- Yesterday afternoon I began to feel a little unwell with some aches, pains and flu-like symptoms appearing overnight resulting in me being very lethargic and fatigued, so today we don’t walk the streets of Ubud but stay at the guesthouse instead.
I show you my room as well as the Balinese compound where I live and I explain the cost of the internet I had run into my room. We chat to two of the family as they try to get me to talk me into joining them at a local wedding ceremony.
The family also provide me with some paracetamol to help alleviate my symptoms of what ever it is I’m coming down with.

Wayne, I have lived in Bali for many decades, and I still enjoy daily life stories like yours. Never apologise for portraying 'real life' in Bali. I had my first Dengue (Chickungunya) episode a while back. Unlike , my neighbours, I had a mild version. I took a Covid rapid test to eliminate that. Symptoms are very much like flu, so plenty of rest, stay hydrated (Pocari Sweat), pain relief (Paracetamol). I was right again after a week. Take care.
Hi Malcolm. It's great that even after all this time the simple day-to-day goings on in Bali still bring interest to you. Dengue is a pretty godawful experience to have to endure and I hope we don't get a second serving. Appreciate the advice, thanks.
Not boring at all Wayne, I found it very interesting to look around. The rice paddy paintings were great.
Take it easy.👍
Thanks Ian. The paintings are great, I agree.
You interact beautifully with the lovely ladies.❤❤❤I hope you have recovered by now Wayne. You are a real gentleman.❤
That's very kind of you, Sherie. Thank you.
This video was just as much about Balinese people, culture and life as any other. If anything, it was a more intimate insight than usual. Please thank your host family for their generosity in allowing us to see their beautiful way of life.
And for looking after you.
I didn't consider that at all, Jac.I hope I don't start taking it for granted - thanks for reminding me. i like the cut of your jib, Jac. :) I will pass on your appreciation. thanks.
@@fiascodagama1 Then I shall consider my jib well cut, thank you Wayne. 😄
It's really interesting añd helpful to show your interaction with your Balinese family. I actually like it better than outside the campung. Just lovely🎉
Hi Pamela. They're a lovely family - lovely people. Thanks.
I hope tomorrow is a better day.
Be well.
Thank you good, sir.
We're wishing you feel heaps. Better Wayne, just hearing you chat makes us happy. So we definitely don't find you boring, love your information and keep kicking on Wayne. Feel better 😊
Very kind of you, John. Thank you.
Thanks for the small tour . It was interesting to see where you live and hope you get better soon mate.
Thanks, rc. Appreciate it. Cheers.
I watch your inspiring videos daily and was wondering why you hadn’t posted anything. I absolutely love your cheery disposition and the way you interact with the locals. Hope to get back to ubud soon. Get well and speedy recovery Wayne. Rest up. Sandra from Melbourne 🙏
Hey Sandra. That's really generous iof you. Thank You.
I hope you get better really soon, love listening to you, you have a excellent speaking voice. Thank you for your video s.
Oh, thank you, Margaret. Thank you for watching.
So sorry you are unwell. Take care of yourself and thank you for making the effort to do a video. What a lovely guest house family you have found. Smart to stay around such caring people when you're unwell. Got some glimpses of the traditional carvings above the windows and doorways there. 😀 Rest up.
You sure do have eagle eyes , Sandie. I'm sorry i didn't consider them in this video - next time! Thanks.
Hope you recover quickly. Panadol, water and rest for you 🌷

Last few times I've flown I come down with something, small space and one crook person on board everyone gets it,hope you feel better soon.
Thanks Paul. It seems to be like that, doesn't it? I wonder how many others on the PTH-DPS flight came down with it.
Take care and rest well. What a lovely family. Thanks for the tour of the home stay. Best wishes. 😊
Thanks Marisa. They are a lovely family and will do anything they can to help. We're all becoming quite fond of each other. :)

Thanks, Nicole.
Thank you so much for your kind video…i hope you have recovered now?? Please be careful of street food especially un fridgeicated
Thanks Hayden.
