HFA tips & tricks - Adding IR Remote Control to the Grimm MU1 music server
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 года назад
On 4 September 2021, Grimm Audio released a new software update that enables Infrared Remote Control functionality for the MU1 Music Server. However, the unit does not contain an IR receiver, and to date, there is no info on the Grimm site. In this video, I will explain how you can make this work. This is the receiver that I purchased: www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/1-m-infrarood-ir-tv-hdmi-afstandsbedien...
HFA tips & tricks - Spike Coupling for the Courageous
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
In essence, you are always coupling speakers or audio components. There is no such thing as decoupling. What you are doing when coupling a component with a compliant medium such as rubber, is that resonance energy is stored and then released with a delay, while the resonance frequencies are shifted, and this does make for a very noticeable change in sound. Depending on the setup, this can actua...

HFA visits Callas Audio to hear an Aries Cerat system with Wolf von Langa speakers

I went to visit Ron Ploeger of Callas Audio to hear his new Aries Cerat system consisting of the Helene DAC, Incito S preamp, and Genus 813 Single Ended Triode Power Amplifier with the Wolf von Langa Son loudspeakers. As I already feared since I had already reviewed the Sons, it sounded spectacular. Not that you can hear this via the crappy camera mic, but I hope it does set the mood. After thi...

Hifi-Advice Reviews on YouTube - Introduction

My name is Christiaan, owner of and writer for www.hifi-advice.com. In contrast to the extensive articles on that website, this RUclips channel is intended to provide an easy-to-digest alternative with to-the-point and compact video reports. Alas, the audio (using built-in iPad mics) did not turn out great and the video could also be better. But I promise improvement for successive videos!

So, you intend to keep the same speakers?
I don't mind a few more holes in the floor, as I have plenty already:-) But ultimately, I don't recommend doing this. It's more of a though exercise, to indicate that such things have a considerable effect.
It's your house😅
It looks like an excellent turntable. The quality of sound was really very apparent from the clips you played. I have a few Thorens turntables as references and my main testbed is a TD150. The areas that impact sound are chassis stiffness, resonance dampening, main bearing thrust-plate material, plinth stiffness, motor power supply and tonearm choice. Lowering the noise floor and increasing power supply quality make the TD150 super-capable. It seems that this Thorens is a Great Leap Forward! I should find one to audition!
The very first turntable I owned was a tD150! But that was very long ago when I was a teenager, long before I became an audiophile. I certainly did not treat it with the respect it deserved... 🙂 If you're interested, see my TD1601 review on the hifi-advice website in which I compare various classic Thorens turntables to one another, and to the TD1601: www.hifi-advice.com/blog/turntable-and-accessories-reviews/turntable-reviews/thorens-td1601-turntable-part1/.
Brilliant and so easy
So I would have to spend €4,500 So I would have to spend €4,500 on a THORENS MADE IN TAIWAN... NOT EVEN DEAD 🤣😂🤣 AT LEAST IT WAS MADE IN CHINA 🤔😲😱😂
how does this compete with the Aqua linQ Streamer made in Milan Italy❓
It depends on the DAC but I would say the LinQ has a very different attitude. Bolder, more robust, more expressive. Please read my reviews of the Kalla and LinQ on HFA for detailed impressions.
Great review. I am about to buy a unit, will use it (for the time being) with the phone stage of a Audionet SAM SE. Can you give an idea of a good phone stage with balanced inputs? Many thanks Bert
I've tried a couple quite costly phono stages (between 9.000 and 30.000 euros) with true balanced inputs but I was not wowed by the results. Based on my experience thus far, I would recommend not stressing over balanced versus unbalanced. The latter is what I use, even with the costliest turntables and phono preamps, and it can produce fantastic sound.
The Antipodes ❤
A sharp snap-off blade and a metal ruler will also do the trick. And if you do this with all your covers they'll align nicely again. 😜
Oh goody! This’ll do wonders for my Butcher Cover and my Turquoise Zeppelin!
Audio Technica AT33Sa at $1,200 CAD -- ouch!
Have you reviewed any Audio Note gear in your own system? DACs in partiicular.
Alas, I have not.
very bad idea I must say but thanks for sharing.
How much is the tp92 have you tried it your know what it's like on the td160?
The TP92 is about 1200 euros. It could probably fit on the TD160 with the right arm board but I did not try this as the TP92 forms a complete, well-adjusted package with the TD1601.
Yeah it's about 900£ with tax shouldn't need an armboard it's the same length I think the holes the same? Do you know the diameter? I was looking at the uni pivot the tp82 only 500 £ I don't know what that's like is on the lower price model might be a good arm. Why does the original arm need high compliance cartridge? I would have thought its the other way around is the weight of the arm light than?@@hifi-advicehigh-endaudioeq3675

