  • Matsumoto City in Nagano, Japan - brimming with culture & history, holds an illumination event during the entire winter season. This unique projection mapping lights up Matsumoto Castle in stunning colors and patterns, making it a must-see show!
Fortunately, whilst we were there we had the opportunity to also see the annual ice sculpting competition, which was a first for us. Seeing the craft firsthand was truly eye opening, and if given the opportunity, we'd highly recommend it!
We also tried to see the Japanese Alps from one of Japans best viewpoints via the Shinhotaka ropeway, but alas, the clouds got in the way! Sometimes these things can't be helped with winter travel.

Hello! While the weather in the alps sure wasn't on our side, Matsumoto's winter festival really turned it up with peak winter vibes ❄
It's hard to say what was more impressive - the castle or the ice scultpures!

Hi guys I hope you’re both well? The castle is stunning both at night and during the day, I’d love to see what it’s like inside especially as it’s never had to be re-built.
We’re quite fortunate that we still have a good number of castles still standing here in England and further across the UK, one being a few miles from me. The architecture of them and especially the Japanese ones really fascinated me.
The cable car 🚠 looked a good ride and shame about your view on the day you got there, can’t beat some warming food and drink though, like many places I imagine it’s beautiful scenery in all seasons.
I couldn’t choose a favourite from the the ice sculptures, they were all so amazing.
Great to see that you’re enjoying travelling around in the snow conditions, I imagine your confidence is getting stronger the more you drive. We had a snow day here which as always caused some disruption but it had disappeared the next morning due to higher temperatures and rain overnight.
Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone, I really enjoyed it. Safe travels and best wishes to you both 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇺🇯🇵😊

Hello! We’re both well 😊 Hope you’re doing well too!
Oh yes we’ve actually been inside Matsumoto Castle twice and it’s a great experience. Lots of really steep stairs 😅
It’d be interesting to see how it differs from castles in the UK. We’ve heard a lot of the castles in England keep the rooms all done up with furniture, while in Japan, the castles are usually fairly empty with just some displays of armor and weapons. That’s very cool that one is so close to you!
Yes we’re definitely getting more confident with driving in the snow. Haha that sounds like a snow day we had in Tokyo recently. It had mostly turned to mush by the next day.
Thank you as always for your lovely comment! 😊

@@RoyandAimee hi guys thank you so much for the lovely reply. I’m glad to hear that it’s interesting to visit inside the castle.
Yes your right, most of the historical buildings such as castles, stately homes, etc that are open are kept in keeping with their original time period as much as possible. The one local to me is Bolsover Castle, I’m looking at going to visit in the coming weeks too which will be really interesting.
Have a great weekend guys 😊

Oh wow! Had a quick google of Bolsover Castle and it looks very grand! It's so cool that there's pieces of history like this so close to you. We'd love to visit the UK one day!
Have a lovely weekend as well! 😊

@@RoyandAimee English Heritage do an excellent job of maintaining the properties they have under their care, the National Trust in both England and Scotland also do a great job too, they manage a lot more parkland areas though. Quite a number of the grand houses are still privately owned, often by the same family for many generations and open their houses and gardens up (for a fee) to the public.
I’m also about 45 minutes drive from the Peak District which is absolutely stunning, I’ve been out walking there quite often recently and due to go out again very soon. Sherwood Forest, of Robin Hood fame, is also very close to me, I’m quite fortunate living in my area of England having so much variety on my doorstep and I’ve been trying to take advantage of the good weather and get out as much as possible.
I do seem to find that a lot of travellers/visitors to the England and UK do the usual ‘London’ things and then might think there’s not much more to see. The North of England has so much to offer, especially for outdoor activities like walking, climbing, cycling, etc.
If you ever find yourselves coming over to England/UK you will be made most welcome. Thank you again for the lovely reply, enjoy the rest of your weekend guys.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! It's wonderful to hear more about England. We'd never heard of the Peak District before but just looked it up and the pictures make it look stunning! That's so great that you have such a beautiful area so close by. We've also heard the Lake District further north is quite lovely too.
We usually prefer travelling in the countryside rather than cities so the north of England is definitely on our list. Would love to do some hiking there and perhaps just rent a car and drive around. Thank you so much for sharing about your neck of the woods!

Great video. I was there last week, why does everyone lift their windshield wipers like you did?

    • @RoyandAimee
      @RoyandAimee  5 месяцев назад +2

Thank you! Ooh awesome! Did you have a chance to see the illumination? The lifting of the windshield wipers is to prevent them getting frozen to the windscreen. Honestly, we’re no experts with driving in the snow so we just lift them up if we see other people doing it 😅