Weren't you on a plane recently back from oz? Most likely picked something up on board unfortunately. Hope you feel better soon. I am a new sub from Melbourne. Considered retiring to Bali but think it is too overrun by yobbo Australians for me 😁(especially the coast), though you are doing a good job selling Ubud as an alternate. You have a very engaging personality for youtube and I will keep watching. Interesting that you no longer feel the call home to Perth. I was in SE Asia and USA for 12 years and the call to come back to Australia became so strong I could no longer ignore it. Starting to feel my old gypsy ways again, hence considering Bali!
I considered I may have picked up something on the plane. I think some of us are just destined to roam, Daniel - it's just in us. Thanks so much for giving the channel a go. Cheers.
@Swimming11 Enjoy!we are all different I guess. I much prefer Bali to Malaysia I find it too Western.
@Swimming11 My kids have lived in Bali for the past 13 years.Ive been going there for decades. If I was to move I would rent my house out, but I have no doubt I could be happy there.
I met Wayne personally in Udaipur, India last Decemebr and he's basically the same person on and off camera, a stand up person. That means a very nice person and honest. We had a wonderful chat at the rooftop of a hostel called Dreamyard or something like that.
@@TheEddieToro It was a great day, Eddie. Thank you.
Love your videos
Hi johnny, thanks a lot for taking the time. Cheers
You are a trooper to vlog when you are feeling crook. Your efforts are appreciated. Take care Wayne. 🙏
Thanks, takemetoBali.
Sorry to hear you are unwell. Thankyou for this video, it was lovely to watch and see how you interact with the people you live with. The way they care for you is why I love Bali and its people so much. Get well soon
Hey Tag. They really are caring people, aren't they?
Thanks for your video. Its interesting to see how your homestay looks like. I hope that you feel better soon. Take your rest.
Appreciate it, gerrie. thanks.
Hi Wayne. Hope you feel better soon mate. No need to apologise for the video as i think it was informative and enjoyable. Your warning about the bidet pressure cracked me up. Some of my funniest travelling stories involve those bloody things. Looking forward to your next video. Safe travels.
Hey thanks, Sean. I've always found it a bit of humor when traveling with someone and not offering advice on the toilet guns - that shriek can be heard quite a distance. :)
Hope you feel better soon. Lots of Covid about in Aus at the moment.🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️
Thanks TWD. Someone mentioned to me COVID is alive and well in Australia.
@@fiascodagama1Despite what people think and have been told, covid has always been present since the pandemic began. My brother recently had it. Ended up in hospital. Was discharged whilst still testing positive. Ended up with double pneumonia and back in hospital, and he is younger than me.
Please don't apologise for being sick-the effort you took to make this video took it out of you. Please rest and get well soon.
Selemat Malam, Wayne. Kasian. Kabar menarik: internet & ac(needed in recovering from fevers) made all the difference when I had Dengue, cooling the body down, esp beneficial 4 aging bodies. Very cool getting internet in your room instead of traipsing outside to download videos. Feel better. Rest. Massage. Enjoyed Balinese. Never had med ins but will get it now.
Hi Liz. So many of us have had dengue now it makes me think it's almost inevitable if you'e in Asia long enough. Good to see you as always.
Hi Wayne
Thank you for doing this video even though you are not well 😢
Semoga sembuh cepat 🙏
Hi Bernadette. Thanks, feeling a bit better.
I hope you get well.
Thanks MSDG. appreciate it.
Rest and Soto Ayam could be on the cards Wayne, take it easy
Now soto ayam sounds like a plan!
I hope you feel better soon!
Thanks, Leanne. A couple of days rest should see things back to normal hopefully. :)
Get well soon Wayne. Your hectic travel day back to Ubud would not help very much. You apologize for the not very exiting video but I find these videos very interesting. Normally we have no idea about Balinese daily life. Thanks to you and your ability to engage with the local population we get a glimpse of Bali life. As I said , I like it. Cheers, to good health.
Hey, Eddy. That's really generous of you. I appreciate it.
Rahajeng semeng. Well done, what a trooper. Still great content, considering your predicament.
Hope it's a speedy recovery.
Emma and I are really looking forward to another coffee with you next time we're up.

