Even in later eras, the Centurion can be very useful as a garrison mech. Its low top speed's much less of a liability when deployed defensively, and it has a good mix of armament to engage enemies at any range, plus the missile launcher and autocannon can use special munitions for added versatility.
In the Battletech story I'm currently writing, the main character is a budding Solaris jock, and her 'mech is a CN9-AL that she's slowly refitting into a design similar to a big Vindicator.
If I had my choice of centurion. Al. Swap to ferrofiber swap the large to clan heavy large. Upgrade to double sinks +1 from laser swap. Swap the arm small to er med. Leave the chest to standard -heat demand. Leave lrm. Add about .25 tons armor.
The CN9-AL is such a good starting platform. The ridiculous amount of heat sinks means you can make lots of room for upgrades simply by swapping to DHS.
The Centurion was my first love mech thanks to me getting into the setting via MW:5 and i still love this simple Federated sons Rugged trooper mech aside from maybe the autocanon but Tbf aside from a random fluff lore blurb and an optional quirk that can be ignored it rarely comes into play for me so overall i still love this thing
Same, mw5 got me back into BT since I only played Mech assault when I was little. First time I had heard of the mech... And I was confused as to why some mechs weren't there (mad cat, mad dog etc.) However it quickly became my fav... Even if it was a starter mech. Took it on missions of every kind. It's good for being the front of an attack early on, and it's good for supporting the heavier mechs later on.
Little surprised the MWO shots made it in but not the painted mini, but glad I was able to contribute to this one still! Another good video wither way - and the games really made me appreciate the Centurion more than I did when I first started my Mechwarrior career!
Hello Prof. The Centurion has been a mainstay of most of my armies since the 3025 Era. Like yourself, I upgraded as quickly as possible to Endo-Steel and FFA, freeing up tonnage for upgrading the LRM launcher to a class 15, with Artemis, more armor, etc. I also dabbled with the Gauss variant as well. As a Medium Sniper, that worked fairly well, and I was able to offload all my Hollander Mechs to other players, giving me the funds to 'double down' on Centurions. And then, of course, there is the Yen Lo Wang. Always a favorite. What's not to like about a Guass Rifle and an LRM-20, backed by an ER Medium Laser? You have to replace stuff with Clan Tech, but works and is pretty powerful in the field.
I only started playing Mechwarrior/Battletech recently, the only two games so far being the recent turn based one and MechWarrior 5 Mercs. The Centurion you get at the start of Mercenaries served as a nice intro to various weapon types, just enough of energy, autocannons and missiles to give you an idea of what each was like. It can serve as a nice support mech to supplement a lance. The biggest downside for me was if you took anything more than armor damage, it seemed to take a long time to repair it compared to other mechs.
So from technical stands point how hard do think it would be slap a binary Laser in that right arm. Ive got soft spot for that weapon. It's served me well even with all its faults
I loved the Centurion back in the day but have found over time that love waned pretty hard. Initially, it was great. HALF AN ATLAS! What's not to love? Well...the fact that as a "front-line" trooper, it's kinda meh. The thing is a walking ammo-explosion waiting to happen. Compared to the Vindicator, a 5 tons lighter front-line trooper, I'd take the Vindicator any day of the week. Sure, the Centurion has the potential for a bit more damage but its lack of survivability is a huge sticking point for me. EDIT: Oh, yeah. Plus the idea of a Line Trooper having non-standard parts hurts a bit.
It's a trooper 'mech, its clear use case is "We need a 'mech here to blow up and/or defend some shit, but we don't want to spend _ALL_ the C-Bills to do so."
9:05 clearly we can see the decline of technology here in the 31st century. Flanigan's is running Windows 10 as their office computer operating system 🙂.
@ProfessorHeyTeeEn nope yep, I completely agree, Windows 10 runs great. Actually it would have been fantastic if somehow you could have had Windows XP running in the background 😀. And somehow in the 31st Century Apple is still in business and doing great 😊.
The Centurion is a very basic and average medium Mech. The mediocre speed and armor and the large amount of ammo make it very vulneral and prone to ammo explosions. It works reasonably well as a support for heavier Mechs but is not great to hold the frontline on it´s own. On the positive side the Mech can be quite versatile with a variety weapon ranges and the ability to use different types of special ammo. It also has very little problems with heat management.
The centurion is a solid design not perfect and they really should have swapped out the autocannon and LRM for better models. Or had the AL variant or something close to it be the stock model from the beginning
3:01 wait, this is clearly Blakest propaganda, war of 'star league aggression', that was a war of liberation and preemptive attack before we were attacked us we are the good guys after all 😀😄😄.
No, Not a fan of Pulse Lasers? They are the best weapons in the game. For IS the best short range weapons. They are far more accurate, resulting in more hits than any other weapons, and that translates into more damage on target. They have truncated max range, but you usually miss out at those ranges anyway so not that big a loss, and when combined with longer range weapons, such as the ER-PPC or ER-LL, it's a proper balance. As for IS XL-Engines. NO-NO-NO complete crap. If a mech can make 7/11 movement (+4 mod) minimum then it can benefit from an XL. If it can't then the XL is an extremely expensive liability. There is no point in giving a Centurion an XL Engine when it can do its job perfectly well with a cheaper and much less vulnerable standard and a slight cost in speed. This mech is not a scout mech, its a medium support mech. It's job is to accompany larger mechs (Archers, Warhammers, Stalkers) and give them backup. For this job 4/6 is fast enough, while loosing a side torso and shutting down is NOT helping.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. And you are not going to take as many shots with Pulse Lasers compared to regular lasers, due to their terrible range (for IS versions of the weapons, of course).
@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn No, That's why you pair them with PPCs or LL (especially ER) You don't use them at long range - that's what the long range weapons are for. you use them at close range, where they will rip up apart. You don't use the ER-LL while using the MPLs, they are 2 different weapon systems for 2 different reasons. The Cerberus uses its 2 GR at long range, and its MPLs if someone tries to get inside its minimum range. These are especially good for missile boats. An Archer or Longbow is mich better with MPLs. it sits back and fires its LRMs until some light fast Mech runs up on you, so it can pick away inside your minimum range, then your MPLs cut them to pieces, and THAT is where you need that -2 th - ok you have a 4 gunnery, they have a +4 jump, into woods +1 and you had to walk to keep them from shooting you in the back +1 giving your ML a 10 to hit (16.7% chance to maybe do 5pt that's 5*16.7%= 0.83 average damage) but my MPL -2 needs 8 (41.7% at 6pt that's 6x41.7%=2.5 average) even if you had the heat and crits to mount 2 ML to my 1 MPL that's still only 1.67 to my 2.5, meaning I would still do nearly twice the damage you do. That's the power of Pulse Lasers. Then there's the SPL often over looked and meligned but it is one of the best small weapons in the game. The IS/SL version has a truncated max range, which makes it the least effective of the pulse weapons, but still a decent weapon, when used in conjunction with other longer ranged weapons (as above with ER-PPC/LL) but it really shines in fast mech service. Top tier medium trooper mech. The Centurion is the bestest boy. 👍

