NEK! 『 Exclamation 』...(from Band-Maid covers to the biggest debut of the year, a full Neki review)
Reviewing the story of NEKI's debut.
After NEKI have launched their career almost flawlessly, the debut release EXCLAMATION was our first chance to really back up all the hype. But how did it go? Did the master team of Hikaa, Natsu, Kanade, and Cocoro deliver on the amazing hype machine they had started? How did they did it? What does this mean for the future?
All this and more get discussed, so please enjoy and give your comments as always!

(*Contains flashing images*) Frequently I hear that the LIVE VERSION is the one to listen to. Especially for BAND-MAID and LOVEBITES, but also for a range of artists. But are we underselling what a studio recording offers us? Are we just giddy for more of what we love and leaving behind the original? Or are they genuinely just better? I give some thoughts on this for you to consider... ...get i...

    I have to take you to task on calling Kanami the songwriter. Miku writes pretty much all of their lyrics with Saiki now writing some, MISA writes her bass parts, Akane writes her drum parts. Kanami just writes the riffs/melodies/guitar parts.

    • @BakaBroadcast
      @BakaBroadcast Месяц назад

      I've gotta say though 😄, it's a 60 second review so sticking to key points. Kanami writes the song structures which is the frame work that the rest of the song is built around. It's like a car, sure you want good tyres, nice paint, comfy seats and a nice stereo, but it's all built around the car underneath 😜

    • @teuchterloon9130
      @teuchterloon9130 Месяц назад

      @@BakaBroadcast So then Miku is the songwriter. It's not a song without something to sing.

    • @BakaBroadcast
      @BakaBroadcast Месяц назад

      @@teuchterloon9130 You could equally invert that so I'd take that off the table. Miku is the lyric writer, but I don't know if she actually writes the melody, which is far more significant to the final song (just ask all the fans who don't understand Japanese 😄). It's not to downplay the significance of the many aspects, which I do cover, but if Kanami is responsible for the chord pattern (& riffs), tempo most likely, basic musical concept (as that would imply), and structural journey from intro to crescendo, then she is the project leader on any song. Yes, it's a team effort, but she is the primary writer. I see plenty of arguments for stating the virtues of the other members in a way that would be unecessarily convoluted for a brief intro video like this, but nothing that invalidates the central premise that the above factors make Kanami the primary songwriter. ✨

    • @teuchterloon9130
      @teuchterloon9130 Месяц назад

      @@BakaBroadcast Let me put it a different way (because I'm arguing the toss due to feeling you downplay Miku's importance). Miku is the voice of the band. She takes the lead in interviews, does the majority of MC word and it's HER words that Saiki sings. Miku is also the heart and soul of the band. Without her, there is no BAND-MAID. But I digress. You can't have a song without words, so Miku is the song writer.

    • @BakaBroadcast
      @BakaBroadcast Месяц назад

      Interesting point, and I agree her voice is not so loud live. That being said, I don't think it's that she's doing a "Kawaii" style and neither do I really think she'd be better off being more of a power singer. She has quite a soulful and rhythmic style that doesn't necessarily lend itself to big projection, so I actually feel she would be better served by the live engineer just turning the mic up for her. It can be difficult on small live stages, so maybe as they get in to bigger venues, or simply get more individual artist dedicated soundstaff at their shows. My view at least :)

    Prime Band Maid would have signed Reigen Girl, I think it's the song most directly relatable to albums like JBI or earlier. The EP is an excellent calling card and I find the band very interesting, so I think it's a mistake to constantly compare them to Band Maid, it would be unfair not to let them follow their own path. I find it very interesting to wait to see them compose their own music, that's what can make them go far, Yuki Tanabe in the composition and Kumoi Haruka in the lyrics... with the band's arrangement. It seems also very first Band Maid. Anyway, I'm the first one who keeps comparing them. Thanks Howard, that was an excellent analysis. This has been one of several albums I've imported from Japan this year.

    • @BakaBroadcast
      @BakaBroadcast Месяц назад

      Thanks so much, always love your comments! As you mentioned, the Band-Maid comparison is one that hopefully will be forgotten with time, but it certainly is an understandable symptom of winning over so many Band-Maid fans for sure! Their fanbase has a lot of Band-Maid followers in it, so the comparisons will be there at least initially. I feel that the comparison mostly falls apart in that NEK! have the pop-rock melody focus of early Band-Maid (pre them writing their own songs a la MIJ) with the attention to musicianship and nuance of later Band-Maid, but also a songwriting style that deviates hugely. I still think Cocoro's rythms and Hika's vocals are very un-Band-Maid, but are also rather key driving forces in what makes the band's sound work so well. I am really intrigued to see what the next songs sound like but yes, the more Reigen Girl/Endless Game, or something totally unexpected... the better :)

      Interesting point, very poetically worded too :) ! I'm a great believer that an form of experimentation is also great, if a band has the ability to do it. I don't like bands being forced to play one style through fear of upsetting their fans. Therefore, Band-Maid have always been very interesting with their occasionally deviations like Memorable, or Page, or Rin`ne to a degree. There's nothing wrong with having a core sound you enjoy, and revisiting it regularly, but those experimentations are what makes being creative actually fun! I am always excited for more of that :)

