The first piece of machinery after the combine is a hay fork, or a hay spike for picking up round bales. The spike gets stabbed into the face of the bale. They're used to load them on flat beds (semis), and to spread out in cattle pens for bedding.

Always amazed some of this older material survived WW2 scrap drives.

I saw a jayhawk hay stacker in the trees. Some were horse powered, and some were Tractor powered. It was a neat piece of farm history.

That New Holland square bale hay baler my grandfather had one of them when I was a kid the arm that packs the hay would come up and out of the machine when the bail will drop out and it used to scare me to death my grandfather had the first modern hay baler in the South Shore of Massachusetts worn out and bought another one just like it used
