Thanks for dropping by.
This channel isn't entirely sure which direction it'll be taking as it travels its way through parts of Asia with the purpose of, well, just seeing the place and hopefully talking to a few of the people who live there - we'll probably have to eat something along the way as well, I guess.
Most of the content will be simply wandering around the streets of Asian countries giving you my impression of life and hopefully the thoughts of some of the people who live there..
Thanks again for taking the time for stopping by and taking a look at the channel.
Cheers

This is why I love Bali. Padangbai.
Today I walk around Padangbai and answer a question I'm often asked about how I find the accommodation I do when I'm in Bali.
I start my day bargaining with a lady who sells bananas before thinking she didn't seem very happy - then I feel guilty for haggling over a small amount of money.
A warung I've eaten at many times has been rebuilt after a tree fell on it, causing the family to spend five and a half thousand dollars in rebuilding. the ladies tell their story before I have some of their food.
I meet a man with enlarged earlobes and ask him why he chooses to put rings in his ears to make them bigger with his explanation resonating with me.

My honest opinion of Kuta, Lombok. Time to go.

Today is my last day in Kuta, Lombok before catching the ferry back to Bali tomorrow morning so i take one last walk throught town while offering my opinion on who might be best suited visiting here. It's a really fun place to be, isn't it. Thanks, Cherie
Love the people. Keep bringing them.
They're great, aren't they?
Its not Muslim.......that should explain it.
I know a lot of nice friendly Muslim people.
@fiascodagama1 some individuals are fine but when the place is Muslin majority......... it's a different story.
I'm curious if you've lived or traveled for extended periods in Indonesia or another Muslim country. If so, can I ask why or how you've come to this conclusion? What was your personal experience?
When I was travelling SE Asia in the 80s and 90s the Lonely Planet really was a traveller's bible. But it distorted a lot of places. Those that were included hit the jackpot while other equally good places were overlooked. I also heard tales of some of the freelance reviewers expecting kickbacks. The bar for entry is much lower for local businesses now. Just a smart teenage grandson and an internet connection. As you mentioned in another video ride hailing apps are also destroying a lot of tout business models. I'm travelling India at the moment and use Uber all the time, not to actually book a ride, but to get an idea of a fair price when bargaining with tuk-tuks etc. Happy travels, Wayne 😊
Hi Aaron, good to hear from you again. And I agree with everything you said - I'd also heard LP writers were getting slings for promoting some places. For fifteen years or so LP was indeed my bible but eventually I just cut out the maps. :) Hope you're enjoying India!
i watched your lombok didn't get a friendly vid live in darwin will be their in june
Hi Robert. i hope my Kuta, Lombok videos didn't create the idea there are no friendly people there, that's not the case as there there are plenty. It's just different compared it to Bali. I hope you have a great trip in June. cheers.
Wayne, have you seen the gamelan group practising in the back street? Balinese kids are so beautiful. Best wishes.
Hi Marisa. I've heard them and was only thinking yesterday if I hear them again I'll go over and see if I can take a quick video. Kids are indeed a happy and fun bunch. :)
@ o that would be fab! Thanks Wayne.
Ahhh back to smiling friendly people....
It's a very obvious difference isn't it, BM? :)
@@fiascodagama1 Chalk and cheese Wayne 👍
Bali's a very tourist driven island and the cynical part of me thinks the Balinese are friendly as they see us as potential customers, it becomes ingrained in them, however after Wayne's interactions with locals I'm not so sure
@@ausjen In my experience a lot of the shop staff are not Balinese and can be temporary friendly. But once business is done (with Balinese) they will sit and talk or offer a drink. Over the decades I have also made a few friends originally from Java who will sit for hours with me just talking about family and life experience. Maybe the Island of the Gods affects all who journey there. Well maybe not all taxi drivers!🤣
@@ausjen I understand how you might have come to the conclusion the Balinese kindness is money driven, Jen - and believe it's true in certain situations and circumstances. However, I genuinely believe the Balinese at their core are very considerate, kind, fun, and gentle people after being witness at close quarters to how they interact with each other.
Selemat Malam, Wayne. Baik sekali, beautiful harbor city on the east coast of Bali with long ears, turban, wearing man. When I first started traveling to Indonesia, I read "Bill Dalton's Indonesian Handbook" and went out on my own, talking to people in stores, warungs, villages finding good places to stay. The Chinese restaurant owner wearing the Jade pendant in Padangbai you would have been my first contact.
I get the sense we're very similar travelers, Liz. I hope we get the chance to sit down some time over a coffee and share some tales from Indonesia. thanks as always.
Wayne, what was the name of the Warung you were at? Would love to support them when I will be back in Bali in the coming months. Apologies if I missed the name 🙈
Hi Ida. That's really kind of you. The Warung's name is Tepi Segara on the western end-ish of Padangbai waterfront. Cheers.
I avoid anywhere in Asia that attracts bogan Aussies.
Your a very measured man
Quite tall as well. :)
Thanks Wayne! Watching this (and your boat journey back) I can't help but be happy to be back in Bali, feels like coming home!!! 😄 Still, very much looking forward to our first ever Lombok adventure in June - and super excited be be heading back to Bali again next month - it's lovely feeling like I'm there via your regular adventures in the meantime - keep up the great 'work'! 😊🙏

