I bought my Camaro about 3 years ago. It’s a 2016 2SS and I’ve always had problems with the starter. I was scared to drive the car because it wouldn’t start if I had to turn the car off and on a couple times. I’ve replaced my starter once and my battery 3-4 times. Glad something is happening about this

Yes 2016 2SS has the hot start problem. It happens anytime I drive the car and it gets hot. I replaced the battery twice thinking that was the problem. Slow crank but always starts. Super embarrassing to have this happen in front of people!!!

Greatest news I've heard in a while. I've personally taken my 2016 2SS twice. They replaced the battery once, and the starter the 2nd time. Worked great after starter was replaced, but now it's slowly going back to it's old ways. Struggling to turn moments after turning it off. If it was my daily driver I wouldn't be surprised if I had to take it even more times.
For me, hot or not hot days, it doesn't really matter. Literally just any time I drive it for more than 20 minutes and the engine is a little hot. I've tried to turn it back on seconds after turning it off because I parked wrong, or accidentally stalled while parking or whatever, and the engine turns slowly almost like it doesn't want to turn back on. So annoying. They need to do some sort of recall and fix it. Can't be changing the starter every year.

I have a 2016 SS and I've had this issue. In 2018 the car started having issues with a slow crank that eventually drained the battery so many times it had to be replaced. It left me stranded once. After replacing the battery the hard starting issue seemed to improve slightly but soon started having issues again. This was before long tube headers were installed. The hard slow cranking issue progressively got worse. It happened after driving, even if only a few miles/minutes. I had to get a jump start a few times. After the headers were installed in 2019 it didn't seem to make it worse but the issue persisted. Still dealing with hard slow cranks after driving, draining the battery. I finally realized that the starter was getting heat soaked. I'd have to sit with the hood open for 20-60 minutes to allow the starter to cool and many times still required a jump start. If I was able to get the car to start, the entire dash would light up like a Christmas tree and the car would go into limp mode. I'd have to just let the car cool completely off before trying to drive again. In 2020 I had to replace the starter. So far there have been no more issues but I'm sure it will eventually return. I know at least two others who've had the same issue. One is a 2016 SS and the other is a 5th gen Z28. All three of us live in Houston.

Omg finally I’ve had so many issues with my starter. Once it was 100 outside and I was driving on a road trip about 1 hour on the highway I stopped at a gas station and my 2016 SS 6.2 8V wouldn’t turn back over. After about the third time pushing the start button the car started smoking from the engine. Took it to Chevy and they replaced the starter and battery. Thanks for sharing lethal, love your videos.

Kaelinator 8-speed auto transmissions have wrong fluid. Causes it to shake or shudder as if running over rumble strips. I had it but my dealer swapped out the fluid to the correct one and fixed it. It’s been over a year and I haven’t had a problem since.

Wanted to input my 2 cents. I have a 2016 v6 m6. I bought it used with about 50k miles a year ago. Put about the average amount of miles on it. I’ve always had it as a consistent thing. When it’s really bad, it like chugs to start. Like it wants to turn over but takes a few seconds for the first 2-3 turn overs then it cranks up. Then other times it doesn’t do it.

I had real slow starting when my 2016 SS was hot so I removed all the battery terminals and grounds in the trunk and cleaned them up with wet and dry sandpaper. Also did the ground terminal near the fuse box under the hood and the main power feed. Starts great now when hot but I'm still going to get a heat shield for the starter. The hot start problem was at its worse when you stopped for about 5 minutes then started again.

Should be noted that I've been a night owl for the past decade so ive also avoid a lot of the heat of the day as well as go to more lengths than most to find shaded parking when in the heat. None of which were nessasarily to avoid heat soak, just figured I'd note my driving habits for what it's worth. Perhaps the heat extractor on the 2019+ refresh helps a bit of the issue? Thanks for the info. Please consider a tripod for your camera as you were shaking it while filming. A heavier grounding wire will not fix a heat problem. It may help a little and not re create the issue which makes it seem the problem is fixed. However, if the starter is too close to the header or engine like mine - a 2012 SS Hennessey HPE 650, it will cause all sorts of reliability issues. I just replaced the battery and starter again which equals about one starter and battery every two years and I only drive it about 2000 miles per year. It's ridiculous and I'm glad this recall came to my attention because the issue has left me stranded several times needing a tow and costing money unnecessarily and making me not want to drive the car.

Oh how I am WAY too familiar with this issue!! Mine started in May 2018, 3 months after buying my 2016 SS. At that point it was still under warranty. I'm on, I believe, my 6th battery now, new starter, new alternator, starter heat shield added, new bcm's in passenger door, now drivers side is going out... "no parasitic drain", additional grounds added, cleaned grounding points as well. Dealerships have ruined my trunk liner now from just bending it out of the way to work on the battery/ testing. My car has been out of use for more than 6 months total now. Still having SUPER slow starts, index window messages, service stabilitrak messages and currently at tier one resolution team with GM... Many of the attempted repairs I've had to pay out of pocket/copay on service contract as well.

