AONACH EAGACH RIDGE: Facing fear with my first solo scramble

  • I have taken giant leap out of my comfort zone and tackled the mainland UKs longest, narrowest (and reputed to be the most difficult!) ridge .......alone! 💪
    The Aonach Eagach Ridge has been a foe of mine for many years and I never believed I'd ever do it - let alone do it by myself! Up until this year I'd never even been on a hill walk by myself. 😯
    I faced so many fears with this one but the rewards, as always, were plentiful - increased confidence in myself, a sense of peace and calm in knowing that my fears do not control me and of course, witness to some of the most spectacular views in the world!!
    When we start to face our fears and take those steps to get out of our comfort zone, we really begin to discover who we were meant to be. This is me in all of my terrified, excited, fearful, and wonderous glory.
    Who would you be if you faced your fears??

    Many years ago after finishing the ridge walk and staying the night at the Red Squirrel, I was standing when a helicopter appeared from the ridge. A lady from the camp site told us there had been a rescue call on to the ridge. She went on to tell us if the helicopter rushed away from the scene, the injured party was still alive. Leaving us with the obvious thought !! Now in my mid eighties, I will only pass through The Glen and think of yesteryear, having first been up Bidean in 1948. Thanks for the visit to the rifge

      Hi Gloria, thank you so much for taking the time to comment and tell me a bit about your experience of this incredible ridge. It must have been very different in those days. I expect the hills themselves are little changed but attitudes have come a long way. I doubt there were very many women up in the hills in those days. It’s women like you that have inspired the rest of us, and for me personally you have instilled a “why can’t I?” attitude. It is an honour indeed to meet you.

    I agree with everything you say about this ridge! I did it around 1981 I think. I was about 27 Y/O and in the RAF. We camped in a camp site near the Clachaige Inn. Next day, the ridge. Having climbed to the 1st peak, my friends went ahead, and then the 1st descent which seemed to disappear into nothingness :-) I didn't find the going ups as bad but the descents put the willies up me! . Great video and good explanations. I think we completed the route via the Pap of Glencoe.

      @FarForFiona  Год назад

      Thank you! Yes the downs were new to me. The only scrambling I’d done before was the Curved Ridge and that’s all ups! This was easier than that in some ways but more difficult because I was on my own so I needed a bit more mental strength to get through it!

      I think anyone that's tackled this ridge, whether alone or with others is deserving of a big congratulations. Being with others just gives you a bit more confidence but you've still got to make all the moves yourself! Could a 30 year anniversary visit be on the cards? 😀

      It's tempting, but I think any attempt at a re-enactment would end up involving helicopters and a ticking off from Lochaber Mountain Rescue. I'll settle for trembling at the end of the ridge watching more adventurous souls do the daring stuff. It's just struck me that you did all this while filming as well, so award yourself an extra cocoanut!

There are a lot of people talking about how difficult it is but when you’re there and on it, you just get your scrambling head on and you get through it. It’s incredible. Don’t let the videos put you off, it’s difficult to get the true perspective with a camera and some angles make it look worse than it actually was.
