  • When designing and installing an irrigation system for any kind of sports fields, the location of the main line and valves is very important. So important that I would say it is the number one thing to get right along with head to head coverage.
If at all possible, keep all main lines and valves on the irrigation system off the field and outside the fence. This will ensure that if any problem occurs with the main line or valves it will not affect with any play time on the field. If you have a leak on a valve of a main line break, it being off the field it will not flood the field or cause a delay in any games or practices. Plus you can dig it up and fix it without having to dig up the field causing a potential place for a player to get hurt. Sometimes it can not be avoided and you have to run a pressured main line through the field, but if you must keep it on the edge and do not run it through the middle of the field.
I have seen a lot of examples of valves and main line run through the middle of the field and it is always a big deal and issue when there is a problem. I've seen buried valves leak in the middle of an out field of a baseball field and I have seen valves break and flood the side line of a football field. I've worked on buried valves that took forever to find and fix a softball fields. And let me tell you, it is always a time crunch when working on sports fields. There is always a game or practice that you must work around.
But when the main line and valves are off the field, it is much easier to work on them and fix any problem without stopping play on the field or having to work through the night trying to get things done before the next game.

Great advice! I am the irrigation manager at a school district with 65 schools. When we design a new irrigation system keeping the main off field of play is something we do as well. One thing we also do is install isolation valves every couple hundred feet on the mainline. This will allow you with a looped system to isolate a section of the main for repairs and still allow the rest of the field to water. I also noticed in your valve box it didn't appear you had gate valves in front of the valves. We also add a gate valve in each box which allows a single valve to be repaired without having to shut the main down and drain.

also, any service box on the field could be a running/tripping hazard for players - could you imagine if a player tripped, slipped, or rolled an ankle while trying to catch a ball during game winning play? Hard plastic cleats on a hard plastic lid... wooops

Yes not good. Then the player has to have surgery that costs thousands and they come back and sue the school or team and the contractor who put it in. I’ve seen it happen.

I can’t believe this isn’t the main reason. We played soccer with valve covers 1 foot outside the boundary. One had a broken cover. So now we have players chasing down balls and stepping in a shin deep hole.

Thanks for sharing! I need a go to brother! lol How much would you charge for a chat online to figure out a design? I’ll have or try to have all the information you need.

Great tip Kelly. You would think it would be common sense, but unfortunately it’s not.

Where would to lean someone when there just starting to add irrigation to there services to learn about full system installs and design?

Valves and mainlines on the field of play? Isn't that home field advantage???😂
