Autumn Life in Japan's Countryside
Join us for another cozy autumn weekend in the countryside of Japan. Aimee wanted to make an apple pie with local ingredients from Nagano prefecture, and Roy wanted to make the classic Japanese comfort food "nabe" (or hotpot) for dinner. Gather around the kotatsu with us, and see how we're progressing with our new home in the Japanese countryside.

Autumn in Japan's Scenic North - Hot Springs, Fall Colors & Hiking
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.21 день назад
Northern Japan (Tohoku) is a treasure trove of hidden gems so as the fall/autumn season rolled around, we rushed up north to meet the seasonal change and admire the beautiful outdoor spots Akita prefecture has to offer. We hiked the easily accessible Akita-Komagatake for volcanic autumn views, as well as Dakigaeri Gorge for some GORGE-ous views (excuse the pun), ate delicious local food, remini...
Magical 3hr Hike in Japan's Northern Alps - Mt. Norikura Day Hike
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Norikura is undoubtedly the BEST way to surpass the clouds, and hike up into the 3000m altitude threshold within Japan. The reason for it's popularity is because of the bus system that takes you straight to the top of the mountain range, costing 4000yen per person for a round trip. Once at the top, you can do a beginner-friendly 3hr return hike to the peak, and take in some incredible views spa...
Hiking Japan's Forgotten Pilgrimage Trail
Просмотров 2 тыс.Месяц назад
Within a day trip of Tokyo lies Chichibu. Rich with scenic views and history, it has a number of temples - which together with those on the Saigoku and Bando pilgrimage routes - form one long trail across Japan. It was said that back in the pilgrimage peak of the early 1800s, somewhere between 20,000 - 30,000 pilgrims were recorded passing along the Chichibu trail in one day. Now an almost-forg...

Hiking a Volcano in Japan’s Northern Alps - UNREAL Day Hike in Kamikochi

Mount Yake (or Yakedake), an active volcano, looms over the Kamikochi valley, and if you hike to it's summit, you can get extraordinary views of the mountain range and valley below. We did our hike along the Shin-Nakanoyu trail, which can be accessed via car. Mt. Yake is especially great as it's one of the few mountains you can do as a day hike in the Northern Alps. //COME SAY HI! Patreon (free...
An UNDERRATED Time to Visit Japan? - Summer Camping in Japan's Countryside

This is how we beat the summer heat, by escaping the sweltering city, going to the countryside and enjoying swimming & stand up paddle boarding on arguably one of Japan's bluest & most amazing rivers! We also wanted to go back and check in on Sekizenkan, the place that inspired the bathhouse in Spirited Away to see what it looks like in summer. In Roy's opinion, nothing beats the vibrant green ...

Ngl it took like 30+mins but still fun!
A very nice and cozy upload! The nabe looks very good, too. By the way, you need a table top for your kotatsu! Any plans for December?
Yes, we do! We had to search for a tabletop separately that would fit our table size but we think we've found one now, so it's on it's way! We'll be spending most of December back home in Australia, catching up with family 😊
This is super helpful! I’m going in May, would the alpine hikes still be under snow? Any better bets for that time of year?
Nice! Anything 2,000m and under is usually okay in May. We did both Mt. Daisen in this video and Mt. Iizuna in another video (ruclips.net/video/7YpYJy63n2o/видео.html) at the start of May. They both had a little bit of snow around the top but nothing that required extra equipment like crampons.
i am indian , your all videos see , really nice , can talk with you mobile call , waiting your reply
So cozy!! I am jealous...
Is it not cozy where you are? Sending cozy vibes your wayyy! 🤗
Thank you for taking us on such an incredibly beautiful and amazing journey! I’m dreaming of visiting there myself someday.
You're absolutely welcome, we're glad you enjoyed the journey. We're editing another autumn adventure as we speak, so hang-tight for that! Also, hell yeah! Make it happen! If you want to visit and say it like that, I'm sure you'll make it here one day!
I’ve heard that a kotatsu is a dangerously cozy heating device. Once you’re in, you’ll never want to get out-even if you really need to use the bathroom, you’ll end up holding it until the absolute last minute! Terrifyingly cozy, isn’t it?!😆Btw, the way you live there must be an inspiration for those who dream of one day moving to this safe, clean, and beautifully respectful country.
What you've heard is certainly right! We're typing this now whilst trapped by the warmth, and I don't see us moving for another few hours 😂 I'm glad to hear you enjoy seeing the way we live! Honestly, we quite often have moments of clarity where we really think "Ahh, this is life at it's best!" 🥰 Thank you for watching and your lovely comment!
