Hi. Stu is in denial; It's the Genoa track!😂😮😂. Trust me; a 50 year old boat, the caulking under the teak strip is all dried out. Some of the bolts will be a pain to remove but do it now while the boat is ripped apart. Create good access to all the bolts - they are going to leak in the future! Get big fender washers and bed the bolts with Butyl putty. With two of you on it it will go pretty fast and it'll be good for 20 years. Go for it!
You need to use a quality brush rather than a roller to get a proper finish with varnish.. you sharing your journey with us is greatly appreciated and highly entertaining along with providing some knowledge.. Marina your videos have dramatically improved. Can't wait to see the wonderful videos you're able to create once you & Stewart are out sailing!!!
It's such a joy to see Marina's intros, presentation and attitude to what is a difficult and time-consuming refit job on Seabird. With Stu's growing technical skills you two make a dynamic team making us all impatient for the next instalment. I think the coming summer will see Seabird's refit rushing towards completion, well done guys.
Both sides of the track definitely needs to be removed so that you can inspect the area and replace the teak under the tracks.. Stew definitely has a great idea for putting a drain tube in..Seabird is going to be such an amazing boat and home when done!!!
The old bird is evolving nicely your work ethic and perseverance is making her a new bird better than when she was new. Great episode stay safe, stay dry, stay warm until next time ☮️ out.
I am totally amazed at the progress you two have done. I saw your boat when you purchased it and thought OMG... good luck! But WOW you have really come a long way, looking forward to seeing you splash her!! Keep up the good work!
C’est drôle comme vous êtes différente quand Stewart n’est pas là. Vous vous hâtez moins . Vous faites plus attention à votre environnement avant de commencer quoi que ce soit. En tout cas un grand bravo et un grand merci pour cette vidéo.
Marinna, such a lovely episode, your head will be amazing. Stu, nice to have you back from retaining the engine gear. Your engine bed looks superb, nice job on gluing, just marvelous work.
Hello Team Seabird. Love Marina's approach to sorting out stuff, girls touch 😂. Seabird looks lovely after the tidy up. Well done to you both. You are getting closer to moving home. ❤❤❤
Maybe put a drop of red ink in the genoa track holes and see if that end up inside. That'll be your proof, Marina. Otherwise, good job on the engine mounts. Looking great. As ALL your jobs do! Cheers!
Roll and tip is how to get it smooth as glass. You should roll the varnish for even coverage, then tip it with a brush lightly with long even strokes from one side to the other.
Prep raw timber with 240 grit, sand base coat with 320, 400 for top coats on varnish. From an old French polisher who has worked on Luxury yachts 🙂, (you can also use wood grain filler after prepping if u want that glass type finish Miranda was talking about but i would advise against it - Too slippery)
Marina a little tip, between varnish coats yes you use 320G to lightly sand but just before the next coat of varnish sand lightly with 400G water paper(dry, no water) the result is a super smooth job❤
The wood you varnished looked like some variant of mahogany. Mahogany takes a LOT of coats of varnish to fill the grain. If you want a perfect finish, put on 10 coats or so. It will get a bit smoother with each coat.
Re your dowels - there is a reason for the flutes that you showed on the first piece - they allow air to escape and glue to fill the voids as you are inserting the dowels. Straight dowel tends to squeeze the adhesive ahead of itself when being tapped into the hole which can create an airlock preventing the dowel from bottoming out, the flutes also ensure that the adhesive completely coats the sidewalls of the hole which ensures a waterproof seal.
wow the boat looks amazing - i can so relate to your jobs as i am sanding, varnishing and then priming all the wood work on our narrowboat fit out - its too cold in the uk to do it on the boat so we have to measure, cut and dry fit and then take it home to varnish and prime - great work 👍
close & seal all your windows/hatches. pour a bucket of water & a bottle of mouthwash around your stanchion bases. if it smells minty fresh inside, you know where your leak is.
you two is doing a great job again, and i have watch your videos from the start when you startet on the boat and i was afraid that the work would be to much bcs it was not so fine at start but you two have done a amazing work at the boat and it will be very nice when its finish. hope i will see it when its finish and getting on the water..
In Stuart's defence you both left me for two weeks. Lol. I can cope for a week, but two has been unbearable. I think I have problem, yes a vicarious one, but a problem non the less.
