done to all the RUclipsrs raising asexual awareness 👍
Bojack Horseman actually introduced me to asexuality. Im not saying that the episode was a great representation but it definitely peaked my interest about the nuances of asexuality.
As a graphic designer, I think the difference between those two tones of purple on your flags can be written off as lazy color space management by the manufacturer. I don't think they just accidentally printed the wrong flag 😊.
Have you seen Sex Education? There is an episode in season 1 or 2 that mentions it. Go watch if you haven't already! I learned so much from this video. Thank you for educating me. :)
Just passing by to say that the stupid A for Ally thing only works in english. For example asexual is aseksueel in dutch and ally is bondgenoot. So yeah, but problem is that english is the go to language in many places.
I do get your point about Brooklyn 99 but I honestly just laughed about Ginas line and moved on. Thinking back of it it propably was really not okay to put that in but... I guess I'm just not easy to offend. I'll... just go back to my corner, great video, bye!
I've been heavily involved in lgbtq+ stuff for most of my life and I've never seen the gynephilia flag before this, so there's almost no chance that people are going to assume that's the flag you're flying instead of the ace flag. If it's not bright pink I wouldn't stress about it.
I actually identified myself as an asexual before knowing it was the actual word, but that was only the logical conclusion as I was not heterosexual, homoseual nor bisexual "...then I must be... a-sexual?".
Huh, about the flag colors - I always thought it was a warm-ish purple? It's definitely a different shade than the purple in the nonbinary flag wherever I've seen it (hex code of #800080 for the ace flag's purple stripe, #9d59d1 for the nonbinary one). ...and/or I may just have gotten the exact same flag as your first one. Though it was definitely sold as an ace flag.

I’m genuinely confused because I can’t imagine finding a D attractive whatsoever, but I thought most women felt that way, considering how the response to an unsolicited nude pic is met with disgust
I've ordered 3 pride flags and they all had the wrong purple :( Where did you all get your pride flag from?? I'd really like to have one with the darker purple for next year's pride..

