  • Kyoto's overtourism problem can make travel in the city suffocating and unenjoyable. Hiring a bicycle (or an e-bike) and going slightly off the beaten track is definitely a fantastic way to soak in all the traditional architecture and culture Kyoto has to offer, without the crowds!

We recently visited Kyoto and chose to do an Airbnb "experience" bike tour and it was my favorite day/experience by far! I can see from your video how easy and fun it would be to rent them on our own (without a tour), however, I did not want to deal with the navigation and such so the guided tour was SUPER relaxing for us! Since we don't live in Japan and only visited for a brief time I would say it's worth it. I was surprised at how many parts of Kyoto were not crowded - we skipped most of the "most popular" and had a thoroughly enjoyable trip. There are endless sights in Kyoto. Anyway - I've watched most of your videos and love them so much. You two are gems - thanks for bringing us along your adventures through Japan! Cheers from San Diego, CA!

That sounds like an equally fantastic experience! We should actually do some AirBnB experiences now that you mention it 🤔Yes, isn’t it amazing how different of a Kyoto experience you can have it you get away from the crowds!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting - and wishing you a safe and enjoyable New Years 🥳

We did this in our first day in Kyoto, it was a sunday (Dec 3rd) and I was so scared that it would be a lot of people everywhere... But it was actually quite nice! Not that crowded and even Eikando Temple was bearable like you said. We did it by bus and on foot though, I can't ride a bike 😅... Your video made me think back on that day and I think I was one of the best days of our trip! Thank you 😊

Thank you for sharing your story! I’m glad you got to enjoy the beautiful Eikando Temple without the crowds :)
Well, if you can’t ride a bike, maybe the next option can be a Rickshaw ;) (They’re pretty expensive though, so we haven’t ridden one yet 😯)

Thanks for your video and your smiles. For Kyoto, I recommend late May, early June, or tour sites after sunset (check what is open after sunset). In your video, I liked the SpongeBob imagination clip after Roy explained how he imagines life inside each of the houses along the river, and I liked how Aimee's long explanation on the van's battery issue was transmogrified by time travel compression. 😀

Wow! Sunset tours in summer sounds like a great idea for seeing it all in a beautiful way. Thanks for sharing such a creative idea! Haha, we’re glad you enjoyed the editing. It’s a miracle we contained Aimee’s rambling to just a few seconds 😂
      Thanks for watching 🤗

Hi guys, first and foremost Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both 🥳 I hope you’re both well and have enjoyed the festive season?
This is a brilliant video, I couldn’t agree with you more about sightseeing using a bike, you’re getting exercise and also able to reach more places too.
This is why I love the autumn months so much, the colours were absolutely beautiful, you really showed off autumn 🍂 at its very finest 😊
Really great to see you made a positive out of something that had affected the van, definitely well worth the trip there.
Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone and also for all the great content you’ve shared this year and for taking time out of your busy lives to share messages too, it’s been really interesting seeing different parts of Japan that aren’t usually seen so much. Wishing the two of you and your families all the very best for 2024, safe travels and best wishes 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇺🇯🇵

Merry Christmas and happy new year to yourself and your folks too! We’ve taken a few weeks to pop back to Australia to spend time with family (our first Australian Christmas in 4 years 😮)
It’s very different here to the Autumn vibes in the video. But we’re very happy to have been able to share it with everyone!
We really wanted to try and put a Roy and Aimee twist on the Kyoto travel experience by getting outdoors and enjoying the nature 🍂 and it was such a fun experience! Especially meeting the lovey Obaa-chan in the yukata store, that’s what life in Japan is really about for us.
Again, thank you for watching and commenting in 2023, wishing you healthiness and happiness & kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu ✌🏻

It’s really great to hear that you’ve been home and had your first Australian Christmas in such a long time and seen family and friends.
The personal touches that you put into your videos always shines through and I genuinely hope more and more people get to watch and enjoy your content during 2024. Safe travels and best wishes to you and your families and friends. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇺🇯🇵😊

What are the expectations for parking your bike around town to visit sites? Are their no-nos? How do you get those parking passes?

    • @RoyandAimee
      @RoyandAimee  5 месяцев назад

Hi there! We were told by the bike rental company that Kyoto city can be fairly strict about not parking randomly on the sidewalk. At a lot of temple and shrine sites, they have free parking lots. For the paid city lots, you can buy a pass at the first one you visit and then just show it at each parking lot after that. For places like the cafe we visited, we just asked when we arrived where we could park our bikes and they let us know 😊

That thing you ate was Sato Imo. It’s sticky and slimy. I don’t mind it too much but it’s in a lot of Japanese dishes!

Thank you so much for watching as well as dropping a lovely comment!
We arrived in Japan and spent 1.5yrs here on a Working Holiday visa, during that time we mostly taught English online via iTalki (just for extra cash) and travelled in rental camper vans as much as we could. Once that visa finished we decided to stay in Japan, so we both switched to working visas. Roy landed a job as a software engineer and Aimee went for an English teaching school, but later became the video producer over on Tokyo Cheapo, full time!

@@RoyandAimee oh wow. That's great. Thanks for the response. I'm currently studying software engineering so hopefully I can land a job in Japan once I graduate. I lived in shizuoka for a year when I was in the military and have always wanted to go back to Japan but thought it was impossible to get a job besides teaching English. Thanks for giving me hope 🙏 love your laid back style of making videos. You gained a new subscriber!

It’s possible & we believe you can make it happen!! 🙌🏻 The quality of life here as a software engineer (working at an international company) is great when weighing up income vs living costs + working conditions. Thank you for dropping a sub, you’ve made our day ☺️