Well, you'd better book that flight so we can do it, Steve and Emma. :)
We hope you’re feeling better soon. Semoga cepat sembuh.
Thanks guys.
Sorry you not feeling great, unfortunately one picks up viruses on planes, l even got Covid on a plane to the UK March 2023 Stay hydrated and plenty rest will be best, last March in Bali l needed to purchase a throat spray after my flight as l was feeling awful.
Thank you for taking the time even though you are feeling bad 🙏🙏🙏 l love your setup and the Balinese are very kind caring people.
Hey Enlightenment. Everyone seems to have a story about picking up something on a plane. It really does suck. Thanks as always.
You caught it when you came back to Perth. I've got it, and where I work in mining, a lot of people have it. I've got the same symptoms as you.
Yeah, right. i thought it came on a bit quick considering I'd only been back in Bali for a day. Hope you're on the mend, manta.
It was a good podcast as nice to see everyday life. My first point of call for most issues is acupuncture and natural medicines. Often wondered what that availability is like in Bali. Rest well Wayne and thank you. ❤
I think there are some local alternative options. Thanks.
Thanks Wayne for taking the time and effort to show us around, giving us a glimpse into kampung life.......There is just so much we DONT SEE on a usual holiday trip to Bali.
Having a close family in Mas, near Ubud that I have know for 12 years or more, I would often walk from Jln Bisma to their home ( suprising them sometimes ).
Spending time with them and other families in Munduk I got an idea of family kumpung life, but your videos have allowed me greater awareness of all the intricaties of more of what is involved.
With so many family units in the one kumpung it must be quite a balancing act to keep things harmonious. My friends in Mas didnt get along with the families ( his uncles ) that they were living with which did cause him some stress, but they just had to find a way to get along.....almost business like rather than happy families.
Enjoy your afternoon nap and hope this little niggle passes quickly.
🙏💙🙏
Hey vicko. The family unit here appears to be quite a cohesive unit but I can understand how it might not be the case for some - family, let's face it. :)You seem to have a pretty long and close relationship with bali and some of its people. Nice!
Yes I really feel I do, but I tend not to intrude on peoples life so almost a challenge to EMBRACE to understanding and insights I gain from a SPRITUAL prospective.
My first trip to Bali with 2 friends seemed to be conditional in that I would have the same holiday they had.
Beach and massages all day and then nightclubs at night....ewww
I was so facinated by the CULTURE, the ART, THE DAILY LIFE and how what I percieved as Chaos was Centuries of WOVEN BELIEFS, TROPICAL LIFE, A REPLENISHING WAY OF LIVING WITH NATURE.......
THAT IS UNTIL THE TOURISM MONSTERS CAME TO TOWN.
And yet somehow the Balinese still seem not to get lost in it all, most likely because of the practices and beliefs they hold Within.
So my friends were annoyed at me for most of the week....and yet they began wanting to know what I was doing WHILST TBEY WERE HAVING A FUN TIME !!!!!
WELL I WAS HAVING AN INCREDIBLE TIME OF DISCOVERY, OBSERVATIONS, CHATTING WITH LOCALS, THE MEANINGS OF THE ARCHITECTURE......AND ON AND ON.
THEY JUST DIDNT THINK TO LOOK🤯
1 of them even commented....
' Ive seen lots of beautiful things in my life....I dont need to see anymore'.......WTF...😂
HOPE TO START TRAVEL TO BALI EARLY IN THE NEW YEAR....WITH THE VIEW TO MOVE TO BALI WITHIN 2-3 YEARS.
About them roosters......do you think they might be for fighting? 🫢🫣🤔😬 HOPE NOT...BUT?
@@vickokoszka6836 Hope the roosters are for breeding, but, well, you know how much the Indonesians love that sport.
Hope you are starting to feel better
Hey Peter. Might have turned the corner, I think. Hopefully out there tomorrow. Cheers.
Hope you feel better soon
Thanks, Janette.
Hope u recovering ok buddy , positive karma your ways 🌿🌿
Thanks, omeka.
