Pt 8: AT Hike to Roan High Knob Shelter plus History Around
This was a three mile morning hike to Roan High Know Shelter the highest shelter in the AT at over 6,000 feet elevation. This spooky foggy rainy morning hike among tall pines brings the history of this 1933 shelter. Further up the trail is the historical plaque and chimney of the 1800’s Cloudland Hotel. So worth the morning hike to learn and see this wonderful place. Comes highly recommended. It’s foggy 75% of the time.

A 3 day AT backpack - stayed at pickles branch shelter. A very challenging trip out to Dragon’s tooth where we met others that came up the trailhead parking lot. Arrived late to camp. Third day more bolders and challenging terrain I got a ride out after two miles and made way for my stronger friends to continue on to Mcafee knob. IB Magee Beach Park Camping in Port Aransas Texas

Full hookup RV just behind sand dunes brings the beach a step away, less sand wind and all utilities :). A new building is finished great for wine and sunsets. Couple of piers nearby. Texas is gorgeous at this time of year, February- camped two nights at campsite with great views by lake. Next night we had to move the wind can get fiercest when you can break tent poles. An afternoon hike of a couple of miles with historical Pavilion and lake views - it’s nice to spend time birding on the trails. More adventures coming up

Just outside San Antonio Texas is Government Canyon State Park stayed two nights for hiking five miles to see dinosaur tracks - pleasantly surprised. Once upon a time the gulf coast shore. Continuing on with a state park series of hikes and camping during Texas cooler months.

Continuing Texas State Parks visiting during winter time. This Two nights stay camping few yards from the parking lot. We were greeted to unbelievable Wildlife, sunsets and sunrise. Very nice visitors on few trails about 3 miles. Hugely recommend this park for nature.

We have to do what we have to do. We all have or will have to makes those though decisions on trail to stay safe.
It’s the responsible thing to do for myself and for others like family, hiking partners and rescue services. We do this for the enjoyment if not find another trail lol 🤣
As an older hiker, I find that my emotional recovery time is sometimes greater than my physical recovery time. We have to make good decisions for our safety. I really enjoy your videos !
Thank you for watching and I am glad you shared. Being slow my stamina stays steady but I felt like crying for hours after 5 when I saw my friends waiting. It was like a self pity party lol.

Gossamer 1/8 foam pad. A small sit pad I had too. I also use under tent the d thurston tent xmid 1 ground cloth I did not bring the tyvek with me this time Views were amazing thanks for following along

We used the hiking stick (wide part) and pushed him off the trail sliding down the side. He was too full to move :)

I’ll be happy to mentor you and take you out on an overnight. I did this for a couple of friends and it truly is rewarding ! I want others to see the benefit of outdoor exercise.

Yes they do. Went out a couple of times - sluggish when park busy weeknights but worked good enough
Nice that it’s right at the beach.
I know the beach itself is free, just a permit cost and can use battery, a generator, dump tanks later. This is another good option too requiring less work and less sand :)

Choke canyon is great for wildlife!!! Every time we go we see alot of Turkey, deer and Javalina. Hopefully the lake level will rebound it has been low for a long time!!!😊

It worked well. Everything I took was high calorie. Struggled with eating anything but flavor and energy was good

Great idea to slack pack and move the cars each day. I have hiked most sections of this trail, but not all at once like you did. I'm definitely going to try this model.

Loved it, Liz! The sand trails are a love-hate situation. Some times you love them and Some times you hate them. I'll tell you one thing, it's one heck of a workout. The birding area was awesome! That sunset.... breathtaking. Ride That Tasty Wave

I love Mckinney Falls! Great Video! It is a bit close to Austin..Water falls still low flowing but got more water moving then when i went this last summer. If you ever want some great pizza after a hike, hit up Home Slice Pizza on Congress St! Worth all the calories😂

McKinney Falls is a cool State Park. I was out there last November. Beautiful video of the park. Thank you for sharing.
