Tough Layered Breaks with @Cableguys Snapback plugin & Amigo 2.0 | jungle, drum and bass, drumfunk
In this video I show you how to use MIDI to trigger @cableguys Snapback with a break chopped slice by slice in the Amigo Sampler 2.0 to create tough, tight layered breaks.

This was edited from my Amigo Sampler 2.0 Jungle Beat Battle vs. @groovining which you can watch in full here: ruclips.net/user/liveoQFv7IOnWts
I’m using two instances of Snapback paired with Ableton’s External Instrument device for MIDI routing: one for layering the kick, one for layering the snare.
You can use as many instances as you need. I've created other breaks where I've had the hi-hat triggering a tambourine layer, or similar. Experiment.
You can watch how I prepare and slice the breaks...

A quick, first look at the *demo* version of @Cableguys Snapback plugin on the 'Scorpio' break. I explored Snapback on my regular Wednesday livestream here: ruclips.net/video/J3GSX1lMoKE/видео.html This was very much a cursory first look at the plugin, not a deep dive showcasing multiple use cases. Cablebuys' own product page has an excellent overview of the plugin and all of its features. 🟣 I ...

Sometimes I finish music | | Finnish zithers, amens, 808s, tape divas | 'Kantele' track breakdown
The ultimate thing with a tune is the 5 minutes to go past with out u realising and u feel u have been robed at the end because it wasn’t longer. Crack that and it’s a tune.
its def a comb filter. using the renoise stock one rn and its p identical and easy to tune
but this sounds so much like the akaizer, v sick tutorial im def gnna use this technique
Well done everyone who submitted their music, thought there were some great tunes. Thanks to Alex for taking the time to check them out, nice one mate.
My pleasure Distant Lands. Wholeheartedly agree!
Whats the effect chain on return C? My guess is a delay with ~50% feedback, but whats the delay time set to?
Personally, I prefer the sound of Vari-Mu compressors on drums. The way they affect second-order harmonics is very different from optical compressors.
Thanks, I'm always keen to improve my use of compression, I don't think I have a vari-mu style compressor in my arsenal - any good ones you could recommend that I can give a spin? Cheers!
Yes!!!
At 22:10 about making content. That struck a chord with me,
It's a long road to get back to yourself haha. I think you've got to go through this stuff, imitation and copying to learn, but the best music is just being yourself.
I like your work. I like your attention to the details important to releasing good music. Inspirational for me. 👏
It may seem maddening at points, but I can hear the difference and think it's worth it. Not always, but sometimes and knowing when's enough is important. That said I do love these bits at the end, digging into the details.
Thanks!
Hey thanks so much for the super chat!! It means the world that people enjoy me just making tunes and talking about it. I'm glad it connected. Big up!
Needs a new feature to import classic Rex files, Rx2
Good shout! That would be nice, I've got a bunch of those and would save some time.
These edits are great mate, more of these in the future please. :) ✌
Big up G! Really appreciate that - you of all people know the time sunk into editing, but I think with practice I'll just quicker and quicker at editing the highlights... this was a sick stream to do that with!
I'm in the US, but when you did your Shack Up edits I think I heard Paradox's chair squeak around with curiosity all the way from Lithuania. Thanks for documenting this process. Your, Groovin, and Stranjah's vids have been helpful in showing how to workflow with Amigo. This MIDI trick is super useful. I hope to figure out how to do this in Logic. I think I can drag and drop the MIDI chops from Maschine and then time up with Amigo slicing.
I have a Maschine on the way from ebay, I already have this and many more as rex files already chopped. It will be nice to trigger new patterns from the pads but still all can be done in the computer. I mainly got it for easier sampling and chopping on the hardware but it does a lot more, I need it now to play on.
Ahh nice, yeah something real to hit makes a huge difference. I couldn't do without my MIDI controllers. Hope you have lots of fun when it arrives!