First get well soon. Very cozy home, your terrace alone is worth half the rent. But rooftop comes at the price of heat. Try to avoid aircon. You will be sick much more often and never get used to the outside heat. Buy a more potent fan if needed.
Showing the daily life inside the compound is very. The house is so full of nice details which you record just by chance. It will be nice to see how your relationship with the family will develop.
Thanks, TF. I'm also looking forward to seeing how we all move forward over time. And I just love my balcony. :) Appreciate you taking the time, T.
Those things leaning against the wall do look like ceremonial umbrellas. they can be quite expensive and only get used for special ceremonies, so they get looked after well, hence the covers to stop them getting dusty or dirty. Hope the recovery goes well.
Ah, I wasn't sure about them. Thanks, Kieth.
great communicator great videos
hey that's really kind of you, Robert. Thanks so much.
Take it easy for a few days I’m sure you will feel better
Hi George. Yes, I won't be moving too far. Thanks.
On our recent trip I also became sick. Lucky, I had some Ivermectin and on day 3 was over the worst. Stay well and safe.
It's just such a spanner in the works, especially if you're only here for a week or two. Glad you were prepared a little.
@@fiascodagama1 funny, "Spanner" in 2017 in Nusa Dua hospital dying from communal pneumonia after an ambulance ride from Ubud which took 55 minutes. I was told death came to my bed, BUT, now I travel prepared.
Take care of yourself young man
Thanks, Peter. A day or two of rest should see things improve hopefully. Cheers.
You need to go and get some ‘Tolak Angin’.
If you can find a local circle K or Apotek, they will have them. Have a couple of sachets and it will help you get back to feeling good again.
Hey Charlotte, thanks so much for the heads up on what to look for - I'd not heard of it before.
@ no problem, they work wonders. I return from Bali last week and my fiancé wasn’t feeling the best. She had a couple of them and within 30 minutes she was feeling great.
Second this. I always carry sachets of these. I'm told it's for Masuk Angin, as is having your back scratched (called 'krok', I don't know how to spell it.
Wayne $280 Aussie bucks for that is good considering it's getting expensive all over the world , especially the popular tourist destinations. I paid $260 US bucks in Pokhara, Nepal back in May. It had a kitchen. A nice family who own the 6 story building in the lakeside area. Hope you get better fastWayne. Nice family there looking after you.
Hey Eddie. I think I watched that video on your channel and it looked like a pretty good deal.
@fiascodagama1 Cool 😎👍🏻 to know you watched it. The place is very well located and Raju the owner of the building speaks very good English and is very kind. I got a great deal with WiFi. No Air-conditioning was the only drawback if one's there during the hot 🥵 temperature season.
I regularly had viruses like that while living in the Solomons. Panadol, and take it easy.
Always wanted to go to the Solomon, cap.
Hope that you're OK. We were In Ubud 10 days ago and caught COVID. Just FYI. The APOTEK was very helpful with some medicine.
Thanks Virginia. That must have been annoying to have your trip interrupted for you like that.
Hope you're feeling better soon. Balinese traditional cure is to put an elastic band around your thumb or your big toe for a day or 2, then your body will detox from whatever the cause is. You can move the elastic band from thumb or toe, if it gets too tight 😅
Hope U feeling better now. Bali. Is great. .. getting sakit there is not the good. Beem there. Get well. Big thanks. For ure information .. on. Bali. 😊 In few days. U being starving. Hahs
Hey Stephen. Thanks, I think we're on the mend. cheers.
I take a small digital thermometer with me when I travel because it's helpful to know if I have a fever or if I've just had too much sun. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I carried a small finger O2 monitor. Now, I'm considering wrist blood pressure monitors due to their size, but I'm unsure about their accuracy.
Carrying a little thermometer is a good idea.
Many people don't get temperature with Covid ,look it up ☺️
Semakin lama bergaul dengan orang lokal maka akan membuat semakin akrab & membuat hidupmu semakin menyenangkan. Keuntungannya maka akan semakin banyak orang lokal yang mau membantumu. Hey Brie. I think you're right. Thanks.
Room at $280 is quoted in Australian dollars.
