They knew from the start it was a fad
They made more money with smaller yearly release and burning the license rather than developing it more and letting it stagnate, just look at what happened with starlink, even at 5$ you can still find it rotting on shelves years later
I wouldn't be surprised if Activision oversaturated the market of toys to life on purpose to just make sure other can't profit from it, especially disney who would have printed money if infinity kept going

I LOVED Skylanders and have all six of the main games in the series and still own several Skylanders for each game. With that said, if the series had gone one more year I would have had to stop since my wallet couldn't handle it anymore. Activision got SUPER greedy starting with the fourth game (Trap Team). The first three games were reasonably priced. Starting with the fourth game, they started getting absurdly greedy with all the multiple trap accessories and the such. It got far worse with the fifth game (Super Chargers) with those trophies. I didn't mind the vehicles (they were pricey, but most were cool) but the multiple trophies were an issue. The sixth and final game (Imaginators) got really greedy with those crystals.
At that point I was like "My wallet can't handle this anymore!!"
I would have skipped the seventh game if they had released a seventh game in the main series because of the greed from Activision.
The series would have been better off without the multiple traps, trophies and crystals (I don't mind just ONE trap, ONE trophy and ONE crystal, but not multiples of them, that's insane and just greedy) and the yearly release schedule was a bit much after a while. They would have benefited from a year off.
      Then again,
They had to do the yearly release thing when Disney stepped in and directly challenged them with Disney Infinity. Taking time off under that scenario wasn't an option. Granted, having yearly Skylanders and yearly Disney Infinity burned out everyone's wallets, resulting in both series hitting the wall since most people couldn't afford them anymore after a certain point. Throw in Nintendo's Amibo and Lego Dimensions (and Lego went pretty hard with throwing their stuff out there like crazy in such a short time span for Lego Dimensions) and they added on to the wallet burn. By the time Starlink showed up, most people's wallets were burned out, resulting in Starlink sitting on the shelf (despite it being a really fun game and the Nintendo Switch version even having Star Fox in it)

I only tried Skylanders for a couple of hours at a friends house back in the day, but I worked at GameStop for the entire lifespan of the series. It was crazy how popular the first two games were. Especially when compared to everything that came after. I even had adults looking for specific Skylander figures for themselves, not just for their kids. I'd say the third title halved the series' popularity at the GameStop I was working at, and the following titles had far more shelf space than demand. I can see why they were phased out, but also it seems like a series that went too hard too fast and burnt all the good will that it got with the first title.
I hope something like Skylanders comes along and blows people away again. It was a really fun time to work at GameStop.

    as someone who grew up with these games, I know exactly why it died;
-the general audience grew older and didn't care much for the series after a few years (like me)
-too many figurines after a while causing the older fans to go "i have enough characters, I dont need anymore"
-the games themselves got worse after each release (the vicarious visions games were boring. They made the levels longer with less variety)
-the art direction took a complete nosedive in originality (imaginations could easily be mixed up with league of legends or something)
-confusion as to which characters worked on which games would cause confusion towards potential customers
-the series mostly sold on nintendo systems as thats where the main target audience was, and when the wiiu failed and the wii versions were terrible ports of those games, it put a big hole in sales. Also which superchargers released a year after mario kart 8 and was basically seen as competition towards it...
-superchargers tried to mix vehicle sections with the main gameplay of the older games and both fell short of expectations on both, almost no enemies or anything to do on the main path and the vehicle sections felt hollow and purposeless (sea vehicles had the worst hand)
-A yearly release like this works for adult related games like Call of Duty because the audience already has a much wider age range in comparison (16 - 45-ish) while these games general age rating would be (8-12). a MUCH smaller gap would cause older players to be less interested sooner and when its strictly the older players from the start carrying the sales, the idea of a yearly release is basically doomed from the start
TLDR: the games got worse over time, the audience got older, and the wiiu being a failure didnt help things much

We were able to find a funny infinite coin glitch w the treasure chest item (made every hit give gold) and using it at the home base w the training dummy. But still after those first 3 games most the fanbase was exhausted w the games and toys fast release schedules. They probably shouldve released toys throughout the yr to keep interest and make the games on a 2 or 3 yr cycle

Skylanders was the best game series I played as a kid! It was my childhood throughout my life! I did also play Disney Infinity as well, but it wasn’t my interest. Frankly I love all six Skylanders games because of their unique gimmicks! Sure, now that Toys for Bob has gone indie, and so much time has passed, I still enjoy Skylanders to this day!

