We visited Laguna de Apoyo as well as the gates of hell in Nicaragua | Masaya Volcano

Our tour included a short stop at Mirador Catarina above from Laguna de Apoyo. It's a great vantage point where you have many souvenir shops and restaurants; there is also a live band that will play Nicaraguan village folk music for you, presumably for a tip. You can also sit on the bench and just enjoy the view of the lagoon: binoculars would be great to have here.
Once you pass the gates of Masaya Volcano Park, you'll be able to drive all the way to the very crater where the smoke is rising from. The fumes can be toxic so it's not recommended to stand at observation points around the crater for longer than 15 minutes at a time... Surprisingly, the air didn't smell like sulfur and other chemicals associated with volcanic activity. There is also a trail that will take you some 500m higher, until you reach the highest vantage point: from there you can enjoy the view of the town of Masaya, its lagoon as well as Mombacho volcano in the distance. The trail to the top will take you past another crater, albeit inactive. It's also a great place to observe the sunset.
