2-Rail O-Scale C&O Pacific -- Bob Hall Custom Build
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.9 месяцев назад
The late Bob Hall of Bellevue, Washington scratch-built over twenty-five O-scale locomotives. While most of his models were CB&Q prototype, he did build two models of Chesapeake and Ohio prototypes, including this class F18-A Pacific. The model is seen here running on Michael Ross's spectacular Virginian layout in Ft. Worth, Texas.
2-Rail O-Scale PFE Reefer String with UP Power

Here we see two early O-scale locomotives in operation with a string of PFE reefers. The diesel is a CLW cast FM 20-44, an early post-war model originally developed as a promotional item for Fairbanks-Morse. The version shown was built and finished by John Fisher. The steamer is a Lobaugh FEF, which was introduced in the 1941 catalog. The production run was cut short due to the war, so there ar...
2-Rail O-Scale Chicago and Northwestern 4-8-4 -- ATA Models
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
ATA Models was the trade name for A. Thomas Alsgard of Chicago, Illinois. Tom started in the 1930s as a customer builder of O-scale models. He eventually introduced a few standard models, including an 0-6-0, a PRR K4, a USRA heavy Mikado, and the C&NW H1 Northern. These models were available factory built or as kits. The H1 shown in this video was purchased as a kit. Alf Modine purchased this m...

This video features the work of three talented O-scale modelers. The CB&Q 2-8-0 was custom built by the late Bob Hall of Bellevue, Washington. This locomotive was expertly painted and decaled by Richard Garberson of Edmonds, Washington. All the models in the string of freight cars (except the caboose) are the fine work of Ed Bommer of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The train is running on the portable layout...
2-Rail O-Scale -- Alexander C&O K3A Mikado on Assignment to VGN

Ed Alexander was one of the best known producers of scale models in the years before World War II. He catalogued many locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars, but also did custom work. The Chesapeake and Ohio K3a 2-8-2 Mikado was one of his best selling catalog locomotives, based on how many have been seen in recent years compared to his other models. The example shown in this video is mo...
John Fisher's Pre-War Lionel 2-Rail O-Scale Train Set
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
In 1937, Lionel introduced the famous 700E New York Central Hudson as 2-rail, O-scale locomotive, along with three matching freight cars and a NYC caboose. Lionel followed up by offering "semi-scale" versions of these same models, equipped with tinplate trucks and couplers and set up for three-rail operation. The rare 2-rail versions are highly sought after by collectors and thus quite pricey. ...
2-Rail O-Scale -- Lobaugh D&H Challenger Chassis Layout Test

Lobaugh introduced the D&H Challenger just before WWII, and only a few were ever made. The model shown here was purchased at auction from the estate of Woody Mathews, who was known to have owned it. The origin of the double-motor setup, which is not stock, is unknown. During roller tests, series wiring seemed to provide smoother low-speed operation for the two motors when compared to parallel w...

    Amazing ! Is the roundhouse from the Great Southern ?

    • @ParadocsMusic
      @ParadocsMusic 23 дня назад

      Yes. The roundhouse and turntable had been in storage near Austin since the dismantling of Lorrell's layout approximately twenty years ago, waiting for a layout that never got built. They were destined for the landfill after the new owner passed away, but the DFW O-Scale Club rescued them and brought them to Dallas. Restoration is in progress. It will take a while -- maybe a year or more. We then plan to integrate them into our layout, which will take some additional time. The status of this rebuilding is discussed starting half-way down page 16 of the "DFW Portable Layout" thread in the 2-rail section of the Model Train Journal online forum.

    Beautiful job with getting the Hudson to run on 2 rail. I am a 2 "railer" myself and was wondering how you isolated the loco wheels? I had the rare opportunity in the 1960's to obtain that Hudson for $15! I sold it for my first O scale Niagara that I also enhanced, as it was originally made with sand castings, and now has lost wax castings and an entire underframe/new drivers.

      I have two-railed three rail locos (I am talking about O-scale, not tinplate) by cutting through alternate spokes with a jewelers saw, running liquid epoxy into the gaps, then, when set hard, cutting through the other alternate spokes and doing the same thing. Finally cleaning up with needle files. If a fragment of metal in one of the gaps shorts the wheel, apply a heavy dc current from a car battery. A brief flash and the short is gone.

