Should you winterize your sprinkler system or your backflow device?
The answer is yes, but the there are some things you need to consider.
The number one thing to consider is your location and what you winter is like in that location. Once it freezes in your area and it doesn't get above freezing until spring, then you must turn your system off and get all the water blown out of it. But if you live in the south, where it might only freeze once or only occasionally freeze, you will leave your system on and still water on the warm days, while making sure the backflow device is insulated and covered up.

I am from the western part of the U.S. where the winters get pretty cold and I have worked in this industry for 25 years. I hesitate to share where I work as I don't want to promote my business on another persons channel uninvited. I do get a good bit of business out of TX and FL especially when these freezes happen. But I would like to give some input. Insulation only slows down freezing...and warming up. Without a heat source it will become the same temperature inside the insulation as it is outside of it without a heat source. If it stays cold long enough it will still freeze with only insulation. I don't know about the insulation bag in this video but it doesn't appear to have much R value if any. There are several options. I am just saying shop around. I would never recommend using house insulation and tape. I have seen that get wet and now you have helped it freeze as it creates an ice bag.
Also It is important to drain the body of the assembly. Turn the water source off and then open the test cocks, the 4 valves with the screwdriver slots on each valve and that will drain most of the water out of the body. Some models require removing the relief valve cover and drain the water from behind the diaphragm to where the relief valve goes into the body then put it back together. Then turn the handles on the ball valves to a 45 so the ball valve is part way open and part way closed. This leaves room for water to escape as the water on either side of the ball freezes and expands. Not a 100% guarantee that it won't break, but it is the best you can do if you leave it installed. All the manufacturers recommend leaving the valves at a 45. Then use an insulated pouch or cover if desired.

Drained the backflow preventer, wrapped the pipes, and covered with an insulation bag. Failed to shut off water source, so the inlet ball valve cracked from another Feb freeze in TX. Is it possible to just replace the inlet shut off ball valve? And if so, do you have a video on that? Thanks!

Do use enclosures the the ones that look like a rock.

Yes that is a good thing to do. It does give it a little more protection.

Hello, I have a backflow device that was installed when i purchased my home. Later on I had a well dug that i use only for irrigation is it necessary that i have a backflow preventer installed on my irrigation system? I live in Jacksonville FL and my valve froze because I didn't do what you're explaining on this clip! Thanks for any advice.

Yes it is necessary to have a backflow device on your irrigation system even if it is on a well. It is to protect the ground water just like you would be protecting city water from backflow.