@@michaelhenar okay, I will. Just let you know, it’s gonna be long, but here I go. My spinoff will start like this
      I call it: *Skylanders Eclipse*
It’s a spinoff game that *solely* focuses on the dark and light elements. Why? Let’s rewind a little bit, ever since the two new elements were introduced in Trap Team, then to Superchargers and Imaginators, they overall have the *LEAST* amount of Skylanders! So, not only will my spinoff revive the franchise, but it will also give the dark and light elements more love and the recognition they need! The roster will be 32 (similar to the SSA roster, but also includes the “gimmick”landers) 16 each for the elements and will consist of:
      Eight core Skylanders
      One Giant
Two Swap Force (new swap abilities will be Gravitate and Rhythm)
      One Trap Master
      One Supercharger
      Two Minis
One Sensei (Light Bazooker and Dark Quickshot)
The main villainess is: *Empress Eclipta!* she was once a standard drow witch, who once served under Kaos! However, as Kaos failed to take over Skylands (as always), Eclipta would leave off to create her own evil plan. That was when she stumbled upon a spell book that contains “eclipse magic”. First she started mastering solar magic, then lunar magic. After all her training, she started her plan: which is amalgamating the sun and moon together, in creating a total annular eclipse so powerful, it’ll *eradicate* all Skylands!
So, the plot is trying to stop Empress Eclipta from using the sun and moon for her evil intentions!
Anyway, I am also bringing back the PVP Battle mode, heroic challenges, swap zones (gravitate and rhythm) raceway tracks for Sea and Sky (excluding Land, because it only has Fire, Tech, Earth and Undead), basically *everything* from the last six Skylanders installments, but put in a dark and light standalone game!
Lastly, Knight Light, Knight Mare, Spotlight, Blackout, Astroblast, Nightfall, Starcast, Aurora, Hood Sickle, and Blaster Tron will all be playable in the game as well!
So, what do you think? Please be honest

    • @dominicormiston2755
      @dominicormiston2755 2 месяца назад

@@crislunaverellen6563My idea for a new game title would be "Skylanders, Path To Forever" where most of the original and/or famous lightcore skylanders from spyros adventure to trap team are now majestic adults back to protect skylands from an old forgotten boss; The hydra, but now with every head for each element. Each hydra head starts out leaving the main body (splitting) and creating their own along with an army in order to individually gather the most concentrated source of each element. When achieved they will fuse back into hydra form and become unstoppable. The skylanders have to prevent them from doing this by protecting these great sources of power from onslaughts of their elemental abominations. Every concentrated source of each element is locked away in a garrison that is currently under seige by the elemental army which is a counter offensive to the defensive element (fire defenders vs water attackers). The heros will have to clear hordes of monsters that are passing through gates and breaching walls before confronting the dragon with varying degrees of success and failure. The name of the title is meant to infer that unlike our world, Skylands is meant to stay unchanged as the indefinite paradise, but the hydra wants their universe's resources to become just as limited as ours for its own personal gain because it has insatiable hunger for the essence of every element.

Rather than biding their time and generating slow but sustainatable growth, they explode at every new opportunity until they run out of steam, making big investments with the hopes of making big investments that, while exciting in the short-term, don't provide staying power when even one investment fails.

Nevertheless, future projects within the Skylanders universe were limited to the recent mobile game titled Ring of Heroes until its closure in 2022. I remember getting him the new game every year for a while.
From where I saw, it died at Skylanders: Superchargers, because bolting on a racing game to the main game was just too far to go, and it didn't help that the racer that came with the game was woefully underpowered and (of course) to get a decent one you'd have to buy it separately. By the time Imaginators came out the year after that, he'd already burned out on Superchargers.
Each new game had new gimmicks and stuff to buy, but the gimmicks got worse and worse, until the kids just checked out.

Crazy thing is that I see so much potential with this. They could just do an open world game where you are litterly required to have a specific skylander or type of skylander to continue in certain parts but still being able to play other stuff in general.

