In the realm of musk oxen and golden plovers - Dovrefjell, Norway
My first goal in Scandinavia was to photograph musk oxen, golden plovers and bluethroats in Dovrefjell National Park in Norway. I talk about my first photos and what I look out for when I want to photograph animals with a slightly shorter focal length.

    Background blur much like long exposure waterfalls is not what the human eye naturally sees and is often overdone, to each their own. I switched from Canon and 500 f/4 prime, to me I value portability over blur any day of the week! Thanks for your honest views and fantastic video!

    Great review. The R5 MK II has such a great AF system compared to the original R5. However, I am a little puzzled. I am hitting the buffer sooner than I think. Each time I was watching the Osprey dive and then it would buffer out and the next frame is the bird emerging from the water! I am not sure if my settings are impacting the buffer? Any suggestions welcome. Oh and the over heating. I got the symbol with one bar and this was after not frantically firing frames off! The overheating freaked me out in the original R5 and I hope this will not re-occur. Overall a great camera.

      I sometimes hold the camera with one hand over the water, I need to move quickly, lay to the ground, get up, etc. let’s not even talk about heavy rain or snow - the usb-port is not waterproof. Honestly, If I spent 15k on a lens/camera, I can afford 200$ more on batteries

    thank u for the informative and experience oriented videos! I do charging by powerbank wired my sony a7rV even sitting in the hide or walking in the wild. it does not decrease my mobility. Actually if the body is on it will not charge but saves the battery, but it definitely charges quickly if it is off. thanks to the highly capable usb-c ports on the body and the powerbank as well. this is a much more affordable and highly efficient solution than to buy 2-3 spare batteries, especially original ones, with regards of the high price. think so?

    I just bought a Nikon Z8. With the 2,01 firmware update, autofocus is spectacular, particularly for bird photography. It is lighter than the D850, and has the same general specifications as the Z9 in a smaller, lighter body. The stacked sensor eliminates rolling shutter problems, the 45.6 MP resolution exceeds most modern lenses, and the video performance is phenomenal. It's an amazing camera, and I love it.

    Fabian, excelemt photos of the golden plovers, especially with the rainbow! You're fortunate to have seen them in breeding plumage. In my area, we occasionally have American Golden Plovers. I got one somewhat far out with some black belly plumage. But, a few days ago I was fortunate enough to have one fly a few feet in front of me at the jetty right next to my hotel on Cape Cod. It had no breeding plumage but golden hour light was perfect and he didnt shy away from me at all.

    I am also looking for a bag to go to Antarctica and Patagonia this year. There is a weight limit of 17lbs for carry-on and I wanted to bring my R5ii and R5 with RF 600f4, 100-500, 24-105, and 14-35. Would that all fit in the Nya-Evo Fjord 60C and make the weight limit? I was also looking at the MrJan Boris IV. Have you tried that pack? I'm also really looking at that 100-300 f2.8 that you have. I have a z9 and I tried a zeta 8 both with 180/600, shots on common owl and the z9 with bird recognition always hooked the subject's eye even sometimes when it was closed while the z8 struggled to recognize the subject and never hooked the eye. Same settings. For me from what I could try it is a big difference for an animal photographer. Then I am always struck by how the z9 nine hooks the subject just by pointing at it, the white square immediately positions itself on the subject's eye

    What comes to my mind 800 mm f6.3 vs 150-400 f4.5 (OM System) That's actually f6.3 vs f9.0 depth of field fight. Just 1EV of DoF difference. Seems not much.. It does mean for me that: *if he object gets closer* the depth of field will be almost indentical _(almost, not entirely..)._ Worse if the object doesn't fill the frame... then, depth of field increases more, so it's not that shallow anmore. But then.. I would say it would be fight of tase: *I want shallow depth* vs *I want target including his environment more by showing the background.*

    • @FabianFoppNaturephotography
      @FabianFoppNaturephotography 6 дней назад

      Yes, the depth of field is the same as with the (much cheaper) Canon RF200-800/6.3-9. As you say, for songbirds it’s usually ok, but for many other species I don’t like the large depth of field. If you occasionally want to show more background, then you can always stop down the Z800/6.3 😊

    • @pentagramyt417
      @pentagramyt417 6 дней назад

      @@FabianFoppNaturephotography I completely forgot about 200-800 Fabian! I don't like it either. I prefer also shallow depth. I wonder about my upgrade from A7-IV and 200-600, to OM1 mark II + 150-400, or Z8/Z6III with 800 mm F6.3. + x1.4 TC (as between 800-1000 mm lens would be preferable by me at base). Even though about 300 mm f2.8 GM with TC's, but that might hit at x2 TC image quality there.. and I need mostly 800 mm at base. That's almost ideal focal length for 65% of my shooting, 35% is around 350-400 mm. I love sunrises, and sunsets, birds on water and songbirds, though getting other animals than only birds is also very important and you have to keep distance. I don't know which way should I go, as I also keep hiking, I use my legs a lot. I don't prefer to sit and wait, and the decision is there hard. Maybe your opinion would be crucial, as you have tested a lot of the systems. Thanks in advance Fabian!

    As people are moving towards FF and APSC mirrorless and companies are stopping DSLR production , the used marked has a lot of lenses for right prices and it will go down as more people jump the ship . So from a price pov I think DSLR APSC or FF makes more sense if you are not a hybrid shooter . Nikon FF DSLR has APSC mode which gives you 1.5x crop , e.g. D850 in crop mode is a D500 and has more or less same burst rate and buffer . I think smart choice from a $ perspective is to stick with DSLR . Go to gym work out so that you have enuf capacity to carry a 5-8kg setup 😅.

