Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 - MUST-HAVE lens for nature photographers?
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.21 день назад
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM is small, light and, at a price of around €400, not very expensive. However, due to the short focusing distance, it achieves an image scale of up to 1:2, which makes it very interesting as a wide-angle macro lens. I almost always have this lens in my backpack and use it for close-ups of flowers or other plants, habitat shots (wide-angle shots) of mammals and birds...
Canon EOS R1 - Review for wildlife photography
Просмотров 16 тыс.21 день назад
The Canon EOS R1 is the first official flagship mirrorless system camera from Canon. With 40 frames per second, a large viewfinder with eye control, a state-of-the-art autofocus system with cross-type sensors, preburst and much more, the camera definitely has a lot to offer. However, many animal photographers prefer the higher-resolution R5 II due to its rather low resolution. You can buy the e...

Important accessories for your telephoto lens
In my experience, do not spend any quality time with Canon pro bodies if you don’t want to end up buying one. They can not be defined by the specs. Other cameras just feel “less than” afterwards. For some kinds of wildlife the 24 Megapixels could be an issue but you knew that going in. Good luck!!! I’m sure you’ll get great use out of it.
Congrats on your purchase of the new R3 MKII....errrrrr...I mean R1.😁😁😁
🎉🎉🎉
Congrats on the R1. I still think a R3 would have been a better bargain. I am really doubtful that the R1 is significantly better than the R3.
Hi Fabian I really enjoy your channel. Congratulations on your new R1 One thing I would like to mention about your RF 28-70 F2 is that there is another smaller lighter option. It's the RF28-70 F2.8. Reviews on this lens are very positive.
Liking my G9ii and 100-400mm kit.
Good introduction❤
I vowed never to use another Canon camera....until I started using Sony cameras..... which I disliked so much that I took a $2,500 hit to move back to Canon. Nikon cameras are too heavy. I got severe tendonitis when using a Sony camera due to their Industrial design. And Canon is a company that emphasizes profit at the expense of their customer satisfaction... much more so than other camera companies I think. Not a lot of good choices.. But, at the end of the day, Canon cameras are the most comfortable to use, the most ergonomic, and have the best looking pictures straight out of camera which is almost all I shoot.
As a long term Sony alpha user, I expected a bit more from the A1ii, but it makes me happy I chosen the A9iii. Enjoy your R1 😉📸
Congratulations Fabian on purchasing the Canon R1! 🎉 Sounds like it just might fulfill all your needs except for the megapixels but you can a compensate for that with a high quality zoom lens. Look forward to your experiences and future reviews and how it performs for you. 🤗
I shoot with a 500mm prime and 1.4x TC, for 700mm focal length. Only the RF200-800 outmatches this combo in terms of focal length, but it is optically inferior. The R3 and 24mp is fine if you can get close to your subject and fill the frame. It can still take nice environmental shots with the bird smaller in the frame. It is not great when it comes to cropping. As an example, I can shoot in crop mode with the R5 and still get an 18mp image. A tad smaller than the 24mp in the R3/R1, and with a 1.6x crop factor for extra reach.
Nice video Fabian thanks for sharing. So which one are you going to keep? Canon or Sony?
I don't own any Sony equipment
Congratulations for the R1! I'm looking forward to read more about 24 mpix with the perspective of a bird shooter! I'm still hesitating a lot for my next camera...
Thanks!
I shoot with a R3, 24mp. If I could turn back time, I'd have went with the R5, rolling shutter be damned. The R3 has beautiful image quality, don't get me wrong. But if you can't get close to the bird, then cropping is painful. If you can get close to the bird and fill the frame, well then it's a good option imho.
@@davepastern Did you ever notice an advantage of your R3 over a higher megapixels camera in low light?
@@attiksystem the R3 is the best camera on the market (at least, until the R1) for high ISO performance. Online tests have show it to be about 1/3 a stop better than the A1 (given that the A1 is 50mp, the R3 isn't so impressive I guess if you factor in the mp count). I haven't heard any reviewer yet stating that the R1 is better than the R3 at high ISO. Nor have I heard any claims about DR being better either. All I hear is AF is better, prefocus, blah blah blah. People are blaming the DR and high ISO performance of the R5II laughably on the BSI stacked sensor and I call bullshit - the A1 is BSI stacked and has better DR and high ISO performance than the R5II, and with 5mp more no doubt (and a 4 year older sensor too). That Sony has kept the same sensor for the A1II speaks volumes for how far ahead Sony is in sensor tech vs Canon. Canon is lagging behind. It might be an unpopular opinion, but I reckon it's the truth. I'm financially committed to the Canon ecosystem, otherwise I'd be off to Sony world.