I’m in the big island
Hi Cliff. That book was a bible for many of us for a long time and served us well, didn't it. thanks for dropping by.
They probably don't have them these days, but if I strayed at a good guest house, I would take a handful of business cards and sometimes exchange them with travellers from the other direction. I was travelling to.
The business card idea is a good one. Cheers.

Women are treated like 2nd class citizens in Lombok and they refused to speak to me when I was with my husband. Won't ever go back
We were in Lombok in 2018 and had a great time. I am surprised at the feeling now. We visited the secret Gilis which were a highlight of our trip there, which I now know is limited. Sad how things change over time. Bali is still our favourite after being there 9 times and always traveling the lesser paths travelled.
Hi Sonja. It's great to get away from the main scene for a while, I agree. You're another Bali veteran by the sounds of it. Cheers.
I was there just over a deccade ago. Id hit Ino like i was Alby Mangles, atlas in hand, becconing adventure. I found the people of Lombok as Muslims to be haters and i am certainly not a racist or a biggot. There is a reason why Bali is an Aussie favourite and all the other islands get missed. That said, i loved Mattaram and From memory, Tom and Suzie who owned the place where i stayed with my wife in Kuta, found me a driver and we all hopped in some blokes old ford ranger and followed the said line on the map in my atlas, heading west along the coast, all the way to a spot where i could get over to Gide Gday. It was nothing more than a goat track, about 100ks perhaps at 5 or 10 or 15 ks an hour, it was stinking hot, the fuel tank leaked fumes into the car and it was windows down for 10 minutes, windows up with air con for ten minutes. The poor bugger driving, the concentration over all the ruts and pot holes, it was seriously a goat track, bareley wide enough to fit the car and even smack bang in the middle of ramadam, that drover broke his fast at about the 6 hour mark and smashed down a can of coke. I am glad that i did that though because it doubt it had ever been done like that before and i am sure that Tom and Suzie will remember that day of adventure as well.
After visiting Jakarta several times, and spending a fair amount of effort in learning bahasa, I decided to go to Kuta, Lombok. Found a decent place for 5 nights next month. I really just want to experience local food and culture just as I have done in Jakarta. Taking some guided tours will be on my schedule, but not crazy about renting a motorbike (even as a former racer). Your candid comments are very helpful.
]I think people should visit and experience something different and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The majority of my encounters were good. Thanks for taking the time, Adair.
Gidday Wayne. I've watched a few of your offerings here on Utube and really getting to appreciate your take on things. Down to earth, facts. I do enjoy your verbal interactions in bahasa, as it gives a little indication of where to start with a few of the basics of the everyday. Keep it up and all the best, Cheers
Hey Roar. Really appreciate you taking the time to drop by and say hello. Cheers.
A very respectful but insightful review so thanks. My wife and I have 2 of the next 5 months based around the Amed area. We’ve done a few of the Gili’s and have been pondering some exploring on Lombok. Your subtext mirrors the view of our friends who is permanently based in Amed so an independent 2nd opinion like this was worth its weight in gold. Cheers
Thanks, Kirk. It sounds like you're on a nice trip with five months at your disposal. I hope it's an interesting and enjoyable time for you both. Cheers.
Hi Wayne, really good to see this kind of summary. I understand it is your opinion. I've never been there, and it was very interesting, Thank You. Also, 8k well done, you must be doing something right. 👍
Hi, Ian. Thanks for your ongoing contributions - they're not taken for granted. Cheers.
Beach’s are nice yes, only problem is the dangerously angry street dogs that will attack you from behind. As you experienced. The stray dogs on the beach are very territorial and will attack you no question asked.

