I saw what fruit trees we had below our cabin in Matagalpa, Nicaragua: citrus, coffee, mamey sapote
The time finally came for us to say farewell to our cabin on the road between Matagalpa and Jinotega. After realizing that we had a lot more fruit trees around us than I initially thought, I saw a young mamey sapote. Since the tree was only a few years old, it wasn't producing fruit yet. I still had a mamey fruit that I bought in Leon, so I've planted the seed in the garden before leaving... Who knows, maybe there will be another mamey sapote tree there when we come back! We even managed to spot a sloth in one of the trees but sadly it's not visible on the recording.

I went deep into the woods in Matagalpa, Nicaragua and this happened | Hiking in La Selva Negra

Once I hit the depth of the hiking trails, it was obvious that I was in the middle of an extraordinary ecosystem. La Selva Negra has a primary cloud forest on its property and the most difficult of trails will go to altitudes of up to 1,500 meters. Many different species of exotic birds can be seen in these woods, including the three-wattled bell bird, the long-tailed manakin and of course, the...

Instead of taking a bus on the main highway, I walked on a village road from our cabin to La Selva Negra! It was an exhilarating experience, climbing almost 400 meters to reach my final destination, which is at 1270 meters above sea level. The estate was founded by a German couple from Bavaria and presently includes a farm, coffee and cacao plantations as well as lodging and restaurants for gue...

I realized that a mamey sapote starts producing fruit only after about 7-8 years... who would've thought?
Would you go for a hike along these muddy trails? Please let me know in the comments.
I had to buy a pair of rubber boots. I ruined my good hiking shoes, and ended up with my feet wet all the time. I got here shortly before the rainy season.
Nice! I'll be there in a little over a week. Really looking forward to it. Do I have to bring a dollar for the drunk kid? lol
Haha, only if you refuse to drink from his bottle ;)
@@LeoJaramaz Okay, so I was in Las Penitas a few days ago on my trip to Leon and I swear I might have seen the exact same drunk guys. lol. They didn't come up to me.
I actually came up to them... After a long walk on the beach I was looking for a passage to access the street. They just happened to be drinking there on their parents' property and the kid told me that I can walk across the land if I take a sip from his dirty bottle, lol
The beach is smaller cuse its a bay
Do you know what kind of hawk I see every day, that has wings that are about 1/2 white?
Hi Tim, thank you so much for commenting. It could be the short-tailed hawk... or maybe the pearl kite. What color is the rest of the bird's body?
@@LeoJaramaz I think it is a female short tail hawk, now that I looked at some pictures. The chest is dark. I see the mail has a white chest. Sometimes I see 2 birds, but mostly I see only 1.Two days ago there were 2 of them went over our heads making a lot of noise. Probably the male chasing the female. It was like a jet going over.
If you’re like me and you enjoy wilderness as well as tropical agriculture, you’ll love La Selva Negra!
I have been to Matagalpa a lot, but never to Selva Negra. It will be on the top of my list of places to visit. We looked at some properties outside of Matagalpa, towards San Ramon, and I like the area.
@@TiminNicaragua I've heard great things about San Ramon.
Hermoso Nicaragua
We have 2 orange birds, knock on our window every morning about 5:30 am. I think they are here year round. We are west of Esteli. ruclips.net/user/shortsOKZ1Sc8TE4c?si=ro-qACdAWakLCsTZ
Thanks for the walking tour! Matagalpa is definitely near the top of my list of places to visit for retirement in Nicaragua. Maybe even top of the list if the lower elevation cities are too hot for me. lol. Looks really nice there in the mountains and it appears to be large enough to have all you would need. Maybe just a bit far from the Managua airport, Costa Rican border runs and, of course, the beaches. All of those are doable with the bus system I'm sure.
We just moved to Nicaragua. We are west of Esteli, near San Roque. I am surprised how cold it is here. I am not a big fan of the heat either. I am sure it is going down into the 50's at night, and the days are probably in the low 70's. There is a bus that passes by all day long going to Esteli and El Sauce.
@@TiminNicaragua Sounds like great weather! I'm sure the mountain setting must be beautiful too! 👍
Both Matagalpa and Esteli are great: perfect places to buy land for agriculture. The Nicaraguan bus system is quite reliable and extremely cheap so it's not complicated at all to get to the beach or Managua.
11:50 Yes many houses were abandoned. Because of the repressions!
09:45 It is not dangerous at all to walk there... Just go when it's low tide... Walked for hours...loved it!
Spent a whole night there. Looking at the stars and no one bothered me!
Wow... they really are expexting back tourists. In May, there was only a small palm tree hatched construction...
Hi Leo. Stood in front of that 'tienda' on the other side of the street. I wanted to get a 'fresco'. The lady wanted to charge me twice as much as the locals. So, I did not buy my chocolate drink. Be wary of some of these people. Many...use a Hershey chocolate sauce making you believe it's the real McCoy! 😮
Awesome video. Very helpful as I plan my trip. You showed some nice spots that many others don’t. That Sandinista monument is very profound. Do you recall around which street this is located??
Don't really know the name of the street... but when facing the church at the main square turn left, walk straight ahead and you'll find it.
Thanks for sharing! Looks like a beautiful place.
Indeed it is... when you go a little higher in altitude, you get to the cloud forest zone.
I respect your opinions, but maybe you should consider that much of the world is simply happy to survive. Seriously. That Nicaraguans seem preoccupied with 'less important' thing and maybe could 'do better' is a very European/US-Centric way of looking at things. If you ask Nicas, they will tell you FAMILY is the most important thing. Whether the street is swept or the buses are on time... not quite so important. Things work, and that's good enough for now. If someone was embargoing our economy, trying to overthrow OUR government, or if they had mined our harbors or our forests while supporting anti-US guerillas... then maybe we wouldn't be so concerned with thread counts in our sheets and if Popeye's has the best chicken sandwich. I am moving to Nicaragua soon, and I am fine with the pace of life, the lack of urgency and the benign neglect that seems so much a part of Central America. I am tired of the rat race and the consumerism. I am moving to a remote town where people still ride horses to get around, and I am fine with that! Please, be an observer and not a judge, especially if the people you are judging are good people. There is an old Spanish saying that reflects the way the US treats Nicaragua: "You always hate those you have hurt the most!" Just like Cuba, we punish the people because we hate their leaders.
I couldn't agree more! I'm the first person to speak out against American interventionism around the world. If Nicaragua got invaded again, I would gladly sacrifice my life to defend it. Btw, you will love living in this country, its genuine people and the normal pace of life that simply lets you enjoy. I also have a couple of videos from Cuba on my channel.
Looks more like a lake than an ocean.
That's because it's a bay 😉
Reminds me of the street markets in China and SE Asia where I lived for a while when I was younger. With the fish market you either get there within the first hour of them bringing in the catch or forget it. lol Anyway, planning a retirement scouting trip shortly to Nicaragua. My retirement budget won't be a million dollars. I lived a cheap, basically glorified backpacker, lifestyle when I was a kid in SE Asia. Let's see if I can be happy doing it as an older person. It's going to be going back to basics, to say the least. Thanks for the info and straight talk as you take us along with you! All the best! ✌
Thank you so much for commenting! You're going to love Nicaragua: it has so much variety for a relatively small country... And the best part is that it's extremely cheap. Glad that you enjoyed the video!
@@LeoJaramaz Really looking forward to getting down there! I have to say that Matagalpa looks like a place I'd really enjoy. Thanks for sharing it!
@@Brent-ox8lk Matagalpa has a cooler and more pleasant climate: it's a rural area and the agricultural hub of Nicaragua. I have a few more videos from there, especially the Selva Negra estate.

