My zone won’t turn off!! Do I replace the entire valve or just the solenoid?
I hope the LNK2 Wifi module is better than the original LNK WiFi module. The original is a POS.
It is better.
Thank you sir for this video
You’re welcome
Is that the Ditch Witch SK850? I drove one for an erosion company I worked at. Absolutely loved that thing. I couldn’t recommend more highly how fast it speeds up trenching vs walk-behind trenchers.
This one is the SK1050. I love it. It really is a game changer.
Thank you, I’ve gone out and started my own company at 35. I get asked to do jobs that sometimes aren’t 100% in my field. I start a job tomorrow morning and I was really suspicious it’s the solenoid I’m gonna need to replace. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Your Welcome and welcome to the biz. Good luck and holler at me if you have any questions.
Great videos man
Thank you. I appreciate it
What about it you replaced and not working either?
It could be that a wire is cut somewhere between that valve and the controller. If it is spliced before that valve in another valve box that splice could be bad too. Make sure the valve does work manually.
I don't know if anyone has told you or not but you have TT on your shirt. Go Red Raiders. Thanks for sharing.
lol. Yes. Go Tech.
I remember the Hunter rep telling me: 0-10 was short, 10-20 somethings wrong, 20-60 is good and over 60 is an open circuit. Another helpful video Kelly.
Thanks for the info. That is very helpful. That makes sense because when I tested one yesterday at a house it was about 30 and it was good.
I found one of these exact ones in my garage when I bought my house. I love it, but I can't find one that is exactly like it. Even your link takes me to a different one. I want one exactly like this one!! I don't want to have to twist the pole or bend over to grab the release handle...
I like the new format Kelly. Great advice on testing solenoid coil resistance. Fortunately manufacturers also have this on their data sheets.
Thanks. I appreciate it. I did several of these videos testing different solenoids that are going to be rolling out. I hope they will be helpful to irrigators, technicians, and homeowners. I appreciate your comments and insights as always.
This thing breaks down very fast.
Great vid! Question about 18AWG sprinkler wire connectors....do you have a recommendation for what is best/long-lasting? Thx!!!
Great attitude and business approach.
Just a few things I’ve learned from my dad and a few other good business men and women.
Black is industry standard here in Australia
That’s what I heard the guys say from the Waterpro channel. Have you seen them?
We use red as live black as neutral green as ground in jamaica
Aw Jamaica. Been there once. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the explanation I need the blue capped 4 ft spray heads I'll check out the rain bird site.
You’re welcome
At least they used different color wires and not all black w/ some color code at the end. To each their own i guesse haha
lol yeah that’s right
Content is content..
My face fly net would come in handy for this.
Yes it would have. 😂
what is that peace and can you buy replacements?
The part that goes onto the meter will have to come from a municipal plumbing supply store. The other parts are available at an irrigation supply store.
I just got one of those soft expanding water hoses and every time I turn off the water I get that bubble action. I kept trying to fix! I was so frustrated. I’m so glad I saw this on your video! Now I can relax and just water! lol Thank you!
Yes this happens with those type of hoses and when you leave a sprayer on the end of the hose.
Pushing back the same water that's flowing out. Brilliant.
Good time saving tips. Well done, and thanks for posting. (My box looks almost as disgusting, but does work.)
You’re welcome
Dude must be a electrician lol. Good work and helpful info
lol 👍🏻
Scouring the internet for info, maybe you can give some advice. Started with a shorting sprinkler timer. Re did the LV wiring to the valve solenoids. No more short. Now i have a zone not working. Hunters 1 1/2 PGV valve that isnt sprinkling when activated by the timer. Confirmed 24v at timer and at solenoid. Replaced the 24v solenoid to start. No dice. Took out and cleaned diaphragm. Looked dirty but okay. Still no water down valve. My thought is either bad diaphragm or possibly something wrong with the metal solenoid exhaust port mechanism. Any advice before i just order a new diaphragm?
My first guess is the shorting timer is somehow the culprit. First, connect the wire for the zone not working to the terminal for a zone that you know works at the timer and see if it comes on. If that does not work, check the ports under the solenoid to see if they are plugged using a wire or flag. There willl be ports in the bonnet and body. Usually there will be 2 or 4 ports to check. Not sure on that valve. If that does not work and you don’t have a diaphragm, it is often cheaper to buy the whole valve and just use the parts you need (I doubt the diaphragm is the problem anyway). Even if the diaphragm is cheaper, I would probably buy a new valve and replace everything possible (bonnet, diaphragm, solenoid and plunger, spring…)by unscrewing the bonnet if the two troubleshooting methods above do not work.
@@billw572 thank you for the reply! i did start by swapping the zones, and the problem zone did still not work, even on a known working terminal (and vice versa) . And just before your reply i did check the 2 solenoid ports for obstruction. No apparent restriction. I then removed the solenoid while the valve was “live” , covered the solenoid thread with my thumb assuming that would guarantee flow through the solenoid port and reduce pressure above the diaphragm and force the valve to open and still no sprinkler flow. The diaphragm is cheaper than a whole new valve so i guess my boss wants to start there. Wish me luck!
@@billw572 convinced the boss to order the whole valve 😉💪🏼
That’s what I was going to say. Rebuild the entire valve. Does the valve operate manually to rule out it being a water problem or problem in the valve separate from the electrical. If the valve turns on and off manually then there may not be a problem with the whole valve, maybe just the solenoid.
Good advice. @billw572
I can’t believe a pro did that.
Me neither.
thanks
You're welcome!
I have a sprinkler head leaking and I thought it might be my PEB valve, but there is no water leaking anywhere in the box or around the valve. I already replaced the sprinkler head and the new one leaks too... a constant stream of water out the top of the rotor... any ideas or thoughts? if you see this and could respond it would be much appreciated... thanks!
