Battletech's Supernova, Nova Cat's King Crab Hard Swap!
#Battletech #BattletechLore #Mechwarrior #mechwarrior5clans
The Clans ran out of AC/20 shells because the Ultra 20 and LB-20 had been around for 20 years and nobody was building the old stuff anymore. Those King Crabs were not going to be used as much, but they still wanted something "that could take out a 'mech in a single salvo". New technologies were available, heat sinks were now smaller and energy weapons were more effective than ever.
Here came the Supernova. You paid for the entire heat bar, let's USE the entire heat bar. 6 ER Large Lasers will carve things up really quickly, but then you have all those MWO variants and those official variants as well... Which is the best?

The Grizzly is not flashy. It is capable enough to fit reasonably well into several roles. My Blooding was a triumph due to this machine. Missile fire had torn holes into the gauss rifle, rending it useless. I had two salvos of missiles and the pulse laser arrays, so I closed with the other cadet in a Mad Dog and kicked the legs. The machine fell, face down and struggled to stand with no hands. So I continued to attack, wrenching away handfuls of plating & myomer fiber from its back until I could crush the sensitive gyro nestled within. A formal reprimand was issued for violating the code of honorable combat, although my position as a warrior remained. The commandant administered twenty lashes for my dishonorable actions and I celebrated each fall of the whip across my back. Each strike sent pain streaking through my nerves, but each blow tore open a warrior's flesh & spilled the blood of the warrior into the hungry ground. My knees buckled beneath me and I barely remember falling to the ground as I was untied. Rough hands picked me up and I tried in vain to focus on the rocks and blades of grass moving beneath me as I was carried to the med bay and unceremoniously dumped on the floor. My jaw clenched against the pain, but the corners of my lips curved upward in the slightest smile as darkness took me. I was a warrior. I would serve and die for the Bear, for Jorgensson, for Tseng, & for Kerensky's vision. Forgive the prose, Professor. The totem mech serves its purpose, stirring our love of Clan, family, & victory.

Greetings Professor HeyTeeEn. Jason here from the Hellsport Mek Werks. We recently got our hands on a Goshawk-Vapor Eagle. The Goshawk II, made in 3086 by the Clans. The Mech was pretty well disarmed by the Legion and sported only its ER Large Laser as the sole remaining weapon upon the Mech's chassis. Since the Mech was built with Clan Endo-Steel, we added Clan Ferro-Fiberous armor. A total of 8 tons of it. The ECM, and all the smaller weapons were missing. And we added a 2nd ER Large Laser. During that phase of construction, we added a hand to the arm without out one, and made the resulting Mech symmetrical. Two Clan DSHS were added to the design to deal with the added heat burden. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the Left Torso mounted Targeting Computer survived combat, and needed very little in the way of repair to get it functional again. Mostly it involved replacing melted fiber-optic control cables linking the computer to its weapons arrays and sensors. The seven jump jets were all intact, so little needed to be done with them other than to ensure that they were functional and linked to the cockpit controls. And that brings up the Cockpit itself. Which, had to be totally replaced, after the Gauss round that had passed through it. Most of the control panels, view-screens, and displays were intact. But the main view-screen and pilot's chair were total write-offs and had to be replaced. Damaged systems were repaired with Clan materials from other projects and did not seriously delay the reconstruction, since the entire head assembly was worked upon before being mounted to the chassis at a later phase of the build. The Mech's Clan XL Engine was intact, although it did require minor repairs due to having been running when the cockpit was destroyed, forcing an emergency shutdown of the fusion core. No matter how advanced, a SCRAM of any fusion engine will do some damage to the system. The resulting Mech was claimed by the Legion that had captured it, and designated as the Goshawk II GL-A. Tests performed at the proving grounds on Drax, Stygia III, proved that the Mech performed admirably with only the two ER Large Lasers. The seven jump jets worked without any further effort upon our part. The targeting computer functioned well, and the fusion engine stayed firmly within the green zone during testing. Practically the only 'issue' with the entire design was that movement generated a heat burden to the Mech's systems. The 'standard' 1 or 2 'points' worth during walk-run movements, and 7 when utilizing the jump jets. The solution for the problem made us go back and rework how things were installed into the Mech, because the solution called for an Inner Sphere XL Gyro to be installed. This filled the Center Torso 'slots' entirely, and the equipment that had been located there (one jump jet, and a fair amount of FFA) had to be relocated into the side torsos. But, replacing the Gyro allowed a weight saving that was put into a further two Clan DSHSs, one in each side torso. This resulted in the Mech having a total of 14 Clan DSHS, which only mitigates some of the heat generated by 210-meter leaps while firing both ER Large Lasers. The pilot that claimed the Goshawk did not feel that the 'minor' spike of three 'points' of heat was a major detriment to the design. She happily ran the Mech through further testing and proclaimed that she just loved it. The last I saw of the Mech was spying one of my Techs painting a Terran Goshawk onto the right torso, along with the words 'Lady Hawk'. If you come across any further Goshawks that are for sale, please contact the nearest Stygian Compact Trade Combine representative. Payment will be prompt in any currency you specify, or the equivalent in Rare Earth materials. Need more Germanium or Hafnium for your Laser cores? Honestly I hated this compared to the Archer, Trebuchet, or Catapult. Because most of these other fire support mechs could serve some other role.. like archers joining the attack lance and mixing it up with medium lasers and punching, catapults jumping over terrain, and trebuchets with their superior speed. The lack of arms and limited close-range armament means it can end up in a pickle if it is pushed to the ground or if it got stuck in a close-range engagement. If we wanted a dedicated fire support, we always chose the Awesome over this one, less of a minimum range problem with the PPCs over LRMs, no worrying about ammo, or problems with falling down and not being able to get back up.

