Tom McComas Tribute, August 2024
Tom McComas of TM books and Video passed away in August of 2024.
Tom inspired thousands of model railroaders and collectors with his books and videos.
He had a great sense of humor and was a friend to most anyone that met him.
This is my tribute to Tom highlighting what many have never seen; a behind-the-scenes video of his work in progress shooting a high rail model railroad layout.

TJ's Trains. Menards mysterious lighted hopper unit train featuring the Lionel Phantom.
Просмотров 1 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I ordered the dealer 4 pack of Menards lighted hopper cars as soon as they were announced. I knew they had to be powered by a special locomotive and what better horse than the original Lionel Phantom? Realistic? Naw. Fun? I hope so! The sounds are all genuine Phantom captured in real time. Thanks for watching! TJ
Heavy lifting Sikorsky helicopter lifts at Costco under construction.

A helicopter lifts heavy equipment onto the roof of a new Costco building. The pilot nonchalantly has his window open with his arm hanging out like he's cruising in his '57 Chevy on Saturday night. The chopper is a Sikorsky model S-58T owned by Midwest Truxton International, Inc. from Chicago. Scroll ahead to about 2 minutes for some closeups.
Lionel postwar trains on a modern layout, part two. 4K video shot December 2022

Today we see 6 Lionel postwar sets in about 6 minutes. We start with the 1957 set #2296W led by the 2373 Canadian Pacific AA F3 diesels. This is the only year the CP F3s were offered making them hard to find. My set additionally includes the 2 separate sale 2553 and 2554 passenger cars. I know, the CP diesels look a little strange with the palm trees in the opening scene! Following is the 1958 ...
TJ's Erector steam machine shop

I built a simulated steam powered machine shop from Erector parts. It is based on real machine shops from the early 1900s and is of my own design. The machines include a band saw, stamping press, table saw, drill press, and hack saw. Whoever left that giant screw on the floor near the drill press (best seen at 1:24) lost their restroom privileges for the week.

Postwar Lionel Excursion on a Modern Layout
Просмотров 42 тыс.4 года назад
We decided to shut down the modern trains and give my postwar Lionel trains a chance to visit and stretch their legs on a modern layout. We see ten trains in nine minutes culminating with a 1950 Lionel 773 Hudson steam locomotive pulling a unit train of eleven 6464 series box cars.

Here is the second video installment of the Lionel postwar sets I have collected. There are 4 sets, or "outfits" as Lionel referred to them, offered from 1951 through 1956 and a few accessories. Here is a link to part one.....ruclips.net/video/JbjANYXPBFw/видео.html Enjoy!
TJ's Steampunk projector, TJ quattuor.
Просмотров 2565 лет назад
This is the 4th Steampunk project I have created, "TJ quattuor" I started with a neat 1962 8mm K-91 Keystone projector that had a film gate problem so it was not usable as a film projector. I removed the bulb and added a small flicker bulb in its place. Since old projectors like these have so many cool operating mechanical parts and so much character, I didn’t feel the need to add much. Of cour...

Join us for a day when two of UP's famed "Heritage" locomotives make their runs. The Western Pacific Railroad was acquired by the Union Pacific in 1983. TJ's Trains 2017.....Lionel Postwar Layout
Просмотров 78 тыс.7 лет назад
After several years of building and operating my high rail layout, I got the urge to take a step back in time and build a Lionel postwar layout reminiscent of the display layouts of the '50s. This layout has no scenery, exposed wiring, a bright green grass mat and over scale accessories. In other words, it has all of the charm of postwar Lionel. It features the Lionel postwar sets I have acquir...

