Bass Sound Design in Ableton with the Akai Sampler Sine Test Tone | Drum and Bass, Jungle, Dubstep
In this video I show you how to make a variety of gnarly, wobbly bass timbres using the sine wave Akai test tone in Sampler.
First, I create a custom Ableton Instrument Rack with instances of the C#3 sine wave test tone from the Akai sampler series.
Then I run this through a bunch of Ableton stock effects, including Amp, Overdrive, Saturator, Auto Filter and Phaser-Flanger. Thanks to Future World Machines in the chat for the inadvertent happy accident with Doubler!
You can download the project file featuring the processing chains, the bass sounds I resampled and the demo sounds you hear at the end here: www.patreon.com/posts/bass-sound-in-121554697?Link&

this is our fave thing to do eh? :)
@HumanSynthetics it is like Meditation.
This could not have come at a better time. Thank you
Thanks so much, yeah a lot can be done with simple starting points - glad to help.
Time to revisit this video with ableton 12s new tagging system
Shout out to sparky optics. U r doing well my friend. Ditch the plucky thing . Sort out the think break by using an enveloper to tame the reverb of the room. Cut it up and get it hitting hard with processing. If u have logic use the phat fx. Bass is cool and get it dub like. Love it mate
Couple of good tracks in here, good on u all. Sorry u r wrong on the dj not playing the whole track, that is something new, a record should be able to listen from behind to end. Metropolis is a true tune or anything by goldie.
Hey there, Alex (and audience). Droneeater here from all the way over in Aotearoa New Zealand ("Aotearoa" is the Māori name for our country); from THE FUTURE. Thanks a lot for really useful feedback. Alex, you mentioned wanting to hear an acid line in there. Could you point me in the direction of what you're referring to? Re where the vocals came from - I wrote the lyrics and had two of my mates come over to lay them down. Much better singers than me and damn sexy crooning. Peace out, homies.
amazing, really interesting knowledge you provide thanks!
It’s amazing how different people produce. My way is to smoke weed throughout the process, have ash all over my gear and my mates come round for even more of a smoke, and crazy shit comes out of those. We r close to dropping a ep, 4 months. It’s bad real bad.
Yes I am from the @Endle185 school but we use booze instead of plants.
you defo need to make a big dip in the 1k area on those pads, gonna blow me iPhone speaker lol
Love this, I have done a few dub techno tracks recently... I wish the mixes I did would do better on my channel. This was good, big up! 😎😎🙌🙌
Thanks holeshot! You're close to 1k tho!! Keep at it. I think title and thumbnail make all the difference, even though I'm hit and miss at that myself! But looks like you're well on your way.
Arcologies does a sick job of those evocative thumbnails, but I think yours are on point too!
Thank you. This was very helpful. 😎
Cheers Glen, my pleasure!
this is a gold mine
Thanks! Feel like I'm scraping the surface here, but the basic stuff goes a long long way. So much is in the jam and arrangements, the overall ark of the tune. Thanks again!!
Very nice! That version of Scorpio sounds very different to the original break. Where did it come from?
Thanks! Oh gosh I'm not sure, got sent this by a mate along with a bunch of other lesser known breaks. It could well have been run through an Akai or Emu on the way over.
@ ok cheers. The search continues then!
sweet, sounds good ✨
Thank you! Appreciate the comment
Inspired by the work of Martin Stürtzer, particularly his 'Phase Transform' album. Been listening to a lot of Priori et al as well, but the sound design in their productions is a bit more left field at points. Any other dub techno artists you can recommend?

@18:40 prior to setting levels, when played, wavetable just plays the sine, then @18:48 after levels sorted, wavetable plays the square but resets to sine when not played. But you havent changed the waveposition slider nor does it (waveposition slider )change when played, but a square wave is being generated, how did you do this?
Eagle eyed!! Great spot - took me a second to work out what had happened - my MIDI keyboard has a mod slider on it that has a touch ribbon. I must've brushed it when I took my hand off the piano keyboard to use my laptop keyboard. I'm pretty sure the mod strip affects the position of the wavetable by default.
In short - by accident haha ;)
Update: I actually have the osc pos 1 mod set to 100 in the Mod column of the modulation matrix!
