Really lovely idea and implementation! I love randomly generated bits on days where the creative juices struggle to start flowing. Having one or two good ideas come out of a generator can give you a fresh base to build something on. I also find that I tend to repeat myself if I try to write stuff from scratch all th time, so spinning the wheel until something good comes out is a fantastic method to avoid sounding the same all the time.
I love how deep you went with this! I really enjoy these random ways of starting ideas off. Also interesting how good it sounds timing all the bass hits to the drums hits. Keep them rolling dude✌
Thanks man! Yeah, felt maybe a bit too deep at points... I'm sure you get this, but to the point where it's like 'this is going to end up being a film' rather than a tutorial. I've mentioned this elsewhere but it's difficult to talk about music, without needing to pull in everything else about music haha - so much doesn't quite fit watertight without having to refer to other musical concepts. But yeah thank you!! It was something that really stood out in Kid Lib's stuff, how his amen tearouts have that locked 808 thing happening at the same time. Certainly slays over a big system! Cheers man, I will!
Bunch of good ideas here! I like the idea of splitting the scale into root-fifth-octave vs “other notes” and using probability to make musical phrases. I tend to stay in a pentatonic for basslines for the same reason but you are doing something similar with this rack. I like the idea of using non ghost notes from a break to create the midi for a bassline. And I like the bass hit rack on C1 with a “selects” macro. Three different but useful ideas! Cheers!
Thank you @dumafuji! Yeah, it kind of evolved as I thought more about it. Me too with pentatonic, with pitches that low, it's quite hard to discern the difference between close intervals. On some early hardcore/jungle stuff you can hear where they didn't necessarily care about bass notes being true to key. Glad it's hit the spot and thanks for the comment.
Wow!! Praise indeed, thanks so much. I did think in hindsight it might be a bit unwieldy, but sometimes you've got to just test these mad theories out! Thanks again.
Thanks @sparkytmp I appreciate that - right up until publishing I thought about shelving the idea because of complexity - early edits had me demoing other ways of doing this but I was like 'this is just too much for people; haha. But glad you're gonna stick with it, hmu if I can help.
Wow thank you! I've got more ideas for 808 stuff, perhaps breaking down the theory a little more, and some tips for enhancing the sound in mixes. I'm certainly having a blast trying to condense this stuff down into theory, Ableton application, usability, actually being cool and something people would like. So I'm delighted to hear it's working. Thanks.
@@HumanSynthetics No mate, far from it. I struggle with really technical stuff sometimes, so it’s nice to have someone- such as yourself, explain it/ quantify it in such a succinct fashion. Kudos!
@@BlissfulWizard82 thanks so much! i think the things about musical key and rhythm really make a difference to bass lines however you're programming them and regardless of making devices like this. Really more appropriate for a 'better 808 bass lines' video perhaps.
I find skirting the line between well phrased musical results and aleatoric nonsense using generative MIDI is a fine one. Does this work for you? Maybe it suggest other ideas... you could certainly use it with any type of sound coming out the other end. Hope you find something fun and/or useful here :)
Yeah let me know how you get on! I go through a bit of a hellish circle trying to work out exactly what to include, as it's very hard to talk about anything musical without needing to reference ALL music haha. It'd work well with hip hop and slower breaks stuff for sure, like lofi too.
@@HumanSynthetics You can't please everyone, sometimes a starting point is all someone needs and this is perfect for that. You made it for jungle let someone else turn it to techno, dubstep, electro, etc etc.

I said that hoping you'd comment! 'We're not worthy!'

Amazing video, haven't seen something this game changing since Ned Rush's original jungle generator rack!

Lost me in the technicality at some stage, but looking forward to slowly getting my head around it. Cheers.

This is definitely one of your best videos, Alex. A lot of things to work with.

Crazy insights man! Thanks for sharing your wisdom :)
Thanks so much! A rising tide lifts all ships :) glad to share whatever I can
Loving your videos mate. Keep em coming!
Thanks so much @cyanclouds! This was a bit of a techy one, thought it might just be too hard to use - so I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

This is awesome I'm definitely creating this rack thanks 🙏🙏👍👍
Cheers Nathan, glad to hear it's inspired. Always 100% encourage people trying to make it from scratch. Let me know how you get on!
Awesome vid, gonna try it with some other genres. TY
