Female Writer Explains... The Double Standard
There's a double standard about the coverage of male and female entertainment. How extensive is this double standard... and where does it come from? I tackle this issue. Hopefully not repeating the obvious or preaching to the choir, but here we go!

    There is a charm to running past people, while you are forced to run everywhere. Flying has make it so empty and soulless. It should be rare. WoW has a problem with optimization. It's an expectation. Day 1, you better have the right addons and you have to have watched guides prior. Where the hell is the fun in that?! But hey, it's not for me then. I just go somewhere else.

    I don't get the deal with getting mad over sexualization in media. In the most simple sense it's media that has elements that try to evoke more base/basic emotions. Like, you know... horror for example (or romance). And like horror (or romance), relaying on sexualization can often mean you have schlock on your hands, but no one is out there boycotting ridiculous and silly gore p0rn horror stuff. I think this has everything to do with North American prudishness and nothing else. The strangest thing about the video is that lady likes Oblivion. Oblivion is in my top 3 most hated games of all time. And she somehow likes Heroes V more than II and III. I call bullshit on her old games cred!

    There is only one thing that men can do to combat this anti-male bias. Ignore it and do their own thing. Make content, write books, create games, vote with their wallets for the products that cater to their desires. Walk away from women who demonise male desires and marry the ones who understand them. Have children, build homes, defend their families. Basicallt, men just need to do what, en large, they've always done.

    Glad you made the video. You make excellent points all around. I had just a few minor comments along the way: 4:05 Saying women prefer textual and men pornography is not quite right. Men tend to be more visually oriented than women, hence why men tend to gravitate towards visual media. Which is also why men tend to like genres with more visual spectacle (action) than women (interpersonal romance/drama). There is something lost when trying to convey action through the written word which is not the case for romance/drama. I would even say the written word enhances romance/drama. 8:00 Most people think men that like sports/dumb Hollywood blockbuster action flicks/superhero comics and movies/shounen anime and manga/hentai and eroge as less intellectual/stupid/worse. I don't think this is a gendered phenomenon necessarily, it's just that men are criticized, shamed and ostracized more heavily for their interests than women are. 32:50 Wow, this notion of art having meaning only as propaganda is so wrong I'm surprised anyone outside of crazy modern empty headed activists actually believe it. Art (and philosophy) are diametrically opposed and opposite to propaganda (and political/ideological commentary or ambition). A piece of media being propaganda means its impossible for it to be art. Its a literal either or binary. It's crazy how much damage these "everything is political" ideologues have done and continue to do to our modern society, but to me its even crazier how little push back they actually receive, both in the past and now. 42:25 What I'm worried about is that this infection is spreading to other places in the world. For example the company I work at (I'm an East Yuropoor) has been bought by a larger western one, and the large company is of course pushing identity politics heavily. And like you mention many people don't know about any of this, so they might be buying it (hard to say if they are genuinely doing so or just going along and trying not to rock the boat). It's the same on the political front - the EU pushes all sorts of garbage, and I don't think most of our politicians can even recognize it, and the ones that know something is fishy are usually very bad at articulating why, which oftentimes has the opposite effect and makes them look like backwards lunatics or conspiracy idiots. When GamerGate hit I thought that in 10 years time this identity politics BS would be as neutered as creationism was at that point... Well it's been more than 10 years now and it doesn't seem like it's budged much. In many ways things are even worse now. And who knows how much worse it's going to get before things start getting better. I think there is a real danger of there being a lost generation of men and women that are going to get fucked over by this and essentially live their whole lives alone (no friends and no partners ever), isolated, childless and miserable. And considering how the economy works around couples and families, and how many countries have it bad in terms of population replacement and ethnically dying out, and the whole automation/AI stuff on the horizon, who knows how all of that is going to go down in terms of social fabric, jobs, state wealth (social security for retirees), general individual fulfillment and everything else. Anyway, great job overall on the video.

      Thank you! I'm sorry to hear that parts of Eastern Europe may be experiencing this kind of pressure as well. I heard that the recent trashfire game "Dustborn" (?) came out of Europe, so I imagine that at some point the EU will breathe down certain countries necks. As you see, the infection is spreading, and we may have to see things get worse before any hope of things getting better. I'm hopeful, however, that maybe one day... one day... people will get a clue. >.>; p.s. Re "art as propaganda"... Just look up Walter Benjamin. The School of Frankfurt was particularly active in the early 1900s, so it's been around for a LONG time. Now it's being talked about as the status quo in unis these days. I personally think that Benjamin was throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Faced with the "crisis" of modern mass production, he thought art lost the sublime and value. I think he was just plain wrong. :) But thanks to him, a lot of people ride on his coat tails and use it as an excuse to batter people for their entertainment choices.

