  • We have big plans for winter, and want to explore all the wonderful aspects of this season in Japan. From winter festivals and winter hikes, to snowboarding and steamy bowls of ramen. This is our first winter season with our brand new (to us) van, and we've had to make a few adjustments in order to live the winter van life. Travel with us to the snowy town of Yuzawa on our first test run, (and near disaster) and see how it all pans out!

Having an extra container of windscreen washer in the vehicle, during the winter time, is essential, IMO.

Oh my gosh- the scenery was stunning. I enjoyed the vlog very much. Thank you for sharing your trip with us.
Apart from what has already been mentioned- the hot packs that you can put in your pockets and on your clothes etc. might come in handy?

Thank you so much for watching! Oh that’s such a good idea, we’ll go buy a pack of them and have them on stand-by!!

Hiya guys I hope you’re both well? Really enjoyed the video, it really was quite the difference going from one side of the mountain range to the other via that tunnel, it’s stunning scenery.
I understand your concerns driving in snowy conditions, it took me a couple of journeys to get more comfortable with it. Japan does appear very well prepared for the winter conditions in areas where it snows regularly, I go steady and drive to the current road conditions and leave extra room than usual between the vehicle in front of me.
Having the basic safe equipment like first aid kit, fire extinguisher, breakdown gear (jump leads, etc), extra blankets, torches, extra food, hot drink items and water and a small gas stove (camping type) with spare gas canisters and cooking utensils are a must for any vehicle. I would rather have it and never need it than be stuck without it.
Hot water bottles are very good for warming up your bed and also for getting around your core areas if your feeling cold too.
I think you will have probably thought of most of what I’ve listed but hopefully it’s helpful for anyone else as well.
Looking forward to seeing all the interesting places you’re going to be visiting. Thank you for sharing this brilliant video with everyone. Safe travels and best wishes to you both 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇺🇯🇵😊

Hello! Genki as ever, and we hope you are too! Thank you for watching 😊
Ohh that’s a great checklist of prep items, let’s see, I think we’re just missing the extra blankets, drink and food. Actually now that you bring it up, maybe we’ll get some “emergency cup ramen”.
We were just watching the news and there’s already been a highway ‘stuck’ incident where people have been stuck for almost 10 hours due to the snow. 🥶
That being said, I think we’ll do as you say, drive slow and safely and stock up on those items.
Stay tuned for more winter adventures!

Haha it’s certainly not something we would do without a diesel heater, it’s too cold! 🥶 That’s a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion 😊

I’m heading over to Niigata soon and definitely stopping in to that sake tasting place on the way!
The issue with your diesel heater could have been due to the diesel in the lines “freezing” (diesel doesn’t exactly freeze, it turns to jelly)
My diesel heater runs off my main tank and in winter I have to add an antifreeze to the tank to stop the diesel from freezing.

Oh my god! That could just be it! Thank you so much for sharing that idea. If it happens one more time, that’s the first thing we’ll be trying, I reckon!
Oh man! I hope you enjoy the sake tasting area. We’ve been there once before, all the unique flavours are so interesting! Goes great with an oversized onigiri 😉