It has that ruggedness and professional body which should be okay for the next 5 years. Hope Nikon comes up with something like a Z500 apsc mirror less with an OLED EVF and unlimited buffer. APSC is the happy middle ground, you can collect FF Lenses (EF or F) and in future you can use it in respective R or Z mount using the adapter + 1 or 2 wide angle lenses.

      Really? I think would be the first tele lens ever that has more focal length than advertised

      @@FabianFoppNaturephotography Disclaimer! This is from what I have read only! It is an interesting topic - many reviews claim that regarding focus breathing it goes like this: 180-600 > 600/4 > 600/6.3. But it should be the other way around! 180-600 breathes the least. They get it wrong because the image magnifies with closer distances, contrary to Sony's lense 😀. It makes them think that since 600/6.3 has a bigger image it breathes less. I don't have this lens, so it is up to you to measure the real effective focal length and make an interesting video.

    I settled on the non-recycled version of this bag a few years ago (only because the re-cycled version was not out yet!) and have generally been very happy with it. It's the most versatile bag I've found that essentially goes from 42l to 60l+ letting you carry nearly and combination of camera gear and hiking necessities. Other brands offer good or even better solutions at both ends of the scale but lock you in more or less so often your bag is a bit too small or total overkill. One major area of improvement I would mention are the two side pouches which are too small. The opening needs to be bigger (a 1litre Nalgene bottle barely fits) or even better, the pouches are replaced by a Molli system so the user can add pouches or pockets depending on preference/need. More an optimization than a fault, I would have preferred thinner, wider shoulder straps and waist belt as I believe the width plays a greater role in wearer comfort than the thickness of the padding - this change would probably shave a few hundred grams off the overall weight which is my last source of criticism: the bag with L or XL RCI is well over 4kg total weight which is over half the "official" carry-on weight allowance of most airlines before you have put a single piece of camera equipment in. That said, I recently flew Singapore Airlines with an XL-RCI containing a Z8, Z6ii, Z 800 PF, Z 100-400, 24-120, 1.4x tc, and four batteries. Total weight about 13kg but due to the unobtrusive appearance, was able to bring it as carry-on, no issues.

      Wow, you're more risky than me. I have the 36 liter and the new 50 liter version. While I love the bags, I totally agree with you about the weight problem for carrying on airplanes. I travelled this month to Australia with the 50 liter version and had the 7kg weight limit for carry-ons like in most of the world. I packed the medium RCI with: Nikon Z8, Z 20mm prime, Z 14-30mm, Z 24-120mm, Z 100-400, 1.4x teleconverter and one battery. That brought me to like 7.2kg, which technically would have exceeded the weight limit had I been checked. I put other gear like more batteries, memory cards, laptop, and filters in my small laptop bag to carry-on, which worked without issue. I loved the the bag's expandability for sure! Funny but the new 50 liter version is actually 100grams lighter than the 36 liter. One thing I did was break down the small RCI and put it in my check-in luggage so when I got to Australia, I could use that as a storage place for gear and keep the medium RCI in the big bag.

    Setting up my new R6ii. I too am NOT a fan of back button focus. I like the way you set up your buttons. Thanks for taking the time to talk us through all these settings!

    I’ve been using this bag for a year now. I was sold by the recycled materials and the roll top which is indispensable here in the colder months. It’s still a hikable camera bag and not a hiking backpack that you can put gear in, but it works for up to 6 hour hikes. I can fit an 800mm 6.3, a 400 4.5 a 1.4TC and a Z8 - yeah that’s a heavy pack.

    Hi Fabian!!👋 I love the backpack but can you please provide details on your camouflage rain guard/skirt seen around the 1minute mark in your video? I have one but it’s loud and makes rustling noise and is small. The material of yours looks supple… Any details you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!!

    Thanks for the great review, of all the backpacks you own or tried so far what is your first choice? I have very similar gear and need something to carry two bodies with lenses attached, a 500 F4 and the 100 to 500. Thank you.

      I think for that combination I would go for the Nya-Evo Fjord 60. if I need to transport my 600/4 and 100-300/2.8, then I prefer my f-stop Shinn

    A very good thorough review. You were apparently having a lot of issues with bugs whilst filming and I could really feel your discomfort (midges, mosquitoes and practically every other kind of bugs seem to love feasting on me 😬). So much so that I ended up itching along with you. Best wishes from Wales. Incidentally the bag looks very similar to the Gitzo Adventury 45L which I currently own.

    I'm throwing out the flipside trek 450 as an option because i've used it for years and its brilliant. That said I can fit a 100-400mm 25mm 12-60mm and 30mm as well as two bodies, DJI Pocket 2 and other accessories because of the m43 advantage ;)

    Will this fit a gripped r5 or r5 mark 2. What other gear did you put in there since it is 60L? How does it compare to the Gura Gear Kiboko 2.0 30L or 30L+? I am in the market for a bag for my R5m2+Grip+RF600F4 and my R5m1+Grip+RF100-500. Other than the Kiboko 2.0, nothing else claims to fit in the overhead bin with this loadout on an international flight. Thanks!

      Yes, it should also fit a gripped R5. I have both tested the Gura Gear, but 30L seems a bit smaller 😉

      @@FabianFoppNaturephotographyThe gura gear is 30L, not 60L as the one you have reviewed here. But i am confused as to how one could hold twice the volume of the other and still fit in an overhead bin. I did see the extra bit on the top that seems to extend upwards to hold extra volume but be tucked away when not used, but to go from 30L to 60L? That needs some more explanation to me. I say this as someone who is serious about purchasing one of these two bags to hold my gear on my planned overseas trips in 2025. I really need to make the right decision. Thanks for making this option known to me. I will be looking around for more info.