      @@chiekokurokumo The Dustborn story is a sad one. The dev of that game made what many consider the best point and click adventure game of all time back in 99 (The Longest Journey), and the sequel while not on the same level is still loved by many (Dreamfall). The history of those devs is a perfect picture of what identity politics does to the creative process and otherwise talented artists. Completely subverts, corrupts and destroys them.

    • @Wind_Falcon
      @Wind_Falcon 15 дней назад

      @@chiekokurokumo I haven't looked much into this, but getting government/EU funding for creative projects is not rare or difficult in Europe. Also these devs are Norwegian which is not in the EU. I think people are over-blowing this detail. I assume they applied for a cultural grand and got it based on previous work and proven track record while being an indie studio, not necessarily on a deal of pushing an ideological message. I've watched films made with similar government funds and they were perfectly fine, no big identity politics stuff (a good Norwegian one is "A Thousand Times Good Night"). Though the EU is full of identity politics pushers mainly because many among the elected and non-elected people in the institutions are woke globalists, or more accurately in their case - federalists. Though they seem to have been able to operate mainly because most people didn't pay much attention to them, and slowly they seem to be getting replaced or changing their tune now that people are starting to notice whats happening and pushing back. So commenting on the EU is a bit more complicated, it has its issues, some connected to the identity politics stuff and some not, but it's not as black and white as some commentators on the net make it seem its like (EU always bad and terrible).

    Yes to this! I do think there's a difference between porn and written word porn in that no physical people are being objectified in the book. Now, of course, this can happen in book cover models. BUT, in general... Like you said, for women it is more of a whole package, BUT women will totally put things onto men they just meet. Why? Who knows! Biology is weird. Having said that, it's important for women to recognize they are building castles in the air. Their thoughts are not real about thar barista...

Double standard aside, it seems as though feminism reacted to a valid issue of some men going too far in how they objectified women they were attracted to. But no matter the new restrictions there were still bad actors so the next form of shaming and covering up was implemented.

      Yes. When it comes to deeply intimate issues, people tend to take extreme positions, unfortunately. But your first question has been something I've been considering for a while now. My friend and I were discussing it. We'd decided that it depends on the individual and the circumstances involved.

    • @Wind_Falcon

      The thing is that feminism didn't actually do anything about those men that go overboard... And definitionally they can't do anything about them. These men do what they do because there is real female demand for it, and they find success going overboard, regardless if they burn some women along their way. For feminism to stop that they would have to police female desire, which they don't want to do, and it's not obvious if they even can do, at least for those women that like the extreme men. What feminism did was make everything more complicated for the regular people out there.

    • @Wind_Falcon
      @Wind_Falcon 15 дней назад

      The problem is that feminism can't do anything about the men that go overboard because that type of male behaviour is actually desirable and gets them what want, regardless if some women get burned along the way. If feminism wanted to curb that they would have to police female desire, and at this point they neither really want to do that, nor is it even evident that they can do it. What actually happened instead is that these extreme men run free and still do what they have always done and get what they are after, but the social environment for everyone else - the regular majority - got significantly worse by feminists' efforts.

    catering to a majority ostracizes those that dont fit in eventually leading to violent results and/or nihilism

    • @chiekokurokumo
      @chiekokurokumo 16 дней назад

      I would argue that catering to any kind of people group--minority or majority--will lead to violent results. As someone who has stood on the fringes of society in a variety of ways, it's been hard to carve out a space where people learn to stop judging me and let me just live my best life. That being said, forcing anyone to not be true to what they need is dangerous and will, as you point out, lead to unhappiness that could spill out into society at large.

    • @Wind_Falcon
      @Wind_Falcon 15 дней назад

      Catering is different to persecution. Persecution leads to violence. You can cater to whomever you want, and as long as the rest of the groups are left alone to their own devices even if not catered to, things will be hunky dory. Society will always have a hierarchy of values, meaning it won't cater to everyone equally, there will always be some that are catered more or less to. That's just a fact of life.