Well... thank you so much for the nice comment... I couldn't ask for more really! I've been deep on a Paradox tip the last year of so (fave tracks 'Back from Eternity' with Seba and 'Atka'). I love not only the way his grooves sound, but just how funky they are. Like intricate but not too much so, and all the while so soulful. I love this way of working with breaks, and I love the additional flavour Amigo adds, this first I wanted to do with it is integrate this way of working. And always my pleasure sharing the insights and learning. We all apply it in a different way, and that's the joy of music. Hope you figure it out in Logic, I'm sure if you do others would love to know how you do it. Thanks again :)
@@HumanSynthetics Hopefully comes this morning. Only £164 MKIII. I found the maschine can load rex and hopefully the midi as well, but coming back out and slicing into Amigo is too much of a ballache for me. I think would be better off progamming them first and bouncing to audio and loading in amigo if needed to. But if amigo could do rex or something similar then I would trigger amigo from the maschine instead.
bro this is VERY helpful thank you
My pleasure man! Glad it's been useful, I'm just finishing up the layered breaks video edit from the same livestream. Cheers
Nice workflow bookmarking this for Ron 😎
I deliberated about making this into a shorter video edit, but glad I did. Really appreciated the feedback, I'm sure others want to do this kind of thing and it might not be obvious straight away.
Nice one. Also Scorpio is so versatile.
For me at the Moment the Alligator Bogaloo is my favorite Break, also the whole SoulPride. I am totaly adicted to chop Long Breaks into sections Like kick + hat, snare + shuffle and so on. In January i will send you some new racks If you are interrested in.
Yes please GL! I loved the og devices you sent me, I thought they were really smart and sounded great. I'd be delighted to spotlight them here for you again. I completely agree about Scorpio. I love that snare!! So big and metallic. I haven't heard the Alligator Boogaloo - I'll check that out asap.
Cheers GL - 'chopping breaks is a meditation' - get that on a tshirt I reckon!
Would you spend the time doing this? Do you think the end result is worth the time?
I'm a complete newbie to this sort of thing, but for me I tend to just slice using the equal option instead of transient and that keeps the slight offsets in the original sample. Lazy/efficient and with extra groove, win-win! 😛 I appreciate the additional effort that goes into this method though!
spot on...
Cheers @boootros, glad it hit them mark ;)
👏👏👏
Ace video!
Ableton sucks
Ableton is very good
I would like to see the Reese being higher in the mix. We all do this because of levels. Snare is so big with that verb. It’s like the kick takes a back seat. Different styles different results.
Thanks Endle, really helpful feedback. Actually tested it out tonight and you're bang on about the bass - someone else picked up on exactly that. Actually found the kick pretty decent but kind of agree with you about the snare. Balancing the two is bloody hard haha especially with the break. Appreciate the feedback!
This is gold. Big up.
Ah cheers! My pleasure
2 amazing tunes, can't believe what you can achieve in 2 hours! And love the way you arrange things just by jamming it out. Wicked!
Cheers, thanks so much - it can be hit and miss, think the pressure of coming up with something reasonably finished in front of an audience helps! And lots and lots of practise - a lot of terrible sessions have come before haha. Yeah the jamming thing is kind of integral to my workflow, I've just got used to it over the years and it works for me. Don't get me wrong - I spend a TONNE of time after futzing with midi and god knows what else, but it really captures that initial vibe quick. Thanks again :)
Nice one. Thank you.
Cheers Golab! Fun little generative technique
MASSIVE MA MA MA MA MASSIVE
Salute!
Love your vids, and your tunes... big up
Big up Holeshot!! Really appreciate the kind words, keeps me going ;)
I did some more work on this one: ruclips.net/user/liveKpURfUf0LEs
Cheers legend! Had a wicked time doing another one of these. Your tune was fire as usual. Big Ups 🔥❤️
Me too man! As was yours - I think the thing I enjoy most is hearing how different the final pieces are!
Went and saw valve sound system Friday. Dilly and benny etc. your vibe is more what is going on on the dance floor. Good job.
Aww yeah, bet that was sick! I'd love to experience it. Closest I've got is the Sinai system which was crazy. That is praise indeed tho Endle, nice one!
The winner is……… human syn. Good job
haha nice one! got lucky this time ;) accepted with pride!
Cool Like IT very much.
Cheers Golab, gotta hear more of yours on a feedback stream soon!
Well done gents, impressive what you got laid down in a couple of hours.