It could be that the valve is not shutting off all the way. It could have debris in it. You could turn the valve manually on and off a few times to try and flush it out. Doing this you will also be able to hear if the valve shuts off or not. If it still is leaking by, then the next step is to take it apart and clean it out. It also could be the diaphragm in the valve. The next thing would be to rebuild the valve. Now if the valve is shutting off and the head still leaks, it could be that it is at the end of the line and just draining out the water in the lateral lines. If that’s the case, a head with a check valve in it will work. But I would check the valve first.
My backflow preventer valve does not spray me when I turn the water off. I’m wondering if it is working properly if it doesn’t spray.
Yeah. Sometimes it is hard to tell. But if there is no back pressure or even back siphonage, it won’t spray out. But if you leave a sprayer on the end of the hose it should spray out once you turn the hose bib off.
Damn, you saved my ass man! I was totally going to screw up this install, something told me to search RUclips and found your video. My question is, the rain bird DC latching solenoids are sold separately correct ?
Yes the DC latching solenoids are sold separately.
I have the same models of valves in yard. The second zone now tries to turn on for a second or so then it clicks off and turns off the pump. Do you think the solenoid is bad and I can just swap that out? When installing new solenoid I assume it should be in closed position? Thanks!!
Could be the solenoid. I would test it first with a multi meter to see if it is bad before changing it.
What is the incoming normal pressure to the valve manifold normally house?
Varies by area. Around 60 psi is normal where we are. If it is higher than that you will be regulating it at the meter.
Don’t forget to put a ball valve
Yes. Good point.
I don’t understand why we’re using 1 inch instead of three-quarter does it matter can someone explain why not use inch and a half 2 inch definitely not half inch I just think three-quarter should be sufficient, but maybe you have a lot of plants bushes and trees
It really depends on what your output flow is. In most residential jobs 3/4 should be sufficient. But on a commercial job with bigger zones, you will go with a bigger size.
Guys use unions on both sides of the regulator manifold makes easier for repairs if you have to take it out
Some of the jobs we do there will be unions specified on all valves. Good way to do it.
That looks really good. The only problem that I would suggest is, if you put the valves in a box in the ground, then it makes it very hard to add lines to the system later down the road where if you have it above ground which I don’t really like it’s on the sightly, but it’s easier to dig the trench at the pipe I live in the desert and the ground is hard and my irrigation is a working progress when I have time so putting it in the ground all vowels would have to be in place ready to go unless you outside the box, any futures, but just made up the regulators in the boxwith the reducers reducers that would work just cap off the ones you’re not using in the future dig up the box and attach your pipe to whatever direction you wanna go
Thank you it sounds stupid but too many years went by where I was replacing nozzles and blowouts and couldn’t understand why then I put a pressure reducer 30 psi in line and never had a problem again plus I hung the drip tubing on the wire fence in a wave pattern to keep it abovethe little critters that like to bust the pipe to drink the water and a little bit of slack for repair never had a problem since
I enjoy your channel and have picked up a couple ideas. If you don’t mind…a couple things I suggest with those type of Toro valves is to 1-with the water on, take the bleed pin out, then take the round handle off and turn it upside down to wash out any dirt, rocks, etc. Then put it back together. The reason to do this is, if dirt or rocks get under the threads of the bleed pin, the valve will not shut off. 9 times out of 10 or more I don’t have to shut the mainline down. 2-The second thing with the 254,252 Toro valves is, always throttle the valve down a couple turns since these valves in particular, sometimes will not shut off or are very slow to shut off.
Good ideas. Thanks for the input. I will see what I can do.
This was a big help. Thank you.
You're welcome! Glad this helped.
Thank you for the videos. It has helped me a lot to learn more..God bless
Your welcome. Thank you.
This video makes almost no sense. With the water left on, there is no backflow. If city water pressure drops, a back flow preventer stops backflow whether it is on the spigot or each of the hose ends. In fact, putting it petmanently back at the spigot is required by many local codes. Further, most timer ends aren't designed to take the often short threads of the backflow preventer and they tend to leak if installed there. Leave your backflow preventer at the spigot and don't worry about this nonsense.
Thanks for the video that helped me diagnose my sprinkler issue. All of a sudden, both valves in valve box#2 stopped working. 1. Ohm'd valves at the controller for valve box#1 - GOOD (~53ohms) 2. Ohm'd valves at the controller for valve box#2 - <open> 3. Disconnected/cut the wires of box#2-valve#1 and ohm'd it - GOOD! (wtf?) 4. Tied the wires at the controller box and Ohm'd wires at box#2-valve#1 to verify wires - GOOD! 5. Inspected the waterproof ground wire nut in box#2 - Corroded! 6. Replaced all the waterproof nuts in the box#2 - ALL WORKING! Thanks!
Awesome. Good work. I’m glad you got it all working.
really good explanation, thx!
Thank you for explaining what it is used for. I was going to remove the one's on my house, but now I see where I just simply need to replace them. AWESOME!
Excellent video!
if i ever see you in person, i owe you a beer and a handshake. thank you for posting this and saving me so much $!
😆 you’re welcome
Can you test in ground without removal
Yes. You will cut the solenoid wires out of the splice. Then strip back some good clean wire and test it in the valve box.
Go back at night they donw fly at night
Thanks for the tip.
Is 16 AWG "marine wire" good for sprinklers? Wasn't sure if all 16 AWG wire are created equal. Thank you!
It could be. One of the main differences with irrigation wire is that is rated for direct burial, meaning it can be buried and the insulation will not break down. So marine wire could work, but it would be better to use wire that is for being buried in the ground.