@@HumanSynthetics Haha, thats brilliant! I was following along because the final sound result was great, but got so caught up in that. Ashamedly, a little too obsessively.
@@HumanSynthetics Ah ok. Let me go open Ableton :)
Really lovely idea and implementation! I love randomly generated bits on days where the creative juices struggle to start flowing. Having one or two good ideas come out of a generator can give you a fresh base to build something on. I also find that I tend to repeat myself if I try to write stuff from scratch all th time, so spinning the wheel until something good comes out is a fantastic method to avoid sounding the same all the time.
Nice one!! This sums it up perfectly! I completely agree, even one good result from something generative can be all you need.
hey, my slicing pre set isn't showing in my slicing pre sets when I try and slice to new midi. any help greatly appreciated. never had this issue before but for some reason not showing up now lol
hmmm - couldn't be you've updated Live since making it? It's definitely visible under your Slicing Defaults in Ableton's User Library?
@@HumanSynthetics yes it was visible. nice one mate, I managed to figure it out. I'd been using a new laptop that I imported all my stuff from my desktop and think I accidentally changed default location of user libraries on my devices somehow.
Sick! This requires Live Suite though right? Standard doesn’t have Sampler :(
You're absolutely right, and something I missed when making the vid. You can bolt on sampler to Standard as an additional purchase. A work around might be slicing to drum rack? You could get the same results, albeit a little differently. Thanks tho ;)
Digging what you had by the end here! 😎🙌
Cheers! Yeah think it didn't sound too bad against the clock - I'd love to spend some more time on this version of the Scorpio break, was really pleased with how it came out.
The ultimate thing with a tune is the 5 minutes to go past with out u realising and u feel u have been robed at the end because it wasn’t longer. Crack that and it’s a tune.
its def a comb filter. using the renoise stock one rn and its p identical and easy to tune
but this sounds so much like the akaizer, v sick tutorial im def gnna use this technique
Thanks! I think there are a few ways to get pretty close to Sully's sound. I know just use a stock delay with very short delay time and high feedback. The feedback controls the resonance, with some additional reverb you get pretty close to that 5ives sound! The break, and real fine tuning of the delay controls can drastically alter the sound. I'm not sure exactly how comb filtering works in terms of the science, but it could be its introducing some sort of a delay a la karplus strong, which is what Sully said the effect was when I asked him on Instagram haha.
Well done everyone who submitted their music, thought there were some great tunes. Thanks to Alex for taking the time to check them out, nice one mate.
My pleasure Distant Lands. Wholeheartedly agree!
Whats the effect chain on return C? My guess is a delay with ~50% feedback, but whats the delay time set to?
I think you're right! I have a few stock Echo devices on my return channels in Ableton, think the one you're referring to is either 1/4 dotted, or 1/8. Probably the first of those settings, from memory.
Personally, I prefer the sound of Vari-Mu compressors on drums. The way they affect second-order harmonics is very different from optical compressors.
Thanks, I'm always keen to improve my use of compression, I don't think I have a vari-mu style compressor in my arsenal - any good ones you could recommend that I can give a spin? Cheers!
Yes!!!
At 22:10 about making content. That struck a chord with me,
It's a long road to get back to yourself haha. I think you've got to go through this stuff, imitation and copying to learn, but the best music is just being yourself.
I like your work. I like your attention to the details important to releasing good music. Inspirational for me. 👏
It may seem maddening at points, but I can hear the difference and think it's worth it. Not always, but sometimes and knowing when's enough is important. That said I do love these bits at the end, digging into the details.
Thanks!
Hey thanks so much for the super chat!! It means the world that people enjoy me just making tunes and talking about it. I'm glad it connected. Big up!
Needs a new feature to import classic Rex files, Rx2
Good shout! That would be nice, I've got a bunch of those and would save some time.
These edits are great mate, more of these in the future please. :) ✌
Big up G! Really appreciate that - you of all people know the time sunk into editing, but I think with practice I'll just quicker and quicker at editing the highlights... this was a sick stream to do that with!
@@HumanSynthetics Gotta get those premier pro editing Hotkeys down. then you speed through :)
@@groovining actually need to learn/apply those! Pretty happy with the shortcuts but you can assign macros??
