I grew up with the original, and the remake definitely does it justice. I love this game so much. It's approachable for people who don't usually play rpg's, while still being so charming and fun that rpg veterans will still love it!
Your reviews are the only reviews I like watching all the way through nowadays. It's always a plus to see a Switch game reviewed since Switch is the only console I own. Keep up the great work 😉
I hope SE's ace in the pocket will be a flushed-out FF9 with the FF7 Remake Treatment. Vivi is my favorite, and I really love his story arc struggle. My concern would be the cut-off points in FF9... We would likely only get to meet Kuja for it to end and only have gotten to play Stiner, Vivi, Zadiane, and Garnet/Dagger. But I still would drop the 70 bones for it @@PelvicGaming
Oh man, happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with this one! I also legit never noticed the music change when you had a 5+ chain until watching this, that's an awesome find.
SMRPG is one of my all time favorite memories with jrpgs. I'm so happy to hear they did this remake justice. This game's gonna sell me a Switch! Lovely work as always mrs Pelvington! Miss ya!
Yoko Shimomura has made so many classic video game soundtracks. My favourites are Xenoblade Chronicles and Radiant Historia. The latter has such an incredibly underrated score
Xenoblade 1, Radiant Historia, and Suikoden II are by far my favorite RPGs of all time and also some of the best soundtracks of all time. And she did 2 of the 3. Plus so many others. Probably the greatest composer in videogame history.
One thing I love about the postgame is that in a lot of cases, the bosses feel like puzzles you have to solve. Many of them have attack/defense that you literally can’t catch up to (the player’s level cap is a measly LV20), so you need to figure out how to exploit very specific weaknesses. It added an element of strategy and really made me feel badass when I won. Also: I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t played the game, but the true final boss (which was added in the remake) is SO MUCH FUN. If nothing else, the postgame is worthwhile just for that final showdown!
congratulations on the sponsorship and all the love atlus has been giving you lately! glad you liked this game, and i hope you get into more of the mario rpg's. they're all a ton of fun, and i think you'd get a lot out of them. great review as always!
My only mild gripe is that the new music removed a lot of the bass from the boss tracks which I kind of miss. That thump in the originals really gets you going.
I just want to show my appreciation that you FINALLY played this game. This was my childhood introduction into RPGs. (Even though you didn’t play the original, I’ll accept the remake lol). Also same goes for your FFX review which is my favorite Final Fantasy. Those are the 2 games I’ve been most eager to see you review. I’m glad to see you enjoyed them. Btw, out of curiosity I was wondering why you’ve never covered any of the Final Fantasy VII games on your channel. Personally they’re not in my top five but they’re games I’ve been curious to hear your perspective on. For me, the world, and that cyberpunk/ sci-fi aesthetic kind of turns me off. Just wondering if you had similar feelings and had no intentions on playing them or plan to one day. As always keep up the great work!
Whoa!!! Thank you so much, i hope o didn't disappoint! I'm a fan of both games and I'm so happy I got to experience these classics! As for ff7 I'm enjoying other games! Thanks again for the support!
Well I mean it’s EXTREMELY basic “town building” in this case, you just give some amount of random items and you gain a few more items in shops and some auto-receiving items to build up other towns.. now in Suikoden for example, now THAT’S town building 😊
What a great video! Awesome to see you talking about an old classic and a new remake. And you're completely correct about the music. Love what you make!
It may seem straightforward but it had some innovations for RPGs. The timed system when blocking or attacking, the control pad rotations, the hit button repeatedly all based on sound/music notes. Then the FP which is the MP system in the game was SHARED that was interesting that you decided how to measure out your MP through your 3 characters on what needed to be done most damage or healing and not to over spend it on one of those things in a fight. I don't think I found another RPG where they shared the MP pool.
i love the look of this remake SO much it is just the cutest. and hell yeah the dancing level up screen brings me so much joy, i had no clue it wasn't in the original at first!
Great video, I consider myself a SMRPG expert and you’re 100 percent correct the timed hits in this remake are off slightly. It maybe because I played the original on a CRT and this remake on my oled.
i remember screaming my head off seeing the announcement i played the original had a great time and i swear the say i get my copy of this remake i already know im going to have a wonderful time
Me for 20 years: “Mario RPG is my all time favorite game. It’s perfect. Ever heard of it?” “Ehhh maybe? Don’t think I have.” Mario RPG gets a remake, every single person I’ve spoken to about it: “Finally!!! This is one of my favorite games!!!” tf?
Sure, Super Mario RPG isn't as praised as most rpgs from that era of gaming. But it does have a good standing legacy as one of the best Mario spin-offs, and that says a lot. Also, bravo for giving props to FFIX, me favorite FF game. ☺