If you still have any apples left look up the recipe for apfelkuchen (German apple cake), perfect for oven baking :)
Oh my, that looks like an absolute treat! We'll have to give that one a shot and hand out some slices to the local community for the German-X-Nagano crossover they didn't know they needed! Thanks for sharing that with us :D
Love your videos! Can’t believe you don’t have more viewers. They are definitely missing out. 😊
Ahahaha 😅 Thank you so much, that's so lovely! We'll just keep posting our videos and hopefully over time they should make their way to more lovely people such as yourself. 😊
6:19 Please invite me! 😄👍 The apple pie looks great!
KEN! You can come and hang (and eat apple pie) ANYTIME you like! We're waiting for ya! 🤗
Lovely to see how you keep warm as the cold weather sets in - was heartwarming for us too! Reminds me of when I first moved to Japan in the ‘80’s and we didn’t have an oven for awhile. I taught myself to make apple crumble using the toaster oven, by first stewing the apple, sugar and spices on the stovetop then making ‘the crumble” out of muesli, sugar, butter and cinnamon and putting whole thing in the toaster oven, to brown on top. Always extra delicious when you make it yourself! Thank you for sharing!
Oooh! I was saying to Aimee "Why don't we go the FULL length and make an apple crumble?" and she concluded it might be better to start off with just the pie 😅 Wahh, moving to Japan and not having an oven for a while? It's like... we're living the same life! (Then again life in Japan in the 80's would've been a whooooole different world I bet!) As always, thank you for watching and commenting 🤗
Thank you for sharing your video. Do you have any suggestions for room shares in the country?
Hmm, in the smaller name countryside places I think room shares are quite rare (I did a Google for roomshares in Nagano in both English and Japanese and it's next to non-existent). In bigger cities it's super easy with the big name companies like Oakhouse, Sakura House, Leopalace etc. Some of the previously mentioned companies have share houses out in places like Fussa, Narita etc which are pretty countryside, so that could be a solid option! Oh! Also potentially another option is Workaways/WWOOF which can get you into some DEEP countryside (and staying with wonderful families) for long term stays. We have a video on that on our channel here: ruclips.net/video/S364B1zenHc/видео.html if you're interested. Thank you for watching!
Loved this vlog. That view is unreal!!
Yay! We're glad you liked it! The views sure are spectacular here 🥰 Thank you so much for watching 🤗
I’ll head over and finish up that pie!!!! Looks great. Good job!
Anytime you visit we'll guarantee you a big old slab of Nagano apple pie! 😁
Blind baking the base first can help with it not being soggy. Excited to see Saku through the seasons
"Blind baking"? 😳. Oh no, another word I've (Aimee) have never heard of. We we're actually just thinking about baking another pie, so we'll have to give this a shot! Thanks for watching and the super advice! 🤗
@RoyandAimee Haha no problem, hours of watching bake off have to be worthwhile! Hope the pie goes well, the first one looked delicious
I love to snooze under a kotatsu on a cold day. Please spend the same happy time together in the kotatsu.
A fellow kotatsu lover! Yay! We sure will - thank you for watching and commenting! 🤗
Is anyone else enjoying a wonderful autumn/fall where you are? If you need some extra cozy vibes, join us around the kotatsu and have a slice of apple pie! 🥧 Also we hope to see you over on Patreon for more behind-the-scenes updates and info on traveling in countryside Japan! 🤗
I am planning to go to Fujiyama Twin Terrace next year in February. Do you know the name of the car park which is closest to the viewing deck?🙏Thank you in advance.👌
Hi there! We used this car park: maps.app.goo.gl/ZG51wprr6KdfA9zH8 From there, it's about a 1 hour walk up to the viewing deck 😊
Thank you guys! this is so useful to know…I will be staying for a month in Gifu so i’m definitely looking forward to participating in the dance festival in September! 😃🥰
Oh my gosh! I'm so excited for you! We didn't make a video about it, but we went again this summer, and danced for hours and then spent the next day enjoying the sights. I can say with 100% confidence that Gujo is my (Roy's) #1 favorite spot in all of Japan. My only regret is that we didn't take swimmers and join the locals jumping off the rocks into the cool river on a stinking hot summers day!
