We went for a walking tour of Leon, Nicaragua | Bus ride from Las Penitas to Subtiaba in Leon!

After having checked in at Barca de Oro, an original hotel surrounded by fishing boats at the very end of the beach in Las Penitas, we wanted to catch the bus that would take us to the indigenous barrio of Subtiaba in the city of Leon. The last bus stop happened to be right in front of the hotel: this is where you hop on to the chicken bus that will collect passengers from Las Penitas and Poneloya and will finally drop you off at the market in Subtiaba. From there, you can walk up the Ruben Dario street and eventually end up at the main square where the Leon Cathedral is located. This square with the pigeons and the church was very reminiscent of the one in Granada. Indeed, the two cities always had a tradition of rivalry and were historically competing for the seat of Nicaragua's capital. The dispute was settled by establishing the capital in Managua, a relatively unknown smaller town up until it became the capital city.
At the main square in Leon, you will find a known coffee shop whose patrons are mostly foreigners and expats. On the other hand, we were looking for a supermarket called La Union: since there were no grocery stores in Las Penitas, other than small pulperias, we wanted to stock up on food during our stay at the beach.

I’m in the del sur area. Been to Leon once. No desire to return. The beach’s don’t look very good..water is rough

All the chicken buses I’ve ridden were standing room only. I must be going to the wrong places

When you take this bus the other way (from Leon to Las Penitas) it's so full that you have to stand.

@@LeoJaramaz--- not surprised the bus is packed. Taxis are so cheap, I never take a bus