Centurion is possibly my favourite IS mech. The look, the stats, it’s a great allrounder
It is THE trooper/main line machine
Get in, do the job, get out (most of the times) + really good loking one

the Centurion always has a slot in my Davion lances in table top Battletech it's never let me down

I usually deploy Centurions in pairs and usually in a lance where theres one or two other heavies. 2 Cents, 1 Orion, and an Archer being my fav.

I took this to Solaris VII and fitted it with an AC/20 before I even knew about Yen-Lo-Wang.
@@alexandrefalardeau8297 People sticking LRMs on Solaris 'mechs are weird. AC/20s all the way.

Yes, but it's gonna be Necromo ( I mean the name is just asking for it ), and it won't happen until the Jihad era

If I weld in some extension into limbs of my Hecatoncheires would the pirates think it is an some custom Cyclops?
I've never liked the Centurion. The Enforcer both looks better and has a more clear use case IMO.

The Centurion is honestly a bigger better Thorn. It's meant to be the Army in the phrase "you and what army"
I always dump a ton of LRM ammo for more armor .
I don't think that is a bad idea, to be honest. LRMs are useful, but once things get more heated, armor is better.
but does it have the cylon head visor with the light that goes back and forth
That is the best way to look at it, for sure.
I miss tall!centurion

The mech I want to love but it just cant compare to a nice vindicator as far as trooper mediums go
Vindicators are great troopers as well, more reliable in general than the Centurion, but they suffer from some odd problems as well.

The Camerons were tyrants and despots.
Vote for CN11-O vid!
I will need a few minis (regular Centurions will do) to make it, it isn't too complex of a potential video.
Lot of ammo in side torso, not so much armor = booom.
