  • As the Nicaraguan bus service would have taken too long and we would have to change school buses in Rivas, we opted for a direct shuttle between Granada and San Juan del Sur. This sleepy fishing village that turned into a hub for North American expats is great if you want to party and explore the restaurant and clubbing scene! You have countless different bars and nightlife options here that you certainly won't find in Granada and maybe not even in Managua... However, you don't have supermarkets like La Colonia, La Union or Maxi Pali but rather smaller convenience stores where choices are more limited with generally higher prices. Initially, this was a slight annoyance for us but we quickly adjusted to it after a day or so.
Also, don't expect San Juan to have a long island style beach with white sand: this is the Pacific where the sand is dark and the beach is nestled between two cliffs. Having said that, you can still go for a dip in the ocean if you don't mind the extremely high salinity and the fishing boats. There are day shuttles available that will take you to more rustic beaches in the area, popular with surfers.

I never been there, but this is a message to the Alcalde of San Juan del Sur, need to work more on keeping the city clean, everywhere, and the sea as well....!! Some areas are nicer, but some others look ugly, to be honest!! But overall, I like it!!

I live 5 miles north of town ,playa Marsella, I came down in 2010, ya got to live somewhere. San Juan is better than most. I’m here about 6 months a year. Nov. to April . I bought into. Killer development. Bosques Del Mar. Close to the beach in a canopy of huge trees. Dirt cheap. Water and power a lot . Gonna build a little brick house. Super low density, so would like some neighbors. You’ll be glad you did. It’s a tropical wonderland. You can visit online, bosques Del Mar

How come no night videos. A little nightlife would be cool.

There will be some night scenes on the streets of San Juan as well as Leon... But we didn't really go clubbing.

Only when you're pulling a suitcase behind you ;) I've learnt my lesson: next time I'll go only with a backpack!

When you ask for directions you might want to be a little more modest. Like say excuse me/compermiso, do you know where this street might be. That way locals will be more kind to help. Not, lady where is this street at!!! 🫤

I asked the girls first but it wasn't really clear if they even acknowledged me... so I turned to the lady. We were looking for a grocery store everywhere but couldn't find it, kept being sent back and forth and my Spanish is still not at the level where I can understand the locals 100%. Nobody spoke even a single word of English... that was extremely disappointing in a tourist and expat mecca like San Juan and especially from young people, wouldn't you agree?
So what you're unfortunately seeing at the end is a culmination of a series of disappointments about basic stuff.