Wayne l have been watching your videos for some time and noticed you eat a lot of street food 🤢 not good. Hope you recover soon.
Yes Balinese are truly unique. different culture and outlook.
Fishing industry will destroy the fishing in no time. Just leave it to the locals, not the voracious professionals. Vaccuum clean the ocean.
Looks to be my cup of tea. I much prefer real interactions than fake niceness in touristy areas.
Maybe when you started to make money with the boat they wanted to get a piece of the action. Sounds like a shakedown to me. When you didn't get the message they escalated.
Rent a scooter in Kuta! A comprehensive as well as honest review. Nice one.
Thanks, blue.
Lombok people normally live simple, moderate life with less formality, but they do love and respect people
Very interesting view on the interaction of foreigners with the locals there. I've visited there several times also many other islands in Indonesia including a wonderful visit to Java where the locals were very helpful and nice. Thanks for the video 😊
Thanks, David. Appreciate you taking the time.
And 8k subscribers, respect. As others have said, a balanced and realistic response to the different cultural norms - for all the overdevelopment, bogan tourism and insane traffic, Bali is exceptional in the warmth offered to visitors (though even there, there are occasional instances of lack of grace). Lombok seems typical of the rest of Indonesia, mostly very graceful, warm and welcoming, just not as much as Bali is!
I think that's the point, Kevin. Lombok, (or Southern, Lombok) when compared to somewhere like Bali might come off looking quite poorly but Bali is a huge opponent to be put up against. Thanks for the 8K congratulations.
In Indonesia, the further you get from areas of the religion of peace, the better. Lombok is much more like Malaysia. Westerners often face racism and discrimination. The most warm and friendly places are Bali and parts of East Java, like Yogyakarta.
What rubbish. Do you live in a bubble? Can you speak Indonesian? You have an enormous chip on your shoulder.
Hi Wayne, and many thanks for your thoughtful and respectful videos. I first came to Bali in 1987. I am 75 now so was not a green 18yo, but a green 37yo... Amazingly, it was only a short 1 week package tour, 3 days at Gazebo in Sanur, 2 days at Tjampuan in Ubud, then another 2 days back in Sanur. Foolishly short, but it opened my eyes to a whole other world of which I was ignorant. I remember loving the combined smells of traffic, open drains, burning rubbish, frangipani and incense. Intoxicating! I've since been back many times with different partners and friends, loving every trip. I lost a girlfriend to Bali in'73. She was given a 1 way ticket to London, via Bali (just Kuta then) and the Greek islands, the hippie trail, I guess. That was when the 'pineapple on pizza' debate kicked off. I was outraged that they'd even have pizza in Bali! Long story short, out of money in London, she teamed up with an ex boyfriend and hitched all the way back to Oz via a hostile middle east. Relationship over. So I guess I had to experience Bali for myself. Sure, it's changed over the years, traffic gridlock is horrible, but I can't see myself staying away. Keep on, Wayne, and thanks.
Thanks for the tales, Tony. I think there were a lot of people looking for themselves in '73 and it seems your girlfriend might have been one of them. Cheers.
I think that was a very fair, unbiased review. Warts and all because you cannot hide the facts. Keep doing what you do mate.
Thank so much, Phil. Appreciate it.
Mate thanks for your vids, I am really enjoying them. I been to Kuta Lombok in September was really dry, how was the rain the last week or so? I want to go back to surf soon but not sure on floods and how annoying it is to travel, i will take scooter from bali, thanks
Rain has been consistent with roads approaching beaches quagmires in places - no actual flooding that I saw.
