My Ham Radio Journey
США
Добавлен 2 мар 2024
I will use this channel to document my return to the Ham Radio hobby. Being out of the hobby for years, I feel like a NOOB once again. I am a long-time RUclipsr so I see it fit to share my story with others who are either new or returning to this fantastic hobby. I will not be doing how-to-videos. I feel that is covered very well. I will just document some of Ham Radio's experiences as I have them. Thanks for stopping by and having a look.I I hope to work you on one of the Ham Bands. 73s!
How To Operate Portable Ham Radio Using Minimal Equipment
This video shows how I set up to operate a ham radio in the field. The minimal amount of equipment needed shocked some viewers. I also included some CW copy practice, listen, and learn.

A very useful briefing. Thank you. Phil, Suffolk. U.K.🇬🇧 73 g0nik.
Personally I am going for a Kilo at every park in Bucks County, PA. So that means many repeat visits to a park.
That is a good way to look at repeat visits. Thanks for watching. 73s
What EFHW are you using? Thanks! Norm/W1CIP
I built this antenna from a kit. You can buy it here: km4ack.square.site/product/49-1-efhw-antenna-kit/34. It is easy and fun to build. He has a video with step-by-step instructions. Thanks for watching. 73s.
Thanks for another great video! Norm/W1CIP
thanks for the cw practice ... I need it
You're welcome. We all need to practice, and it is also fun. Thanks for watching. 73s
I love having repeat hunters. It's like hearing from an old friend! I'm glad they don't mind hunting the same parks over and over. 73 de KO4TFE
I feel the same way. I really like operating at US-1409. Thanks for watching. 73s
Same here. Work AC2CD Tobi almost every time.
Great video. I think we activate where we can and hunt what's available. I know some folks who get excited being first, sure, me too. But I also really enjoy trading dits with regular hunters I hear most every time. Keep up the good work, Jack.
I feel the same way. It is also fun hunting other hams that we hear in the field. Thanks for watching. 73s
Interesting video that could be improved with some editing.
Thanks for the input. It was edited but I enjoy showing as much as I can without to much polish. These are ham videos to learn with. Thanks for watching. 73s
After getting good reports on cw, it would have been worth a try what’s going on on SSB. But after all you showed us an interesting experiment. I am a G90 „heavy user“ and always love seeing fellow hams using this nice radio.
Thanks I am not a SSB guy I like the quiet of cw. Thanks for watching. 73s
Get some "D" rings, they are much stronger and one side is flat which will lay against the PVC Pipe much better. Any of the Big Box stores will have them.
That is a great idea. These key rings I am using just broke in high winds. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for watching. 73s
30°F is actually still super warm Temps 😜

Thanks for showing the $8.00 antenna ..that's about my speed for a new / old ham....got my first ham set and novice in about 1964 and did only code but life got in the way and at 70 I just started back got my tech and working to my general ...and relearning code again so I really enjoy your videos ..so far I've just got 3 HT's but looking for a mobile rig...can't decide if a dual band or a quad band though that Xiegu might be worth waiting and saving up for. and Merry Christmas too
For the price, it is a great radio. Check out Radiootty for great package deals. Welcome back to the hobby. Thanks for watching. 73s.
Inverted V is a good option . Only hanging it from a tree with a little bit more work could be improved upon ? Aerials close to objects (trees ,houses sheds, ground etc ) don't work quite so good ? If you could run the line over the tree to another tree and suspend the wire in the clear , between the 2 trees the sig should be better ? Maybe a video to prove my point ,or prove me wrong?
I will have to wait until it warms up for that one. I can't get my car between the trees. Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching. 73s
Another great video. Keep them coming! Norm/W1CIP
24.5feet to a 9 to 1 40 to 10 with atu works for me

Can’t stand CW but I’m sure once I’m good at it I’ll enjoy it 😂

I'll be trying something similar with ft8 soon... We're not as cold on the other side of PA but it's still cold!
PA is getting cold quick. Thanks for watching and good luck with the ft8. 73s
Your goal is exactly the same as mine -- 30 WPM. I am very much struggling with this because at higher speeds, I cant hear the difference between H/5, V/4, or J/1.
I find listening and trying to work on CW contests is helping a lot. I listen a few times to ensure I get the call correct before calling the station. Good luck, remember speed over time. Thanks for watching. 73s
Verry good job sir.Bravo.73 from SV 134 Athens Greece.

