Fiona Mackenzie - Outdoor adventures in Scotland.
This channel initially began because I’d challenged myself to 12 months of outdoor adventures. I set myself this challenge because I believed it was the perfect way for me to push myself out of my comfort zone and face my fears, the biggest of which was doing things alone. In doing so I truly discovered who I was and developed an all encompassing love of the outdoors. The 12 months came and went but on I still adventure. You can follow me through my adventures and I would love to hear about your own exciting journeys of self-discovery!

Loch Etive - Glamping it! A canoe adventure in Scotland!
Annnnd....I'm back! Sorry it's been so long and thanks to all that checked in - life has definitely gotten in the way!
Join me and my friend Ben on my first ever canoeing adventure. With forecasted rain and high winds I really wasn't looking forward to it but went along anyway. And boy am I glad that I did because it turned out to be one of the best adventures I've done!
Flat calm sea, glorious sunset and as usual when I'm out in the wilds, I was befriended by the local wildlife. Not to mention the great company and the luxury feast that Ben cooked up for us in the evening. The only downside was having to leave the next morning!

We cycle across the wild and beautiful Rannoch Moor, tackle the famous Devil’s Staircase and we get up close and personal with the local wildlife. Join us as we put our mental toughness to t...

The West Highland Way is famous as being one of the UK’s most challenging hiking trails. In this video my friend Bryan (@BryanScotland) and I cycle Part I of the 96-mile trail from Milngavie to Tyndrum. My mental toughness is really put to the test with adverse weather conditions and uncycleable trails on the hardest cycle I’ve ever tackled! The more we put our mental toughness to the test, the...
AONACH EAGACH RIDGE: Facing fear with my first solo scramble
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
I have taken giant leap out of my comfort zone and tackled the mainland UKs longest, narrowest (and reputed to be the most difficult!) ridge .......alone! 💪 The Aonach Eagach Ridge has been a foe of mine for many years and I never believed I'd ever do it - let alone do it by myself! Up until this year I'd never even been on a hill walk by myself. 😯 I faced so many fears with this one but the re...
From Glencoe and Beyond: Come With Me On My Climbing Journey! 🧗🏻♀️
Просмотров 7572 года назад
I've started exploring the realms of climbing and in this video you can COME WITH ME on my very first outdoor mountain climb! ⛰ I passed the role of lead climber into the hands of my climbing friend, Ben as I accustom myself to the (daunting) thrill of it all! 😱 It's all about adding the building blocks the experience - from the bouldering wall, to the lead wall and to the outdoor rock face. He...
Harris, The Hebrides: Solo Camping, Finding Solitude & Having a Revelation! ⛺️
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
In this Hebrides adventure, I come across some unfounded feelings of mine… fear… and it’s been a revelation! 💪 ➡️ “I’m not going to fear something that I haven’t tried yet. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it” In my first REAL solo camp, (my first was all the way back in February!) solitude replaces socialising but I didn’t feel lonely. Instead, I felt nurtured. The hills are a necessary escape...
Fiacaill Ridge: Scramble on Cairngorm ⛰

"I am a total addict to this stuff now!" ⛰ My friend Ben @boonermerson (Instagram) joins me again after joining me at my Curved Ridge adventure. Since then, I've been getting to the indoor climbing wall, giving me some extra confidence for this adventure - give this adventure a watch to see how my scrambling progresses! 💪 Going through a divorce or breakup, what's the one thing that could give ...
Grey Mare's Tail: Bivvy Camping & A Chat About Alcohol As A Coping Mechanism 🏞🍷
Просмотров 6453 года назад
First time bivvy camping since winter! 🏕 From going on a spontaneous night out before this adventure, it was a wonder how I'd feel the next day, combined with the midges too! 🐜 I took a moment to think back to my coping mechanisms after my divorce. Admittedly, internal pain led to more glasses of wine in my tougher moments, and admittedly this temporary relief more often than not could result i...
Bosta Beach: Championing Sea Swimming!
Просмотров 5323 года назад
My friend’s first ever wild swim! 🌊 (At Bosta Beach in Lewis) Before going, I wondered if wild swimming might feel a strange sensation to my friend. She took it like a champion. Could you?🤔 It’s time to champion being your best self. Sometimes surrounding yourself with other champions will help you mirror their champion’s attitude if you don’t feel you always have it in you. 🏆 It’s important to...
