I also find it useful to warm the trans oil in a hot water bath before using the hand pump, makes pumping much easier.
I lost a nice van when my engine caught fire. Honestly I don't believe these are sufficient for a gasoline fire. Im not saying its foolish but....... it gives you a false feeling of confidence. The best system is a real halon engine suppression system with a 165F temp sensor . Looks like a small fire extinguisher with has a temp sensor on the top to open at a set point. Its much much better then a charged plastic hose with only a small amount of agent inside.
Oh you guys...so much loss in such a short time. Give yourself grace. Take time to heal. We will always be here-do what you need to do to be at peace.
It was a rough year for sure... We are on the mend and things are better for both of us and we are looking forward to lot's of adventures this year! nate
New to using YT, not sure how my post were deleted did u get my message about heat concerns on the tank . I guess that’s the reason for being upright as the relief valve is situated at the top of tank in vapor space. But don’t think it would get above 120* F
Yeah I don't know what happened to your comment? Understood about the relief valve but we have used the system in below freezing up to 90+ degrees. It has sat outside in the sun on the hottest days and we have not had an issue. Some people put the cylinder inside the cabinet standing up. Maybe that is a better plan your system nate
@@ThatBaldwinLife…….thanks for the reply
Is that the 5KW version
No, not sure on the size exactly. The manual says heating capacity of 1800W? It is the Espar B1L nate
I checked online and this model looks to have been rated at 3kw
Awesome video! Camped at Point Sublime in June, 2021 (same "good side" campsite you have here) and just got my permit today to go back this coming late May. Can't wait!
Thanks! What an amazing site huh? Enjoy your trip in May!! nate
@@ThatBaldwinLife Thank you!
I don't own either one but I've researched them!!! The Chinese heaters clog up easier ,not exactly sure why but I've heard that people buy a larger one (btu) and figure that they will run it on low ! But this is the problem, especially on Chinese heater!!! You need to run on high to complete the burn and reduce the soot !!! It would be better to have 2 small units running on high than one large one on low. This increases the cost but should help with the soot build up!
I will take better quality with a higher price tag over unknown quality and cheap. nate
He is intentionally avoiding to point that camera at the heater it self, because this Espar gasoline heater looks the same and functions the same as the Chinese diesel heater, but only, it has an American price tag as you will expect all "Made in USA". The Americans and Germans first made this heated and sold it exorbitantly expensive ($1000-$2000), then the Chinese copied it and are selling it for around $175. You can use diesel, kerosene, and gasoline in the Chinese heater. It makes no economic sense to spend 10x the amount and get the same thing.
The "he" is me. A made in Germany Espar heater is of much higher quality than a $200 Chinese knockoff. You can still get all of the replacement parts for Espar, but if your CDH breaks, you need to buy a new one. Glad you are happy with your purchase and it is keeping you warm. nate
Excellent video. I used it to disassemble and reassemble one driveshaft, but found damage on the second so I needed to replace the joints. I found assembled gxn driveshafts for just $200, which is not much more than the $150/side required to rebuild them
Glad you got that sorted. If your old CV joints are still in decent shape and are OEM VW, keep them and rebuild them. They will be better quality than anything you can get today. Also, watch those GKN boots, they tend to be garbage. nate
My 84 have just 114,00mi on it, i was stored like since 2002 when i bought it, just replaced al linkages but im in a struggle if i need to replace or not the oil on the transmission 🥲and what type of oil ( im in a tropical island of 🇵🇷PR) what are your suggestions? I read you…
Look for GL4 rating for a synchronized gears in a 80w90 for non synthetic. Should be able to find that. 75w90 for synthetic if it is available. nate
Ridge Walker Brewery is temporarily closed
Oh that's too bad! Thanks for the heads up! nate
Question. Did you repack the hubs with grease or is it enough to put grease only in the joints? I have a kit like you with the grease packets and I’m not sure if I’ll have enough to repack the hubs and the joints with the grease packets supplied with the kit. I believe my boot kits are Loebro although the box says GKN Made In Italy. I’m considering leaving the hubs packed with the grease that’s already in there but then I’ve heard not to mix grease and then I found a Samba thread that said it’s no problem. You didn’t show this part in your video nor mention it and I’m just wondering what your thoughts are. I am trying to get my Vanagon back together this weekend since I need to get it smogged soon. I really don’t want to order more grease from the vendor and wait for shipping etc. There isn’t much info online on this. What do you normally do? This is my first time doing this. Great vid BTW.
