Hello and welcome to my channel!
I'm Martin, a cyclist in my late 40s and I live on the amazing Lancashire/Yorkshire border (in northwest England, UK). Between family and work commitments I like to get out out my bikes as much as possible. Contrary to more recent trends in cycling, none of my bikes cost more than my car ... and I drive a fairly inexpensive second-hand car!
Over the last few years I've completed some of the UK's iconic multi-day cycle tours and I've also started doing my own bike maintenance at home, learning more about gear and keeping relatively inexpensive bikes on the road and in good condition.
If you like what you see please subscribe and come along for the ride (pun intended!). Hopefully the videos will get better as I figure out what I'm actually doing!
Happy cycling and stay safe!

How to Make Winter Cycling More Comfortable
A quick mid-week spin in my local hills, enjoying the first snowy conditions of the year and making a few - perhaps rather obvious - comments about how we can make life a bit easier on the bike over the winter months if we still intend to cycle outdoors.
Plenty of black ice on the trails at the moment so if you are heading out take care!

Should You Compare Yourself To Other Cyclists?

Join me on a mid-week ride heading east into some fairly hilly and tough cycling country, well for me at least. I'm not a big one for comparing myself to others on the bike but I wonder if there are times when making comparisons might be a good thing? Anyway, that was the topic for a bit of chat en route! Do you see any benefits of comparing yourself as a cyclist with others, or as something to...

Be Safe, Be Seen When Cycling - But What About Dark Clothing?

The weather is really starting to turn colder now, so I've invested in a new winter jacket. Only one colour option available in the store (black!), which got me thinking about the topic of 'be safe, be seen' and whether dark clothing or black really is an appropriate colour to wear on a bike. Do you steer clear of darker clothing when you're out cycling, or use extra reflective kit? What about ...

Hey folks! Welcome to join me on a little mid-week 45 miler in my local Pennine hills, setting up some stunning views and descents along the way! Perhaps no prizes for guessing my own conclusions! Stay safe and happy cycling!

Some great tips there Martin. Hats off to you for riding in those conditions. Like you and some others, i always wear sealskinz or aldi crane waterproof socks (they slways keep your feet warm and dry). I always wear specialized flat pedal shoes all year round and have no issues with the fit whilst wearing those socks. I also wear cheapo thermal compression tops from eBay as base layers (cheap and really warm). Quick question - what model of selfie stick /tripod do you use when out filming on the bike? Cheers mate. Paul.