    Tolkien struggled with what the nature of the Orcs was - why would Eru/Ilúvatar/God condemn souls to such a vile, degraded, nearly irredeemable existence? So he considered making them fleshly automata driven by an external will. But scenes in LOTR clearly show Orcs, while “made” to be cannon fodder, as having motivations of their own: to be free from Big Bosses (whom Tolkien said they feared and hated) and to govern their own affairs (plundering, eating, whatever). Whether descended from Men or Elves, they would have been reproducing in “the manner of the children of Ilúvatar”. So of course there were female Orcs and Orc children. And I assume their dark overlords kept them away from the roaming warbands in awful underground breeding pits or whatever. But here we have Orcs led by Adar, their literal once-Elven progenitor who has retained some measure of empathy for them. I doubt Orcs had happy families. They were probably miserable and brutal and many of those half-feral children probably never made it to adulthood (although I’m sure they grew up fast). But they can’t have let all their children die either. Goblins were what hobbits called Orcs (Bilbo just happened to encounter less imposing specimen in the Misty Mountains). Goblins = Orcs. The Uruk-Hai (Orc-folk, in the Black Speech) were a stronger, taller, more man-like breed, but they were still distinct from half-Orcs that could live among humans (Bill Ferny?). Tolkien didn’t really bother classifying them the way an RPG or video game would… I dunno. There’s a lot wrong with TRoP but I’ve always wanted to see more of Orc society and I guess felt some sympathy for them being given such horrible lives. It’s not that they are unjustly maligned noble savages… more like innately traumatised attack dogs. Like, it’s not their fault Morgoth, Sauron and Saruman made them into these vile creatures, and it must suck to be them. But they’re still bad guys.

    • @chiekokurokumo
      @chiekokurokumo 19 дней назад

      I agree with this take. I can totally imagine orc women and a loose knit society, but I imagine it would be half feral and brutal.... and it isn't so that we target or judge humans but to consider general values for ourselves... but it does go to show that for all his work, even Tolkien struggled with his lore. :)

    An excellent video. I'll admit I didn't see all of it but that's mostly because everything you were saying, is what I already thought myself. For me it's simple, Warcraft is an IP inspired by Warhammer - with Starcraft inspired by Warhammer 40k - and had a very specific tone and setting. It was rather grim, serious and pulled no punches but wasn't afraid of some levity and wit here and there. It had decent enough writers to tell the story and build the characters. All that set the tone for WoW and then, over 20 long years, it shifted, gradually turning into something completely different. Modern Wow is not Warcraft, it's some sort of poorly written Saturday morning cartoon trying to emulate Warcraft but completely failing because the writers don't know what Warcraft was all about, don't know how to write mature stories and well... even what IS there is amateur work at best so I actually do think these people are not qualified writers. I have read lines of dialogue that were completely unacceptable in their grammar and sentence construction. Sadly, with the release of TWW, the trend continues. The quests are decidedly off-tone yet again - one asked my friend's Orc Warrior to play with orphans for god's sake - the tone is still friendship is magic and the actual dialogue is terrible. Characters are spouting exposition and speaking directly at the audience about their thoughts and feelings, which is how a teenager might write. Right now, everybody is high on Copium and in the honeymoon phase now that daddy Metzen is back but inevitably, they'll turn around, inhale the clean air and admit we never left the Shadowlands.

    When I think of a typical area in the game that oozes Warcraft, I immediately think of Frostfire Ridge. And lo and behold, it's the most masculine area in the game. Not just the geology of glaciers and volcanic instability, but also the hunting, the ogres, the enormous creatures wandering around. Now, Warcraft has feminine aspects as well and the game wouldn't be the same without them. But all I'm saying is that we've never had something like Frostfire Ridge since five expansions now.

    I find WOW to be interesting as a topic because while people are focused on the feminine nature of retail wow's story, I find that most of its problems start far sooner in Cataclysm. Cata revamps the world with plenty of military conflicts between the Alliance and Horde, which you think would be a return to form, but the main story is based around uniting against a world ending dragon, a cult, and a revived boss from Vanilla. It has a very neutral energy to it, like it lacks soul. Later on in WOD, when they tried to play up the masculine energy, and got big sub numbers for it, but dropped off hard due to a content drought, lack of social element and an awful end story brought about because players got "Orc fatigue" despite orcs being the main enemy and one of the draws to people coming back. BFA, though having multiple issues, on its surface has a military aspect to it and it's arguably the worst subcount of Retail WOW. Blizzard for over a decade has cultivated a core audience that doesn't care about narrative and prefers novelty instead, and every time Blizzard has narratively tried to spin things in a masculine direction with the sole exception of Legion post-WOTLK, it blows up in their faces. You can't really have an "Us" against "Them" story and have 3 raids with 3 different enemy types in 3 different locations in the expansion world. Especially when the other "Them" (opposite faction) is also working with the "Us" and whose leaders hang out but are still mortal enemies of each other. My TLDR though is that Blizzard players ask for this style of writing indirectly. They say they want an Alpha energy story but complain when the setting is an actual setting and not different enough for them. Half of what I've heard about War Within is how people are excited for the gameplay/cosmetics, and the other half about how hot Xalanath is or lack thererof. They don't care about the story really.