TJ's Trains OGR video shoot; Behind-the-scenes
Wonderful video, Terry! I’ve seen every one of TM’s videos since I was a kid, and they are the best videos ever made on model railroading. I watch them multiple times every day. I hope Tom is resting well knowing that his work made an impact on my generation.
Thank you for your comment, and I agree. Tom probably touched many more lives then he could imagine. TJ
Made a video of Spike’s Railhead Terry.
Thanks for the heads up. I watched your cool video. I had never heard of that place before but it looks like my kinda store! TJ
Got any brass engines Terry?
Nope!
Is it true Terry your favorite train is still the next one you’re going to buy?
LOl, you have a great memory Hunter, and yes, it's still correct!
When was the last time you were at York Terry?
Got any K Line Terry?
Hi Hunter, I have one K Line passenger car that was gifted to me. I have nothing against them, I just didn't buy any. Stay well!
I remember seeing your original layout on a copy of The Magic of Lionel when I was a kid. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen back then.
LOL, you've got a great memory! Thanks for watching and your nice comment. TJ
Love your old school layout with the tubular track
Thank you Ralph!
What did you use to get the Tornado effect. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this on my FEC layout
That is a trade secret that took me a year or so to figure out. For a donation of only $100.00....just kidding! I used and modified an American DJ "H2O" special effects projector. It had 2 rippled glass wheels that turned in opposite directions and a rotating multi color filter. Their idea is to project a fun effect on a wall. I tore out one of the rotating rippled glass wheels and disabled the motor on the color filter. I machined a small metal plate (in live theater lighting it is known as a gobo filter for Go-Between) with an opening shaped in the tornado shape. The gobo is placed after the rotating rippled glass wheel and the light shines through the moving glass and is shaped by the gobo. I kept the colored filter, now stationary and can adjust it so the light shines between the yellow and green films to give it an eerie look. On a side note, I used old film strip projector lenses coupled to strobe lights to simulate the lightning. I bought commercial gobos with different lightning shapes and mounted them between the lens and the strobe light to project the lightning on the walls. Back to the twister...Once you know how it is built, you can more easily see the action and realize the image is rotating in a vertical circle instead of the perceived horizontal tornado rotation. I also mounted the entire projector on a machined motorized mount that has a very large gear reduction. This pans the tornado very slowly across the wall. It takes about 2 minutes to travel about 5 feet across the wall. My legacy X10 computer program controls all the room effects and starts the projector light and rotating glass as well as the gear motor to move the tornado. It is synched to the soundtrack and there are air raid sirens and a loud rumble from a subwoofer near the projection during the tornado activity. Easy, right? I'm very happy with the results and there are probably endless other ways of making this happen but this is what works for me. Thanks for asking and good luck with your project! TJ
@@isellu thank you
Ever got to meet Don Varda Terry?
Yes, he was at one of my early TM video shoots.
Ever get to meet Tom’s son Jeff Terry?
Hi Hunter, no I did not, did you?
@@isellu yes I did when I was younger.
Awesome tribute to Tom
Thank you!
Great tribute. I always loved the hat changes.
LOL, thanks Paul. If I want to attend a train show incognito, I leave my cap off!
I loved wacthing the love toy train series growing up the crashes and everything always put a smile on my face
This is amazing! It’s nice to see a tribute from someone who’s actually been in his work and to hear, from the inside, what he was like in person. This is a really great tribute and really cool to show the behind the scenes as well!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for catching the man himself at work. I'm just another one of the many who fell in love with the hobby because of his videos, but it's fun to see his process and personality.
Thanks for watching! TJ
Very nice tribute to a legend! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! TJ
This is a great video, i have a set of the clear lionel F 3s that would look cool pulling these.
I agree, that would be the ultimate power for these cars. The Phantom locomotive that I used is a real dog for pulling power. I had to add weight in every available crevice to get this filmed! Thanks for commenting. TJ
Great tribute,👍
Thank you!
Thankyou for sharing love your layout im gone miss him he got me started watching his video about layouts and more im big fan of your layout and his videos
Thank you!
Thank you for this video Terry, RIP Tom McComas
Thanks for commenting!
@@isellu No problem Terry! Always enjoy your videos, but this was a bittersweet one.
I really enjoyed watching this, so great to see all this
Thank you! TJ
Thanks for the video giving tribute to Tom he will be greatly missed he did bring especially the O gauge train collecting hobby out to the public with his awesome videos he has inspired me to pursue further in my love of toy trains a purchased a many of trains because of his videos btw Terry you have a awesome layout I've enjoyed seeing the progression when Tom videoed many years ago both times thank you again for sharing the behind the scenes take care and God bless
Thank you for the nice comment. I hope Tom realized how many lives he touched.
Very nice! I met Tom at a show, many years ago. He was a perfect gentleman. He knew his Lionel and his books helped me expand my knowledge of Lionel. He will be missed. As a side note, I love the slot cars. I have around 30 sets, mostly 1/32 and HO. I still have my Aurora and Revell Nassau sets from when I was a kid. Great memories.
Thanks John and I hope you are able to run your slots once in a while. Nice! TJ
I didn't own any Lionel trains as a kid, but I owned all of the TM Books videos as a kid. I remember first hearing & seeing Mr. McComas in the Lionel Christmas VHS. He brought the magic of model trains to kids who could not afford them. He and Thomas the Tank Engine inspired my love of trains I carry with me today. Thank you Tom. We'll all miss you. ❤
Hopefully York will honor him at their next big meet. Tom helped plant the seeds of model railroading for 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s kids.
I remember seeing your layout on vhs when I was 5 in the 90’s.
R.I.P Tom, Gods speed.😭
Terry, Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Tom. I wouldn't be in the hobby if it wasn't for Tom's The Magic of Lionel VHS. My parents bought it for me in the spring of 1994, and I watched it constantly. At 37, I still have it and also have a nice collection of postwar Lionel because of it. Thank you again.
I'm glad it still is an enjoyment for you. I have a postwar style layout also and enjoy that as much or more than the modern stuff once in a while. Thanks for watching! TJ
Thanks for sharing .