Having an option between R5 Mark II and R3 right now, which one would you choose for Wildlife? New R3 is aprox. 70% of the cost of new R5 Mark II...
hi Fabian Congratulations on your purchase of the Canon R1. I look forward to your experiences with this camera. I am curious whether the high weight and size of the camera and lens will not hinder you from being able to use it comfortably, especially on your long trips through the beautiful Swiss mountains. I look forward to your upcoming videos about your experiences with this Canon R1. Kind regards from the Netherlands❤
Thanks!
R1 is the best mirrorless camera these days. 24MPix is OK and you can very easily upscale any photo in post. 6K 12bit RAW is better than 8K RAW for my personal scenarios. Little bit shame that R1 does not have 1/400 flash sync speed as Sony A1 but this is for me only one and only downside for Canon R1
I almost never use flash 🙈
Looks like you had a deal with canon 😂, congratulations 🎊
Why??
Please do a set up guide for the R1
Thanks for the feedback
Congratulations for r1, for me Sony A1 mark 1 and 2 too expensive. Better to buy canon r5 mark 2 or Nikon z8.
Thanks
Welcome to the “modest” megapixel club Fabian. Sincerely, An R3 shooter
Thanks!
Congrats on the R1. I'm sure you'll get some superb results out of it, especially with winter coming and low-light shoots for owls. The R3 was amazing for this and I would imagine the R1 will be even better.
Thanks!
Brilliant! a1II video turns into a "I bought a R1" video. 👍 No CF Express 4.0 support on the a1II, similar to the R1.
At least I only talked about expensive cameras, so there is some consistency 😂
Congrats on the new body!
Thanks
I tested the OM1 and loved it for photos... But I bought the G9II for its insane video quality. I really, really want OM Systems to throw the OM1 sensor into a more affordable/smaller body. It would be my dream to have the OM1 sensor in like the OM5 body. Much like what Sony does with the A7IV/A7C series, OM should give us a more compact and cheaper alternative to get that awesome sensor. It would become my every day carry immediately!
我也是佳能的老用户,但是从无反开始,它的镜头群不够丰富,而且有些贵。
Very sound choice. People who buy the R1 get it for a reason. It’s just an awesome camera! Jan and yourself being stunned by it just speaks volumes on what Canon have achieved. Let’s hope they deliver on the R7ii (mini R5ii with battery grip to finally succeed the 7Dii) and cook up a R5ii but pro body. Back to the 28-70/2, if I was shooting Sony this would be a no brainer and now the rumours with the Canon mark 2 version, it’s got to be smaller and lighter like this Sony! Enjoy your new camera, what a great pair with the R5ii. … 200-500 zoom next lol?
Thanks! I'm quite happy with my 100-300 & 600 combo :-)
I think there will be a few people who will be in your position where they dismissed the R1 due to 24mp but it such a good camera they could not resist the temptation. I tend to agree that these mark ii cameras are more refinements than innovations. The Sony 28/70 l would expect to be lighter as the Canon version came out years ago.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Very nice job on the video.
Congratulations on the R1. I always find your real world analysis very helpful. Can you please do another detailed video on the 100-300 for wildlife using both extenders? Since you now have a 24MP camera, it would be interesting to see you find this to be limiting. As a R3 user, I really don't feel that I need more since the files are so clean.
Yes, I'm planning to do so :-)
I think that Canon and Nikon make the best cameras. I don't like Sony for many reasons. I know that Sony's quality is bad. So congratulations on buying a Canon R1.
Your “Nikon” gives you a plastic bag for a lens pouch 😂. Sony started the mirrorless game and the Sony a7iii a 2018 release still competes with Nikons flagship cameras also the Canon R50 has a better hit rate than Nikons whole mirrorless line up. Overall Sony and Canon are the top contenders and now Panasonic beating Nikon in Autofocus department.
What were your problems with the sony? I like the built quality of the A1 for example
@alphaandomega2709, you should start a RUclips channel.
