Aerospace Fighters are a major threats to battlemech at all times. So why are there so few AA-gun battery battlemechs?
Well, the Rifleman is available to everyone and people found it "good enough" for most of what it did. However, the Jagermech was created to fill in the gaps the Rifleman was supposed to have... and kind of failed at it. Poorly armored, armed with only ballistic long-range weapons, it could take down planes, sure, but was risky for ammo explosions.
It got better over time as it received a revamp to become 5 tons bigger, at least.

I ran a Jagermech DD in MWO when I still played. It had 2X RAC 5, 4X LMG, 3 ERML, and laser AMS. I named it The Shredder.
Lol anything with 2x Rac5 is the shreder
What engine? (I wanna steal this setup and try it)
@@AWholeLegionary Been a few years but the process to find that answer is fit all the weapons and enough heatsinks, then fit the largest engine that will fit. Remove as much armor from the legs as required to fit an engine. It was probably an xl engine if that helps.
@Akabans999 No, 2 RAC 5 plus 4 Light MG for crit seeking purposes.
Remember only deploy the Jagermech when using quirks and you’re facing aircraft. That -2 against aircraft is brutal. In particular the DDa variant.
@@michaelkimberling7307 That would be the best plan, but at some point during the Succession Wars or the Jihad, you just deploy what you have on hand.
My beloved Dakka Darling. It doesn't matter to me that the Rifleman is objectively a better platform, it doesn't matter to me that it's just waiting for an excuse to explode of its own volition. I got one basically for free in HBS Battletech, and in the spirit of the Succession Wars, you take what you get. And it has never done me wrong. Just stand on a hill in the back and fire until all the guns go click.
Funnily enough, my perfect upgrade to the JagerMech basically turns it into a Bizarro Rifleman that deals 8 damage from each arm with ballistics and 5 damage from each arm with energy weapons. Drop the ACs, swap to a 260 XL, Endo-Steel, and double heat sinks. Slap an ER Medium in each side torso, a Light PPC on each arm, CASE II on each arm, and then a Light Gauss Rifle on each arm, with three total tons of ammo for the pair of them, giving you 24 rounds of continuous fire starting at extreme range. And, since gauss rifle ammo is inert, I loaded it into the CT and Head slots. All this still gives you just enough weight to have around 10 tons of armor, or 11 with Light Ferro-Fibrous. It does everything both it and the Rifleman were meant to.
Did you give that prison mech to Glitch too?
@BlackIce3190 it's possible. Been a couple years.
In hbs battletech, all I did to the Jagermech was drop the AC 2's add armor and medium lasers. It's really about all you can do except add jump jets. I tried putting an AC 20 on it, but it was way too slow.
This thing exists because sometimes you just want to feel that DAKKA.
@@joeblack5393 Sometimes you just want ballistics for the noise they make.
IMO the Jagermech is wildly underrated, in large part because folks try to use it for things outside its design parameters. I think it's objectively superior to the Rifleman in the AA role, especially if you load flak ammo.
Newtown Industries likes to lean into the max-range AA role with their basic refit kit, which swaps the AC5s for AC2s, putting one ton of ammo for each pair of guns (so you can run one flak and one standard if you want) and improving the armor protection significantly.
This is an interesting mech that makes sense as a mobile AA battery in-universe. But on the table, it begs for modification. The LRM one is nice, as you have some semblance of armor; your proposed AC5/LRM10 version would be even better. Personally, I like taking a base model, swapping the AC5s for two more AC2s, 4 medium lasers, and actually useful levels of armor. Like an upgunned Blackjack. It is still focused on being an AA mech, but it is capable of dancing with mechs for a while. And you are loosing, potentially, 4 golden BBs every round. It is still a flawed mech v mech design, but at least it does both jobs well enough.
What you want is enough damage to force PSR on the aerospace pilots attacking you.
The JM6-B... was a whole unexpected surprise to see, during the 'Escort the Prince' mission well into the campaign for MW2:M... imagine if that model saw the light of day with lostech upgrades...