Love your videos and be sure no pressure from me on the progress, your doing just fine at your own pace. Toe Rail; I'm no expert, in fact you are much more than me, but I would say to tape and check for continued leaks is a good plan. If the leak persists remove the Toe rail and re-fiberglass both sides to prevent leak and rot you wont see until the damage is done. Just the age of the boat and how long it has been neglected means much more has happened and you want to do your best to address issues now rather than later if you can. Every time I watch you and others do Fillets for Fiberglass I always wonder why people don't use a silicone spatula with a round edge. Another thing would be mixing in a plastic bottle with the top cut off and placing a cake icing bag inside it and adding the Epoxy Filler as an applicator like you would do with decorating a cake. It may help with making more precise placement and not as messy requiring cleanup sanding later. Who knows I have seen others do it and it seemed easier to me. Love all you both do stay strong and stay together.
As you walk thru and are filming it is great to see all the areas you have completed and looking good. Lotsa memories from the previous episodes to see there. I just love the Can Do attitude from both of you. Keep on keepin on and soon will be sailing again. Cheers from BC Canada. :)
@@SailingSeabird keeping very well, just doing some re-wiring on le bateau, and installing new water tanks (solid ones, I hate the fucking flexi bags). I'm aiming to depart from here in 2 weeks (15th), should be at either navy or napoleon around the 23rd, but I'll be taking off pretty much the day after to go back home for Roxane's birthday and to pick up the car. So here's hoping that trip down on a single old cranky engine goes ok :D
He left you again? Bloody skiver. That counter top with the sink and tap looks great, if you warm the varnish up before you put it on it'll spread and even itself out better, also if you gently run a brush over after you've rolled it, that'll make it look nice and smooth.
Those engine beds are looking great - you have absolutely no reason to doubt your work on this job or to worry about how sturdy they’ll be when they’re done. Nice job all ‘round both of you.
Hi I have a OE32 1979 and when I bought it there was about 40 leaks in the deck and I current with sigaflex 710 and now 3 years later is completely dry😀 Keep up the good work!,
I don't know what you guys use for drop cloths, but a good and cheap item is freezer paper. It is (here in the USA) a heavy weight paper with an impervious coating on one side. So paints, solvents, etc won't seep through. Can be rolled up and burned when done. Easy Peasy. 👍🏻
@SailingSeabird It is used to wrap meat. Normally found along side the cling wrap and such at the supermarket. You can find it (here) in 24" rolls and is cheap. At least here it is easy to find and cheap. I love how you go slow on the boat. Too many channels want to get a project done so they can have a complete story each week. And then have problems. Keep up the great work guys.🍻
I absolutely love the tour of the boat. This is actually looking more like a sailboat not just a nondescript construction site. The video tour reveals so much progress for you to be very happy about.
That leak can be a doozy. Check if there is a flange between the hull and deck and how it is sealed. I had very similar problems at some stage in my boat efforts.
When you want your vernish flat whitour structure , you can use epoxy the for the first layer , a verry thick layer , sanding and epifanes last 2 layers . You can also use 2 comp , polyurethane vernish whith fast hardener and make 5 thick layers in one day , sanding and than your epifanes last thin layer 2 times .
Stu listen to the Mrs a fix the leak. Remember happy wife happy life 😎 Can you just put a soundproof box over the engine like Salt and Tar has on their boat. This would make fantastic access to it and make the boat more open plan and feel more spacious
We plan to get on with leak hunting this week. As for the engine, we have an engine room, not just a compartment. We do plan on adding some soundproofing. Cheers for watching 🙂
Looking better all the time. I noticed that the through hull pipe only had one jubilee clip onto the skin fitting. I thought I read somewhere that (belt and braces) it's best to have two?
Thanks for another great video. During the next few months I'll be learning all of the skills Marina has learnt myself, so I'm looking forward to that. Perhaps I could ask you a few pointers, Marina, on your journey with using tools correctly and working with wood and epoxy etc. Anyway, the both of you are a great inspiration. Have a great week! Watching from sunny Queensland, Australia, as usual. :)