Sony didn't start the mirrorless game. That would be Panasonic. THE greatest camera manufacturer bar none :) The fact they don't make a £6.5k camera is reason alone 😂
Dear people, I think you are all wrong. it was Olympus/Om-systems that came onto the market with the system camera, and it is still very innovative. If Om-system develops an innovation such as pre-capture, other brands such as Canon also apply this to their camera models.
The only feature R1 interested me is that $2 GPS integrated.
😅
Wow. The R1 is cool. I am in the same boat as you that I am thinking getting a second R5 II. Since I started using the R5II, my R5 has been collecting dust. The R5II is much better for my bird and wildlife photography. Please put your new R1 to the test and show us what it can do. Thanks.
Thanks
Fabian's new camera...a Canon, of course. :) You bought it because it's a Canon.
Well a Sony won‘t fit my lenses 😅
It’s impossible to pick a FF system. I have enough saved for one but every time I am ready to buy a Sony, canon comes up with something, and viceversa. Canon’s announcement of the 70-200f2.8 that takes teleconverters made me wait because then I would have the 400mm and a faster 200mm.
If you’re just starting from scratch and wildlife/birds are your main priority I would honestly recommend looking at Nikon. I’m a Canon shooter and staying put but Nikon’s lens lineup is by far the most well-rounded for wildlife. You really can’t go wrong with Sony, Nikon or Canon though, what it ultimately comes down to at this point is cost, ergonomics/feel, and which system has the lineup of glass that best suits your needs.
@@Kirkland_SignatureThank you. I’ll take a look at what they have to offer, briefly looking, I already like their 400mm f4.5.
I’ll save you time buy Sony your back will love you. Canon is good as well. Nikon is still far behind I’d invest elsewhere
@@alphaandomega2709 haha I'd consider that opinion. I used to have nikon dslr but changed to m43 for size, and because when I did, optical resolution at my budget was very similar. But now I am looking at those g master lenses on the high res cameras with real desire.
@@dasaen I've owned Sony and Canon both, any differences between systems were pretty negligible. Can't go wrong with either!
Congratulations on purchasing the R1) As for the new Sony flagship. In fact, most of the complaints from A1 Mark 1 users were related to the things that Sony fixed in this new camera. Working autofocus with auto-recognition, improved ergonomics with an increased distance from the handle to the lens (especially if it is a large lens). Working pre-shooting mode. A stunning display that can combine the best of both worlds, this is the ability to rotate towards the subject (for bloggers) and the ability to shoot, for example, from a lower angle while maintaining the optical axis (I am not a blogger and envy the implementation of the tilt screen in the Nikon Z8). The only question is whether there is enough brightness. Or, like in old Sony cameras, it is not enough. If everything is fine with this issue, perhaps today we are seeing the best camera for shooting wildlife of all those existing on the market.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
That's definitely a gorgeous R1 camera. I hope you have fun I always loved that 1 series feel in the hand had many years of fun. These days looking for lighter am getting to be an old man... I think if the original A1 could have had a firmware update for pre-capture would have been all over it as they are going good price UK grey market and second hand.
Thanks and also „happy photography“ to you
And price? 9000€?
6500$
Finally precapture on flagship!
Canon and Sony both have it, now we are waiting for Nikon
The Canon 200-800 lens does in fact have similar background blur to that 150-400 OM f4.5 pro lens but one of the most important things people often forget about is that with the OM-1, you are looking at focusing speed at f4.5 which is so much faster than that Canon lens at f9 while the background blur is similar but the performance is not comparable.
Hmm, I disagree on focussing speed. The R5 & RF200-800 was focussing better in dark forests than the OM-1 II & 150-400. Did you experience something else?
@@FabianFoppNaturephotographyI used to own a Canon R5 with the 100-500 lens which has a f7.1 aperture at the long end. I struggle to focus in dark forest with that lens even at f7.1. Even though at that time, the R5 has pretty good eye tracking for bird, for that reason I switched to OM system’s 300 f4 and later I got the 150-400 f4.5 which gave me much better initial focus in similar situations paired with the OM-1 and OM-1 mark ii now. To be fair, I never use the 200-800 from Canon but just having used a brighter lens at 7.1 I struggled before so. But I trusted that you have use both systems quite extensively so maybe even the newer R5 mark ii, it will do better.
