    Ugh, as a big, tall guy, I would never be able to squeeze into that claustrophobic space to install the rudder sensor. A good friend got a belt loop snagged when he was in a space like yours and actually thought he was going to die. One last heave and he tore apart the loop. Enjoyed the video.

    For your oil filters get a 2 liter soft drink bottle and cut the upper part off. The bottom will fit neatly over your oil filter. Slip the bottle over the filter after you loosen it a bit. It's guaranteed to catch any drips and spills when you remove the filter.

    The odd boat you saw was a traditional commercial fishing boat for Lake Michigan. Everything is enclosed to keep the weather out. There are sliding doors on the sides they open to work the gear then shut them to keep the water out and the heat in..

    I just found your channel and watched episode 18 then decided to go back and start from the beginning. I just wanted to comment about Aunt Catfish restaurant, where all the waitresses call you cousin.😅 I lived in Daytona for a couple of years and that was my favorite restaurant. Whenever I pass by there on a road trip to Florida, I always stop there. It's my favorite. The salad buffet is incredible with their baked beans and coleslaw and cornbread. Just love that place. I'm loving your videos. People can learn so much from your experiences. Thank you so much for showing it all! You're a brave and humble man.

So let me say God bless you on your journey! I'm new to your channel and noticed that your boat was acting like the trim tabs were down. Could that have contributed to the lack of control after leaving port?

    Nice video but get your geography right. And you’re doing the loop? The Mackinac Bridge connects Michigan’s lower penninsula with Michigan’s upper penninsula. It is five miles in length. And you are following the Michigan coastline, not Wisconsin. Duh!

    Question sir. I'm assuming you don't have a lower helm. If that's the case, is the upper climate controlled? If not, was wondering how operating up top without being in ac or heat impacts your trip, and would you recommend having an upper/lower helm? Continued safe travels!

    • @MV_Checkmate
      @MV_Checkmate 2 дня назад

      Only upper helm. It has been either chilly (jacket weather) then I leave the Isingglass closed till about 10AM or so. On the hot days I open all the isinglass and around 10AM I turn on a fan. I feel that a climate controlled wheelhouse would not let me experience the true atmosphere of my surroundings.

    I'm looking to do the loop solo in a few. If you do the Nashville side trip, stop at the Ashland City Marina. They are a new sponsor, and I have my loop boat there getting ready. Interested in your westside trip down to Chicago.

  • @jrschantz
    @jrschantz 7 дней назад

    It seems that so many Loopers miss so much of the Lake Michigan coastal ports in their "race" to Chicago. Manistee is a great town/marina as is Leland, Frankfort, Ludington, Pentwater, etc., etc. The Wisconsin side has it's share of great ports as well.

    • @MV_Checkmate
      @MV_Checkmate 7 дней назад

      It’s because of the weather window. I do not like bumpy water at all, so I run long distances while the lake is flat. I would love to see every town, but just not enough time.

    • @jrschantz
      @jrschantz 7 дней назад

      @MV_Checkmate I guess. Here I sit in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge with a 3 day forecast of "light and variable" winds and 1' or less seas. I think the docktail scuttlebutt has made you guys gun shy of the lakes that have many great days through September. I've enjoyed your solo voyage. Safe travels and calm seas to you.