Just sailed to the boatyard and will share the “enjoyment “ of boat maintenance concurrently with you!😊

I’m sure Marina will the argument with the track. Stu will just be short in denial 😂😂
Marinna, such a lovely episode, your head will be amazing. Stu, nice to have you back from retaining the engine gear. Your engine bed looks superb, nice job on gluing, just marvelous work.
Thank you for the encouragement.
Step by step.

Tack!
Gearbox is a big move forward. She's looking good.
Still a lot to do.
Strip down the gearbox and rebuild it...
But it's a start.

lol I love it when you say pooptank, it sounds cute with your accent
Thanks Greg
Hope you're keeping well.

Good job folks, greetings from South Florida usa. Let's go sailing.
Looking more like home! You need a catchy phrase that you end the videos with - something meaningful, encouraging ... a lot of channels use one ;-)
Roll and tip is how to get it smooth as glass. You should roll the varnish for even coverage, then tip it with a brush lightly with long even strokes from one side to the other.
You guys are doing such a great job. I can't wait for your maiden journey... It's going to be incredible 😊
Us too!
One day.

@SailingSeabird thoroughly enjoy it ...Thank you
Begining to look really sharp now 👍👍👍👍👍
Slowly slowly 🐌

So much progress! It's really coming together and you should both be proud of what you have achieved. Hope you have a good weekend. Richard (UK)
I do like the two of you together. But we all need a break from each other. Individually or together you two are a great team.
Oh, yes. You guys are looking great! Inspiring!!! ❤️😎🥰🤗❤️😎🥰🤗
Hello, Stu, I must say I have to agree with Marina. If I had a boat I would want to fix ALL the leaks. Just my opinion. Ciao. geo
I think I like it Stu, low friction ring for the headsail sheet.

So are we.
Trying to return the boat to its rightful place.
A busy week planned, it's sunny.

At this stage it makes sense to do the Genoa tracks. Also I get the resistance to starting a job like that.
But it needs to be done. You can do it.
Marina a little tip, between varnish coats yes you use 320G to lightly sand but just before the next coat of varnish sand lightly with 400G water paper(dry, no water) the result is a super smooth job❤

Good luck with the varnishing.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Another coat and then thereafter a last one a bit more thinned......it will be smooth as a babyskin.....great work!!
close & seal all your windows/hatches. pour a bucket of water & a bottle of mouthwash around your stanchion bases. if it smells minty fresh inside, you know where your leak is.
Try Roll and Tip for varnish 😊
I have the Makita drill and driver set. I find that the driver breaks screws more often than the drill. The drill is heavier, but has more control
It’s starting to look more like a home Marina! 👍🏻😁
Great paint job
And
Engine base build
Could you put dye in some water then tip it down the holes. Then change dye colour and put it round your repair to check that?
you two is doing a great job again, and i have watch your videos from the start when you startet on the boat and i was afraid that the work would be to much bcs it was not so fine at start but you two have done a amazing work at the boat and it will be very nice when its finish. hope i will see it when its finish and getting on the water..
It's definitely nice to have water leaks sealed up, the floor, and bathroom almost done, and much of the interior painted. I'm curious what's next
Steady as she goes.... good work.
In Stuart's defence you both left me for two weeks. Lol. I can cope for a week, but two has been unbearable. I think I have problem, yes a vicarious one, but a problem non the less.
Great jobs guys she is beginning to look like a boat again 🙂
Great progress
there is only one word to describe you 2 ..Masterful
Marina you did a great job on her own! Nice to see the engine mounts almost complete! Keep on moving forward! Cheers D
Great bathroom
This videos totally makes you the most skilled utube boat chick
I can't believe how fast you two get things done. Cheers to Simon from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Good to catch those leaks while you can do something about it
That's the plan.
We'll find them. It's a fun game.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Looks like it's coming together, keep up the good work, always enjoy your videos.
Thanks 👍
Slowly getting there.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Marina is a keeper!
I wonder if you could inject a high contrast type dye into those holes on the Genoa track. If the dye shows up on the inside then there you go.
The food dye trick.
I forgot about that one.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Hola from Creuse 😉 Didn't see you before leaving (before the thunder) but you probably have the card. Nice very meticulous job.
Beautiful workmanship Amiga ❤😂🎉
Dang, you will have the nicest engine bed on the Med at this rate! :D
It's some nice wood.
Hope you're keeping well.
Looking forward to your return.

You should use a brush for varnishing so you can get a smooth finish.using a light stroke.
Those engine beds are looking great - you have absolutely no reason to doubt your work on this job or to worry about how sturdy they’ll be when they’re done. Nice job all ‘round both of you.
You can smooth out 'roller finish' with a brush. It's quick because you're not applying the coating, just brushing down the roller 'bumps'...
The classic "roll and tip"
Thank you for the advice.