    • @chiekokurokumo
      @chiekokurokumo 27 дней назад

      Indeed! I've played a few starting zones in WoW now, and I can definitely say that how the story is shown is even more problematic than any other energies that might be erupting in current day. :) I think the transformation of story direction is potentially just adding salt to an already gaping wound, but yeah, hard to exactly say, which is why, when it comes to WoW, I can only guess or theorize, and wait to hear thoughtful responses from reviewers... Maybe one day, I too shall be able to revisit old zones and quest campaigns and see where the issue lies, but already from my small experiences of playing the "best opening storylines", I can see where the fundamental gaps are. SADGE.

    I don't think Asmon's point was about those books specifically only, or female oriented romance media in general even. The point is the double standard of how women/society view men's hobbies and their expectations of them in general, vs. women's. The reality is that both men and women are immature roughly equally as a population, and even when matured can enjoy immature hobbies. This isn't strange, bad or surprising, or at least it shouldn't be. But the problem is that men's immaturity in society is condemned beyond a reasonable level, while women get to both demand men to "grow up" (which rarely means for men to mature as individuals, but rather for them to become more subservient to the immature demands of women), while women get a free pass on their immaturity. Oftentimes its even worse - female immaturity is held up as their best standard to aim for. So men constantly get sh@t on, while women act just as bad while getting away scot-free if not outright encouraged. That's the issue Asmon is pointing out. Regardless of nicheness, there is a reason this shelf (and many like it) exist is many bookstores, while a mirrored shelf for men with lets say Gor books and similar never happens, and the reaction if it did would be vastly different.

      Agreed. I too touched on the double standard in my video. The double standard in regards to rhetoric is real, and as I pointed out, it is unhealthy. It leads to guys being unfairly judged. I also pointed out that women need to understand that a man enjoying fantasy needn't mean that they hold those expectations IRL. This whole "fantasy leaks into IRL" is so damaging. If I had any pushback for Asmon it's the statement about being perverted, which is true on one level, as I said, but how this is experienced is not quite the same, a clarification that some might find interesting. :) Asmon was giving a off-hand statement that I wished to add more nuance to. As for female immaturity and free passes... In highly conservative circles (let's say very conservative Christian circles with which I am familiar), there is more conversation about "male struggles with p#rn" than about female-focused content (like romance books). The reason is that male interaction with sexual content leads to physical interactions or has more "raunch", whereas there isn't a one-to-one correlation for women. The Christian romance genre (yes, it's a burgeoning genre) has become synonymous with clean romance (zero sex on the pages and no infidelity or extramarital sex), so for women, they can access their fantasy without breaking religious mores. I think this has seeped into the greater North American mindset that female fantasy isn't immoral, where male's interaction with fantasy intrinsically does. Which is bullocks. Female fantasy can be just as damage. Just more insidious. :)

    I'm 2 hours 38 mins in and not sure if it gets mentioned later, but I'm commenting now before I forget: Have you considered table-top roleplaying games? It is still a male-dominated hobby and men use it to tell tons of fictional stories. Also, these stories tend to be male-brain oriented, meaning, they have a lot of lore, worldbuilding, magic systems, etc., and emphasise emergent storylines over pre-defined plot and character drama. Incidentally, the most female-dominated parts of the hobby (for example, such games as Vampire the Masquerade) do the opposite - they emphasise character drama and relationships. Also, vampires. Because naturally. What I'm trying to say is, men do buy fiction books and tell fiction stories, but in an interactive format of TTRPGs. Maybe this gets pointed out later in the stream, though.

    • @chiekokurokumo

      @@chiekokurokumo yes, I get that. Enjoying the stream, so far. It's just that you and the article mention "fiction reading" and "leisure reading" time and time again, and I think that reading campaign setting books, adventures and lore for the TTRPGs also counts as "fiction reading" for "leisure". Because it is a leisure activity that involves a ton of fiction.