Winter riders unite!
👍🙂
I would not cycle in winter with out my buffalo jacket made in Sheffield best garment going
Not heard of that jacket, will take a look. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling!
I use the buffalow mountain shirt version have fo over 30 years
Top tip for winter cycling. Buy your winter cycling gear in the summer when it's much cheaper. Massive difference in price off season. We are now buying summer gear for the same reason.
That's a great tip!🙂
I’m looking forward to getting out on my fat bike with studded tyres, the tyres are a game changer, we ride 12 months a year now
A lot of love for studded tyres in the comments it seems. All year round outdoors, love it! 🙂
Having a some shoes a size bigger for winter is a good idea if you’ve got thicker socks on, I’ve got some winter flat mtb shoes and need to get a pair of clip less shoes for if I’m out on my gravel bike. Always seem to feel the cold a lot more if I’m doing a road/gravel ride, suppose it’s cos I’m cutting through the air that much faster! Plenty of sales at the mo so will keep my eyes peeled.
Yes I think the speed and wind chill is a big difference between road and off-road in these kinds of temperatures. Size up is a good call for winter shoes. I always find thick socks in tight fitting shoes turns my feet to blocks of ice in no time! Thanks for the comment, Neal.
It's interesting to hear that you mention that your cycling layers are not working for you.I've cycled outside since the early 90's and have always used cycling or hiking layers. I've learned to be a tad cool when I start, so that I am not sweating which also means that I don't stop often. I typically wear an outer layer like you have in the video, but it is very much something that breathes which also helps me from over heating. As for the cycling up hills without getting too hot/sweating, I typically have studded tires on... although it also makes me choose certain routes that do not have any sort of pavement. But the studded tires help to keep you to keep an even energy energy level which again is key. Thanks for sharing, it's nice to hear what others are using for base layers etc..
Thanks for the comment, Jackie. Setting off feeling more on the cool side is a great tip, which I try and remember. It might just be a couple of bad choices with the cycling base layers I've bought so far but they seem overly tight and a bit uncomfortable (and not as warm) compared with the hiking stuff I use. My clothing choices I think score zero on the fashion and aero scales!😆
Great 👍 video I've found 3 light baggy tops keep you warmer air traps between your layers. That clip with sea gulls was brilliant 👏
I think I'm public enemy #1 with the local seagulls! 🤣I'm definitely with you on the loose layers approach, Matt. A not too tight fitting merino hiking top I've found works really well if included in that type of layering.
I admire your dedication to your subscribers and getting out into the 🥶. Think I'd just have to head for a cycling holiday somewhere warm each winter.
Warm days on the bike seem a long way away at the moment. I don't actually mind cold weather as long as it's safe (ish!) under wheel. Thanks for the comment as always, Randel.
Good clear video footage and advice and I appreciate you getting out and giving your tips .May I ask the make and type of your tyres as I am due an upgrade 👌🥇🚴♂️
Thanks, appreciate the comment. The tyres are the original stock Maxis Ardent (I think). No better or worse than other tyres I've had on MTBs. I have a set of Schwalbe G-One that will go on in the Spring for some slightly faster rolling and easy-offroad bikepacking. Happy cycling!
@ cheers my friend 👌Just picked up a set of new Mudguards for my winter race bike from Ron Spencer’s epic service 🚴♂️
i wear sealskinz all the time great vlog
onthe mountain bike that is
Thanks, Ash. I'd always been put off by the price but caved in a couple of years ago and bought my first pair. Definitely worth it!
I'm also a big fan of Sealskinz socks and gloves for keeping hands and feet warm during winter conditions. Aldi occasionally do Crane waterproof socks which I've found to be very good and less than half the price of Sealskinz. As you mentioned you may need to slacken off cycling shoes to accommodate the extra thickness.
Thanks for the comment, Ian. Yes, also found the Crane stuff really good over the years, although I never spotted waterproof socks - one to watch out for in the future.
Cracking vid and some really sensible ‘tips’. For me, at 72 and with both Asthma and COPD this freezing cold air is the worst thing for me. Looks like my indoor exercise bike is going to be my ‘ride’ for a while.
Thanks, Roland. Yes, all about keeping it sensible over the next few months. I haven't set my indoor trainer up yet but like every year I eventually cave in and get on the hamster wheel when it's really bad outside. Happy peddling! 🙂
Nicely made. Not so sure about the wisdom..😮 Can I ask you think to discuss my main dissatisfaction which is dogs. Loose dogs, no lead, muzzle oblivious to their indifferent owners... threatening and requiring defensive cycling. What to do?
Fair enough! 🙂Thanks for watching all the same, Felix. Funny you mention dogs as on this ride I had one that went for me - with the owner just shouting the dogs name to stop (which did bugger all!). I'm not the best with dogs generally, having never owned one, but they can be really scary for cyclists. Maybe something to discuss in a future video ... Happy cycling!
Good advice. I personally avoid going out below 5 degrees C. Don't feel safe on icy roads. A possible tip is not to go anywhere remote without phone signal - incase you need help - hyperthermia can set in if incapacitated for any length of time. I have cheap Aldi indoor trainer - not enjoyable like being in countryside!
Some good personal rules there, Andy. Yes, factor in a northerly wind chill at this time of year and you don't need to be off the bike long for that cold to really set in, and next stop hyperthermia. Thanks for the comment.
You’re braver than me 😳 ice and bikes = no thanks but I might try to get out on sunny fresh days. Another enjoyable trip 😊
Thanks, Paul. I tend to veer off road or not cycle at all with these kinds of conditions. On a tarmac road you just can't spot black ice and it falls into that 'not worth the risk category', doesn't it? Do hope we get a few of those nice sunny fresh days (and safe under wheel) this season! Happy cycling!
Overshoes and hardshell trousers combined is the only way I've managed to keep my toes dry and by extension warm which is something directly linked to my happiness! My dad lived in Norway for a bit, I've had his set off studded tyres hung up in the shed for getting on 10 years now just waiting for the day i have to slap them on to get to work.
I went years without using overshoes on the road bike, not realising what a massive difference they make - even the cheap Btwin ones I currently use. Fingers crossed for the studded tyres this winter! 😉
I always cycled from a young age and through into my 20s, on passing my driving test at 25 I drifted away a bit but never lost interest. I started again when my children were born and it just grew from there. I enjoy the health benefits and the psychological well being it gives me and as best I can I try to plan traffic free and off road routes as it doesn’t matter how conscientious or ‘safe’ you consider your cycling to be you cannot factor out other Road users. A bit like today’s episode I like to make use of canals as green routes out into the countryside and be surrounded by landscape and nature at which point I am in my element. Wherever possible I also like to take my bike with me when I travel and at present I am in Glasgow and took the opportunity today to take the train out to Garelochhead and cycle back via Glen Fruin, Loch Lomond and then the NCR through Clydebank and almost all of it traffic free👍 Keep up the good work I’m sure you are inspiring many😉
Thanks for the comment and so much of that really resonates! Sounds like a cracking ride back into Glasgow there. Happy cycling!
Great video and superb scenery. I think the tips were great and will certainly take them on board. Stay safe.
Thanks for watching, Stewart. Happy cycling!