Beinn Chabhair: My First Munro Alone and Beating Reluctance ⛰
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
Despite recurring reluctance, I’ve bagged my first munro, solo!⛰ There’s a lot of empathy I feel for my clients when hardship (such as breakup/divorce) brings them feelings of inability, reluctance, or uneasiness about being alone and doing things solo. These feelings can sprout when new norms post-separation are novel and perhaps have never really been unearthed. 🤔 Despite all odds, clients go...
The Curved Ridge: Scrambling and Turning Fear Into "Why Can't I?" 🧗🏻♀️💪
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.3 года назад
With a reputation for being one of the finest scrambles in Scotland, how could I miss out? The Curved Ridge, conquered. 💪 There is a BUT - I had so much fear built up initially. Could I really do this? My friend, Ben @booneremerson (Instagram) started to instil confidence in me when introducing ropes and I've really got to give him credit for giving me a space to release my fears. Have you rele...

@@ramonscott6045 haha thanks!! ☺️
Fantastic video and adventure!! Will be doing this in 2025 (and the rest of the UK afterwards) - my partner and I cycled across Canada in 2022 (@N2L_Never2Late) and are looking to move our adventures off road! These videos have really helped envision the route and give terrific tips for doing it!! THANK YOU so much and for sharing it with us! Wishing you well in all your adventure!
Amazing
Brilliant! I love this place, no matter the conditions or time of year it never fails to impress. What time of year did you go?
Fantastic video just started watching your channel Please can we have some more Hope all is well with you more please
I fell off in 1994 whilst training with The Royal Marines. I survived obviously, but I've been left with permanent injuries. I always look at videos to see if I can remember any of it, but luckily not.
That’s terrifying and I’m so sorry it’s had an impact on the rest of your life. I must admit I did envisage what could happen if I made the wrong move or had a momentary lapse in concentration when I was up there. I took as many precautions as I could, as I’m sure everyone does, but accidents do happen - sadly with tragic outcomes. It’s certainly not a scramble to be taken lightly. Thank you for commenting and sharing your story. I think it’s good for people to hear about the dangers of this mountain from someone who has experienced it first hand.
My channel is the Reluctant Fell Runner and your title is Beating Reluctance! I don't believe we've ever met so that's a bit harsh! Best wishes to you out there.
Haha I don’t think I’d be beating you anyway seeing as you’re a fell runner - reluctant or not - I tend to wheeze my way up these mountains on my hands and knees so wouldn’t be able to catch you 😂
Great vid. If you haven't done the Torridons then they should be next on your list. The AE ridge and the Torridons are the best walking in Scotland IMO.
Can you share your gpx file if you still have it - its GPS route file recorded by your watch Great video
Amazing Fiona!
Thank you Jamie! 😁
Well done ! For a few seconds I thought you were going to back out of taking the plunge.
Haha I was very close!!
Well don’t to you both! An epic multiple day MTB/ hike a bike adventure. I’m totally blown away by your determination and perseverance in such challenging conditions. Amazing, simply amazing!
Hats off to you both, those conditions were horrendous! Still you kept going, on spite of the challenges!
Loved this, I've only done the Beauchaille once, great views!
Thank you! I’ve been up the buachaille many times but this was the first time doing the curved ridge. It was amazing!! 😊
@@FarForFiona well you smashed it! Love your channel, I'll be driving past the Beauchaille on the way to Skye in October, I might have to check out this ridge!
@@anthonysmithyman372 you definitely should! Hope you have a fab time in Skye!
@@FarForFiona thankyou!
Great film, 20 years since I did this, loved it.
Thank you so much! 😊
I had a similar idea years ago but instead Pentlands I was going to pitch my tent in Glencoe. Mainly wondering with its history and all that would I get scared at night. The point of all this is to face your fear and get out of your safe bubble. We are all to compfy these days. Was impressed by your fire. Great job Fiona
Love your vid. Excellent filming and “ I want to do that now!”
Haha thank you! ☺️
You've completed one of the most freighting scrambles in the world, congratulations! That was the best filming of the ridge I have watched. I plan to build my way up to being able to do the ridge but I am terrified of heights. Wish me luck
Aw thank you! It will be a real achievement if you manage to overcome the fear of heights. There’s no way I could have done it if I’d been scared of heights - at least not without a guide and a sturdy rope! Good luck! 😃
@@FarForFiona 🤔👍
I take my hat off to you Miss. There is no way i could have done that ridge i am watching from the couch and think i got altitude sickness looking at the drop either side. All the very best in your adventures.
