TJ's Trains....The Accessories

- Welcome to the fourth installment of my layout videos. This time we concentrate on my vintage Lionel operating accessories. Most of these were produced in the mid-fifties, making them over fifty years old! They load and unload lumber, culverts, ice, coal, milk cans, cattle and oil drums.
The last scenes feature two projects that I built from scratch. The school playground is powered from below by three small gear motors. Note that the two swings run independent of each other.
The lift bridge is constructed using Erector girders, pulleys and motors. The moveable span is an Atlas single track Pratt Truss bridge. Two Erector motors connected together on top of each tower drive a shaft that rotates six pulleys. Cables that run over the pulleys are connected to the bridge span on one end and a counterweight on the other. Power for the track on the bridge and LED lighting is supplied by two twisted pair wires that raise and lower with the bridge. The weighted wires descend into the the bridge abutment. Each pair of motors is controlled by a variable power supply to help keep them in synchronization so the bridge is kept level. The bridge spans 40 inches wide and rises to a 74 inch clearance. It connects my main layout with a three track siding that is 18 feet long.
More to come..... Развлечения
If you had it all now and had it all working now you would still be the king of model railroading. I liked the sound effects too.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice and brings back many childhood memories!
Excellent, my mission is accomplished. Thanks Charles!
If you had all of this as a kid in the 50's you were the king of model railroading.
Awesome…
Wow a culvert loader that actually works the right way
Yes, they can be temperamental, but I've been lucky I guess. Thanks for watching!
This is the way it was when a boy would love trains and dream of having working accessories like this on his layout. Unfortunately today kids prefer video games and x boxes for entertainment. I would say that CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION on building and running a railroad was and always will be a thrill. Thank you for sharing your video of the great demonstration of Lionel working accessories. Thank you from all the people who enjoy Trains and running them for fun and imagination.
+Ray Szymarek Well put Ray.
Thanks for the comment!
TJ
Ray Szymarek I'm 18 and I'm starting collecting Lionel operating accessorys so far I have a 151 Lionel semaphore and a coal loader.
and I'm hoping to get the hopper coal loader and the coal ramp.
some of girls loved train to. have so many running through the houseand also outside. more of are getting into. is a fantastic hobby were ones imagination can go anywhere building so many things.
Love the sound effects - especially when the "hot rod forklift" engine fires up @ 5:56 ! What a gas !
I see that the lumber man has a mass on!
Pretty cool.
Ted.
Wow the iceing part looks cooler since I was a kid did not know name it is but nailed it!

Fantastic. A very professional and entertaining video. Thanks.
Awesome layouts are just totally awesome you are an artist
Thank you sir!
All I can say is WOW. Thanks for posting
You are a MASTER at adding sound effects !! SO much fun to watch !
Thank you, I appreciate your comment!
I remember seeing this layout unfinished in "the magic of lionel" video I believe, and I've gotta say, great job on practically making your own turntable!
I've only seen a few of them in action. Never like this before. Great collection and video
Would love to see a separate video showing your custom-built "trainshelf loader" in complete operation.
When my father had his humongous Lionel layout in the basement of the house in New York, he bought the Bosco milk car accessory because he knew I loved Bosco for making chocolate milk. I would have something like that on my hi-rail layout for nostalgic sake. If I remember right the milk cans were chocolate brown. The accessories nowadays the old ones if they work command sky-high collector prices and the chinese-made reissues even if they work quieter and better than the originals are still ridiculously expensive. Too much for my blood.
Superb camera work .Very professional . Thank you .
Thank you, I love both trains and videography!
TJ
Here too , avid photographer and train buff , real ones and model railroading.
Lived 1 block from Frank Pettit , what stories he had !
Wow, I bet you could listen to him for hours.
Terry, I've watched your vids for a long time. The progression seems neverending and absolutely the most fun to watch and behold. Long may you and your RR run!
Thank you, that's very nice!
Great job on the sound effects, not to leave out your excellent work on the lift bridge.
Thanks Daniel, I appreciate it!