ruclips.net/video/x0uAaMc_jEQ/видео.htmlsi=OmFcZCCSK7CBRzR1 Hi Martin, I thought you might like this brave French trike rider in Botswana, he does meet many other good people including an English bikepacker. I think I would feel safer in the Dale's. Cheers my friend. Frank
Nice video. I live about a couple of miles from Birdoswald so ride these roads and tracks a lot. Just a bit further north is Newcastleton with its MTB trails and also Kielder Water for MTB and gravel riding. It’s a really special area.
What a great place to live! Hoping to do a bit more exploring up that way, so thanks for the info! 🙂
Another great video ! I know those rds soooo well around d Barden/Appletreewick. New Inn is ok but the Craven Arms is up a few notches and lovely views. New Inn used 2b a MTB livery bsck in the day. When u turned left 2 Appletreewick if you went right you'd have had a beautiful climb 2 Stump Cross Cavans with great cafe. Also best cafe in the Dales in my opinion is Riverbank at Burnsall. Absolutely fantastic. Good excuse 2 go again snd check it out😅
Thanks, Mark. Yes, a couple of excuses there to go back, love it! We'd actually planned to go right and up Wharfedale head but had both forgot our lights and were a bit unsure about timing and getting back in the daylight! Next time for sure! 🙂
Hi Martin - Got to disagree with you on this one - I think high vis is essential for cyclists. I've been observing cyclists (usually they're passing me!) - the one's with high vis are much more visible. After watching your video two passed me one in black and one with a high vis jacket - I had an open view and could see them more than half a mile into the distance - the one in black was hardly visible and if it hadn't have been for his mate in high vis I wouldn't have known they were there. Got to say that the trend for cycling clothing to be black seems to me to be nonsense. Thanks for the videos and those amassing descents.
Hi Brian. Appreciate the comment. It's been really interesting reading others' views on clothing colour, and I must admit I've bought some extra reflective bits largely as a result of making this video and the thoughtful (non-shouty) feedback like yours. It's funny you mention the trend for black clothing. I walked into the store (my local Decathlon) with the intention of buying a super warm winter jacket in a bright yellow/red/orange and just about every piece of non-waterproof clothing they had was black or dark blue. No idea what the drivers for this would be - manufacturing costs, black just shifts more units (or whatever the sales jargon is)? Happy cycling!
Hi Martin - In my early days cycling wasn't a hobby it was a necessity - I cycled two miles to school on an old sit up and beg bike that belonged to my aunt - no yummy mummies to take you to school in those days. I started work when I was 15 - by that time I had a Claud Butler 'racing bike' - twenty five mile a day to work and further with night school. I those days the 50/60s every town and even some villages had cycling clubs and I joined my local club for Sunday club runs. One thing you didn't mention was the YHA - I went on several cycling holidays to North Wales, The Peak District, The Isle of White even a tour of Island on a tandem. Once I got a car and got married cycling was forgotten for a few years till I brought a secondhand Mercian - this brought back the memories but not the distances I used to travel. It wasn't till covid and a succession of other bikes that I got my present obsession with going out every day. So I suppose you could say that cycling was in my blood from childhood - never been up to your climbing and descending standard though! Thanks for the videos.
Brilliant 'origin story' Brian. Love it! 🙂
Got into cycling after my knees started complaining, age 50, having done 25+ years of fell running. Found that cycling (low impact compared to running) had no detrimental effect on my knees. In fact, I'd go so far to say it was beneficial, and not only for the knees. Wish I'd taken it up much earlier.
There's an Audax event each April called "Spring into the Dales" that includes quite a bit of this lovely route but in reverse. Starts/finishes at Mytholmroyd community centre (usually) and is 110km. It goes through Bolton Abbey so it'd tick that box as well. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info, Ian. Definitely want to try another Audax or two next year!
My favourite place to ride, great content, thank you for posting!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and happy cycling! 🙂
Riding on our regular local routes, lumpy but nice 👍
Definitely lumpy round that way ... tough riding but so worth it! 🙂
Very nice Mr. Onemorecyclist, made me homesick :)
Ah, you can take the Yorkshireman out of Yorkshire ... thanks for watching!🙂
@@onemorecyclist I will get back eventually, in the meantime I am getting a Clandestine custom bike made so I can ride a piece of England in my Australian bush abode, and keep watching your beautiful scenic rides :)
Just had a look at a few of the Clandestine bikes online. Very cool! 🙂
@@onemorecyclist He's got a really good cycling ethos, and a true craftsman.
Keys are easy to lose, I reckon combination locks are a safer bet. On a tour I slightly bent a key and luckily found someone with a hacksaw to release my bike.
I have a fairly good track record with not losing keys ... but can never find water bottles when I'm getting ready for a ride. I think asking in the pub if they had a hacksaw would have been the next option! 🙂
Excellent video thanks for sharing