    Be interesting to find out who is writing the songs. They're signed up to PCI Music, a subsidiary of Pony Canyon. Pony Canyon have a stated aim of getting their artists more international exposure, so maybe this band was put together with that in mind. (We've not been given any back story, origin myth for NEK!. Maybe it hasn't been worked out yet.) In terms of marketing - I suspect someone looked at which Japanese all-female bands get the most support outside Japan - having a name westerners can read (even if they mispronounce it) helps, having some lyrics in English helps,(but Japanese lyrics also for the domestic audience.) Have a poppy sound but with some rock and other elements. (I call it technical pop-rock but others may disagree.) So appealing to fans of Band-Maid etc (as you mentioned.) A good start but where do they go from here ? How much input does the band have in their sound / musical direction ? Time will tell.

    • @BakaBroadcast
      @BakaBroadcast Месяц назад

      Very interesting point. I think that the band was picked up/put together because the core elements were just right. The overall sound of the band probably was quite organic therefore as this kind of thing would be hard to fake otherwise. However yes, clearly it's an opportunity to appeal to the Japanese girls' rock scene with a band who have both the colourful charm that makes these bands appealing, the song structures that pull in Japanese fans, and the musical nuance that gets western fans. So where do they go from here? Well, it's a good question, and I do await the sequel to this album, but I think that ultimately I'd be ok for more of the same, at least for a second album. Variation will become a question over time, but for a band who only have 5 published songs, I'm happy for them to continue to solidify their core sound which is absolutely unique at the moment. Yes, we have all heard contemporary rock bands x1,000,000 , but I like that they have a nimble and soulful singer rather than the current trend for power singers. I love that Cocoro delivers rhythms that are complex on paper but sound simple in execution, and their entire vibe of effortless detail and melody focus. Plus, so glad they are not just another band veering heavy to win western fans. So long as they don't lose those core uniquenesses, pretty much everything else is a place they can go. Play with alternate sounds, genres, anything really. Once they are happy they know what their core comfy sound is, everything else is potential waiting to be discovered 😃

    When "Get Over" came out I wasn't really on board. Definitely a band to watch for, but I thought it would probably take a while. I found the song to be more a construction of parts and I found the main melody to be very basic. I'm happy to say that future songs I think are improved. Slight tangent now, but I promise I'm bringing this back around to Nek! at the end. Band-Maid has taken a long time since their last release and I haven't been overly blown-away by what they've put out in the meantime. Band-Maid like to push themselves, but based on what we've heard so far (and we've heard *a lot* of the album) I think maybe they struggled with where to go after "Unseen World" and "Unleash". How do you get more "Band-Maid-y" than "Corallium"? They went crazy with "Balance", but it didn't get an overwhelming response from fans. Where do you go? They could go more proggy but I think they probably don't want to, and that's without considering fan reaction. They've also said they're not a metal band, so I think heavier is out of the question. My point is that with another band getting a bunch of hype from a lot of people in their community, maybe they now have someone to push them. Maybe they now have a target, something to work against. I think Band-Maid have been entirely without competition in the "complex, energetic, fun but interesting rock music" space, and I've spent a lot of time looking. I don't think Nek! is near their level, yet, but the fact that there is anyone at all in there might be enough to give Band-Maid a target. If you're going to jump, you have to have something to push against and hopefully Nek! can provide it. Based on what I've heard so far, I think at this point in time, Band-Maid needs it. Track by track: Maze: A highlight. It's made me think about how Band-Maid could use some more vocal variety. I think there's as much in this one song as there is in Band-Maid's past 7 years haha. Reigen Girl: This song is so 90s it hurts. The chorus melody, the guitar screeches, the way it ends. It's a good version of it, but we've heard this before. ENDLESSGAME: Another highlight, though I wish the orchestra wasn't so prominent and that cool guitar riff was more forward. I love the descending part in the chorus. Blink: Kind of a standard ballad, but better than most bands would have done it. I like how the bass builds the song and it's got a great solo. Get Over: As I said it doesn't really come together for me, and I'm not a fan of the verse melody at all; but it did the job of showcasing what the band was about. Anyway, a promising debut and I'm happy there's someone else in Band-Maid's space to give them even the slightest competition. I'm looking forward to what's nek!xt from them. Sorry.

I do agree that Kanade's bass is stand out in Maze, and this is part of why it's such a great energizer at the front of the album, however I do feel she is equally good, or better on other songs on the album. Just in a more subtle way. To me, that subtle level of detail that rewards you without you even knowing, that is what powers 60-80% of this album's brilliance, and to me is the true "NEK!" stand-out factor😊!

      Same opinion. With Get Over, they reminded me of early Band-Maid, in that I thought they would benefit from an additional Saiki-type 5th member. @@wave8359 Thank you! That's actually a fair question. I recently switched from only using stills to using video. To save the boring bit 😆, I have a bit of experience with copyright, from the company's side. I think we live in an easier time now than 5 years ago, but I still wouldn't include the audio yet in most cases. Partly because I like to compare songs quickly which makes it hard to pick what should be playing at any given time, and partly because I think the copyright case still stands pretty strong. Hooooooooopefully, my words will get them more listens though, and that is the real goal 😄! Thanks again!