Such a treat to see your review of this game! I know you typically don't talk spoilers, but I would love to hear your thoughts on these parts of the game, kind of like what you did in your BoF3 review.
I imagine the movement and platforming are a lot better in the remake; I enjoyed the original quite a bit, but platforming in an isometric perspective always causes problems. It usually wasn't too big of an issue, but every now and again, you'll have a segment like those vines or that jumping minigame with the skytroopas at Land's End.
In the original this was the most evil of all hidden block! It was the only missable one in the entire game and pretty hard to get! You had to jump on Toad’s head while he was wakkimg to the throne room the first time you came in and had to perfectly time your jump (to something hidden you had no way of knowing was there in the first place)… the remake added a ledge where the block was moved (plus the accessory that tells you when there is an hidden block) which was the right move to do 😉
Can we talk about how mario is able to walk on air in this game lol and pelvic i was hoping you would talk about smithys theme but can see why that should be experienced first hand
We Brits never got this back in the day. If we had, this would have been my first JRPG, but I never got to play it until this remake came out. And it was . . . alright. I think it was a victim of nearly thirty years of expectations. Not a bad game at all. In fact, very good. But not what I hoped. However, it prompted me to finally play Paper Mario on the Switch Online. And that DID live up to my expectations. Looking forward to that Thousand Year Door remaster.
Something that's lost with the remake is just how innovative this game is. To put in perspective, this is for JRPGs the first game to utilize Timed Hits. Think about how, almost 30 years later, just about any RPG you have is going to have Timed Hits as a mechanic (Sea of Stars since mentioned), and this all tied back to SMRPG being the first game to use the mechanic, and just how well it was implemented as a first time mechanic. Also, this was one of the first games where you could play as Peach or Bowser. I think they may have been available in Mario Kart, but for me, as a teen when I got this game, playing as Bowser was the coolest thing ever.
I never played the original game before. But I have heard good things about it. My first RPG was Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GBA and back than, I didn't know what an RPG was. But I enjoyed the heck out of it that I tried out other RPG'S. From Paper Mario, to Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, etc. So when the Super Mario RPG Remake was announced, I was looking forward to it and see what's so special about it. Wasn't disappointed by the slightest. I had an blast. I prefer something like Paper Mario 64, The Thousand Year Door and few other RPG games more. But I can see why this game is so beloved by many and considereds an classic. It's an great innovation to the Mario RPG universe and the remake make the game is even better thanks to many QOL improvements. Any Mario RPG'S would be an fantastic starting point to those who never played an RPG will filled them right at home. Here's hoping Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remake will get the same treatment as Super Mario RPG remake has.
Its been a while since I finished the remake but I don't think I fully appreciated the amp up in the battle music when you have a chain going. I'm happy you finally got to play smrpg, it's one of my favorites 🤩
Lady P! Did you get to fight Culex, the hidden superboss? I was honestly really surprised SE kept everything exactly the way it was from the OG version. It's definitely a treat if you're an FF4 fan. And if you want a challenge, that's the one to go for.
Loved it the game was blast to play I never played the original and so playing this game was a blast and I can why deep into its roots to the original game and how it inspired the paper Mario and rpg games
Oh wow. I never had the ! thing in the original SNES version so I rarely blocked or timed an attack for maximum damage. Despite the fact that I could never get this timing right the whole game I still beat it.
Great review. The original game was already somewhat easy, its such a shame they decided to make this remake even easier. Because of that, while it is a good remake, it isnt definitive for me as I like having some bit of a challenge.
While the MAIN game is EASIER then the SNES game the POST game bosses theirs at least 2 of them which can do 9999 damage to the entire party in a Game that STILL only has 30 exp lvs and ONLY a MAX HP count of 255.

So exciting!
Mario RPG is the reason I still press the attack button in sequence with the actual attack with every rpg game now.

They're neck in neck for me. I'm not even upset about it because I remember a time when people made fun of FF9. The fools.
I had to rewatch that bit thinking my video had skipped haha.

Happy birthday/anniversary.
wow
And we're still not done with it. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remake hype. Baby!
That is great. It means the time where we "need" to upgrade our hardware every year is finally over.

Is there any answer to why she is going with the Lady Pelvic? Is Pelvic some protagonist of some game? Why is that her name? 😂
