Thank you so much! I really think this is the pinnacle of chopping breaks for me, this hit by hit way. It's timely, and fiddly, but the investment in time is nearly always worth it, for my ears and tastes at least. Haha, sometimes it just so adequately describes what's happening! That or another fave: squonky.
What type of akai is there on table. Apc??
It is! ACP Mini Mk1. Still going strong, still love it, although it can be a bit glitchy with my current set up. I've used a Push in the past, but it's just too heavy and I like the APC's faders, even if they are a bit plasticky.
What kind of midi controller do you use?
I still love my APC Mini Mk1. It's no frills, lightweight and has faders. I love being able to adjust volume with a fader, rather than a rotary knob. For my keyboard, back when I did this stream (probably during covid's first winter), I also used my Casio CDP 100 which is a full scale weighted piano keyboard. I did love being able to play parts in on a weighted keyboard like this. Now I use a much smaller NI Komplete 32 MIDI keyboard. It's not as good as the full keyboard, but does fit on my desk. I think having some kind of controller is invaluable, just being able to hit something, or press some pads, or keys or whatever. Also being able to trigger lots of clips at once that aren't necessarily in a scene, I do that all the time. If I could only have the one it would be the APC Mini.
How on earth do you manage to get the soul pride chopped that cleanly?! I'm having such a headache trying to get everything to work properly. Do you do a lot of warp mode manipulation before you put it into the sampler?
Haha thanks! Yeah it's a tricky break to work with. It's also quite long and there are a lot of parts you _could_ work with. The snare strokes are also quite brushy sounding, making them a bit harder to handle. I can't remember exactly how I chopped it here, but some parts could be choppage style, hit by hit, with other parts just preserving longer phrases of the break. I tend to avoid any 'destructive' warp manipulation before I do any kind of choppage, or processing - mainly because I find I can hear the effect of such manipulation: re-pitch and timestretching notwithstanding. Generally, it's a lot of trial and error, using a bit of this technique and a bit of that technique, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Also practice - just going back to the same break time and time again and seeing what I've missed, or what I do differently. It's all iterative in that way, small improvements over time.

Aw thank you so much! Think the pad is coming from Lunaris 2, a Kontakt patch that works with the free Kontakt player, amazing for pads of all sorts! And I'm a pad junkie really. Only if you dig the sound! I did get these for free with the purpose of recording a review, but since doing that they've remained pretty high up in my sonic arsenal list. I would highly recommend them (in fact all of the monomono M4L stuff) if you're after Ableton-centric EQ/tape saturation/LA2 style optical compression effects. I know the dev too and they really go into the nitty gritty modelling the actually irl og gear, and all in Max where anyone can open it up and see what's happening. I do get a small kick back if anyone uses the affiliate links to purchase stuff but that's where it ends. I'm always keen to try M4L native stuff that's a bit more akin to something you'd see in a VST that's a lot more and I think monomono nailed it with these. I thought that would be a good thing to share :)

Well in reality you'd have more than 4 instances - I think you could have 30~ samples loaded into memory in octamed and then just swap between them on the 4 channels per step...
Thanks Trevor - I feel I need to actually try making something on an actual Amiga to properly understand the benefits and limitations - and to speak from real life experience! I guess the way a tracker plays back samples is more sympathetic to a sampler like Amigo, or on the Amiga, rather Ableton, where loading c.30 Amigos would be quite hard to navigate, especially in like a Drum Rack, which might give a comparable sequencing experience! I have looked at Amiga's on eBay and Akais aren't as pricey as I thought they'd be... maybe one day when I have some more space! Cheers

Amazing video. Did you have a producer mentor and a who are your jungle dnb influences?
Thanks so much :) Ah, good questions! I guess I'd say I'm largely self taught with the DAW, but that would be discounting the wealth of sick content across the internet, particularly from the likes of Ned Rush, Stranjah, Groovin in G, Thought-Forms, and others. I learnt a lot about mixing from Dave Pensado's videos and Recording Revolution, even if they're more band focussed. My life background is as a guitarist and live performer, and as a chorister earlier in life ha. I've been playing most of my life in one form or another, bands, or on my own, and this has definitely given me a leg up across all my electronic, DAW based stuff. This included recording in analogue and digital studios, where I got to work with experienced engineers. I also studied classical guitar and did my exams, so I have that perspective too, which I try to use to inform my music, not dictate it. I love music theory and pondering why and how music does what it does to us as human beings - I think that touches on the meaning of life for us here and now, or a sense of beyondness that speaks to the human experience, as with all art, really. DNB jungle wise, I got into all of that through my mates, especially at uni where we used to go to Hospitality nights, and Breakthru here in Birmingham. So, it was largely liquid and jump up then, with some techier stuff. Back then it was producers like Logistics, High Contrast, Commix, that I noticed, along with Pendulum's early stuff, especially tracks like 'Vault'. I also really loved minimal house and tech that was everywhere in 2006/7. Birmingham had a great scene for stuff like that. I've always just loved to go to nights, or listen to mixes, and just be inspired by the overall vibe of stuff I've heard. I can often remember it all, and this informs how I produce - it won't necessarily be one producer I'm really digging into. That said - some of my fave jungle/dnb producers atm are Paradox (especially his Alaska tracks), Seba, Photek, Fracture, PFM, Arcane, Tim Reaper, ASC, love all the stuff on Deep Jungle Recs too, Subjects, Kid Lib, Phineus II, Dwarde, Orca, I like mad neuro stuff like Current Value too ... really there are so many, and I'm influenced by so many different types of music it all kind of merges together. I've got to shout out producers on RUclips too, especially the likes of arcologies who is just totally my vibe it's kind of doppelganger haha. I find if I get too into any one musician, I end up trying to copy them, so I'll often just listen to mixes and not try to read the tracklist! I love all electronic music, all music really, and I just love finding new weird stuff to get into, jungle dnb or otherwise. Also my mates send me lots of new stuff - good to have a good circle of music friends to keep you inspired. Got to say, I think a background in guitar shred fuels my breakbeat nitty grittiness, I love fast technical sounding stuff lol. Hope this gives an insight, and thanks for asking me to talk about myself haha. Thanks again :)