I'm in the US, but when you did your Shack Up edits I think I heard Paradox's chair squeak around with curiosity all the way from Lithuania. Thanks for documenting this process. Your, Groovin, and Stranjah's vids have been helpful in showing how to workflow with Amigo. This MIDI trick is super useful. I hope to figure out how to do this in Logic. I think I can drag and drop the MIDI chops from Maschine and then time up with Amigo slicing.
I have a Maschine on the way from ebay, I already have this and many more as rex files already chopped. It will be nice to trigger new patterns from the pads but still all can be done in the computer. I mainly got it for easier sampling and chopping on the hardware but it does a lot more, I need it now to play on.
Ahh nice, yeah something real to hit makes a huge difference. I couldn't do without my MIDI controllers. Hope you have lots of fun when it arrives!
Well... thank you so much for the nice comment... I couldn't ask for more really! I've been deep on a Paradox tip the last year of so (fave tracks 'Back from Eternity' with Seba and 'Atka'). I love not only the way his grooves sound, but just how funky they are. Like intricate but not too much so, and all the while so soulful. I love this way of working with breaks, and I love the additional flavour Amigo adds, this first I wanted to do with it is integrate this way of working. And always my pleasure sharing the insights and learning. We all apply it in a different way, and that's the joy of music. Hope you figure it out in Logic, I'm sure if you do others would love to know how you do it. Thanks again :)
@@HumanSynthetics Hopefully comes this morning. Only £164 MKIII. I found the maschine can load rex and hopefully the midi as well, but coming back out and slicing into Amigo is too much of a ballache for me. I think would be better off progamming them first and bouncing to audio and loading in amigo if needed to. But if amigo could do rex or something similar then I would trigger amigo from the maschine instead.
bro this is VERY helpful thank you
My pleasure man! Glad it's been useful, I'm just finishing up the layered breaks video edit from the same livestream. Cheers
Nice workflow bookmarking this for Ron 😎
I deliberated about making this into a shorter video edit, but glad I did. Really appreciated the feedback, I'm sure others want to do this kind of thing and it might not be obvious straight away.
Nice one. Also Scorpio is so versatile.
For me at the Moment the Alligator Bogaloo is my favorite Break, also the whole SoulPride. I am totaly adicted to chop Long Breaks into sections Like kick + hat, snare + shuffle and so on. In January i will send you some new racks If you are interrested in.
Yes please GL! I loved the og devices you sent me, I thought they were really smart and sounded great. I'd be delighted to spotlight them here for you again. I completely agree about Scorpio. I love that snare!! So big and metallic. I haven't heard the Alligator Boogaloo - I'll check that out asap.
Cheers GL - 'chopping breaks is a meditation' - get that on a tshirt I reckon!
Would you spend the time doing this? Do you think the end result is worth the time?
I'm a complete newbie to this sort of thing, but for me I tend to just slice using the equal option instead of transient and that keeps the slight offsets in the original sample. Lazy/efficient and with extra groove, win-win! 😛 I appreciate the additional effort that goes into this method though!
spot on...
Cheers @boootros, glad it hit them mark ;)
👏👏👏
Ace video!
Ableton sucks
Ableton is very good
I would like to see the Reese being higher in the mix. We all do this because of levels. Snare is so big with that verb. It’s like the kick takes a back seat. Different styles different results.
Thanks Endle, really helpful feedback. Actually tested it out tonight and you're bang on about the bass - someone else picked up on exactly that. Actually found the kick pretty decent but kind of agree with you about the snare. Balancing the two is bloody hard haha especially with the break. Appreciate the feedback!
This is gold. Big up.
Ah cheers! My pleasure
2 amazing tunes, can't believe what you can achieve in 2 hours! And love the way you arrange things just by jamming it out. Wicked!
Cheers, thanks so much - it can be hit and miss, think the pressure of coming up with something reasonably finished in front of an audience helps! And lots and lots of practise - a lot of terrible sessions have come before haha. Yeah the jamming thing is kind of integral to my workflow, I've just got used to it over the years and it works for me. Don't get me wrong - I spend a TONNE of time after futzing with midi and god knows what else, but it really captures that initial vibe quick. Thanks again :)
Nice one. Thank you.
Cheers Golab! Fun little generative technique
MASSIVE MA MA MA MA MASSIVE

Big up Holeshot!! Really appreciate the kind words, keeps me going ;)