I pay less than that for a whole house with three bedrooms with two air conditioners in outer Jakarta. Then again it's not Bali. 😂
@@SEAescapes25 What if I'm happy here, Mark? What if it's not just about the room? What if it's about relationships as well? Apologies if my choices don't meet your standards.
@@SEAescapes25 But it has a private pool on the balcony. *shrugs*
And there's that temple in the middle of the host's home. I wonder when it was built, who did all that intricate carving, whether it built by an ancestor, if it's been in the family for many generations, what the carved images and patterns represent, when it is used, how are the offering baskets made, what offerings go in them, what happens to the offerings afterwards...
Compare that with wondering if all the hotel rooms have the same framed print on the wall.
I'm not knocking going on holiday with the aim of switching off and relaxing because that's a healthy thing to do. I'm just trying to point out that different people have different interests and priorities.
And you're being a teensy weensy bit disrespectful towards a family, their home and a community. I'm guessing you wouldn't throw your left-overs on the floor of a hotel restaurant. There's an etiquette for rooming in community settings, too.
I deleted Mark's last comment as it doesn't serve to create a positive and engaging environment.
That's a fantastic price for internet. I pay $89 a mth for 100 mbs here in Australia.
Yeah, it's pretty good, and rock solid as well.
Could also be Covid, as this starts with similar symptoms (I had both that and dengue). Best take a test and if it's that, make sure to wear a mask for around 10 days so that you won't infect others. Sorry to sound like your mother (lol) and heal well!
Thanks Ninette. Anything but dengue - that is not a good time. :)
You look like you're struggling a bit in the vlog mate. Hope you get over it quickly. Your word of the day is from Yuday when she asked sakit kepala? = sick head or headache. There is also sakit perut = sick stomach or stomach ache. My favourite sickness in the Indonesian language is masuk angin = enter wind or to have a cold! You'll see the advertisements for medicine on tv and they are all asking "masuk angin"
Ha! I love it. Thanks Daniel.
what beautiful paintings , That is why I stay a the same hotel they get to know you and i get to know them. If I have a problem I just go to the hotel owner or one of her adult kids for help. If anything happens when I am out and about I know the locals will always help or offer advice. If I move to Bali I would want to live with a local family and rent off them like you do. Do you apply for Kites and how often do you fly back home and for how long and is it cause of the visa? I like to know before I make up my mind if I move there for a long time. I also need to find out health insurance and the rest.
Jos, I'm currently leaving every two months but that will likely change on the next swing. I'll be applying for a Social Budaya or possibly another type of visa which will allow for six or twelve month period stays. If you're 60 years of age or over would a retirement visa serve you best perhaps?
The deal breaker must be the terrace outside.
Views and winds. No neighbours. Sometimes I feel lower floors are windless and stifling. Top floor requires a bit of stair climbing but more exercise is good. I'm usually at Honeymoon Guesthouse at Bisma and ask for the 4th floor. Morning views of Gunung Agung and other mountains westward are a real bonus. As well as stars at night.
I love my balcony, it's view, and the Koi pond.. I'm with you on the morning views of Agung and the mountains - they're so majestic. I still don't know their names. I used to stay on Bisma once upon a time also and liked it. Thanks Dua.

Hi Svetlana, thank you. Good to see you again.
Yeh, lot of people under estimate the value of good insurance. The best medical care we experienced has been in India, my wife got seriously ill overnight and I took her to the nearest private hospital, they did all the tests and kept her in for a week. I thought at the end (she was suspected of having dengue but it actually was a gall bladder issue) thank god we have insurance. The bill they gave me wasnt even enough to claim as it was less than the excess on the insurance. Look after yourself.
Thanks, ian. I also found treatment in India to be affordable and very good at when i've needed it. Thanks as always.

If it does not get any better in 24 hours, go see a doctor in the hospital. If you stay in Indonesia, it is better to have local insurance or BPJS (national health security system) if you have a work license. The insurance premium per year is around USD.300-USD.500 or more, depending on the benefit. The BPJS will cost you 1% of your earnings every month, and another 4% will be paid by the employer/company you work with. Since you are a tourist, it is better to have private insurance coverage.