Ha this is amazing to me. The way I work, and what I bang on about on stream, I try to make it DAW/equipment agnostic. The creative process knows no bounds in this respect. And largely you can do the same thing across so much gear, in fact it can help to try and transfer one way of working in any given DAW, Or on an MPC, to other bits of gear, or DAWs. Thanks! You don't see it much now do you? I got it cos I read Sully liked Steam Pipe, which is a great stock synth in it. Tbh, I just use presets, but given there are so many, and so many third party devices in the Reaktor community, you can easily find new sounds its unlikely anyone else has used. Big fan of Kontakt too!
@@HumanSynthetics I've used Steampipe to make this amazing feedback sound that I can key track to actual scales. Much better than hardening Ableton's Return Signals for random feedback IMO.

In logic we have the new version of camel fat, it has crazy stuff in it, filter section has one called gritty. Turn up the res and drive after saturation in tal for a smashed sound that u get from the old days. Must be something similar in abelton.
Sick! Reckon roar could be the device for that. I have looked at the standalone camel fat before, looks mad. Also, I've got the TAL! Loving it, especially the resampling. Been looking at s3000xls too, cheaper than I thought they'd be but don't have the space atm. One day?!
Tal is bad to use as it has no undo button. So when u chop up a break u have to save the whole project every cut just in case u screw up. But it’s worth it for the sound that comes out of it.
@@Endle185 haha yeah I've noticed that! I've been creating my own presets for anything I chop in there - thanks for the heads up. Also some of the presets that come with it are pretty sick. I've been blown away by the sound of it tho, and comparing directly against Sampler, it's a one horse race. Lovely interface to it as well, and can be scaled up and down easily.

How do u change between sounds like the stretched snare that hit only sometimes and not for all the break
You have to program a different MIDI note for each of the separate sounds. It can be fiddly and time consuming, but worth it! :) Hope that helps, let me know if not.

Alex, could you do a video for your workflow using multiple breaks at a time? Do you create sampler chains with specific velocities for specific chains?
Hey bupkis, you've read my mind! This is something I've been obsessing over lately. I often use many breaks in tunes, layered, but often I'm just employing EQ to filter out the low end of whatever is the secondary break. I'm keen to really advance things here, to create my own breaks using slices and phrases from many other breakbeat samples. I recently completed my 'Make Your Own Jungle Live Set' tutorial series on Patreon (this isn't a sell!) which is the format I'd like to follow to explore 'Layering Breaks' - I say explore as really I feel it's an area of my production I could, and want to improve. Also, the aim of doing a longer form series like this will be that I can make a properly researched, informed short video at the end of it. But in the meantime, maybe when I've really started to make progress I can cover what I've learnt so far on stream? As for your question about sampler chains, I do make use of different velocities in my patterns sometimes, whether I've chopped the break to a Simpler, Sampler, or Drum Rack. There are so many ways to approach chopping and I would encourage regular practice to explore all of them and find out what you connect with most, and makes the process most enjoyable. But, in short - yes and yes :)

Breaks are a funny thing, no one does it right anymore, they crush a 120 Bpm in to a 170 bpm, leaving the hit short and the gap in between in? That’s not drum n bass. Leaving it less aggressive
The break is the tune. Then everything else is around it.

what's the pad patch in the intro
A couple of Groovin in G samples! From his New Horizon pack, I think? Vocal is from an old 90s pack. Tbh I just pulled this all together quickly when I thought it might be nice to have some ambient music to intro the stream. Most of the sounds are going into fx of some sort too, on the return channels.

Hey Jesse, thanks so much for this. I love making music, but I also love helping others in their musical endeavours. It's always great to hear when things 'click'. That's a great idea! I actually used a mouse highlighter on my most recent stream, and will make a habit of it for the future. Keystrokes I have tried before in tutorials I've filmed, but it can get quite hectic as I do a lot of them! To me, and I'm sure it's the same with every producer - you often only hear what's 'missing', or where the gaps are.