Hi guys I hope you’re both well? I’m a little late watching this latest episode but well worth catching up on it. What a great walk that looked to be, the colours were absolutely beautiful and I also rather liked the mist and clouds rolling in, gave it a more dramatic feel to the area. The onsen looks like a stunning place to visit, as I’ve mentioned to you both before I love that this tradition is upheld in Japan, it seems like the perfect way to round out day hiking/walking. The gorge looks to also be an interesting and beautiful place to explore. I sometimes forget just how big Japan is as a country so seeing that the autumn colours weren’t turning there was a good reminder. I’ve been out recently (mid last week) to visit the Major Oak at Sherwood Forest, of Robin Hood fame, I’m quite fortunate that it’s only about 10 miles away and we had perfect weather for a leisurely walk through the forest. Slightly different weather here today as we’ve had a good covering of snow ❄️ I’ve been out walking in my local area this morning and the the last of the autumn colours look stunning with snow all over. 😊 I loved the little roadside shop and honestly box, I still see similar stands regularly around the my village and the other villages local to me. Often it’s fresh eggs and seasonal fruits and vegetables, can’t beat home grown food and always great to support a local cause too. As usual I’ve written about a book’s worth for a comment lol 😂 as ever your camera and drone shots really make us feel like we’re able to enjoy the areas so well. The little details about the history are very welcome too. Thank you for sharing your latest experience and this excellent video with everyone. Best wishes and safe travels to both of you and your families. 🏴🇦🇺🇯🇵💙😊🍂
Hello! Good to hear from you! Sounds like you've been quite busy. The Major Oak is such an interesting place. Anyone you talk know of Robin Hoods tales, it's so awesome that something so notorious is within a trip's distance from yourself. Honestly, we're maybe 2 weeks behind on our uploads (editing always takes a while) so we're starting to get some smatterings of snow amongst the fading autumn colors here too! And I'm so glad to hear you get little honesty stands where you are as well. It's such a cute little system, and as you say, supporting the locals beats out paying to the big-corps any day of the week! Very cool that it's a universal thing. As always thank you for watching and your high praise! 🙌
Hello! May i know which date was this video recorded? Was it during summer?
Hey there, thanks for watching! This was filmed during mid-May this year. The views during summer should mostly be the same, just way hotter! 😅
D+1 coming back from Japan and already thinking for next year trip 😅
Although I live in Japan , I never heard of this place before , I even don’t know where it is.
Right? It’s a pretty low key spot! Then again, pretty recently Chris Broad did a segment on this area, so it might gather more of a name for itself from now? I guess we’ll see!
I've never been to Akita and the 東北 area in Japan! Looks like the 東北 area is awesome! Thanks for showing me Roy and Aimee!🥰👍 Ah, now I want to go there!!!😄
Ken! You must go one day! It’s absolutely stunning :) Thanks for watching! 🤗
hello guys, how to get from Bessho to Ueda? by bus?
Hello! You can get there via a 30 minute train from Ueda Station to Bessho Onsen Station. Just make sure to plan ahead a little as the train only comes every ~40 mins to 1 hour.
What a lovely trip to amazing Tohoku. City slickers likely do not understand how much more comfortable it can be to get off of an exposed mountain peak. We stayed at Tae no Yu Onsen in the Nyuto area 5 years ago during winter. There was one outdoor medium sized mixed bathing tub that was a great experience with Japanese, visitors from Hong Kong and my wife and I. I wonder if you had a chance to enjoy delicious Akita sake Yuki no Bosha or another local craft sake on your trip. Oh, you closed out with a side trip to Iwate! Hiraizumi is an amazing historic town to visit and Hanamaki Onsen is located nearby. Tohoku delivers.
Wowee! I can feel the passion for & expertise of the Tohoku area from here! It sounds like you've had such amazing experiences there! We didn't tick of any sake tasting off, so we'll definitely have to keep Yuki no Bosha on our list for the next time we venture up there! Just hearing your stories makes me want to go back right away! Thank you so much for watching & sharing your Tohoku knowledge!
You two certainly know where to visit in Japan! Even though I have not been to Akita, I have heard so much about the prefecture and its amazing places. By the way, did you know that there are mummies at Chusonji-temple? Looking forward to more autumn uploads!
Hehe 🤭 We can definitely appreciate that it's a slightly hard place to get to (even for us living here!) but it's certainly worth the trip one day! Oooooh - mummies? We heard the remains of the past leaders are buried there. I guess that is mummies in a sense, isn't it! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🤗
Great info
Thank you for watching! We hope it helps you plan your future campervan adventures! 😊
Dakigaeri gorge, that is indeed a very interesting name, thanks for that (...and it's just 3 km as the crow flies from the Akita Shinkansen line!... it blows my mind that they even considered crossing those mountains with the shinkansen, let alone actually achieve it...) Tohoku's Ōu-sanmyaku mountains in autumn are a natural wonderland. Thanks for taking us along, it's food for the soul ☺
@14:00 This view looked awfully familiar (even tough I haven't ventured north of Nikko. Yet), and then I remembered: this was one of Hasui's favourite subjects (tinyurl: 2s3adszh)
Yeah! People always talk about Japan living in 2050 - whilst that's totally the opposite in their digital sphere & office work culture, their public infrastructure boggles my mind. "A whole mountain range blocks our way? Nah, we'll just drill through it". "An ocean separates two main islands? Nah, we'll make a tunnel under it". Thank you so much for watching and your comment, we're glad we could scratch that itch for some Japan content!