Writer here! Surprisingly, they weren't an inspiration for skylanders (that I saw at least). But I admittedly should've noted their existence with at least a quick "while they weren't the first to do this, as UB Funkeys did, Skylanders was the first mainstream example of the genre" or something. Valid point though

Man, I miss these games. My two aces (and my rarest) were Ninjini and Enchanted Lightcore Star Strike. I have such fond memories of these games, and was sad to watch them fade away. I started with Giants, and slowly acquired all the games and most of the figures. To add salt to the wound, my local Walmart still had the sign for Skylanders up in in electronics for years afterward. A Silent Monument, if you will. I knew why they had faded out, but it still left a hole in my soul for gaming that has never quite been filled again. In a large part, this game series was responsible for my childhood.

Me and a group of kids at school had formed an impromptu skylanders club, where we would share and trade the figures. Between the 4 of us, we had nearly every character, which made getting through certain areas a lot easier.
I honestly hope the genre can make a comeback, but any attempt would eventually turn into a soulless cash grab.

Toys to life crap shouldve stuck around, then NFTs maybe wouldnt be so prevalent. NFT's are essentially toys to life but done worse. As I recall, NFT's were SUPPOSED to be assets you could buy that you could use in other games. That idea failed miserably. Toys to life games like skylanders or nintendo games that used Amiibo, were exactly that, NFT games before we called them NFT's. And they were NFTs done right. A notable example is Webkins, a toys to life mmo game for kids.

    • @AccurateDiscoFever45

Also, NFTs are way too expensive. At least with Skylanders, you don't need to sell a kidney to be able to afford just one.

This is why Pokemon works. Main series games only come out every few years, each game adds a bit more, and you don't need extra content. You might need two copies of the game to trade between but that's still better.

tbh this whole concept sounds amazing for a live service game, i mean imagine you get real life figurines not just digital goods and can use them in an ever expanding game, if they made an MMO and Activision does have experience with that, this could have been an amazing businuess opportunity, i mean even if they dont do an MMO with it, just multiplayer compatibility with general new content that comes over time would prb have worked better then releasing it as a series, obviously that was different at the time but nowadays this would work really good and the whole toy to life aspect wouldnt be that bad since the game itself gets bigger over time so you never lose out on the old figurines

At first as a kid, I was a bit scepticle about Skylanders, It was cool yeah, but my mind was like “so many figures to collect 🙄”. And I’m glad I waited. Because later Skylanders Giants dropped and the design and concept of those made me ask it for Christmas. It was a really easy toy to ask for my birthday as well. Cse people could just buy a figure pack from Skylanders in the store as a gift that was affordable.
I already prepared my mind, to not go for all Skylanders as that would be hard as a kid and expensive.
I still had a blast with it tho. Was one of my top tier Wii games in my past that I played and arguably the best Skylanders game.
My brother wanted the new Skylanders (swap force) later, so he got it. And I was not a fan. The levels took waaaay too long. I could say “Imma play a Skylanders level real quick before I have to leave too …”. The previous Skylanders levels where the perfect length in my opinion. They wheren’t too short where you’d breeze through them. But not too long as well. With some levels having even me saying “whew finally over”. (And I’m a patient person.)
So yeahI loved Skylanders for giants. And that was it, the rest never got me interested again. (Only trap team for a bit, but never got it.)
Disney infinity 3.0 rolled around tho, and it had Star Wars. I as a Star Wars fan went out to collect all infinity Star Wars stuf. And got it all so, that waste end of my toys to life gaming.😂

I thought he was the coolest. I also have really fond memories of Infinity because my friend (different to the one who had Skylanders) had a lot of the figures, and I remember we'd usually goof around in the hub world with the weird dark cloudy thing that would chase you if you got too close, or we'd just go to that one farming world and just farm for hours. As a kid I played the standard game (a lot) and bought a new figure as soon as I had saved up enough money to do so (my brother bought a similar amount).
I played Giants but my brother was the only one of us to actually buy new figures (he never completed Giants).
I played halfway through the third game (I forget the English name as in the Netherlands it was called Swap Force). My brother never touched it and neither of us bothered to buy any toys.
After that neither of us really cared much about other sequels but were mildly curious when a few weeks ago we saw the art for the fiery samurai lady on a piece of decoration in a toy store we visited to mostly just have a laugh (we were both surprised Skylanders still existed).

It also died some Years ago. You still can play it, but without the Toys, you miss something there.
