    Brilliant video...I study Shotokan Karate. It is very useful. It will help me with my Karate practice actually. Because I also like Victorian boxing...It possesses so many practical examples of boxing for self defense techniques. It would be benefitial to the Karateka to cross - train with this style of Pugilism.

      @martinarmstrong9312 Thanks for the like and your comment. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Did you see part 1? There are more Victorian boxing videos on the channel that I think you will enjoy. One I had a lot of fun making was JuJitsu pressure points with the Yawara stick to see what works with minimal force. Some really hurt, lol. Then we finished the video with mixing yawara striking techniques with bareknuckle boxing.. If you want, I will put the links up in the comments. Thanks again Dan.

      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 2 месяца назад

      @daniel-lee888 Hi, thanks for the like. Yes, there were a couple of high profile fights between Marquis of Queensbury rules boxers and Savate fighters. One was in Paris between Savate Legend Joseph Charlemont and an English middle weight Joe Driscol. The fight a complete farce and was a badly managed fix. Charlemont had his Dad as one of the Judges lol and won by a kick to the balls. This was in 1899. I will be doing a video about this as part of the Bartitsu Story. A second fight in 1900 was Between the top savateur of France and the 1899 and current Boxing Heavyweight World Champion, Jim Jefferies. He knocked the Frencman out cold in the first or second round. This. Will also be a feature in a video series comming soon all about the Great Victorian era Heavyweight Boxing Champions.

    • @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan
      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 3 месяца назад

      @danielteixeira309 That's a good question. Though some are still used to some degree and would still be effective, even bareknuckle boxing has evolved over time, incorporating modern boxing parries and blocking techniques. Also, influences from other fighting styles. This video is realy just looking at bareknuckle under London Prize Ring Rules where you could use trips, pulling as well as holding and hitting and throws. I hope this goes someway to answer your question. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video and channel.

    liked your approach. Martial arts isn't magical.. it's training simple and effective instincts and reactions again and again. People say 'but an MMA fighter would kick your ass'. Yes; in a ring, with a warm up and cos they train 6 hours a day as a job. Self-defence is a surprise attack, with unknown attackers, in an uncontrolled situation. We just need reactions that help us respond in confusing situations.

    If I recall correctly, Baritsu is a non-existent martial art practiced by Sherlock Holmes. The problem with this video is that none of us walks around with a walking stick or a cane on our person.

    • @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan
      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 4 месяца назад

      Wrong, it was a very real civilian self-defense system created by Edward William Barton-Wright it comprised of Jujitsu, catch and schwingen wrestling, boxing , savate and la canne it has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. Although it lasted only 4 years, 1898 to 1902 it changed the landscape of Self defence for ever. Your point about walking canes is true, the whole point of the video is re creating the system in its original format. Thats why i keep refering to the line Self Defence for the Victorian Gent. Though, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

      It is CQC for the Victorian era, but the boxing, kicking and definitely Ju Jitsu is still very relevant today, also Sherlock Holmes only used in the books pugilistic blows and throws, it does wind me up when it’s called by some The Sherlock Holmes MA, it wasn’t, cheers.

    Nice analysis. There are indeed many similarities between karate and 19th century boxing (I say this as having practiced karate since 1970). Just to quibble, I have not seen any karate people performing a back fist as you do in the first example, a raking strike as in boxing's chopper. However, the way some karate people perform the backfist in some of their kata, a chopping like rake could be a possible interpretation. So perhaps there's nothing necessarily wrong about how you've interpreted it. It would be done off the lead hand, however.

    • @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan
      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 5 месяцев назад

      @haffoc Glad you enjoyed the video, like I said, I'm not a karate expert, so I will acknowledge your greater karate experience. For the back fist, I came across it in a karate video and was equaly surprised that it was simular to the downward raking backfist of bareknuckle boxing. I have a limited experience of karate and just assumed it was from a different style than Shotokan. Thanks for the feed back constructive, educated criticism is always welcome. Hope you enjoy the channel.

    • @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan
      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 5 месяцев назад

      @Ablet84 That's why I put it up as I had to re hab my shoulder injury. As progressions go, at the wall your aim is to get to 3 sets of 50. Start with one set and work up to two then 3. Each rep should take 5 seconds. Once you can do 3 sets of 50. Then go to bar or work surface at hip height. Work towards 3 sets of 40.

    Sorry, but if I've learned one thing from Kendo it's that cocking back the arm and striking should be performed in one, quick fluent motion. If you take as long as you do on cocking back your arm you're signalling the strike way ahead and invite stabs to your elbow and face, assuming your opponent has a knife. I recommend you do more sparring with real opponents, like fencing or kendo, and this problem will become apparent to you very quickly. Regardless, I am sure that when you do land a hit your strikes would be absolutely devastating, so in that sense this is a good demonstration.

      @LosHermanosGrimm erm, yes and no. I can see where you are comming from with this, although there are alot of similarities, there are some very major differences that drive them apart. Hmm, I can feel a video can be made of this very subject.

      @@DanOldSkoolConditioningMan I know bro. I'm oversimplifying. The phrase could be an initial statement, then elaborate and state the "buts" and "howevers".

      @LosHermanosGrimm That is a lot to put in the comments section. I know you were oversimplifying, and I didn't want to ignore your comment as I found your comment an interesting take on the subject. Also, to give you the best explanation, as well as others, that have also commented about wing chun and victorian boxing. I will do a video about it as it would be an interesting one to do. I wasn't trying to be flippant. I will try and give you some answers. Ok, striking is pretty much the same, but in wing chun, a lot of elbows are used. In victorian boxing, this would be replaced by using the fore arm as a clubbing strike. Instead of kicking, you would get a lot of hard ankle sweeps. Replace wing chun trapping with western standing wrestling arm pins. Hip and body throws and head locks and neck cranks all done in the clinch. As although wrestling was banned under London Prize Ring Rules. The above would all be legal. But realy, where they start to pull away from each other is when you start to use leaning or bent, crouching fighting stances, allowing the victorian pugilist to fight easily away from his centre line. Also, unless highly trained, the punching power of victorian boxing is far more powerful than center line punching of wing chun. Also, boxing has no weapon forms. However, if you are using victorian boxing as part of Bartitsu, then you have a whole myriad of them. There are more similarities and differences, but I hope these few give you some food for thought. I did not mean to cause any offence. I always try and respond to comments as they are always greatfuly recieved.

      @vyderka the video of wrestling holds, throws, trips, arm pins, and neck cranks allowed under London Prize Ring Rules. 1838 to 1892 will be getting filmed over the next few weeks. You might also find interesting the video I did with pat on Jujitsu pressure points using the Yawara stick. Check it out. All the best. Dan.

      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan I've seen it, I'm quite a fan of palm sticks in general, but mostly as strike enhancers, and I find them surprisingly useful in wrestling/clinch as they help to grab and pull the limbs or neck. Anyways I'm not a fan of using pressure points at all, yawara or no yawara ;)

    • @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan
      @DanOldSkoolConditioningMan 6 месяцев назад

      @vyderka Yeah definitely a strike enhancer for sure. We realy just did the video as a bit of fun to test out with minimum force what works and what doesn't with pressure points. It was a fun video to make as me and Big Pat from the gas works laughed all the way through, even though some were very painful lol.

      @michaelmcbride1204 Yeah, there is so many similarities with Wing Chun. Both use bottom three knuckles and the parries for punches 4 and. 5 are very simular to fook sau. Forgive my spelling of the technique. It's over 30 years I did wing chun. I might do a comparison of the two in the future as I do think it would be interesting to explore.
