Thanks, Jay. The Dales can be quite a tough place to cycle in (especially if you're not used to hilly riding) but I think this makes a great little introduction to what it's all about! Have a great Xmas! 🙂
That was certainly a nice glimpse of the Dales, it's really inspiring countryside. I can see now why one bike manufacturer named one of their models 'The Dalesman'. For the last 20 years I've been able to cycle on quiet roads straight from my front door. This is likely to change and I'll be moving into a flat in Southampton and it may mean the end of my cycling days. I just don't think I could cope with the traffic. If the move happens then your videos will be even more welcome. Thanks again.
That looks like a great route. Having recently watched your last one about comparing yourself to other cyclists this just reinforces for me that it is about what you get out of it; a good ride, lovely countryside and wildlife and time to think. Thank you for your channel I find it to be a source of both consideration and inspiration👍
Nice one Martin. Love cycling in the Dales. Regularly get the train to Ribblehead. Cycled back home from there the other week, inspired by one of your earlier videos. Lots of decent "gravel" paths around there but yours is a great advertisement for anyone thinking about going.
Thanks, Dave. Really chuffed that one of my videos gave you an idea for a ride! Stepping off the train with a bike in Horton or Ribblehead makes for quite the start to a bike route! 🙂
The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful, the stonewalls remind me of my native Massachusetts. Sorry about that little misunderstanding in Lexington back in 1775. Terrific video and music. Thanks for bring us along
Thanks for checking this one out, Frank. Yes, a 'shot heard round the world' indeed with that little spot of bother. Some of my clunky gear changes I think can definitely be heard in the next valleys! 🙂
Another great video Martin👍. Spent a lot of time in the area ,caving when I was as younger. We used to stay at Gayle Beck Lodge on left (19min 30secs) now crumbling.
Cheers, John. I always find myself doing a little double take when I occasionally see groups of cavers gearing up around the Dales, as it takes a moment to realise what kit they are using and what it's for. Never knew that building was a 'working lodge' back in the day. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling!
thank you so much for this..i'm an ex-pat, out of norfolk, returning annually if i can.. this ticks a box, especially if there's an option to elomgate it to about 50miles.. i lived in the UK until i was 55, never went to that part of the world (your part), it's on my list of to-do's now.. should be back june/july in '25.. your channel is great, keep pedallin' on the 'cycle we call life
That's a great video Martin, beautiful you put few Xtra in 2 get those brilliant views😊 I think Dent Head is pretty hard, always do it at end of ride heading towards Hawes. It's part of Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, 135 miles starting in Ilkley. You'd absolutely love that....pretty tough though. Kings dales is lovely, very quiet well worth doing
Thanks, Mark. To the extent that my fledgling camera skills allow I always try to film the rides rather than 'blog on the bike'. There's not much of a difference really but to me it justifies trying to frame a few views and ride past shots along the way if I can. That Yorkshire Dales cycleway sounds like a pretty epic ride (which I'm now going to check out!). Dent Head on really tired legs would be a formidable challenge I think. Happy cycling!
Thanks and yes I think a pretty accessible starting point by train or car. If coming from afar not sure if the Station Inn at Ribblehead does accommodation but Horton-in-Ribblesdale has options and is only 5 miles away (and on that train line etc.). Thanks for the comment.
Cracking route, great light too. Superb value for 30 miles. You could cut out the A65 by using the other quieter A-road to Burton then striking up to Ireby. How about Hawes - Buttertubs - Thwaite - Nateby - Mallerstang - Hawes? Not better, but equally stunning. It's hard to go wrong in the Dales.
You really can't go far wrong. I'll have to try that route suggestion, thanks! 🙂 I know north of Hawes from old fell walking days but can't ever remember being up that way on a bike.
Another great video and the views are fantastic. Will you be putting the mudguards on the boardman as that model as the pre drilled inserts doesn't it Martin.
Thanks. Yes, getting to that time of year where the mudguards need to come out. Even on dry days with the low temps the roads can still be wet now from previous day's rain etc. At the moment I'm using the detachable SKS Raceblade Pros - there's a video somewhere on my channel about them if interested. Thanks for the comment.
Great route again. Be good if you gave the stats at the end, I know you mentioned the mileage but the climbing stats would be great x000ft especially for us low landers over in the fens 😁 No need for avg speed, it's not a race
The Dales tourist bureau should offer you a job. Spectacular ride. Would a reasonably fit 66 year old be able to do this ride? Anything prolonged climbs over 12% usually means I'm means walking. Which camera did you film this? Thanks - keep up the good output!
Thanks, Andy. It's all relative but I think reasonably fit would get you round this ride and slow with plenty of stops just allows you to enjoy the scenery more! I'm not a big one for stats or staring at my Wahoo as I go round so this might be a little inaccurate, but I don't think there's anything over 12% until you get to the Dent Head climb towards the end - that hits 20% at the bottom but it's reasonably short lived (and you can just walk it if needed etc.). Do let me know if you do it and how you get on! I use a GoPro - Hero 8 until recently but a Hero 12 since the 8 went kaput in the summer. Happy cycling!
Running 11-34t on the Boardman. Out of the box it comes with an 11-30 which for me in the Pennines isn't a big enough cassette for the hills. I would have definitely used more gears if I had them!
It’s a good route, but I’d prefer to stay off the A65 at all cost, I feel it’s too risky for cycling. An alternative would be to take Kingsdale instead of Barbondale which is even more spectacular!
Definitely. I give a nod to the Kingsdale option in the video and the description, to avoid any A road riding entirely. I've only ever come back that way from Dent (i.e. descending) but it's another of those 'wow, look at this place' kind of roads!
@@onemorecyclist I live near Ingleton / Clapham so do this route, and similar, often. There are parts of the A65 which are fine, but that section is at the other end of the spectrum! Kingsdale is certainly excellent, and I prefer it to Barbondale for scenery, but then Barbondale's great too. If you have a look at a map, it's perfectly possiblet to get to Barbndale without going on the A65 other than to cross it, and without adding more than a couple of kilometres. The shortest is via Thornton-in-Lonsdale, across the A65 2km west of Ingleton (NOT onto the A687 as that's hazarous), towards Burton-in-Lonsdale, then right and back across the A65 to the loop through Ireby, around to Cowan Bridge, and finally about 500m of the A65 before a right turn off it to head up to Barbondale. Another great video; you have a very relaxing and positive manner.
As a Dalesman, you have done a great job of giving people a taste of what The Yorkshire Dales has to offer. Thanks :)
Thanks, Jay. The Dales can be quite a tough place to cycle in (especially if you're not used to hilly riding) but I think this makes a great little introduction to what it's all about! Have a great Xmas! 🙂

@@onemorecyclist It was a great ride back. Via Malham Tarn and eventually past Widdop Reservoir, blackshaw Head and dropping down into Todmorden

Thanks, Andrew. Really appreciate you following along and welcome to the channel! :)
Thank you for sharing such a lovely video

Once again a great video. Thank you.

Very enjoyable. You can start and finish the ride at Ribblehead railway station on the Settle Carlisle line.

It's great cycling up at Barbondale never tire from that route.... And a testing climb at Newby Head back up to Ribblehead viaduct 👍

Agreed. This video makes me want to travel to England just to ride the Yorkshire Dales. Beautiful.
Can I ask what gears got you up Newby Head? For me it felt like 11-34 was under geared