Where did you get your top tube bag from?. Many thanks for another great video 👍
It's an 'Astra London' top tube bag fromAmazon - not sure if this link will work but here - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DC6FSK77?ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details&th=1
I'll comment on the bag touching the thighs ... There are bags that don't do that, for ex my 9litre Giant is fine, I don't touch it. And I have fat thighs - I rub the paint off the front of my saddle rails ;) It probably depends on how wide the bag is AT the seatpost, the thicker ones rub/ touch thighs. The rhino one looks quite thick/ wide at the seatpost, mine is more of a wedge shape.
Thanks for the comment, Tony. Yes it is fairly wide at the seatpost end. In all honesty I haven't noticed the bag touching my legs the last handful of times I've used it. Perhaps I'm packing/fitting it better with experience, not sure. Good bit of kit and still pretty pleased with it overall. Happy cycling!
I want to get this from halfords just for casual road riding to keep fittness levels up do people recommend this bike or a carrera hellcat both similar prices right now at Halfords
For what you're looking at riding-wise I'm sure both would be suitable. Not had a Carerra MTB but I had one of the road bikes a few years back and it was faultless for the price. Happy cycling!
U should ride from your hometown to London
For me any distance counts as a bike ride. Even a shopping trip counts, there and back 13 miles. I'm not competitive so while I love accounts and videos of people doing the PBP or LEL and the pain and effort involved, I consider we're all on a bike ride; I never claim to be a 'cyclist' I just ride a bike whenever I can. I've only just seen this video, a year ago 1000 now over 2000 subscribers; you must be doing something right.👍
Reading the comments it seems I'm not the only one coming back to riding a bike. My early cycling days were in the late 40's and 50's. First a Hercules and when I was 13 Dad bought me a used Raleigh Lenton Sports that was too big for me (I was told I'd grow into it😄). It was my transport until my 20's when it got stolen. I used public transport for a while and then bought a car. Along came marriage and children so free time was short and all thoughts of cycling had gone. I was lent a friend's Mountain bike and loved it. Multiple gears and brakes that worked. It rekindled my love affair with cycling. Many years later it's the one hobby that I've kept up and intend to continue until I 'fall off the saddle' so to speak. When I'm not cycling I'm enjoying videos, like yours, of other peoples cycle rides. Love the canal scenery.
Thanks, Colin. I've had to 'grow into' a few bikes too over the years! All good fun. 🙂
I got in to cycling to taxi my kids about on cross bar..
Haha, I hope not up too many hills as they got older! 🙂
I got back into biking during covid. Just to get to and from work. Which them lead to me riding 10 or 20 miles at the weekend. Now its a full blown hobby. Getting out at 5am and going on a 50 mile ride and now bike packing when i can. I do need to get out in the autumn and winter. But gove me spring and summer. Already planning next years 3 day bike packing trip for my 50th
Another pandemic nudge back onto two wheels, really interesting. Great to have something planned for next year already. Looks like we're both hitting 50 in 2025! Yikes! 🙂
I had a racing bike as a teenager and we used to go out for long Sunday rides. That was in the mid 80s. I didn't ride a bike for 20+ years, but always remembered those days. I got back into at about 40 years old, 15 years ago, and haven't really looked back. I love being fit and particularly enjoy the fair weather rides. I have never done bicycle touring but am thinking about getting into it in the summer.
Thanks for the comment, Paul. It's interesting, swinging back into cycling after a couple of decades I guess might not happen as much with later generations that didn't have those formative analogue years knocking about on bikes. Fair weather touring is a joy, although you might try it and think 'nope, not for me!'. Only one way to find out! 😉
