Good video but I gotta say: Ive heard scarier horror stories than "someone else made millions off a comic book I wrote and its now a popular animated series on amazon but I only made a few thousand dollars". How about this for a horror story: You decide NOT to sell your ip. you own it and continue to work blood sweat and tears on it for years. a decade passes. a few hundred people have bought your book. most of them liked it. some of them loved it. by all accounts, a great comic book. Your morning alarm goes off. 6am. you put on your work uniform and the stupid little hat they make you wear. you check your phone. "🎈Happy 40th Birthday🎈". you perk up a little when you remember that its friday which means after work you will finally have a few hours to work on your comic book over the weekend. hopefully you wont be too tired this time.

Even though I am tempted to say all new comics are shit, it’s hard to say it because there are some well written and illustrated books, however there is very little NEW stuff happening, no risk just rehashed ideas and pretty pictures. (Very little variety in art styles) What I have to come to believe is that 1) Marvel and DC are corporations that take zero risk and churn out bullshit books due to that core restriction 2) Modern comics are not written into a long term continuity, they are short runs that build zero incentive to buy back issues to research the IP, in a bigger way IE their is no drive on behalf the reader anymore to learn about the overall character arcs etc. There is no Bible of overall continuity and constant reboots which is just a crutch for shitty writers. I actually think it’s the worse time I have ever seen in comics and I have been reading since 1985.

Matt you're an excellent teacher. I loved the examples you used - they were super effective - the example of not showing the punch was proven so effective when combined with the added captions. It really made your point of the punch not being shown as ok if it strengthens or supports what you are trying to say and uses the medium of comics best by bringing your imagination into play.

Artist here working on my own short stories. Your channel has quickly become my favorite for comics creation advice - I cant remember if I commented on this one before but this is one of the clearest videos I've ever seen on comic short stories plotting. This is after about 5 yeats of investigating the subject. Being American I've never read 2000 AD as its just not in most American comic shops. Based on this video I ordered and began reading Vol 1 of 2000 AD's "Complete Future Shocks." I'm learning a lot reading each one and analyzing the setup and payoff and judging how successful it was or wasn't. Before that I was reading other American anthologies and many stories in them didn't have a good structure that felt satisfying in the end. So thanks for the recommendation!

Is it just me, or does the Marvel Method sound like an AWFUL way to make comics? If Stan Lee didn't have the time to write more scripts, he should've hired more writers. He could've given them outlines of what he wanted to happen in each comic, or leave the creative decisions to them. Then, the artists draw the comics based on the full scripts.

I'm starting with a "magnum opus" but I've actually written and completed plenty of other, much longer things before, so I'm actually finding it quite enjoyable even though the format is different. I'll see what other issues I might run into down the line, but I plan on working page by page as I get the art done (self-publishing. Yes, I know. Expensive.)

Hi Matt, I'm pretty new to your channel but wanted to say that your videos are great! So to comment on this video, I'm an artist and a couple years ago I collaborated with a writer who had never done comics before (they had worked on tv/film scripts) and in their script they would describe multiple things happening at once all the time. I ended drawing many more panels than they expected - they would always tell me "wow you really slowed it down" and they didn't mean it as a bad thing but more that they were just surprised at how when I drew what they described in a short blurb in the script, it wouldn't be one panel but it would end up being a page of panels - they didn't understand at all that each action needed it's own panel. Their script wasn't broken down panel by panel but was written more like a film with a paragraph describing what the character does and then had dialog following like "Character A enters his apartment shutting the door behind him and sets down his keys and picks up his mail and begins tearing it all open" which obviously would have to be drawn in multiple panels. One thing I learned from that experience is that I would definitely prefer a writer/collaborator in the future who actually reads comics because I had to educate this person all the time on how comics work. It was a little frustrating at times. Luckily they were flexible in let me do what needed to be done to get it to work.

Artist here. I appreciate you being blunt about artists needing to be paid. Learning the business of making comics is a difficult process. In my first comic attempts I did the art on a couple sample stories/pitches for writer friends on the verbal agreement of doing something great together running on "pure love" for the medium. Stupid I know. After slaving away for weeks while also working a full time job, in both cases once I was finished the writers abandoned the projects for "life reasons" - not overnight but just being lazy and not pushing the project out and standing behind it. Their drive just fizzled out for various reasons So that left me with pages that I can never really do anything with since the stories are incomplete etc. The amount of frustration I felt was immeasurable. So I learned the hard way not to lift a finger unless I get paid upfront or sign a contract guaranteeing me 1/2 ownership. For most people comics is a low paying endeavor and for an artist it takes years of training to know how to draw well, design characters, know your anatomy, compose a page, know how to use software, etc, etc. I could go on and on. Many writers I've talked with seem clueless about this and look at artists like hiring a plumber- just a means to an end when in reality in comics the artwork and story is intertwined. If a writer comes to me and has an idea for a character and I design it for them going through multiple iterations, I feel I deserve 50% ownership of that character for bringing it to life with my unique sensibilities. To any writer out there wanting to make a comic try to remember that blood sweat and tears goes into making a great book as far as the art goes and respect that as an essential part of the process and pay your artists fairly. I feel that if you dont want to do this its better for you to just write a novel where art is not required.

Glad you’re doing it your own way matey. I wouldn’t say there’s gatekeeping stopping stores from stocking small press books. It’s more about distribution and stocking comics that store know they can sell. I’ve spoken to hundreds of stores over the years about stocking my comics. Loads to…but more don’t and that’s because the stores tell me their customer only but big two and sometimes image…but raises the question, how can they buy it if they don’t know about it and you don’t stock it?! That the crazy part. Anyway best of luck 👍 Thanks for the support
