Nothing gives me a chuckle in Bali more than watching and listening to my Balinese business owners charging outrageous prices and getting away with it ... and them winking at me when the sale is made. I don't begrudge them at all. They have a family to feed, children to send to school and, most importantly, ceremonies to pay for.

I get upset about insincerity and Always reward honesty and generosity with good tips. I dislike the way many see you as a walking ATM card who can be charged many times normal price. Always ask the price first. Never be taken advantage of except by choice. The further you go from tourist areas the less this is an issue.

Its common throughout Indonesia, even in the village areas. Remember the whole country has a bargaining culture and fixed prices are rare. I get over charged all the time but normally it works out to very little for me so i dont care except if its blatantly double or something as in this case. But Ive been under charged and been given free stuff as well . Indonesians presumed wealthy have been known to be over charged , its not confined to westerners. . I dont see it as dishonesty tbh, the concept of egalitarianism which makes us Aussies think everyone should be treated the same doesnt really exist in their culture. As an example, If you go to Borobodur the over charging is official, you will as a foreigner pay 10 times the amount for an entry ticket as the locals will. Or that was the case 10 years ago anyway.

Lovely temple, essence of calmness and serenity. I think (not certain) that the tower is a calling structure, ? a drum tower. The bale (pron. bar-lay) is where the gamelan orchestra sits. Oh, and I smile when the sate seller doesn't miss a beat when not-explaining his pricing: we are rich bule/westerners so are fair game for a few extra rupiah. Actually, it is a sort of game to them and they mostly enjoy a bit of gracious haggling.

So many ceremonies where the locals pray for good luck and prosperity. Translates into "its ok to overcharge the rich tourists" when back at work. Charging different prices to different customers is a normal business practice in the western world too. We all pay different fares when we fly for example. I found it very interesting process to find the bottom prices for good, services and food. You will only find out when staying longterm in one place. Kind of reward for staying put. There is also on the way before you hit Bedugual a hill but it has a large carpark and you over look parts of Bali stunning. It is across the road from that big hotel called the ghost hotel. It was never finished. Suharto was building it as an investment but he ended going to jail so it never got finished. you can go in it there is security you just pay them 50 to 100 rups but you will find no local including drivers will ever go in it is falling apart but you can see just how stunning it was going to be. Are you sure he was trying to double the price? :) There were only 5 sticks in each porsion he was preparing for other people at the counter. If I'm not mistaken I saw 10 sticks in the porsion he gave you. Is it possible that he also doubled the amount of satays? :) Although if that's the case he should've said so.
He did look genuinely confused when someone behind him said or asked something (I couldn't quite catch what that person was saying) but his reply was that he forgot how much he charged you before and that was when he was selling at "patung Arjuna".

Ive been coming to Ubud every year since 1978. My friend Ulu has been living there with his wife for 25 years. I have seen you around jalan jalan....next time I will say hello & tell you I have watched your channel. I now live on a similar Island in the Phillipines which is fast becoming the new Bali of SEA. I enjoy your chats with locals.

Unfortunately its very common, even they know you, may call you a friend, they smile at you and double the price. That would be the last time I buy something there. Anyway I never go to the markets in Ubud, they too expensive already. Just a little bit to the South, direction Lodthundo, or even to the bigger market in Sayan you will find way cheaper prices. Sure you need a scooter, and sure this will not much bother you because you a single person, but I or my wife have to provide food for a family of 4. Yes I´m an expat too but I got my income in IDR.
And once you go to Java you will be shocked how cheap everything is there. E.g. a house with about 70 sqm, simple of coz, you can rent between 2 and 3 Million a year = that's your monthly rent in Ubud for a small room.

Hi goodmood. I haven't experienced a lot price jacking if I'm to be honest, but of course it happens. Having spent a few periods living in Yogyakarta I can attest to the affordable cost of living in some parts of Java - it can be quite cheap. Thanks.

@@fiascodagama1 you are very accommodating. In Oz, we dont have different pricing for tourists. In Europe I have never experienced this either. I have donated several $thousands in Bali through covid and with building projects and food that we sponsor to better their lives. When I buy building supplies for locals projects, I go prepared understanding the local price and always they try to take advantage of us. It is in my opinion, a sick mentality that I cannot grasp, then off they go to temple or ceremony to pray to the spirits for good luck or what ever its about for that day.

  • @sonnyday6830

I understand why a seller would over charge a tourist, but not a good business plan to do it to people that live there. Better to keep the local customers coming to buy his products that going elsewhere.

    • @fiascodagama1

I agree it makes sense to go for repeat business but I imagine many sellers just don't expect many westerners to hang around long.

Let’s put that into context, 10rb is $1. Why would you make him feel bad for it, also if you stick around before you walked off, he said to the next lady beside you he was mistaken about the price because he sold satay before in another location and his price there was 20rb. I believe this was an honest mistake. But to be honest, what’s $1aud for us Australians when a plate of satay like that in Perth is easily $12-15, it’s funny how in one sentence you say what’s 5/10rb more but still want to get it off him…. I’m a fan of yours, but man this reminds me of that time when my family and I were in one of those massage places and one young oz was getting her nails done, in the middle of it she argued about being charged what was written on the front sign and obnoxiously argues about 20rb…. This is what give us tourists a bad name, sure they shouldn’t try it on, but context is context, this is a 10rb plate of decent size satay, not one of those clothes selling Bali sellers selling $5.00 made in china tshirts trying to open their price at $200aud

The sate.chap said "ini bosku." This is my boss. So I'm assuming he was charging you the official price to keep face, and/or she was his wife and he didn't want to end up in the doghouse. I felt for young Edi. Many times as an interpreter, I have interviewed Indonesian men who have worked on international ships, and most have been trated terribly. Indonesians generally do not complain, this has led to massive exploitation, violence and even murder by unscrupulous captains and owners. Despite this, as Edi said there is a lot of competition in the villages for crew on international ships. I hope he does well for himself.

Edi struck me as one of those quiet achievers who when his mind is put to something he generally succeeds. I've spoken to a few young people now who have the desire to work on cruise ships. i hope conditions improve if it's as bad as you say.

Ahhh the different prices depending on who you are. And this doesn't just apply to foreigners as Jakartans are often charged tourist prices also! For Indonesian speakers like yourself Wayne it is always a bit cheeky to hang around a seller and listen to the prices that are being charged to other people and then using this information to your advantage. What about your word today being saja = just or only. When challenging the sate seller you can say sepuluh ribu saja = 10,000 only. Often locals will drop the s and you will only hear aja.

The skin tax is a little like haggling - which was very much a thing when I was in Bali 23 years back - you can always try to beat them down to the usual price.
Funny story, a couple we met whilst in Nusa Dua became friends, so we were going out as a foursome. Her husband, like me, loved trying his hand at haggling. I’m sure we were losing every encounter but it was part of the experience. His wife however hated it, and it wasn’t until almost the last day that we managed to convince her to try (until then, she refused to buy anything without a price tag).
So her first try - she approaches a store, offers her price on a scarf. The proprietor offers a counter…
And my friend’s wife, let out an expletive and stormed away… leaving us there to apologise.
We didn’t encourage her to try again. 😂