Cheers DL - really pleased with how the breaks came out here
Nice!
This is so good! Thanks man.
My pleasure - really pleased people still get stuff from the older streams
Thanks for the feedback on my track Alex and Ned, appreciate you taking the time. I know it was a long one, need to rein it in a bit! Some great tunes from the other producers as well.👍
Absolute pleasure DL. One of the things I always try to do with my music is to 'listen past' where it is now - to hear the potential, rather than where it is at the moment. Hopefully we fed back in that spirit! It's a leap of faith sending music for people to listen to, or at least I find it like that! So, really - it should be us thanking you for sending music over! Also, I reckon EVERY producer comes up against exactly this thing, of the tune maybe going on for a bit, or knowing you want to cut it back a bit. That said, I really loved the world you created, same for the 'Quite Cool' tune as well! Great work DL.
This is sick!
Thanks so much! Need to do some ambient New Agey stuff again soon.
Cheers Alex and Ned for playing and commenting on my track and big up the other producers 😎👍
@@BeatsPacific Killer track! Wicked. Like Ned said, getting all these samples to gel together couldn't have been an easy feat, but I was wondering how much of it you actually played with proper instruments... Sax is splendid! Now that I've got your correct name I can look for more of your work!
Mate your tune was the PERFECT opener! Faultless. No wonder it won Dubplate Warz!
Big up Beats Pacific!
Where can I find first track? beat specific how sweat it was?
Link in the description now! Dubplate Wars winning track!
Nice wub man
Thought it would be fun to edit down some longer stream stuff into shorter bit sized bits. I'm always making things like this that would probably be useful for people to see how it's done, even if it is seemingly quick and simple!
And thanks! Spend too much time making wubs
@@HumanSynthetics haha you can never make to many wubs 👍🏼😂
I bought Snapback when it was on offer as it came out. Not had a chance to play with it much yet. The other one I want to dig into more is Steinberg Backbone, its quite a bit older but looks dope for deconstructing sounds.
Backbone is superb. The more you use it, the more you build up your own library of transient and body segments that you can recombine in different ways, giving you a sound that's specifically yours.
@@joechapman8208 Yeah, I can totally see its got so much potential.
Yeah nice man - I need to check Backbone. I've been enjoying Snapback immensely, especially using MIDI to trigger it. No latency!
I picked this up but haven't had a chance to dive into it yet. It looks really interesting. Between this and the update to Amigo, some cool new toys are out.
Hopefully I can demo more with it, I've managed to get it working really well with MIDI, much tighter on the sound. Getting some great results. Need to get updated Amigo into the mix! Also updated to Soundtoys 5.4, with Superplate. A lot of stuff to dig into!
808 two notes big bass. Then do what I want from there.
I need to do this more!
Nice one. Btw. What IS this Diffuser?
Haha, well spotted! I needed some background footage so dug into my archive. I've got loads of me just messing around at my desk - the idea was to use it for footage in longer videos. I guess you could say it's my own library of stock footage!
How would you use Snapback? I thought it could be good on 808 bass too! This is an edit from regular Wednesday livestream: ruclips.net/video/J3GSX1lMoKE/видео.html 🦂 Check out the Scorpio break here: ruclips.net/video/QhvUZeB7ztQ/видео.html
I'm enjoying this one! I haven't thought of anything spectacularly different to do with it. I already loved Texture by Devious Machines for making drum breaks sound modernised and more three-dimensional, so I welcome this kind of thing. There are other options, of course, but I love how clear the UI is and the amount of automatable parameters. Being that little bit faster than other solutions is always a good thing.
Some great techniques in here mate. I love the choppy slightly gated drums. Also messing with the hi-hats with decay & velocity :) Drums have a great tone in general. 2:21:19 dope 🚀🔥
Thanks man!! Yeah, the Amen was timestretched and then chopped up - gives it an unusual timbre, enhanced with the layers through Snapback. I think like 75% of everything I do is fiddling with drum details like this haha. That's where the track is for me really, at least where I'm at creatively rn.
grand evening
nice one pg! yeah a good one here :)

Sounding awesome ❤
thanks a lot, the practise was worth it I reckon :)