@@tehpw7574 Outside of a Ferro-Fibrous skin, there isn't much you could do without making a completely separate model.
I’ve seen some commanders who do a lot of business with the FWL switch out the AC/2s on some of the older models for surplus Extended LRM5s. While this weakens the AA capacity a bit, it does vastly increase the mech’s effective engagement range. Still somewhat of a niche upgrade, however.
@@cobalt968 That is an out of left field refit for sure, but I would like to see it.
This actually improves on the biggest selling point of using the AC2. Range. The thing which the PMAC2 and LAC2 skimp on, making them usually automatic no's from me. Especially since there's a lot more competition in long range direct fire by the time these variants tried to tackle the weight issue of the AC2.
But using ELEM racks? That's a novel idea worth examination
theres something else to be said on taking the partizan over this from a static defensive expense perspective: the partizan can have its crew knocked out or its turret stuck away from the enemy and detracked. This means when you retake a lost base you on average need to repair a tank or deploy a new mech.
edit: also it is easier, quicker and requires much less of a local industrial level to restock a tank's ammo stores
@@robrib2682 Ammo stores are generally not much of an issue on a lot of "standard" tank guns nowadays, as long as people can produce cordite and have access to tungsten.
@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn no, I'm saying it won't take 3 people and 2 cranes to rearm the tank
No mention of the Schiltron? Here's my sales pitch:
"Air defense cannons too short-ranged? Too many longer-ranged weapons engaging the same target, overkilling it but letting other bombers through?
Try the Schiltron, the finest SAM platform in existence! It's C3 unit allows it to integrate fire control channels and targeting data with other units, and it's deep ammo bins allow it to perform other support duties as well as air defense!
Putting the Integrated in Integrated Air Defense System since 3059!"
We have the rifleman at home.
My re-design went with 10 tons FF armour; 4xLAC5's each with a ton of ammo; 4x ML; 10/(20) h/s; CASE in each torso. BV:1356. It can be quite nasty,up close and personal.
And the JagerMech?
To shreds, you say?
I mean, the French name for it make it sound VERY threatening. Might be reverse psychology at play.
Even in my bloody Bottletekque I cannot escape the f'ing French
Et qu'est-ce que tu vas faire a propos de ca?
@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn Whine about their influence not only on the homeland's language and culture but even an interstellar kingdom of Davions, lmfakao
As maligned as IS medium pulse lasers are, they kill elementals very effeciently. Particularly for the BV.
@@johntrotter7372 about the only thing you will outrange with them are the light weapons on Battle Armors. But 4 standard mediums, at the same weight, will be better at killing battle armors as well...
I never really could get behind the AA design and the JM is the worst of the lot. It has an insanely blind and over protected cockpit for such a frail mech. But they are cheap and easy to acquire. We used the A hardpoints to mount 2MLs 2 AC5s and 2 SRM6s. You might hurt for a double HS or two.
It is cheap and it has range. it isn't much but those are in fact positive qualities.
And it can and will shoot down VTOLs and light ASF assets.
If I recall kallon has restarted jagermech production on Wernke III along with shadow hawks, penetrators. and wolverines. how much of that is new lines or salvaged stuff is unclear.
also the best way to make a rifleman 3N is basically just modify it to be a 2N but with 2 more heatsinks and more armor.
The only design failure in my eyes is mounting the cockpit in centermass
Jager-double fed suns because double dacca
its' a 65 ton urbie
Ugh yes the embarrassment of House Davion our greatest disappointment
Prof, what's your favorite mech that uses Silver Bullet?
There are so few "stock ones' that use the Silver Bullet gauss rifle that it is hard to say.
I do think the Carronade is a cool setup for it, however.
funny you should accuse kurita of "stealing" when Davion is a fine example of theft. The stole the Cataphract from the Capellans, they steal all kinds of things from others because their mech creators are too weak in the intelligence category to come up with one on their own