Japan is very clean and beautiful
Absolutely agree! 😊
That was lovely aim and Roy. Will have to go up north. 👍
Wow, I am blown away by this video! Breathtaking scenery my friend! Absolutely stunning work, Japan is spectacular!
🥹 Thank you so much! Honestly, it's not too hard to make a video when the landscape & views do all the hard work! 😅
Thank you for showing me (us) the beautiful mountain scenery where the leaves are starting to change color. The mountain fog (clouds) obstruct the view, but on the other hand, they create a mysterious atmosphere.
Hahah! We like to say that too! It's not cloudy, it's ☁️ mysterious ☁️ Haha! Thank you for watching & commenting 🤗
Gorgeous scenery. We travelled through Akita and the rest of Tohoku in November 2019. Your vlog brought back lots of happy memories for us. We also stayed with the Yamaouchi’s as well. Was an incredible experience! Thank you for sharing!
Yay! I'm so glad we could bring back the happy memories from your Tohoku trip! And you stayed with the Yamauchi's too? What a cooncidence! (Also your trip was right around the time we stayed with them too!) They honestly deserve every bit of patronage possible, they're so lovely! Thank you so much for watching & commenting! 🤗
Yes, I think we were there just before you as we didn’t see your photo up in their genkan, but you would have seen ours!
@@katecobb9278 yes that’s right! I’d forgotten everyone’s photos were up there. That makes me want to go back and see them now haha.
Ahhhh the views *chefs kiss*, the culture *mwuah*, the AUTUMN COLORS!!! 😍 Northern Japan really had it all in this video! 🍂 Looking forward to seeing you over on our Patreon for more of a behind-the-scenes touch to Roy and Aimee!

My dream life 🥹🥹🥺😩
Oh I like the look of that climb aim. Easier than my latest.
Haha you're well prepared to do something like this 💪
hai Roy and Aimee... thank you so much for the video! It encourages me to try this trail. I am wondering is it ideal to stay overnight as I am planning to go to Nagano from Nagoya with the big luggage and all? I am going full with public transports. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment! Hmm, we would say yes it's a good idea to stay overnight in that area considering you're traveling via public transport with big luggage. That in itself can be exhausting and time consuming, and this area is certainly well worth slowing down the pace of your trip just so you can relax and take in all of the beauty of this area! Hope that helps!
That's guys what luxury actually means
Are you even hiking when you use a ropeway? Asahidake is a clear S, because you kinda have to stay at one of the Hotels near the ropeway and enjoy the fresh onsen coming right from the mountain. My beard froze on the top, in August. It was amazing.
Yeah I've definitely had those thoughts about using a ropeway before but they get you to some beautiful views without all the tiring walking through the forest haha. Asahidake sure is a fantastic hike! Minus the accessibility, it's deffs S tier :)
Hi guys I hope you’re both well and have been enjoying autumn 🍂? Congratulations 🥳 on your Wedding Anniversary, thank you for sharing your day with everyone and I wish you both many more happy years to come. Congratulations 🎉 for also ‘bagging’ your 19th of the 100 too. Hiking/walking has become such an important part of my life again in the last year or so and has made such a positive impact especially for my mental health. Taking time to really appreciate the small things are often the most important things, it’s nice to slow down every so often to enjoy them. Your passion for hiking always shines through during your videos, it’s great to have more people such as yourselves positively promoting walking and providing useful advice and encouraging others to get out and explore more of what Japan has to offer, especially lovely to hear that a couple took time to say hello to you too 😊 Glad to see that the weather lifted for you during your walk, the camera shots as always were amazing, such a beautiful place to explore. I had a similar experience last week out in the Peak District with the weather, I’d gone out for a cycle ride on the Tissington Trail with a small group of friends from my Veterans group. It was very misty when we started in the early morning but it cleared up as the day progressed. I’m not afraid to admit that the 26 miles we rode had me aching for a couple of days lol 😂 but loved getting out and enjoying the autumn weather is really worth it. Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone, I’m really looking forward to seeing more of what autumn has to offer for you. Best wishes to the two of you and your families. Have a great weekend guys. 🏴🇦🇺🇯🇵🍂😊