    This shows that Lionel could have put out nice detailed scale size engines and Passenger cars and could have given the purchaser the choice of having to rail or 3 rail. The pre-war Rolling Stock looks so much better than the stuff he produced after the war. Nicely proportioned and well-detailed.

    You can run NPC cars on 2 rail O scale. You just have to replace the wheel sets and since the trucks are plastic that is easy to do. The trucks don't look realistic-looking but since they're totally black it is hard to see them anyways. I bought some to rail d.c. locomotives that ahm had brought out and then they drop the line. I wish they had continued because their prices were decent and their cars were of the same quality of their ho cars. In those days you had to be really dedicated to be an O scale two trailer because everything was made in such small numbers usually by hobbyist making for others products that they made for their own Railroad. That's how Bruce Walters got his start. You look at the 0 scale two rail DC steam locomotive that Milton Cronkite would custom make they would be like $1,000 now this was when a brand new GMC pickup truck with $1,200 so you see how expensive it was. And you needed a minimum size layout of 6 ft in diameter usually layouts were around the wall because of the space required. You could model old-time 0 scale trains and they would take up the same amount of space that an HOA layout would because they were so much smaller and took smaller radius track. You could model an old-time railroad with a 440 standard American or a 4-6-0 ten wheeler. Old-time time engine like these as well as short wood cars would manage very tight radius alleviating the need for a huge amount of space. And 027 size d car would fit the time era as long as you had to rail trucks underneath it preferably Arch bar trucks to be prototypical.

    My collection I have a Walters 0 scale catalog. It was $0.25 the same price as a Model Railroader magazine issue. Looking through the catalog at the items available and their prices you can see that 0 scale was an adult man's Hobby not a child's toy. As scale and detail-oriented as h o. Looking through the catalog I thought of the man who bought it I wondered if he survived World War 2? And one of my issues there is it HO scale layout in a basement it belonged to the last Airman killed in World War after which the Nazis had no more airplanes. This Model Railroader died to preserve this country. He never came home to run his trains again. It was a somewhat poignant moment. I look at it and I think all that this guy wanted to do was run his trains. I'm sure that his greatest desire was to be able to come home and go back to running his layout. People nowadays especially young people do not know the sacrifice people have made. If and when their turn comes I don't know if they are up to the task. Time will tell.

    The Lionel pre-war Hudson locomotive had a minimum radius of 6 ft which was o72 track. This was called the t rail track. If I am not wrong I believe the cars that were offered with it were diecast. Including the wood caboose. When I came across diecast cars I would buy a ton of them because you're nothing like having a Real Steel freight car when you have a dozen of them being pulled in a train and they go through a switch or across they t h u m p like a real train because of the weight of the cars. Hell you could probably kill somebody hitting them in the head with one of these Freight cars. Hahaha.

  • @frankmarkovcijr5459
    @frankmarkovcijr5459 Год назад

    In my issues of Model Railroader Magazine from the late 1940s to the 1950s they sell ads of people who make fake cars and the bottom of the freight car allows either Lionel trucks and couplers or scale trucks and couplers. When AMT made the extruded aluminum Passenger cars to go with Lionel's F3 diesel locomotives that was his incentive to make his own. When they show movies of the Lionel showroom layout the cars behind the lion lf3 are really AMT aluminum passenger cars. Lionel did not make them yet so they put them on the layout of course they didn't tell anybody you they weren't Lionel cars.

    Nice to see such a beautiful 0 scale 2 rail layout. As a Model Railroader I am so bothered by the fact that people call 3-rail both scale when it's really 0 gauge. Being and xho scale Model Railroader I just disdain the third rail that we are basically stuck with because Lionel was too cheap to go to rail after World War II like American Flyer did. He wanted post-war to be compatible with three war and that meant we were stuck with three rail track. Now you can run three-wheel cars onto rail track as long as you run kitchenary with overhead power. All the GT1 electric can run off overhead electric and therefore you can have overhead electric and two rail with three-wheel cars because there is nothing to short out. I wish this video was longer 4 minutes is not enough to see how beautiful it is. They should also show a track plan with overall dimensions.