Get an arborist throw bag and a pair of gloves from your favorite river retailer. I use a 12 Oz bag. It always comes down.
I really need a throw line. Thanks for the tips. Thanks for watching. 73s
Hi Jack, Maybe an extension to your POTA set. An umbrella that protects you and your equipment from falling nuts. See you again in a next video. Greetings, John.
That is not a bad idea. Thanks John for watching. 73s

Good video thanks.like it with no edits as good to see what goes wrong.new subscriber from across the pond .laters jack.73
It makes the video a little longer, but I want to show there can be issues while learning to build antennas. Thanks for watching. 73s
On my first park QRP, I made 20 contacts. Next time, I did 3. We can't win them all. Good video.
I feel the same way. I feel this is why POTA feels like fishing. Thanks for watching. 73s

One of the general test questions is not solder grounds connections,so you did good. Also palomar sell 1" choke bead that works excellent for your choke coil.
Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching, 73s

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. 73s
Neat. I'm too lazy to write so I use Smart Logger on my cheap lenovo tablet/laptop I have a X6100 mounted on mount that bolts up to one of the seat bolts. Works well. Very cold today here in SE PA. Happy and Successful activations ! 73
This cold weather is crazy, but it is the time of the year. Thanks for watching. 73s
When I operate from the car I use a laptop tray with slide out mouse deck and that sits on my lap with the computer. I put the rig either on the wide center arm rest of my pick-up or if my smaller car on the driver's seat. For paddles I use a handheld one.
Sounds like a really nice setup. Thanks for the information, and thanks for watching. 73s
You are correct, the thicker the wire, the broader the bandwidth. But, on HF it is so minuscule you would be lucky to read the difference on an antenna analyzer. The same can be said for the insulated vs bare copper wire. I found the insulated wire makes a barely noticeable difference in bandwidth, but it is still not much. When I was a novice, I used THHN copper and looped then ends around the insulator, soldered and then covered the open gap with silicon. It was just because I had it and wanted to water proof it for no good reason. But when we had an ice storm and I was on 80 meters, all of the local hams shut down due to the noise. I did not hear it. When the older Extra class , who lived just 2 houses down, visited, he couldn't believe how quiet my station was. So, I now use a loop at the end, covered in silicon glue/caulk. At the cobra head, I make a connector where I can adjust the length of the wire. When I get the best SWR, I cut the extra off and waterproof the connection. Check it out sometime.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing these ideas; I will try them in future builds. Thanks for watching. 73s
Great video.
Thank you very much. Thanks for watching. 73s
Not only we have plenty of stink bugs in eastern PA I found one o. A Rhine (Europe) river boat. Dispatched it.
We have a lot of bugs to deal with, that is for sure. Thanks for watching. 73s
Pileups are rough in CW! I wish more ops would learn to spread out and call off frequency a bit. It makes a HUGE difference!
When I am hunting, I am always just a little off-frequency. That way, I find I get through a lot of pile-ups. You are correct. It seems like, at times, we are all on top of one another. Thanks for watching. 73s
Great antenna!
It was also fun to build with easy to follow instructions. Thanks for watching. 73s

Excellent radio, my first hf rig
It is a great radio and with 20 watts you can make a ton of contacts. Thanks for watching. 73s
Is the g90 a good beginner radio I have been looking at them but no one around me has one or any experience with them
It is a great first radio. I just talked to a ham last night who was on a G90. He said it’s his only radio and he also loves it. This is where I bought mine as a bundle. www.radioddity.com/cart. Thanks for watching. 73s
Yes the G90 is a perfect beginners rig. I have one for quite a while now which I use mobile and I find it great. Been on air for 40+ years now and like most people a bit doubtful about Chinese electronics. After reading up on the G90 and hearing all good reviews I bought one and to be honest the G90 is one great rig. 73's
I came to see the "Straggle".
Man trying to pick up 30’ of mast and the antenna took everything out of me. Thanks for watching. 73s
I'm starting to work through the CW way of life
Once you catch on, you may never go back to other modes. I really enjoy CW. Another good tip is slow-speed rag chew. Send out a CQ at a speed you are comfortable with and chat with others. Thanks for watching. 73s
Your videos are so inspiring! Amazing what can be done with Ham Radio. I was told I did not have an aptitude to learn a language. I was actually told by my High School Principal I was not college material. I remember that day with her and my mother. Well, thankfully my mother did not take her advice. I did finish college and today I am a CPA. Does not help much with Ham Radio except I can tell you when I have spent too much on Ham Radio. If I can learn CW, well I am sure anyone can learn it. And LICW is a wonderful organization. I keeps me motivated and I see others and that I am not alone in my CW journey. And it is a journey, enjoy the journey. Like you, I have been a Ham for 25 years (Long Time). I did CW traffic handling for over 10 years. Back then all that was available was FISTS Code Buddy Program. And Slow Speed CW Nets. I basically listened to Slow Speed CW Nets and checked in one day and the rest is history. Today we see POTA. And many other opportunities to learn and use CW. And, CW Ops are very kind. A wonderful welcoming community. So I only operate CW, and I am so thankful I can participate in this great community. Keep up the great inspiring videos! Thank you and I hope to meet you and others on the air. Bill KG4FXG
Nice video. In this case I don't think the bandwidth of the wires matters, because you are using it with a tuner. Worst case, you will have to hit the tune button when moving between CW and phone portions of the band.
I am a cw guy so I don’t go much over the cw portion of the band. Great tips. Thanks for watching. 73s
Great video. FYI Walt is K4OGO, not K3