I was born in 1960 and as far back as I can remember I’ve always had a bike. I’m a fair weather cyclist now but love getting out. We live hectic lives but cycling makes me slow down and just enjoy it. Don’t think I’ll ever stop 😊😊
Thanks for the comment, Paul. I think I'm a 'lifer' too with the cycling now.
Ah yes, caught the bug during lockdown. The warm summer months and traffic free roads prompted the missus and I to dust off a couple of old hybrids and venture outside. We now own two road bikes each and continue to learn more about cycling each day. Channels like yours are of tremendous help to us. Being born in the 60s we have to be realistic about our expectations but I think there is still a fair bit we can achieve in the years ahead 🤞🏽👍🏽
Definitely lots to look forward to and achieve! Great hearing about your cycling journey, Sheetal. That daily exercise window in lockdown threw up some quite surreal cycling experiences, didn't it? Roads that were never quiet or safe to ride on near me ended up completely deserted and cycle friendly.
Same here. Now I'm into bike packing. Or catching a train somewhere and risking home. My PB is about 55 miles. Also got into bike packing. Can't think of anything better than loading my bike up going out for the day. With food, camping stove for coffees and being out in the wilds
@@onemorecyclist very surreal fella, central London was like a ghost town!
@@grumpy-dad3701 Good for you fella. Our PBs are similar to yours, circa 60 miles. We’ve done the London to Brighton ride for a couple of years now and looking to see if we can work our way up to 100 miles in a day. Never tried bike-packing but you never know 👍🏽
@sheetalshah2327 bike packing is great if you like camping and biking. I've spelt in a couple of woods. A field of fresh cut hay - really comfy night sleep. I count it as a yearly pilgrimage to as many laces as I can get. Shame train fares are so much.
I was in to cycling as a teenager, but not racing... touring (or bike packing as it's called these days now it's been "discovered" 😂). So all over the Lakes, Northumberland, south west etc Lost it for many years when I was in the forces, mainly running at that time. But when I left my knees were shot so no running, I needed exercise so broke the bike back out. Full circle then, back into touring 😊. I do it for the fitness but mainly it's just good for the soul out on the bike on a sunny day. Love it
Couldn't agree more with those motivations, Brian. Definitely good for the soul. When I first went 'cycle touring' I don't think we actually knew what it was called. We had fell walking and back packing and beyond that ... not a clue! Good fn though! 🙂
i started cycling when i was 52 now 63 got rid of the car and cycle everywhere now best thing i did retired now so plenty of time now.
I'm sure a fair few people thought you were crazy to go carless. I can really see the appeal! Happy cycling!
I got into cycling 20 years ago from a running background. Once I got into my 50s and my times were getting slower I swapped to cycling and never looked back, I love it. Now retired and in my 70s this summer I had my eyes on a 70 mile bike ride but a week after turning 70 I got knocked off my bike by a car so basically lost the best part of the summer of cycling now I'm back and trying to build fitness. The accident was when I was riding slow on a roundabout the car pulled into me from a standstill so he was slow as well but my injuries were not good BUT my helmet saved me from a lot worse. I don't remember much of what happened but I do recall my head hitting the road and my helmet breaking under the impact. That helmet saved me, I had a bleed on my brain ( not good) broken wrist and other injuries at such a slow speed it's unbelievable. What I'm trying to say is I'm riding today because of that helmet, please use a helmet it saved me it could you as well one day. And the driver did not stop it was the public who got me the ambulance so I got prompt attention that probably saved me from a lot worse.
Appreciate the comment, Brian. A nasty accident there and I can't believe the driver didn't stop. I had a motorcycle accident years back and similarly it was passers by that rallied round, made sure I was okay and made arrangements to get me to A&E. Here's to a 71 miler next summer! 🙂