Do you guys really think 1/16 inch is really going to ruin the entire sleeve? I wouldn't do this on rare albums or more valuable ones but the run of the mill commons should be fine..... I like this idea as long as the absolute minimum is shaved off
What do you have under the units for isolation?
These are Artesania beechwood discs on carbon fiber linear arms. They are specific to these Artesania racks. It's not so much isolation as it is coupling, although the system does aim to dissipate vibrations.
It looks very very nice, but when I think further about it.. it's sacrilege.. and if I ever sell any lps, then the buyer would ask.. "How do you keep the edge of the sleeve so pristine and untouched?? huh? : ) Me: "uhm.. i regularly guillotine them.. yes.. that's it.!" It does look entertaining though..
I like how you describe the process as using a Guillotine! I may use that word next time I need to borrow the unit from a friend:-) In the end, keeping records original and thinking of resale value is one thing. Ensuring you can comfortably use them and insert records into the sleeve without further damaging an already frayed eged is another. Everyone should decide for themselves what matters most.
@@cpunter Of course, my fellow punter : ) I can understand it, it does look incredibly good and each to their own.👍 I must say, as a buyer, most likely I would some day notice it, because the edge would be looking too perfect for its age. Many probably don't mind it, others will. As you say it can make it possible to insert the lp without fraying further and yes it's more if you care about its resale value, or maybe losing a tiny bit of the artwork. Anyway, I'm wondering if there's any sort of sealant you can add on lp cover edges to prevent them from fraying in the first place?

oh dear ... no just no no no no
It would be great if you could compare the Grimm with Antipodes newer Oladra music server which Ive found to be a very nice step forward above their K50
Is it ANTI-podz or an-TIP-uh-deez?
Not sure, but I am more than likely pronouncing it incorrectly😄
Got it from the horses mouth: Mark Cole confirmed it is an-TIP-oh-deez. Oh, and thanks for the great reviews. 👍

Wow.Wow 😮❤
Usage of tape measure and Vernier caliper for speaker positioning is a dead giveaway that we are dealing with an amateur. Micrometers and gauge blocks are the tools to use. Everybody knows, that if you are positioning your speakers with less than a 0,01 mm precision you are not being serious about hi-fi.
I guess, not many people got the sarcasm then?
Lately installed the same AT33 Sa on my TD125 MKII. I am a Fan of Shibata needles since 25 years. It is even better than the AT33 PTG which I had before. It sounds so tight, open and smooth at the same time I am rediscovering my LP collection currently. However installation and adjusting with the Schön template is a bit tricky because the stylus and the boron cantilever are so minuscule. My TD125 MKII is modified with a widia bearing seat, precision pulley and renovated electronics, at the moment I don`t feel the need for a change. Thank you for your nice review, though.
What is the background jazz please?
It's right-free RUclips stock music. Sorry, don't recall the artist.