Thanks for watching and I'm luvindatusername! TJ
This is a wonderful tribute to tom. I've been a train buff for my entire life starting with thomas the tank engine & friends. than my first exposure to tm was the vhs version of i love toy trains part 1 (the one i had was the 1997 version with the opening and closing theme songs by james coffey). and i was hooked to tm ever since. it was also where my intrest in model trains grew. I've nearly almost bought every video tm has produced (more titles I'd like to buy but my shelf doesn't have enough room). he was a wonderful man that inspired many people in the model train hobby. it's kind of sad tom died nearly one year after greg scholl of his own video company died. they both impacted on everyone of the hobby and it won't be the same without them. wonderful tribute video to a fantastic man.
Thanks for watching! TJ
Very sad to hear of Tom's passing. Never met him, but I would've been very happy to as TM's videos had a pretty big influence on me as a kiddo. Got the 3 rail bug so well I'll never be cured.... Prayers for his family, friends, and all us train nuts everywhere. Mr. McComas will be missed by all.
What a fun tribute to Tom McComas, one of the "great ones". I still have the VHS tape that has your original interview on it, and you could tell from your face that there was funny stuff going on. Thanks for the "back story". By the way, I share your passion for Tonka trucks, but don't have the collection you do. Well done!
LOL, thanks J.J. Funny stuff indeed. In the original 1991 interview Tom was kneeling in front of the shelves where my caps were displayed. He innocently started by tossing a cap to me and told me to put it on. Soon he was flying them at me like a Frisbee. Of course there is probably an hour or more of interview shot just to get 10 minutes of useful content. It was around 2 AM and he finished by throwing caps at me quicker than I could change them. That is what he was trying to capture at the 2014 session except that one made the edit and became the end of the video. I'm glad you are into Tonka trucks as well. In case you haven't seen it, I have a video of those when I had them set up on the same table where my slot cars were at in the tribute video. I had taken the slots down and made a giant scenicked excavation site to do the video. Here is the link to TonkLand......ruclips.net/video/pkzowxq7RrE/видео.html
What a very sweet and emotional tribute video you made there Terry. Tom McComas’ I Love Toy Trains series and his other toy train videos (including both the old Toy Train Revue and new Toy Train Revue series) got me interested into not only trains in general, but into the spectacular model railroading hobby. Tom was a very wonderful and passionate guy in The O Gauge Model Railroading Territory, hell, I would say like he was the king of it, but anyways, it was a great pleasure for you to share us some behind the scenes footage of their second visit back in 2014 and a couple of photos of their first visit back in 1991. And Tom McComas, thank you for everything that you made for us in the model railroading hobby and us train fans both young and old alike. Your legacy for video producing on both toy trains and real trains will never be forgotten 🫡😔🪽
Thanks for watching and your message to Tom is well said!
Thanks for this. I spent many hours reading his books and watching his videos, when I wasn't busy with my trains.
Yeah, the only thing better than reading about or watching videos about trains is playing with trains. Thanks! TJ
Brilliant.. 🙏😌
Thank you as always, Porsche.
This is so sad May Tom RIP I watch every one of his videos. I can remember the first one I watched I was hooked I order as much as I can afford. Well they make a special video I would want one so sorry
Thanks for the great video tribute Terry! I purchased my first TM Video on vhs in 1994 at a local hobby store, and now probably own everyone of his train DVDs and most of his older Lionel books! Love watching and reading them over and over again. I will miss him greatly! Paul from Michigan
We probably had no idea how those old standard def VHS tapes would steer us far into the model railroad future. Thanks for watching neighbor!
Great Tribute to Tom. Terry, I've been subscribed to you for a long time, but only just realized you were the second layout on 'The Magic of Lionel'. I must have watched your feature 100 times as a kid. Thanks for being such a great inspiration and again, great tribute to Tom McComas.
Wow JD, a comment from a real live RUclips influencer!!!! Seriously, I have always enjoyed your videos and admittedly just now subscribed. Thanks for your comments and keep up the good work! TJ
Great tribute to Tom McComas Terry.
Thank you, as always Hunter!