Hello! We’re both well, thank you! We’ve been out and about trying to soak up all the crisp autumn days. Although autumn has come a little late here to Japan after a very hot summer so it’s only just now turning particularly chilly 🥶 Thank you so much for the congratulations on our anniversary and the hike ☺️ Really glad to hear that getting out and walking has had such a positive impact for you. Couldn’t agree more that it can be so good to just enjoy a slower pace and is great for your mental health. Haha after that many miles on the bike, I’m not surprised you were a little sore 😆 I reckon I’d be the exact same haha. It’s good to hear you had nice weather in the end though! Hope you’ve been having a lovely weekend and thank you so much for watching! 😊🍂🍁
@ good afternoon guys thank you for taking time out of your day to say hi, it’s always genuinely appreciated 😊 My weekend has been very nice thank you, the weather has been quite mild here (averaging around 10 degrees C) but there does seem to be a chill in the air today, might need to dig out the woolly hat soon 😊 Wishing you both a great week ahead and safe travels if you’re out and about 🏴🇦🇺🇯🇵😊👍
Greeeeeeattt video! Thanks for sharing. 1 question tho. What time of year is this documentation took place? Going there next week and trying to figure out how thick should i bring my clothes. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and your lovely comment! This was filmed on the first week of December. Hope this helps!
This place looks so good!
It really was so beautiful! 🥹 Thank you for watching!
Great content, folks. Love your stuff. Im going to japan next march. I know its not the Best time of the year nature-wise. But i plan to go to some more isolated places, like shirakawago, nakasendo trail and stuff. And id like to take my drone (sub250g) for some aerial shots. I noticed you guys shoot a lot of takes from drone. Do you know of a website where i can read a little about drones in japan nowadays? How strict is the current regulations?
Hello! Thanks so much for the lovely comment 😊 You can read a bit about drones here: www.mlit.go.jp/en/koku/uas.html The main things are, you need to register your drone and you can't fly it above 150m, close to people or buildings and over densly populated areas (ie. big cities like Tokyo etc.). When we're at a busy mountain peak or town, we'll usually walk far away from the crowds so we're not disturbing anyone and take off there. So far we haven't had any issues doing that. Just a heads up that many tourist attractions have no drone signs. I can't remember exactly but Shirakawago may have even had one. You'll definitely see them around temples and castles. But for the Nakasendo, there should be some good locations to put your drone up. Hope that helps! 😊
@@RoyandAimee i see. Thanks a lot for the website and recommendations. I was afraid cuz i saw some ppl saying that there are heavy fines and that u can even go to prison for flying in no-fly zones like temples and stuff. Obviously airports and big cities are a big no-no. Thanks again!
Another vicarious and virtual trip to Japan for me (I am a Japanese national living in eastern Canada). When my younger brother was in high school in Aichi, he was a member of mountaineering club and went to Norikura. Even today he talks about the mountain. Do you feel out of breath when you walk fast up there (due to a 3000 plus meter altitude)? I enjoyed this upload because of your unassuming personalities and contents.
Woah that's a very international background! And I can't believe the lasting impression this mountain has left on your brother! Ahhh - y'know, I never thought about being out of breath because of altitude. Now that you mention it, that could be a thing. Although we both felt very healthy during the entirety of the hike - towards the end I think I was just yapping at the camera too much and forgot to breathe! 😂 Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment!
Thank you for sharing your lives with us. We love Japan and are planning our 4th trip. What a wonderful mountain Mt Norikura is 🇦🇺👏
Thank you for watching and your lovely comment! We love this wonderful country and can't get enough of sharing it with everyone! 4 trips is an amazing feat - and don't stop there! There's many, many vistas and sights waiting for you! 🤗 Out of curiosity, from your 4 trips what's been your most favorite place/story to tell about?
Happy Anniversary kids 🎉❤
Yay! Thank you so much! 🎉
Best couple to watch in RUclips.. 🥰
❤️❤️❤️! I wouldn't say that at all, but thank you so much for making our day with this comment! 🥰
I climbed Mt. Norikura once when I was young. I don't remember much about it, but I do recall the pond at the base of the climb and the shrine at the top. It's a fond memory.
How nice that you've got this as a fond memory, even remembering it from a young age! I'm so glad to hear that! We can absolutely understand why, because - well, it's just so fantastic isn't it!? I hope we'll forever remember this hike in the same way! ☺️
