    Hi Matt, I'm pretty new to your channel but wanted to say that your videos are great! So to comment on this video, I'm an artist and a couple years ago I collaborated with a writer who had never done comics before (they had worked on tv/film scripts) and in their script they would describe multiple things happening at once all the time. I ended drawing many more panels than they expected - they would always tell me "wow you really slowed it down" and they didn't mean it as a bad thing but more that they were just surprised at how when I drew what they described in a short blurb in the script, it wouldn't be one panel but it would end up being a page of panels - they didn't understand at all that each action needed it's own panel. Their script wasn't broken down panel by panel but was written more like a film with a paragraph describing what the character does and then had dialog following like "Character A enters his apartment shutting the door behind him and sets down his keys and picks up his mail and begins tearing it all open" which obviously would have to be drawn in multiple panels. One thing I learned from that experience is that I would definitely prefer a writer/collaborator in the future who actually reads comics because I had to educate this person all the time on how comics work. It was a little frustrating at times. Luckily they were flexible in let me do what needed to be done to get it to work.

      That’s a very common story matey. As you know they are very different mediums…well done for overcoming it

    Artist here. I appreciate you being blunt about artists needing to be paid. Learning the business of making comics is a difficult process. In my first comic attempts I did the art on a couple sample stories/pitches for writer friends on the verbal agreement of doing something great together running on "pure love" for the medium. Stupid I know. After slaving away for weeks while also working a full time job, in both cases once I was finished the writers abandoned the projects for "life reasons" - not overnight but just being lazy and not pushing the project out and standing behind it. Their drive just fizzled out for various reasons So that left me with pages that I can never really do anything with since the stories are incomplete etc. The amount of frustration I felt was immeasurable. So I learned the hard way not to lift a finger unless I get paid upfront or sign a contract guaranteeing me 1/2 ownership. For most people comics is a low paying endeavor and for an artist it takes years of training to know how to draw well, design characters, know your anatomy, compose a page, know how to use software, etc, etc. I could go on and on. Many writers I've talked with seem clueless about this and look at artists like hiring a plumber- just a means to an end when in reality in comics the artwork and story is intertwined. If a writer comes to me and has an idea for a character and I design it for them going through multiple iterations, I feel I deserve 50% ownership of that character for bringing it to life with my unique sensibilities. To any writer out there wanting to make a comic try to remember that blood sweat and tears goes into making a great book as far as the art goes and respect that as an essential part of the process and pay your artists fairly. I feel that if you dont want to do this its better for you to just write a novel where art is not required.

    I’m glad I’m going the self publishing route because 50% for just getting my books into stores is just insane lol makes no sense. I enjoy personally communicating directly with comic stores who are excited to sell my books. Including MidTown Comics in NYC. So I’m good with all of that 😂 the gatekeeping days are over

    • @MattGarveyComics
      @MattGarveyComics 2 месяца назад

      Glad you’re doing it your own way matey. I wouldn’t say there’s gatekeeping stopping stores from stocking small press books. It’s more about distribution and stocking comics that store know they can sell. I’ve spoken to hundreds of stores over the years about stocking my comics. Loads to…but more don’t and that’s because the stores tell me their customer only but big two and sometimes image…but raises the question, how can they buy it if they don’t know about it and you don’t stock it?! That the crazy part. Anyway best of luck 👍 Thanks for the support

    Great insight, my heart goes also to those artist who undervalues themselves on extreme rates back in the 2000s up to 2015s. As much how people will find desperate ways to find their clients (on which most of them are not corpos.) by devaluing themselves it's best that we should all treat this as a proper art business unless you're from somewhere else outside U.S. and the tax system differs but I'd also figure it out why some companies outsource clients to save money on which why the pay rate themselves are on that level. P.S. also you said around at 8:40 - 9:01 mark I can see some folks are guilty of telling other artist what their charge rate should be during the days on deviantart (and I see some guys telling that on Quora as well) only to lowball the price based on their skill level as such and it can be discouraging as well once reality catches up.