Okay, the driving thing in Russia killed me. Like as a trans ace person, I cannot drive in Russia. Good to know if I ever go there! XD
Lmao sameeee 😂
@@kimberlymadrid8507 You underestimate my power! o:
@@kimberlymadrid8507 Now, all I need is car, a driver's licence and a plane ticket for Russia.
I used to watch it with my brother and we stopped 4 episodes into season 3
If I'd kept watching I may well have found my freaking label years ago 💜🤍🖤
Now I need to go back to it. I always planned too I just didn't know if he wanted too or if I should finish it alone. We both found the underwater section just a bit bland and I put it off because of it.
Things I’ve learned today: I can’t legally drive in Russia
I learned the same thing! 🖤⚫⚪💜
That is stupid
My Russian, asexual, 17 year old self:
you guys wouldn’t even believe, what shit can legally happen in Russia 👌
Oof I hated that scene in b99. But I don’t support cop shows anymore anyways 💖
Yeah but they do mention the discrimination black people face from cops when it happened to Terry I guess (don’t remember if that was his name)
Desteny yes but in the end of the day the purpose of cop shows is to show that they are good cops. Not saying everyone has to stop watching cop shows it’s just my take on it
goldenlyre well there are good cops it’s just the systems that’s fucked and the superiority you feel from being a cop as well
@@desteny1393 cops might be good people but the system requires them to be bad.
To those wanting to jump straight to b99 : 6:08
You can have a service animal in America for various disabilities including psychiatric disabilities not just physical and learning disabilities
ooh i didnt know this!
They're often called "emotional support animals" and are used to help with PTSD and such.
But the insult remains an insult regardless.
@@sarahk5412 Emotional support animals (ESAs) are not the same as service animals. While a service animal may also be an ESA, not all ESAs are service animals. Service animals are trained and ESAs are not. Service animals are legally protected since they are trained to be in public to help with functioning tasks, such as grounding during a panic attack or flashback and ESAs are not legally allowed in spaces where pets are not normally since they are not trained.
a service animal for a learning disability? how does that even work?
@@peachstardrop yeah. there is a site that says you can get a service dog for dyslexia. how does that work? dog cannot read.
I think no party here in Spain have mention asexuality and that's so sad. I'm happy that at least one do it in the UK.
I'm from Spain too and it's so sad. Like, I think non-binary identities have only been mentioned by Errejón, but no one has ever mentioned asexuality, aromanticism or pansexuality
last time I was this early I still believed I was allo sexual.
😂
@꧁FreezysAreFlowers꧂
YES.
and a video of him fighting with his toy sword on my channel!! see it please! 😁🙏🏽
@PumpkinsForever
lol, on Ali Express look for "Mini/toy/keychain katana" I think they are 1-2$ each
My dummy brain thought you meant Allo as in the dinosaur allosaurus...
So I'm not at all surprised about the acephobia, though I'm appalled, but I never got far enough in the show to see it.
the ace representation in Bojack almost made me cry, I wasn't even expecting it
it's probably the best representation we got
*when you find out you're not protected by the Equality Act* -._-. ...wut?
Awesome video, Emi! Very informative; I learned a lot! Great to see you back!
I mean, WTF Russia
To the best of my knowledge, I'm the only ace who plays bass in a heavy metal band. I've seen quite a few musicians who are ace, but I'm wondering if there are other aces who play the same music as I do. I wanna start a death metal band with nothing but aces, that'd be so cool! \m/
Anyway, you have a wonderful day and thanks for all that you do!
Interesting addition to the first point: When homosexuality was first "removed" from the DSM it wasn't actually removed, it was just reworded with the added the caveat of "unless the person identifies as homosexual" the exact same as it does with asexuality now. It wasn't until decades later it was officially completely removed, so hopefully that's something to eventually look forward to that there will be an acknowledged distinction between HSDD and asexuality in future editions.
i remember seeing that b99 episode and remember getting knocked on my ass at what gina said. wasn't great.
Finally found an active RUclipsr in the 1% 🥺
Great video! It's really nice to see someone dive deeper into ace topics - discussing things other than 'what is asexuality' or 'how to know ur ace'- it can sometimes be really frustrating if thats the obly kinda ace content I find. So yeah thanks for the vid :3
Such a great video - love the content, well-researched, amazingly presented. Thank you x
Not being able to drive in Russia really grinds my g e a r s
Let's go to Russia and test it
I like the way you think. 🖤🤍💜
Lets do it
I mean watching Russian dashcam videos I don't think I'd survive driving over there, but that definitely surprised me!
I love the show New Girl, but I distinctly remember one specific line where Schmidt says something along the lines of his past self (who was overweight and socially awkward) being an “asexual nerd.”
It's really cool to find another ace youtuber! I didn't know B99 did that and that just kinda sucks. But the Russia one was somewhat amusing
Damn, number 3 is the craziest fact imo. 😄
So then no Russian legally can 😎👉🏽👉🏽
I also can’t drive in Russia 😌
roadtrip time it is then!
if u want a show that represents aces the shadow hunters is a good one! on of the main characters Raphael is an asexual vampire!
“Asexuals cannot legally drive in Russia “
My tired brain: I’m going to go to Russia and drive a caaaaaaar
