We had the beach in Leon, Nicaragua all to ourselves | Walking in Poneloya and Las Penitas

  • This was a beach day: pretty much every day is like that in Nicaragua. We took the local bus from the barrio of Subtiaba in Leon to the beach in Poneloya. You can get some shade under the thatched roofs where municipal workers sell seafood dishes to beachgoers. This particular day happened to be quiet so I took a long stroll towards the cliff that divides Poneloya from Las Penitas. There is a little family park on the Las Penitas side: you can also walk on the main road that goes along the coast, just make sure that you're not exposed to the sun for too long. This is a surfer's paradise as you can conclude from the video. The Pacific water is pretty salty as you will find out if you decide to go for a swim: also the waves are strong so this is nothing like the Caribbean...

    Hi Leo.
Stood in front of that 'tienda' on the other side of the street.
I wanted to get a 'fresco'. The lady wanted to charge me twice as much as the locals. So, I did not buy my chocolate drink.
Be wary of some of these people. Many...use a Hershey chocolate sauce making you believe it's the real McCoy!
    😮

Wow... they really are expexting back tourists. In May, there was only a small palm tree hatched construction...

It is not dangerous at all to walk there...
Just go when it's low tide...
    Walked for hours...loved it!

Yes many houses were abandoned. Because of the repressions!

Many people say that after Little Corn Island, which is on the Caribbean side and not easily accessible by land, Las Penitas/Poneloya is the best beach in Nicaragua.

Penoloya is mostly void of businesses. Except for the few holidays!😊

Oh... Most of these 'ayudantes' will tell you that the bus will depart in five minutes. For having spent over ten years in Central America, I can assure you that you may have to wait up to two hours. P.S. Make sure you found a bathroom first...