    • @chiekokurokumo
      @chiekokurokumo Месяц назад

      @@arcanefeline @arcanefeline Yeah. When they use the word "fiction reading" I'm assuming it is the writer's attempt to use alternative wording for the topic (novel reading). It's a form of writing intended to avoid repetition, but can confuse readers when not made evident. The title of the article defines what the writer is intending... and it's about novels. Which is interesting to discuss. Of course, we can definitely note that men are still interested in interactive fiction... but that doesn't equate to enjoyment of novels. And is a whole other consideration. In fact, it supports my point that it is less a matter of time and more a matter of interest. And lore books do not equate to narrative storytelling for me. I set a hard boundary between reading encyclopedic information and lore... and stories. Hence why I sometimes done even consider The Silmarillion to be an actual narrative. :)

    • @chiekokurokumo
      @chiekokurokumo Месяц назад

      So do men enjoy lore and making stories? Sure. No one should argue against that. But do men invest money the same way women do into (predefined) narratives? Apparently not. What has changed since the early 1900s and now for men to drop off? That's the discussion. Perhaps another stream we can tackle the question of why men prefer interactive fiction vs predefined fiction. Might have something to do with the illusion of agency and achievement.

    • @arcanefeline
      @arcanefeline Месяц назад

      @@chiekokurokumo okay, lore books may not apply here. However, most TTRPG books I've read contain a lot of fiction sections, with characters and narrative. They are used to immerse the reader into the game setting and theme. But I'm not arguing about your main point here, just clarifying some stuff. I do agree that it's probably not a time thing, but a preference thing. Although I wonder why there're so many classics of different genres that are not romance if men supposedly have less interest in reading? You've mentioned that this is a "chicken or the egg" kind of question, but it seems to me that the change in the book industry came first, and then the male interest dwindled. Plus the other factors you've mentioned, of course. My guess is that the major shift in publishing happened after the massive success of the Twilight books. Personally, I make time for books by listening to audio books while I'm driving or training at the gym. I'm not American so my perspective is a bit different. In my experience, fantasy novels are mostly a male thing. Especially the classics like Moorcock, Le Guin, Howard and Tolkien. Most women I know either don't read or read YA novels, fanfiction or books about serial killers.

    Nice general overview. Like you said, fantasy is escapism and shouldn't be confused with what people believe or want IRL. It is like the vigilante, we can like and can cheer for it in a movie, but IRL someone trying to act like Batman or the Equalizer is unacceptable. People tend to forget that there is a difference between 'mainstream' and 'niche' genres and that the sudden rise in a sub-genres popularity doesn't always mean it is surpassing or even coming close to doing the same business or having the same impact as the 'mainstream,' but that is typical and 'boring.' But niches are niche for a reason, and when some of these ideas bleed into popular 'mainstream' properties cause they are trendy or the writes likes them and they are surprised when their typical 'mainstream' audience rejects them and/or is puzzled/disgusted by them, this is why!

    On a more serious note, it feels like Fantasy has been completely upended by a subgenre in which Fantasy is mostly incidental, and the main appeal is basically "Pornography for Women." I wonder what the numbers would look like if you controlled for women who are purely into smut -- going back to that quote, men look at pornography while women read pornography. After all, you'd have to control for pornography traffic if you were trying to make a study about "legitimate" internet traffic. An obvious solution would be to treat Romantasy as its own completely independent genre, untethered from Fantasy entirely. But it feels wrong to do that, because I'm sure there are tons of women (my wife included) who simply enjoy a fantasy story with a focus on romance, and the smut is just a take-it-or-leave-it bonus. Those would be the female readers who also enjoy regular old fantasy novels. I wonder what's the proportion of Eclectic Fantasy Fans vs. Smut Horndogs. It would seem the latter vastly outnumber the former.

If a guy was reading a playboy on his commute, even covered up, you'd say he's got a porn addiction. So much for Equality of the sexes.

    As a lifelong Warcraft fan, I'll try to keep my comments short. Even from a feminine lens, the story is weak, as the relationships are shallow and often have to be stated. There is more than story consistency--the lore itself has become really broken and heavily retconned in a harmful way, taking its first hits around Warlords of Draenor and reaching a nadir in Shadowlands. It's getting better: Dragonflight was a step up from Shadowlands, but still bad, and the War Within is looking to be a step up from DF. Lastly, while I care a lot about the worldbuilding, a lot of the fanbase approaches it more like a football game, more interesting in their favorite "teams" scoring wins than whether the writing is good. You can imagine how some of the new features you've mentioned and the anti-faction war storyline they are driving have made these sub-communities extra incensed. A good portion cares more about customization and getting the options they want, regardless of the lore. So I can't say fixing the writing itself is going to save anything compared to what the larger community of fans want.