I find it interesting that comparative reviews of these lenses use the 45Mp FF R5, when many of the users of these lenses will actually be pairing them with cameras having very different pixel densities, namely the 24Mp FFs like the R6ii & R8, and the 32.5Mp APS-C R7, which has a pixel density equivalent to an 83Mp FF camera. With those very different cameras, the differences between the two lenses become a lot clearer: - The extra sharpness, & light (larger aperture = less noise & diffraction) of the 100-500L better feed the smaller pixels of the R7; & allow cropping that more than compensates for its shorter reach. - The longer reach of the 200-800 @ 800 gives larger images on the FF, low Mp, cameras, and their larger pixels enable better use of the narrow apertures of the lens, by showing less noise & hiding diffraction, but the images do not crop as well as those taken with the R7 & 100-500, for obvious reasons. We have been using similar combos (R7+100-500 & R6i/ii+RF800/11) for some years now, and find the results very comparable. The R6ii will also take the 1.4xTC well with the 800/11 (& by extension, the 200-800), as it does not push the noise or diffraction too high. So if you are looking to pair these lenses with anything other than an R5, please bear these facts in mind. IMO the R5 is a great "compromise" camera on pixel density, which Canon have further enhanced with some special features giving it low noise & high DR, so it works well with very different types of lens; but the more extreme cameras (in terms of pixel density) that don't have all those extra capabilities (& therefore lower price) are better paired with lenses suited to their own characteristics.
I have shot Canon FF and Panasonic Leica MFT for many years. I recently bought an OM1 and a bunch of PRO lenses. I have to say that the OM1 and the 300mm F4 ha sthe highest 'keeper ratio' of any combination I have used. I miss the dynamic range of the Canon FF and low light performance sometimes. But, I'm amazed at 20 MP and light room's AI noise reduction. Also, if Bokeh is is a little worse I can use LR to soften it. I know, I know. It's cheating. But if I can get a sharp subject with a light set of gear - then my keeper rate for wildlife really improves. Oh, yeah. Did we mention value??
I am very happy with the Nikon 180-600. And my z9. I like your real world tests in the field rather than just charts. My friend has the 400mm f2.8 and it’s incredible but it’s very expensive.
I honestly cant believe that 200-800 is little sharper. 100-500 is premium lens and in many test came ahead of 200-800 🤷 Still great video, you did a lot of job here 😊
Very useful info, and thanks. Esp. the VF views. I love your t-shirt too! Where did you get it?
Thanks! I bought it in a shop in Valencia
those ground squirrels were SO SMALL ! i would be afraid not to step on them if they were so friendly..
My only caveat to setting the shutter button for AF start is that if you set the focus by pressing the shutter button and then want to reframe without going to eye detection it will keep focusing. Reframe and touch the shutter release and you are out of focus. Not an issue for most birding situations, but I seem to have a lot of birds in bushes and also shoot other subjects where this can occasionally lead to unexpected results. Everyone is different, but I appreciate seeing these suggestions and finding ones that help me. Thanks for this video!
Thanks!
Do you happen to recall which firmware version on the Z8 for this review?
It was before bird AF was added
Sony A1MK2 for me. Because I crop most of time of my Wildlife Shot 50MP is much better compare to 24MP. Also to Add Sony Ecosystem of 3rd Party Lens option is better that can save a ton of money compared to Canon L Mount
If I buy a 6000$ camera, then I prefer to have the native lens as well 😊 especially since there is not many alternatives from third party manufacturers for fast telephoto lenses
@@FabianFoppNaturephotography agree. there is often some faults with third party lens due to incompatible software and hardware limitations like no correction, no focus breathing compensation, slower burst rates. worse IBIS performance. Sony has these limitations too.
The one setting I did not use and really want to change is the MF setting: this one is very important indeed, thank you! I am thinking about using the shutter button for AF as well with an additional button for enlarging the AF square! So leaving the back button focus as @ericvaughan is doing as well! BUT, than I will use the buffer for preshooting every time I focus with the shutter button: battery usage? Unlike using back bottom focusing.
Thanks
Fabian, if you go to the Olive menu, Customise buttons, scroll to the DoF button and change this to: Switch es cont. shooting mode. When depressed if you are shooting at say 15 or 20 fps this will 'super boost' you count to 30fps, but only whilst the DoF button is depressed.
Yes, I know that function. But in the end I prefer to use the DOF button for focus recall
This is my first Canon camera and boy does it do the job. Image quality, autofocus, dynamic range... I think it is a very nice camera for any kind of photography.