Where can I buy one? and how much?
Would it work on my cats toenails?
You know, I bet it would! But good luck keeping those little paws steady! ;-)
How does it compare to the TD 1500 model?
Alas, I have not heard the TD1500.
Hi, After watching your video about MU1 and K50. I am planning to buy a MU1 which is more close to my preference of sound signature. However, I would like to know your thought about the difference between MU1 and taiko extreme. What is extreme’s sound signature? Does it surpass by MU1 a lot? After all, it is twice as expensive as MU1. Thanks for your help🙏🙏
The Taiko Extreme is arguably closer to the Antipodes K50's "full-blooded" character than the Grimm MU1's cleaner and leaner "as is" presentation, but it really combines the best aspects of them. It sounds organic, full-bodied, and richly saturated, yet refined, high-res, nimble, expressive, and dynamic.
That sounds really tempting! Thanks for your reply
No matter how good it performs it has one of the most ugly tonearms ever!
Very nice preview Christiian. Do you remember having gain management issue with the Incito-S? I'm using the same one than yours (low gain fixed at 8db) but the pairing with some amps is not easy. I remember that you paired it with a CH A1.5 what was your gain setting? Thanks
hi what are the metal things the speaker is on called
In the speaker base are 4 spikes (basically screws with a pointy end) and in this video, I am positioning these directly on the concrete floor.
hi this is very interesting Christian which will you put under your cd player?
I actually undid the floor piercings again (and filled the holes again, not invisibly, alas) as it proved to be too much of a good thing, and am now back to using floor discs with spikes.
You must get rid of the mat and buy a Arcomat from Funk Firm.. In fact I would imagine their upgrades for the LP12 will support the 1601 and incredible is an underestimation of the upgrades..!!
Good tip! Seems like a good option🙂
Hi and thank you for the review. I have a question relating to the setting of the anti skating, how do you do that since there is no numerical value associated with the graduations of the cursor? The documentation speaks of the use of an adjustment record without further clarification. I have the same question concerning the adjustment of the VTA. Regards
This is not the ideal forum for extensive advice (please post a comment on the HFA website for that) but I'll give you the cliff notes. Anti-Skating can be set by ear. If one channel has sibilance (loud peaks, vocals), simply turn the dial such that the distortion moves to the center or disappears. If it goes to the other channel, you went too far. VTA is partly a science and partly a matter of taste. Note that it does tie in with the VTF (as the cantilever bulges more with higher weight). Start out horizontally level and try the arm a little higher and a little lower. Higher (gimbal raised) will yield a leaner balance with treble more pronounced while lower (gimbal lowered) will yield a fuller, thicker, warmer, more relaxed sound. The ideal position is usually in-between, often right on the edge of the sound tilting too much. As mentioned, there's much more to it but these are the basics.
@@cpunter Thank you for your kind response. Sorry, I didn't noticed your web links, I will watch this very carefully. This turntable seems to be a marvelous precision mechanism.
lmao
Yeah well for me it was a no no,that 2 Point gimbal. Rudimentary
B R A V O …! Wonderful video with just enough information, and actual listening 2 put your point across. Well done. Many Thanks from, C.D.@AUSTIN TeXas 3-14-2023
Do you think this cartridge can also fit with the arm of my Thorens Td1500??
I've not heard the TD-1500 but I would definitely expect the AT33SA to work well in a wide range of medium-mass tonearms, including the TP-150 on the TD-1500 turntable.
Instead of doing this hit the frayed edge LIGHTLY with some 220 grid sandpaper. This way you take off only so much as to have it visually repaired while still maintaining the original dimensions.
Don't do this!!! Doing this ruins the collectible value of the record! This record is now very different from how it used to be. Also it's quite unfair to the next buyer. Imagine buying a record that has been cut off and now your records don't align correctly anymore in your collection because some ... genius... decided to cut it off.
While I respect this perspective and each individual should decide for themselves, it should be mentioned that badly frayed edges cannot be fixed with sanding paper. Also, when looking at my own collection, the sleeves already vary wildly in terms of depth even when untouched, and so far I have never felt that the cutting off a slight strip has made this any worse.
How can you repair a slight tear on the opening of the sleeve??
You could glue a piece of paper or thin carton on the inside behind the tear.
I‘ve heard a pair of son speakers.Found them very awful.I don‘t quite know what went wrong, but they had a pretty small soundstage, the voice sang to my knees. The singer seemed be half a metre tall. The Bass was pretty Slow and boomy. The highs were the only good thing about it.Maybe the Elektronics didn‘t match but for a 50k System it was pretty dissapointing…
even through cheapo earphones through RUclips................the sound is effortless and fluid...............amazing !
This is fine if it's worthless.
please…. dont do this wtf 😭😭😭