Haha thank you! I never thought I’d do it either but it just shows what you can achieve when you put your mind to it! 😅
Great stuff, well done. I did a winter traverse of that ridge years ago and it's strange to see it bereft of snow.
Oh my goodness, hats off to you! I can’t even imagine doing that with snow and ice to contend with and the pressure of limited daylight hours! 😅
Ah, it was a wee bit of a buzz, especially, as you know, that you can't escape off it essentially until you get to the end. Now Curved Ridge, on the Buachaille is another Winter classic, but it also looks really interesting as a Summer scramble.
@@kevclaremcd yeah the curved ridge is a real thrill. The views are spectacular! Again though, wouldn’t fancy tackling it in winter!
Nice video
Thanks! ☺️
Well done! Just learned about this the other day when 3 people died on it. Given that you did it on your own, then I'm gonna go for it, bugger it!
Haha that’s the spirit! I had a lot of advice from others that had done it before and I made sure I did it on a dry day. I was well prepared!
Really enjoyed this video, loved how genuine it was. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Yes I try to be as honest as I can in all my videos. No bravado here! 🤣
Have climbed the aonach eagach ride seven times and each time it threw up a different challenge. Used to think what am I doing here? But glad I did climb this wonderful ridge. The descent down the clachaig gulley was an adventure on its own
I didn’t go down that way, I took the long (but easier) descent. I figured I didn’t want to push my luck to much! 7 times is incredible! 😊
Great job!!! I will be in the Glencoe area in two weeks and had really to do this but didn't want to pay $430 usd for a guide. Thanks to your video, my confidence level went up a notch 😉 Cheers!
So sorry for the late reply! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. How did you get on? 😃
A really lovely film. Thanks for sharing. I love that you ventured further around the coast, as despite Huisinish also being a lovely beach, it can become a little too peopled at times. I always found that beach opposite Scarp to be truly magnificent, and barely another person in sight. I camped a little further around between Cravadale beach and Loch Cravadale. That particular Harris coastline, that continues on up to the equally magnificent Uig in the Isle of Lewis, is like nothing else.
Good footage, better than most, the SMC book seemed to gloss over the climb down after the first munro, lets face it we are hill walkers not climbers, so that takes us well beyond our comfort zone.
Thank you!
Fantastic well done
Fantastic ! Very , very well done .
Thank you Fiona! ☺️
Awesome! Alt J tune fitted in well for a summit 👍🏻
Haha thanks! I do love a bit of Alt-J!
Well done, lass! Been eyeing the ridge up, and watching this, I'm shitting myself! Very well done
Haha the footage makes it look a little bit worse than it actually is because it’s shot with a wide lens. Hope you get round to tackling it, if you haven’t already! 😊
Very nice video Fiona. can you please tell me from who and what that beautiful music is that you play in your video. Thanks greatings Berry
Another great vid, inspirational. Thanks
Thank you Neil! 😊
Greta filming & good luck with the rest of your adventures. Good on you for having the bottle to do it solo; no mean feat
Thank you Neil! I was well advised by experienced climbers before I tackled it solo. Couldn’t have done it without their encouragement and knowledge 😊
This was amazing, brilliantly recorded. Great views. Well done, it looked tough.
Well done on you 👏 my first mountain was Ben nevis then went onto doing curved ridge without ropes was amazing , done a few mountains but with people and now I feel I can go solo but I'm scared 😱 to do ⛰️ myself , if u can do it I can also ,thank you for sharing 🏴⛰️❤️🏴
Hi there, just came across your vid and thoroughly enjoyed it. Me and my mate tried it a few years ago, but my mate didn’t feel confident continuing after Meall Dearg so we headed back, one day I’ll be back to finish it. Your edit was spot on and I really enjoyed it, you’ve got another sub.👍 Regards Frank.
Hi Fiona/Frank I managed to get this done last week and what an adventure it was, unfortunately not much in the way of views. I'll certainly do it again in better weather.
@@alistairthow1384 🤣🤣 great stuff Alistair. How did you find it.? Did you do it solo.?