It depends on what grease was in there and what you are using. If if is OEM type CV grease and you are using CV grease, then no problem mixing. Good luck on smog! nate
Hi guys. Re-watching ur videos and thinking shout you. I lost both of my parents in the past year, pretty tough. Hope all is well with you, and happy holidays!
So sorry to hear that. What a tough thing to go through. Nancy and I are doing better now and looking forward to new adventures. Thank you for taking the time to share and comment. take care nate
Another great video Nate. Good idea swapping to the Merc locking nut, more control over locking where you want it and no chance of swarf entering the grease. A good point mentioned was the "free play" in the bearing at the start. We were always told that a slightly loose bearing will keep going, whereas an over tight bearing will fail first. On my caravan I have a pvc tube that fits over the bearing cap so when I hammer the caps on I don't damages the cap, as the pipe fits around the seat, I hate seeing damaged bearing caps.👍👍 I'll stop binge watching now and leave you alone!!! From Australia.😁😁
Thanks, that's a great tip on using a PVC tube to protect the bearing cap during installation! Watch all you want :) take care nate
Great well explained video, thanks. I noticed you didn't use the gaskets on the boot, any reason why?
Since there is no provision for it in the cv joint, I decided against it as it would just crush and fall apart when installed. nate
Wise words at the end. ✌
Thank you. Too many people are gripped by fear of the unknown. Thanks for watching Nate
I dont have a T25 yet, but watching your videosmakes me feel ill be prpared to use it when i do. I do however, have a classis bug, yours is cool as.👍
Hope you can track a good one down and take it on some adventures! In the meantime, enjoy that Bug! nate
@ThatBaldwinLife haha, thanks. We just put an offer on a aussie 89 camper.👍 will do...
Thanks for the detail.👍 just starting to look for a T25 here in Australia. Not many westys available AND affordable!!! We have our own van conversions too here. You create good content, keep it up.👍😁😁
Thanks! Even here in the states they are pretty unaffordable as well. Good luck on the search! nate
Great video!! Can I ask what date or month that you were out there? Thanks!!
We visited in November which is a great time due to less people in the area. Thanks! nate
Nate - screw a 1x2 - 18" to 24" strip of wood to your cross cut/miter guide. this will stabilize the feed stock as it passes across the blade.- Charlie
There's a guy who knows about wood working! Great idea. thanks nate
I see two types of Bentley manual, yours and a just green cover. What are the difference? Somebody knows? Thanks!!
Not sure, I have only seen the green ones? nate
Hey guys, I don't know you and you don't know me. But I was really moved by this video. In the past I'd been checking in because your vanagon content has been really valuable to me, and I appreciate people sharing their knowledge/experience. And now I just popped back to your channel to re-watch your new brakes video and saw this one first. I felt compelled to tell you how grateful and impressed I am when I experience people sharing such realness & struggles about their lives, especially about loss and mental health. I hope that things have turned around since you posted this video, and that you're both feeling better in the day to day. ✌️
Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to comment. Yes we are doing better and have been on a few adventures since that video and are planning many more in 2025. Take care nate
I too like to take a little adventure in my bug or my Ghia. My Westy does get jealous.
The Bug is a fun day trip for sure! nate
2:00 - Do you have the model of that Carefree Colorado awning? Thanks.
No we sold it years ago and now have a 10' Fiamma F45 nate
@@ThatBaldwinLife Thank you. A quick follow up: Are you able to deploy the Fiamma F45 by yourself? Or does it require a 2nd person to deploy and store?
Yes you can deploy it on your own. Just crank it out about one foot then drop the legs down. Crank it out another 3-4 feet and move the legs out. Repeat until it is fully deployed. Reverse to wind it up. nate
I truly love you guys 💗
Aww, thank you! nate
You need to use a typical grease gun tube of grease for each pair. That's not enough.
You should really use CV joint specific grease like the OEM's use. Also, overpacking the joint/boot will only cause it to leak out when the joint gets hot. The boot is not a reservoir for grease, it is only there to protect the joint from the elements. nate
I'm speaking about the amount, not the type.
The bay bus square fuel filter will act as a reducer
Interesting!
20 times more than stinky cheap Chinese diesel heater and worth every penny.
We really like our gasoline heater. It is quite an upcharge but a single fuel source for us was worth it. nate
Hello!! Any tips on reinstalling the CV joints on to the van? I assume you have to bolt up the wheel side first instead of the transmission side, correct? You do not use any loctight? just the special washers, correct?
Nope, just reverse order of removal. You can start at either the wheel or transmission side but you will need to either rotate the cv flange or wheel to align the bolts. No Loctite, just the serrated washers and torque to 33 foot lbs. nate
Awesome video. Thx for sharing
Thanks for watching! nate
really great video. Thanks.