Thank you Mike, I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Thanks
very cool....!!!!
Nice video! Your layout is spectacular! I love the way you can take trains from your shelves over the bridge and onto the layout. Could you make a layout overview? Thanks again!
Thank you! A wonderful layout. I appreciate all of your operating accessories.Mmmmmmmm
P.S. I think that most of the accessories are Lionel, and some American Flyer. I do recognize the Bridge being built from an AC Gilbert Erector Set(s).
HI Jay,
You are correct on all counts!
Thanks for watching,
TJ
YEA FRIEND IT SURE IS SOME COOL STUFF.....I SURE DO LIKE IT
Tom McComas from TM books and video had covered an earlier layout of mine in the I Love Toy Trains series but not this one.
I have been lucky enough to have this layout featured in both CTT and OGR magazines as well as the OGR Blu-ray video Great Layout Adventures volume 7.
Thanks for watching!
These stuff in your layout are vintage l
absolutely great layout and video. I do wish you had the AEC nuclear reactor. I have never seen one operate and , your layout is a natural place for it. Maybe near Area 51. Love that homage to 007 and dr. No
I wish they still made accessories like this, for Lionel and American Flyer made great ones.
Lionel occasionally puts out a revamped version of their classic operating cars and accessories, but the range is small and pricey, not as good as the old ones were either...
Shipwright1918 you are better to try to purchase some of the used original accessories (which I have done) rather than the revamped ones which I have heard don't last and break down. They are usually made of plastic rather than metal. You can still pick up many of the old one ps in relatively good condition. Lionel's Vision Line of engines and freight cars look excellent but are extremely expensive.
@railroading29
Thank you! The lift bridge moveable span is by Atlas and everything else is original A.C. Gilbert Erector set parts. You can expand the text by clicking the down arrows in the area below the video and read the details.
I kept the original sounds, mainly buzzing from the postwar accessories, and added sound effects to make the video more interesting.
I can provide them to Lionel for a small royalty!
Thanks for watching.
TJ
Thank you all for your nice comments, I appreciate it!
TJ
Most or all of the accessory sound effects are added? Sound really makes a difference ! Accessory Sound, perhaps the design team at LIONEL should look into this! Great video. Thank you.
@lizrdlovrs
That is the American Flyer, by Lionel, #4-2321 Sawmill from the '80s. The sister accessory is the #4-2300 Oil Drum loader that sits next to it. Even though they are technically S scale, they work well with O scale trains.
There have been several versions of that accessory and it shouldn't be too hard to find one. Good luck!
I have collected a number of these accessories. I am currently planing a layout which I hope to build next year.
Cool, have fun!
3:56 weird thing you should know that black thing help machine carry better without this area causing maintains. It could even help crane carry too
WOW THATS SOME NICE LIONEL STUFF YOU HAVE...IS THE LIFT BRIDGE AN ERECTOR SET OR IS IT A LIONEL BRIDGE?????
COOL Alright!,0:18
HOLLY GUACAMOLE!!!!!! did you billed that bridge at the end your self? it looks so real!
Great accessories Terry. You a Boxcar Willie fan?
LOL, no Hunter, not really but it's one of a few railroad songs that RUclips allowed me to post in this video.
I like this song but don't really follow BW!
Didn't I seen the layout on I love toy trains?
arent they still made?
The accessories added good play value for a child. But as an adult hi railer they are noisy and leave much to be desired for scenery purposes. I just like to fire up the train and let them run. Did not do the switching in HO scale sure don't do it in Tri-Rail because switches are expensive just like in the old days. Kids would ask each other how many switches you had. For changing routes Maybe but let's face it we are not going to be setting out cars and picking up cars at Industries. I did not want to emulate the real thing to that extent. Too much like work. I just want to have fun with my trains.
Yeah, there are several ways to enjoy the hobby but I like to run them as well instead of realistic operation. Thanks for watching!
@@isellu what's with the BMW emblem? I myself have a small collection of BMW Airhead motorcycles from the 1970s. Great bikes. I have 500,000 miles on my 1977 100/ 7 I told lady pulled out in front of me and my bike went through her passenger door. I hated losing one of my classic motorcycles and almost getting killed due to someone stupidity. So are you at the BMW Motorcycles or are you into cars?
@@frankmarkovcijr5459 It sounds like you have a great collection and I'm glad you're still alive to enjoy it. BMW makes great bikes and cars and has a very loyal following. We are currently without any BMWs but we have had several AWD 3 series, X3s and X5s over the years from 1994 until 2013. The twin turbo 3 series was a little rocket.
@@isellu oh so you have cars BMW cars then. Cool BMW makes great stuff.