@@hikingwithfrank315 High Frank I found it OK, I intended going up myself as I didn't want to risk any of my friends. I met a another solo climber in the carpark and buddied up. Amazing experience and going up with someone else is a nerve settler. (Thank you Andrew) I'll certainly be back soon for the full bhona view wise😉
@@alistairthow1384 thanks Alistair, yeh think I’ll wait till I can go with someone, nice to share the experience with someone. Yeh you’ll feel better going back and yes you want the views up there.👍
If your available Frank to go up before Friday and the weather breaks I'll buddie up?
Climbed that a number of times but first time had a guy that knew it well and showed me the handholds at the tricky bits. You'll need to try the chancellor next time. Safe journeys
Thanks for the tip! I’ve not heard of the chancellor though….going to Google it now! 😁
Great stuff, did it 30 years ago & was helicoptered off due to an accident on descent. You have filmed it well giving everybody sense of the task & bottle needed particularly on your own. I will follow your adventures with interest & anticipation, good luck, take care.
Thanks Robert! I hope you made a full recovery after your accident when you did it! It was on my mind the whole way round how easily it could happen. I was afraid to switch off for a second! Thanks for the follow! Take care. Fiona
@@FarForFiona Hi, not doing much in the way if climbing more out in my bike. Have made 5/6 short films with GoPro loch Lomond, the kelpies, Glasgow. Hopefully some new places this year as the weather allows. Take care. 😄🛵🏴👋
wow, beautiful place. just going to start by saying, proud of you for doing what you're doing. i used to love wild swimming but now i've got the story just like yours, and gave up on alot of things in life. just wanted to say, well done and hope your still going strong. why is it easy to give the right advice but so hard to take your own advice. hope its helped you find the peace you need.
It is so very hard to get out the door but it gets easier with practice, you just have to put one foot in front of the other and switch your mind off until you’re out there. Sorry to hear you’ve gone through similar things to myself. In the same way I do hope that you use this to get back into doing the things you used to love doing. Take care.
Great video, Fiona! Very inspiring, i'm gonna have a go at this this year, what time of year did you guys do it? Did you get any problems with midges?
Hi Rob, thanks! It was mid October when we did it so the midges had all but gone and it was too windy for those that were still around (thankfully!). Good luck with it yourself! It’s so beautiful and well worth doing. I’d do it again I think. 😊
@@FarForFiona thanks, I’ve booked accommodation for May, really looking forward to it! 😀
Well done. I need to get the train up to Scotland sometime soon. Looks such a special place in those mountains.
Aw yes you should! It’s very beautiful up here!
Best video of this ridge crossing I've seen so far, it's still on my list, well done doing it on your own
Thank you! And thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Hopefully it’s spurred you on to tick it off your list! 😁
Absolutely fabulous I unfortunately came to a sticky end on the two years ago suffering a torn ACL what a decent that was but really well done yourself x
Oh my goodness, I can imagine only imagine! It was bad enough getting down in full health! Never been so tired in my life as when I made it back to my van!
Just discovered your wonderful channel. I'm going to the west Highlands and Skye next May, literally can't wait. Hoping for a sunny, warm 10 days. I've only driven across Skye to get the Uist ferry, I want to see it all. Not sure brave enough to jump in but will bring my cossie anyway. Wonderful, thanks so much ❤️
Great video, well filmed, no annoying music 👍😆 subscribed
Haha thanks! 😂
Great vlog Fiona! I know it's a year old but it was lovely to watch, it was relaxing! Thank you. I've started walking on my day(s) off to deal with the bad days and it helps! Will have to try wild swimming! Thanks again and keep well!
I’ll just stick to my Munro’s. I’ve a few friends who have done it and they can’t believe I’m hesitant to attempt it. You did amazing and well done 👍
Thank you! I totally understand where you’re coming from because I was there too before I actually did it. I would say that it’s not as terrifying as I’d imagined it would be but I gained some confidence a few weeks before this by climbing the curved ridge with a friend so felt that I was finally ready. And I spoke to a lot of others that had done it so that I could get as much information as possible before setting out on my own. You’ll never know unless you try! Thanks for watching! 😊
great stuff! hope you get out to play soon.
Me too! 😁
Such a blessing to live anywhere in Scotland! I'm 60 and have never been. I absolutely love watching videos of Scotland, especially the islands, so special! God bless you both!