I have a 2010 Camaro ss.The only time my starter never had issues was on a cold start. Would crank right over, but as soon as the Camaro ran for 10 minutes getting heat on engine and then you shut it off, it was impossible to crank over again. Starter sounded really exhuasted and would take around 10 seconds for Camaro to crank over. Sometimes I had to wait for it to cool down before it would start. I never had issues until I upgraded to long tube headers. It's a pain in the ass to remove the long tube header to get to the starter to replace it as well. I bought a powermaster starter hoping it would fix the problem and it wouldn't even fit with my American Racing Headers company long tube headers. I had to buy another stock GM starter. Hopefully they resolve this issue soon. I have a bunch of new parts ready to be installed and need to pull engine soon. It would be nice to address issue while rebuilding my car.

I just had that problem a few days ago when it was like 115 degrees. I been having it for a long time. I replace the battery a few times thinking it was that. It has always had a slow start issue. Specially after track days and long stops at the gas station. I have after market headers and it gets really hot under the hood. That is why I wanted to upgraded my headers to 2 inch and ceramic coat them to keep the heat down but the pandemic hit. That explains a lot. I even took it to the dealer before I did all the upgrades with Cunningham for starting issue.

Hi ... vanessa here. I have reported the issue to my Hendrick dealership since day one after track use and actually standing still keeping the engine running for photographs. It’s a slow crank which sounds like a dying cat. There was only one time where the car did not actually start. I got a new battery under warranty at the time. After three years the Hendrick dealership finally saw the fake code thrown stability track and heard the slow crank. They told me they felt it was a soaked starter. They gave me quite a discount but I did pay for labor. I bought my own special heat shield to wrap it. That was October 2019. I was taking photographs last week it was 80° and I kept the car running and then when I would turn it off and restart it was a very slow crank. So I can tell you this will continue to be an issue on my stock LT1 engine the only modification is a Roto Fab. Other forums talked about throwing fake codes when I researched this over a year ago. The technician was able to clear the code and realized it had nothing to do with stability track.

This is the cause. I would frequently make drives I with a lot of stops in it. Car wouldn’t start after or take like 5 cranks. Dealer has replaced starter 3 times in 6 months. Starter just gets too hot and struggles to start up. Notice how fast your car turns on, on a cold start vs a warm start. Mine would be like 1 crank cold vs 3-5 warm.

  • @mattwilson5853
    @mattwilson5853 3 года назад

This issue is real on my Gen6 2017 2SS. The starter getting heat soaked caused the battery to die early. Chevy Roadside towed me to a dealer. I told the dealer about this being a common problem and the class action lawsuit which was filed. They pretty much blew it off and sent me away with a $300 battery change. They said they couldn’t drive the car 30 minutes to get it hot to duplicate the problem and that idling it on the lot wouldn’t get it to fail. I have not tried the extra/improved starter ground yet. This problem has gradually gotten worse over time and even the new battery now struggles to turn the car over when it’s hot. This makes driving it daily very tricky to minimize stops in the Florida heat when out and about not wanting to get stranded.

I have a 2012 45th Anniversary 2SS Hennessey 650 HPE Camaro and since day one have had many electrical issues. I have been stranded several times: in another state, close to home and at home. I do generally drive it hard... it’s in my DNA. I had to replace the starter in July 2020. Prior to involving another mechanic, I diagnosed it to the starter and was in the middle of moving so decided to send it to a fellow mechanic. He confirmed it was the starter. It makes a lot of sense that any after market work involving the exhaust or super charging will cause this issue. I’ve heard people who’ve done no after market work, strictly GM OEM, and have had zero issues. So it seems GM may be okay in defending this suit due to the original engineering being sound, however borderline. JMHO. Thank you as usual for another very good video!

2017 i4 convertible Camaro owner, and I replaced my battery, and I still get stranded even when the car has sat for over an hour. I press the start button, and all I get are clicks. So I started carrying a jump pack, and trickle charge my battery while I don't drive it. Well, the starter has gotten so bad I have to connect 2 jump packs (one in trunk, one under the hood) to get it started, so I'm taking it in to get the starter replaced. This car only has 29K on it, and this is the second GM known problem (had to buy upgraded transmission fluid due to shudder, another GM known flaw that effected my car since it was built in 2016).

Also, it's only the 2 liter turbo, 4 Cyl. w/275 horsies....still fun but I don't race it of course...my husband was the racer. Also, I only have 22 K on it after owning it since 2016. I have / had this problem. I added the beefy ground wire and that worked but it came back. I got new battery and that fixed it but it came back. I got a new starter and that fixed it but it came back. I added a wrap to shield the heat and that didn’t work. I removed the rain guards from the hood vents to let the heat out and that helped but didn’t cure it. If you charge you battery often the battery can overcome the heat soak easily. Because the alternator is “smart” it doesn’t keep the battery topped off. I trickle charge mine 1-2 times per week, pop the hood when I can, added the extra ground, removed rain guards from hood vents and I can keep the issue under control.
2016 Camaro SS, stock exhaust up to the rear axle, COA, ported tb
This happens whenever it his mid 90s and up. I can reproduce it. The majic number is 12 mins. If I run hard or even drive normal on a hot day, then turn the car off and wait 12 mins it will start slow.

2017 V6 here, from the great state of Texas 😎 owning the car since April 2018 and never had similar problems, but I'm definitely going to give a look at the location and proximity with the other components just out of curiosity. One thing happened last week though, I had been idling in parking for probably over an hour, having lunch and some chatter with the girl between university classes and the AC started blowing warm air. I turned it off and kept it off for a while but it did not want to work for the whole trip back home. The day after, when I jumped in the car in the morning, everything was back to normal. Any idea as per why that happened? It was a pretty hot day, I'm sure we were close to 100F
