The Wolfhound is a truly amazing feat of engineering, especially since it was completed just as technology was coming back to the Inner Sphere. While the base model is good, the follow up in 3052, the WLF-2, is about as optimized a Light 'Mech as you can get with Inner Sphere grade technology.
Later variants generally tried to reinvent the wheel and didn't land quite as well. The FWLM has one with a silly Light Gauss Rifle. The most recent one did manage to follow up on the original and the upgrade "well-enough".

Just when people started thinking the Lyrans could only make the Commando when it came to light 'mechs, they dropped this instant classic. A light 'mech so good that the Kuritans built a medium just to try and kill it, and couldn't reliably do that.
I've played the WLF-2H. It's a lot of fun. Right up until your conservative use of the supercharger still backfires and you roll a 2 on your PSR.

Though, they did keep to the stiener design philosophy of make it heavy and no jump jets. They just learned a bit from their Davion allies and kept mobility as part of the design.

Light ppc are nice on lights to keep them at safe distance and still able throw shots down range. The capacitor varient let's a light mech punch up for only tons.

You know what I can't figure out, why the hell did Andrew Steiner in the cartoon think it a great idea to solo fight a summoner in a 35ton mech with small lasers... And just stand infront of it? Still makes me scratch my head why that was the play 😂

    Hello Professor HeyTeeEn.
After facing hordes of Panthers fielded by a dedicated Kurita player in my old playing group, I cannot express my happiness when the Wolfhound was published in a TRO.
I fielded the WLF-2s most of the time. But I replaced all the standard medium lasers with four ER Medium Lasers. This variant was named the WLF-2 GL-A variant. The WLF-2 GL-B replaces the 4th ER Medium Laser for an 11th DSHS.
Both variants worked very well, and the Panther suddenly became a much lesser threat to my Mercenary Force.
I did field the Kell Hounds variant, the WLF-4W on occasion.
To make things 'cheap' enough for a Merc, I would buy any WLF-3S variants I could lay my hands upon. Even partial Mechs, which could be salvaged and built out of several partial Mechs. This would give me the Endo-Steel Frame and the triplet of ER Medium Lasers, nearly for free. Sell off the PPC and the small laser, Add a DSHS, and then cover the entire thing with Ferro-Fiberous Armor, and you have the WLF-2 GL-B variant, just built from WLF-3 Internal Structures. Often, those buying the ER PPCs would happily sell me ER Large Lasers, at bargain basement prices.

Oh boy do I love this machine, one the all time best light troopers in the setting. Perfect for light fire fights, and bodyguarding more powerful and expensive machines. It's armor is excellent for the weight, and it's speed is respectable. And all built around a simple, reliable, if slightly one note, and hot running weapons package.

If I were to come up with my own refit of the Wolfhound, I'd do the following:
Starting with a WLF-5 model, I'd ditch all of its weapons and put the following on it: a large variable speed pulse laser in the right arm, and six ER small lasers in the torso (ideally Clan spec if possible). The way I see it, this is a scout hunter that wants to get as close as possible to its target, the VSP is good at taking some armor off the target while it moves in close, and then you can open up with a barrage of small laser fire when you're close enough to finish it off. It does overheat slightly with an alpha strike, but backing off with a couple of the ER small lasers for a bit will fix that pretty quickly. If I can stick on some Clan-grade ferro-fibrous armor or even just light ferro-fibrous armor to slightly improve its protection, even better, since the XL engine is a point of vulnerability, but it'll let it chase down enemy scouts more easily (and with Clan ferro-fibrous armor I could save an extra half ton to add...say...another ER small laser or some light scouting equipment if I can find it).

The romanticised version of Grayson finding the Helm memory core? It boils down to a Marik colonel with a three to one advantage going: "No, this man who has allegedly murdered 12 million people fights too honorable, I have to surrender..."

I like putting 2 ER Med laser on it and 4 Med Pulse , it gives me enough firepower to harrass and a good close in punch if the enemy decides to engage all while keeping almost heat neautral.

I've heard of a variant of the machine that trades out it's engine for a Jenner's, drops the medium lasers to small (all forward facing), and drops a ton of armor. Seems like an inexpensive and dangerous skirmisher. A modern variant could use double heatsinks, Endosteel, and 6 tons of light Ferro-Fibrous, while upgrading the weapons to an ER PPC and 4 ER Small Lasers.

About the only way to improve the 1 series in the late succession war era is to pull the aft medium laser and add a flamer to an arm for anti infantry punch

Is there a version that boats micro pulse lasers or similar? ilClan-era vehicles keep trying to steal the light mech's job as a scout and such business competition cannot be tolerated
The wolfhound could be the perfect scout killer if it had several machineguns for forcing motive checks, 3 short-range damage in AS to match the hit points of most scout vehicles and infantry, 7/11 move to at least match the speed of a wheeled scout, and reflective armor to resist the most common light vehicle weapon - the medium laser.

      Hmmmm...
245xl, lmgx3 maybe 1 more and an array... 4 or 5jj. Lppc+cap or 3 erml since dhs.... Targeting computer maybe to really hit like a truck?
The 2H will hate you stripping the hppc for the machine gun array, but i got it to move 2 steps real fast before the Gyro under compensated. Forgot to update the battle com for the engine. Warehouse puppet strings ftw. Anand the boss has that vein popping from his forehead. Not like it broke...

I'm not enamoured with the ER large on the -2 for fighting Clanners. As awful as the Setanta is to work on, the extra heat of an ER large isn't worth it to try and keep up with clan tech that'll outrange you anyway. I'd rather have a brace of ER mediums instead, since their range brackets match the standard large much better, and just commit to brawling with the good speed.