Greetings Professor. Ah, the Grizzly battlemech. A fairly popular Mech on display at the Hellsport Mech Museum, but one that needs to be pulled from public display for general maintenance. The Mech Museum only has one Grizzly Mech in the inventory, and that one only, because one of the Legions was able to capture it while it was in depot for repairs. Most of the Solahama units were destroyed in battle, with few parts surviving intact for salvage, so the capture of the Grizzly was seen as a 'good thing' at the time. Over at the Mek Werks, Jason and his crew loathed working on the thing. They encountered every problem you mentioned, and even a few more. What they turned over to the Museum was basically a 'stock' Grizzly but with the armor plating issues ironed out, and other issues addressed as well. Once moved to the Museum, the grizzly's weapons were put on display behind the Mech's chassis and the Fusion Engine was pulled out and replaced with a mock-up. The Mech will never again move on its own power unless the Museum can fund the reinstalling of the fusion engine, so as to return it to the Mek Werks for further repairs and refurbishment. Which I might add, is not a thing that Jason and his crew really like to do. A recent suggestion was to use a couple of cranes to lay the Mech down, and then ship it off to one of the remaining Hellsport manufacturing sites, and allow them to refurbish it. The cost-benefit analysis is currently ongoing, and I could see that happening instead of moving it to the Mek Werks. The Grizzly is a favorite display for the sons and daughters of former Ghost Bear Elementals and the families of the few former Ghost Bear Warriors who have become Compact Citizens after their captures. I believe it is seen as a sort of 'touchstone' to their shared past off-world, even though their current lives are far better than their various past experiences. This 'touchstone' thing is also why a couple of Clan Ghost Bear Elemental Suits are on display beside the Grizzly Mech as well, which is part of the Clan Wing of the Museum. I believe that at least one of the suits on display was the suit worn by at least one former Elemental and the only one that repeatedly and deliberately crosses the exclusion zone to actually touch the suit and examine it in more detail. One of the former Ghost Bear Pilots also visits regularly and gets within touching distance of the Grizzly Mech, but rarely does make contact with the machine. I personally think that the Mech was the 'ride' of a personal friend of his in his former life. I hope that all is well with you and your people. And keep a close eye on the Capellans. They can't be trusted, even a century now after the Great Betrayal of the old Star Lions Corps, which as you know, eventually became the Ghost Lions Legions.