To be fair when they rent a car or give you a license in Russia do they literally just ask you hey by the way are you asexual I know we got to ask since it's 1% of the world population and all? Yeah Russia is a dick to everybody that is part of the lgbtq community in general because they have a problem with gays as well so don't feel singled out.
Your beautiful embly awesome video iam also asexual and aromantic we are the most left out almost alienated orientation in existence hopefully people like you can change our representation love you embly awesome video
I didn't know about either of the asexual politicians, so it was really cool to find that out!
I just learned what androphilia and gynephilia is, thank you! its super interesting. I've being a bit confused about if im ace or just not a very sexual person for a while, i still don't know, but i keep looking.
dude I live in North Carolina and I had not idea there was an ace polition! People need to be taught this stuff!
I looked up my country anti discrimination laws and yeah asexuals are not covered... thats so wrong. How has this not been a controversy.
I get what you’re saying but at the same time then it becomes the whole straight is the default and while statistically theyr
Oops didn’t get to finish my thought
Anyway statistically there are more straight people but representation does matter. Precisely because as you said we then see misrepresentation I mean I never realized I wasn’t straight till something about asexuality popped up on my tumblr feed and I was kind of like “what are they talking about that’s normal”, and then being like “oh... most people would think the opposite, would think my experience is other.” So it helps other aces who may not know what ace is to be able to see it and go “huh?”
Plus, it would make it so much easier to explain to people what ace is if you could go you know like that character from that one show.
I think more authors should consider writing stories about experiences that aren’t discussed so much because then you almost inherently have a more unique story. You don’t have to worry so much about being cliche if you’re writing a story that nobody’s written yet. At the same time, I’d want these stories written by people who actually care rather than people just slapping an “asexual” label on to whatever character and not bothering to explore that narrative in any meaningful way
Wow! I was shocked when you said that about Brooklyn nine nine. That's now going on my 'Shows to never watch list' as well as House. Thankyou 😂
Ironically, I got a ad for STD medication on this video
Forming a line for the acronym to be ALGIBQTY (pr. Algi Biquity) can be said in one word, involves all the known types and sounds cooler.
If ace is basically 'Not really interested, I feel it should go first. Then there's the "only one interest" followed by the "changable or both" categories then finally the ones that are less about who you like, and more about your own physical body and how you relate to it. And before anyone asks the Y is there cause I needed another 'vowel'. Maybe it stands for Yay?
I prefer to just say L+, it's easy to say and I think more inclusive since no one's arguing that lesbians are the only members of the community
Great video! You’re right, I had no idea about any of these 🙂
Wow I knew none of this except the first, and even then, I forgot the definition change was so recent.
I finally told my psychiatrist I was asexual and she prescribed me an antipsychotic.
the fact that the ace guy got in from nc made me happy because i’m ace (and bi) and from nc
When I see "Things You Didn't Know About..." videos, I always assume that I would now at least two or three of the things on the list. But the title of this one is correct; I didn't know these things.
I do not remember the Brooklyn 99 scene and never watched House but heard about the asexual episode.
As a bi girl, thank you so much for educating me! I'm always looking out for my fellow LGBTQIA+ members, we've got to stick together in this
Thanks Embly for everything you are teaching me
Thanks for this. There's much I don't realize about asexuality and other related topics but I'm learning.
To be fair when it comes to the LGBT thing I don't usually add all of the letters and I'm asexual myself. It's just pure laziness.. I'm guilty.
The Brooklyn 99 thing actually really angered me when i saw it in the show
Love Brooklyn Nine-Nine but same as you was offended by their comment on Asexuality especially being a asexual watching the show.
Bojack Horseman actually introduced me to asexuality. Im not saying that the episode was a great representation but it definitely peaked my interest about the nuances of asexuality.
cheers from Brazil
As an extremely colour-sensitive Ace+ man, the flag thing is so annoying! They need to stop pinkwashing our flag! Agh!
Great informative video thanks emi
As a graphic designer, I think the difference between those two tones of purple on your flags can be written off as lazy color space management by the manufacturer. I don't think they just accidentally printed the wrong flag 😊.
Good explanation. Like Asexuality; many invisible orientation are there. Please promote awareness on those as well. Make_Invisible_Visible
I remember watching b99 and thinking the same thing. It made me sad.
the amount of times i’ve seen shows use asexual as an insult 🤢
30 Rock did that too.
I'm shocked I just found out my pride flag is "wrong" :o
Thanks for telling me. but this made me kinda sad :S gonna buy a new one!
D; The fact that the flags are very similar is very confusing. Maybe they could make the pink a little brighter?? Idk
I'm glad I learned about that before I went and bought an AroAce flag!

Uuummmmm ssooooo like if I am Grey/Demi do I get to like drive a car for a certain amount of time or distance or just a moped? HAHAHAHA
just found about this channel FINALLYYYYYYYYY!!!

No, you just dumb.

If your getting it from amazon, look at the reviews, look for color mentions, find out of its the right color from there.
Wow North Carolina actually did something