Glad it helped! nate
Super video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching! Nate
Thank you for this very informative educational video. Going to try this on our own. Do you jack up the van at all?
I don’t but our van is lifted a bit and I’ve got plenty of room. If you do, make sure it is on level ground when filling to get an accurate measurement. Nate
What kind the transmission oil is? Also isn't better to open the filling cap open so the air would push the oil out faster and help to get all the oil out? Just a question, you know better,is just an idea. Thank you brother.
It is Swepco 75w90 synthetic oil. There is a transmission vent bole up top that lets the transmission breath. Thanks for watching! Nate
Good heavens! I may "need" that! 🤪
Just like i "needed" it! :) nate
😂
We might have crossed paths as we were coming back into Oregon in mid October after 3 weeks in Montana, finishing our time in Jordan Valley with Jeep side trips into Leslie Gulch and Succor Creek, and then over to Frenchglen and a wonderful tour on the newly refurbished Steens Mountain loop! The weather was perfect and this is definitely our favorite corner of Oregon. Glad you had the opportunity to enjoy it as well!
Where did you see us? It was some pretty amazing weather for sure! And yes, the Steens loop is in pretty great shape right now. nate
@@ThatBaldwinLife We camped in Jordan Valley on the 12th and 13th, and Frenchglen on the 14th and 15th. We also made it to Fields on the 14th in time to enjoy a burger and shake.
Starry, starry night! Fine ending!
Thanks! nate
Last year I visited these areas. Had the burger and milk shake. Wowie. 2025 plan to go back to the Pillars of Rome Jordan Valley, (to small trailer park), leave Trailer, then go over into Idaho to Silver City ghost town. Exceptional drone showing beauty of area. Alvord desert had water when I was there, no driving! Campground has old military signal vans for rental cabins. Really a great part of Oregon.
Next time we will definitely get the milkshake! Glad you are planning on going back, there is so much to explore out there. Thanks for watching! nate
I put the drilled and slotted rotors on all my vehicles last much longer and you have better stopping power
And they look nice :) nate
I know this is an old video but a spare alternator is a must
We keep a spare voltage regulator with us. The odds of the windings or bearings failing is very low. nate
Nice camper with mods. How do you sanitize the 13 gallon onboard water tank, bleach, iodine or StarSan?
We occasionally use vinegar to clean it out.
Great video! First video I am also an Oregonian. I've heard of that area but definitely need to get out there. Great drone footage and that time lapse with stars behind the van was awesome. It must take hours to edit all that. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Thanks! It is a must see area for sure. Appreciate the kind words and thanks for watching! nate
You stopped at Field Station and didn't have a milkshake!?! Was out at Steens a year and a half ago, hit up Alvord Desert, drove the loop, camped up at Fish Lake on top of the mountain. Super cool area, ready to go back. Nice video, this is the first of yours I have watched, nicely done I enjoyed it a lot.
No, we knew we didn’t have the appetite for the burger and shake so we chose burger this time. Shake next time!! Thanks for watching and hope you stick around for more! Nate
Do you have a diesel heater?
We have an Espar gasoline heater. Nate
I bought one with the extra kit and coffee pods was so hyped for it’s arrival. Charged it used it only to find that the heating element was not working. Sent it back. Not for me personally
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! Ours has worked flawlessly so far. Sucks you got a bum unit. nate
I love that you pulled the RAINIER.
Vitamin R!! 😁🍺🍺 Nate
That a cool ride! Sort of looks like the rover from the old lost in space.
😁😁 Thanks! Westy is definitely our rover! Nate
Careful out there, they hate outsiders, and think every one is a city lib. The cops out there will let people break your bones and steal all you own , leaving you crippled and homeless.
Wow, that is quite a take on the people out there. Did you have a bad experience? We only ran into the nicest people. Long talks with multiple hunters, the people in towns were helpful and kind, and we didn't run into any cops :) Hope you can go back and have a better experience! nate
@ personal experience. Its gotta be bad culty small town shlt. careful after you hit La Grande and head north NE.
@ Id also like to say that I met a d talked win many nice normal people and small town local folk. The problem seemed to be with the more wealthy and property, establishment, gas station owners. $$$ rules, dont be a fool.
For sure, lot's good and bad in all places. Hope your next experience is a positive one, no matter where you go. nate
@@ThatBaldwinLife So how about bring the same harm back to them, their family and homes? Isnt it true that only cowards run and dont fight back? Perhaps the same harm and crimes need to be brought back onto them? Its the law in these small culty towns. They invited it onto themselves.