Many people say that after Little Corn Island, which is on the Caribbean side and not easily accessible by land, Las Penitas/Poneloya is the best beach in Nicaragua.
Penoloya is mostly void of businesses. Except for the few holidays!😊
Oh... Most of these 'ayudantes' will tell you that the bus will depart in five minutes. For having spent over ten years in Central America, I can assure you that you may have to wait up to two hours. P.S. Make sure you found a bathroom first...
Would like a race. From SJDS to las penitas. bet my electric kayak could beat a car on calm morning.
Most probably... although you'd be surprised how fast you can get to Leon with the new highway going around Managua.
I’m in the del sur area. Been to Leon once. No desire to return. The beach’s don’t look very good..water is rough
It's the open ocean: good for surfing...
All the chicken buses I’ve ridden were standing room only. I must be going to the wrong places
When you take this bus the other way (from Leon to Las Penitas) it's so full that you have to stand.
@@LeoJaramaz--- not surprised the bus is packed. Taxis are so cheap, I never take a bus
I swim at Marsella, not San Juan.
That's it: expats go to the surrounding beaches.
@@LeoJaramaz San Juan has many people. ,the sanitation system is not the Best. Marsella is cleaner
I just googled it, nice, many little bahias! How is the ease to find a little place closer to this bays? I am arriving early August, do you know the beaches around León? Are they clean?
@@davidwelch-w3c I am fully bilingual and traveling solo.
@enough1494 Las Penitas and Poneloya are technically a part of Leon: the beach is clean and you can even find yourself in the middle of wilderness.
When you ask for directions you might want to be a little more modest. Like say excuse me/compermiso, do you know where this street might be. That way locals will be more kind to help. Not, lady where is this street at!!! 🫤
I asked the girls first but it wasn't really clear if they even acknowledged me... so I turned to the lady. We were looking for a grocery store everywhere but couldn't find it, kept being sent back and forth and my Spanish is still not at the level where I can understand the locals 100%. Nobody spoke even a single word of English... that was extremely disappointing in a tourist and expat mecca like San Juan and especially from young people, wouldn't you agree? So what you're unfortunately seeing at the end is a culmination of a series of disappointments about basic stuff.
Thank you to the great people of Nicaragua for supporting my people despite the blackmail of the great powers and good luck to you brother. Greetings from Serbia.
Pozdrav Vama Gospodjo: nikaragvanski narod voli Srbiju!
That bird I've seen it flying free on the green areas of Managua, not long ago I saw one of them while I was on my car, it was standing on a fence near the bus stop of UNAN Managua, and in the past, like 3 years back, I saw another one in the patios of the former UCA. People gets very shy when talking to a foreigner, so they're not too talkative to you, the monkey they held is commonly called, spider monkey or mono capuchino.
Yes, the bird is a white-throated magpie jay! I realized that people get shy when talking to foreigners and besides, my Spanish is far from good... especially when understanding locals. Thank you so much for telling me what species of money that was on the beach!

Thanks for the vid and tour of the town! Not sure if you mentioned it, but what was the charge to use the gym? I guess they have a daily drop in rate?
If I remember correctly, I paid $10 for one day... they also had the option of buying a weekly pass but there was no point since we were leaving San Juan the next day.
I never been there, but this is a message to the Alcalde of San Juan del Sur, need to work more on keeping the city clean, everywhere, and the sea as well....!! Some areas are nicer, but some others look ugly, to be honest!! But overall, I like it!!
Very true! Hopefully the Alcalde gets the message.
I live 5 miles north of town ,playa Marsella, I came down in 2010, ya got to live somewhere. San Juan is better than most. I’m here about 6 months a year. Nov. to April . I bought into. Killer development. Bosques Del Mar. Close to the beach in a canopy of huge trees. Dirt cheap. Water and power a lot . Gonna build a little brick house.