I regret not getting to meet him, he too helped get me into the hobby even though I started with HO, but I did in recent years start collection Lionel as I joined a club that was actually featured in one of his videos, Lionel Nation 8. He is someone the model train community should never forget. PS, do you still collect Marx trains? I have the original Toy Train Revue 3 on DVD and remember the segment on your layout mentioning that you did back then 😋
Wish I could’ve met him too.
Thanks for watching and commenting. The only Marx trains I have are those that I inherited from my uncle. Unfortunatley the driven gear on the driver wheels is about the same diameter as the wheel itself and they hang up on my Ross Custom turnouts. I proudly display them though and they mean a lot to me.
That was a beautiful tribute Terry. I started watching TM through the I Love Toy Trains series and it would eventually grow from there with the various other videos that they produced Great Toy Train Layouts of America, Toy Train Revue, A Century of Lionel, Celebrity Train Layouts, I Love Cat Machines and various others. Without Tom and the vast catalog of videos made by him and his crew, I wouldn’t be into trains the same way that I did now. Watching these behind the scenes moments was honestly a real treat to watch and it just shows how much Tom enjoys doing these videos. While he was one of the reasons why I got into the toy train hobby, he was also a major influence on me with videomaking/filmmaking. Tom will be missed greatly by everyone within the toy train hobby and I send my deepest condolences to his family. Rest in Peace Tom and Thanks again
Hello Isaiah. Thank you for your nice comments. It sounds like you are a TM super fan. Hey, I just subscribed to your channel and will be watching more of your cool vids!
This is a great tribute to Tom and his shenanigans with filming. I was at the store last month to pick up some train Charyl had on hold for me and he sadly wasn't there that day. He will be missed dearly.
Wow, that's too bad you didn't get a chance to see him. BTW, I like your choice of the shenanigans word.....that's exactly what Tom was about.
@@isellu But at least I have photos of him and I when I was there last year and in 2019. I need to add some clear coat to my I Love Toy Trains boxcar to protect his signature on it.
I Love Toy Trains changed my life for the better. Thank you Tom McComas from the bottom of my heart. Wonderful tribute for a wonderful soul. May he Rest In Peace.
Thank you!
Great tribute video, Terry. The original Toy Train Revue was one of my first avenues to finding TM's content, and are still some of TM's greatest works. It was wonderful to see some behind the scenes snippets. It was like finding these stories for the first time all over again. Thanks for sharing them. Tom was not just an incredible video producer and trailblazer for the hobby as a whole, but what a compassionate man. Every video I got from TM had a unique blend of passion and joy. There will never be another guy like Tom.
Thank you! Tom deservedly has a great following.
I have that Terry, I watched it so many times,I know the dialog. I did a couple tribute videos on my channel, this behind the scenes, is precious.
Thank you, 1991 seems like yesterday!
I had the pleasure of meeting Tom at a York show back in 2007. I made a point to thank him and tell him how much his work amused and entertained me over the years. My favorite is the 100 year history of Lionel with Tom Snyder.
I'm glad you got a chance to meet him and I'm sure he appreciated your encouragement.
What a beautiful tribute to Tom McComas Terry. It was Tom's I Love Toy Trains series that got me into this wonderful hobby, which some of the footage was from your previous layout. I soon started watching all of his other train shows and loved each one of them, which continues to fuel my interest in toy trains. I was fortunate to meet Tom at his studio/store in Michigan City back in December, 2022. He was such a a delight to talk to and I purchased my first Lionel trolley and gang car from him. This past April, I acquired his Commodore Vanderbilt with open spoked drivers that he used in his I Love Toy Trains part 11 video. I was deeply saddened about his passing, but I hope to continue his legacy by producing films on toy trains under my brand. I will eventually do a series of videos as a tribute to him, which will include an overview history on his Commodore Vanderbilt. My deepest condolences to the McComas family and best wishes to you Terry.
Thank you Nikolas, I appreciate it! It must be special to own one of his locomotives. I will look forward to your videos.
@@isellu you are sincerely welcome Terry. Maybe some day we can get together and chat about trains. I also live in Michigan. Best wishes. - Nik
I had the great pleasure to meet him at a York meet several years ago. A great guy. He will be missed.
Yes, he's the kind of guy you could visit with for a short time and feel like you've come away with a new friend.
